The darkness enveloped me, and despite the summer heat outside, the air in the building was cool. I sat in silence, intently focused, anticipating what happened next, but not quite prepared. I tensed up upon seeing the spectral woman directly ahead of me. She silently floated, translucent and seemingly unaware — until at last facing me and lunging with a guttural growl as her face distorted into some horrific entity.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines director Lindsey Anderson Beer has a whole lot of projects in the works at Paramount, from a new version of Sleepy Hollow to a film inspired by the American Girl toy brand – but that isn’t stopping her from teaming up with Universal Content Productions and genre regular James Wan (as well as his wife Ingrid Bisu) to develop a TV series called 1313, which is described as being a darker reimagining of the 1964 classic sitcom The Munsters. If 1313 gets a series order, Anderson Beer will be serving as the showrunner.
According to Deadline, 1313 will be “a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse,” which makes sense, since the Munsters family included vampires, a little werewolf, and a version of Frankenstein’s Monster. As for the title of this new project, it comes from the fact that the Munsters lived in a house with the address 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

As far as individual authors go, Stephen King is certainly in the top of the list of authors whose works have been adapted. He is right there with Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, and other authors whose works have been adapted often and in many forms. But unlike the aforementioned authors, King’s adaptations are usually original, while the other authors have seen their works adapted and remade more than once. In light of that fact, we can confirm that King’s story, “The Monkey,” had been adapted into a film this spring and the movie was presented to buyers at Cannes this year!
Knowing how popular King’s adaptations are, it was a sure thing that someone would buy the movie, and as it happens, Neon managed to nab the distribution rights for the upcoming movie and they have confirmed that a 2025 release date is currently planned.

What scares Stephen King? The legendary horror author has made a career (and a fortune) frightening us all with his tales of terror. But what gets under King's skin? What gives him the creeps? "Pet Sematary" was famously sold as the "Stephen King novel that scared Stephen King," mostly because King thought the book was too damn bleak but published it to fulfill a contractual obligation.
But what about horror works by other people? Are there horror movies that give the master of horror the heebie jeebies? As it turns out, there's one movie in particular King has claimed scared him. In fact, it scared him so much that the first time he watched it he requested it be turned off before the film even ended. That film: "The Blair Witch Project," the blockbuster indie horror movie that became a cultural phenomenon when it arrived in 1999.

Exclusive: Jackson White (Tell Me Lies) has been tapped to star opposite Lily James in the upcoming film inspired by the story of Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, from 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment.
While it’s not entirely clear who White will be playing, we’re told he’s set for the part of Herd’s love interest. The untitled feature goes into production this year.
Famously launching the online dating platform Bumble after co-founding and departing Tinder, Herd became one of the youngest self-made billionaires at age 31, when Bumble went public in 2021. While she stepped down as CEO last year, the app continues to be hugely popular amongst the single crowd.
Plot details for the film remain vague, as it’s said to be somewhat loosely inspired by Herd’s story. Rachel Lee Goldenberg will direct from her script written with Bill Parker and Kim Caramele, with...

Writer/director Lindsey Anderson Beer’s Pet Sematary prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines didn’t go over well with a lot of genre fans – including myself – but it was a big success for the Paramount+ streaming service. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, “The movie debuted as the No. 1 title on Paramount+ and quickly broke the streamer’s record for the most-watched Paramount+ original movie within the first 30 days of a film’s release in the U.S.” So it’s no surprise that Paramount has renewed their first-look deal with Anderson Beer and her production banner Lab Brew, allowing the filmmaker to continue developing a slate of projects for the studio. This slate includes the new version of Sleepy Hollow that Beer was said to be working on back in 2022.

American author Stephen King is much loved by his fans for crafting some of the most iconic horror stories. The author has written many cult classics like It, The Shining, Pet Sematary, The Outsider, and more.
His books have also inspired multiple TV and film productions, with the 1980s The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, being the most popular. Hence, it’s no surprise that the 76-year-old writer is considered an authority in the horror genre.
Most recently, King shared his take on a 2024 horror film which received an abysmal Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 21%. The author disagreed with critics’ opinions about the film.

Stephen King is at his best when he's writing about his fears as a father. With "The Shining," he took his alcoholism and made the lead Jack Torrance into a worst-case scenario, someone who destroys his family (and potential writing career) because he lets his addiction consume him.
Then there's "Pet Sematary," which is all about the primal fear any parent has of their child dying. The Creed family moves to rural Maine, in a house right next to a lethal road frequented by trailer trucks. After the family cat Church becomes roadkill, Dr. Louis Creed and neighbor Jud Crandall bury the cat in an ancient Mi'kmaq burial ground. Church returns, alive but worse for wear. When Louis' toddler son Gage is killed by another oncoming truck, he can't resist the temptation to bring his son back. If there's anything that could inspire a normal person to play Dr. Frankenstein,...

We Don’t Trust You, the new album from Future and Metro Boomin, is here (the first half anyway), and listeners are abuzz about the 17-song project. Coming in at approximately one hour, the project has elicited plenty of talking points in less than 24 hours. Kendrick Lamar pulled another “Control”-like move and got the rap world talking about his shots at Drake and J. Cole on “Like That” — which coincidentally overshadowed yesterday’s “Whole Time” freestyle from Big Sean, who originally put Kendrick on “Control.”

Kendrick Lamar has heard Drake and J. Cole’s most recent subliminal disses, and he’s done playing games. In his guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s new song “Like That,” the rapper comes after his friends turned foes.
After opening his verse by calling out “n****s talkin’ out of they necks,” Kendrick name-drops Drake and Cole’s 2023 hit “First Person Shooter” off the former’s album, For All the Dogs: “Fuck sneak dissin’, ‘First Person Shooter,’ I hope they came with three switches.”
This line is a direct response to Cole boasting on “First Person Shooter” about being the “hardest Mc” out of the so-called Big Three rappers of their generation. “Is it K-Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me?” he raps. “We the Big Three like we started a league, but right now, I feel like Muhammad Ali.”

If there’s one thing you can count on in a Ryuhei Kitamura horror film, it’s the copious amounts of bloodshed and gore. With Kitamura, gore is most definitely an artform. Based on Clive Barker’s 1984 short story of the same name, 2008 film The Midnight Meat Train follows a photographer obsessed with dark subject matter. He gets in over his head when he discovers a serial killer that butchers unsuspecting night commuters in grisly fashion.
There’s probably not many movies as aptly titled as this one. There’s a lot of human meat, blood, brain matter, and limbs being carved up on the late-night subway train in this horror movie. Bradley Cooper stars as Leon Kaufman, the photographer that stumbles upon and then becomes obsessed with the ruthless serial killer. His concerned girlfriend Maya, a character not in the original story, is played by Leslie Bibb. But the...

Stephen King's books are frequently adapted into successful movies, but Hollywood often expands on the worlds King has created with original sequels that are bizarre or poorly written. One of the worst examples are the "Children of the Corn" movies, which mushroomed from an adaptation of King's single short story into a hackneyed 11-film saga. Likewise, films such as "Return to Salem's Lot" and "Pet Sematary" use Stephen King's name and established concepts to lure audiences in, but they pale in comparison to his prolific originals.
One of the exceptions to the rule is "The Rage: Carrie 2." Initially called "The Curse," Rafael Moreu's screenplay had nothing to do with Stephen King's masterful debut, but then shoehorned elements of Carrie White lore into the storyline (via Fangoria). The protagonist, Rachel Lang, is Carrie's secret half-sister and shares her telekinetic abilities. However, she is not as much of a social pariah as Carrie White,...

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Amazon has vehemently denied using artificial intelligence to finish its upcoming remake of “Road House,” despite a new lawsuit alleging the studio did just that to race the film out before the studio’s copyright on the original IP lapsed. But whether or not the studio did employ AI for the project, it won’t matter to a jury when it comes to determining if Amazon screwed the original “Road House” screenwriter out of some royalty money.
The lawsuit, filed by screenwriter R. When "Pet Sematary" was published in 1983, it came with a killer marketing hook: it was billed as the book that was so scary it even frightened its author, Stephen King. Whether or not that was true was immaterial; it was too good to ignore — Stephen King, the master of horror, had penned something that scared even him! To hear King tell it, which he has numerous times over the years, he found the book so disturbing — particularly its ultra-dark subject matter — that he stuffed it in a drawer, only to later pull it out to fill a contractual obligation. I'm a big Stephen King fan, and "Pet Sematary" is my favorite King novel. My first encounter with the material wasn't the book, though — it was Mary Lambert's 1989 film adaptation.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, it all comes to an end as Rachel Reeves searches for scares in the suburbs.
In the back half of the 1980s, the American suburbs experienced a resurgence in popularity. As global instabilities stabilized and economies began to boom, moving to the suburbs became a sign of financial and professional success. Primarily populated by young families, the suburbs also became associated with traditional family values, safety, and community. However, as any true crime enthusiast knows, some things (and some people) are not always as innocent as they appear.
With Hollywood quick to hop on this trend train, what resulted was a wealth of interesting Frankenstein-style film ideas that simultaneously displayed the absurd excess and nostalgic conservatism the...

16 years after the faux trailer debuted as part of Grindhouse, Eli Roth finally delivered the feature version of Thanksgiving. There were no leftovers, but among the special features on the slasher’s home video release is an audio commentary by Roth and producer-writer Jeff Rendell.
Here are 10 things I learned from the Thanksgiving commentary…
1. The concept dates back to the filmmakers’ childhoods.
Thanksgiving is based on Roth’s faux trailer from Grindhouse, but its origins date back even further than 2007. Best friends since kindergarten, Roth and Rendell grew up in Newton, Massachusetts (about an hour from Plymouth) watching horror movies together.
Inspired by a pivotal theatrical viewing of Silent Night, Deadly Night circa 1984, they longed for a definitive Thanksgiving slasher in the vein of the other holiday horrors.
“We just started thinking of like, ‘What if there was a Thanksgiving slasher movie? You could put someone in an oven, and there was a killer pilgrim,...

After making the little-seen 2009 thriller Absence, the filmmaking duo of Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer went on to make the impressive 2014 horror film Starry Eyes, which led to them getting the chance to direct the 2019 remake of Pet Sematary. That movie didn’t become as popular as the original film, but it did earn over $100 million at the box office. Five years later, Kölsch and Widmyer have finally set up their next feature: the survival thriller The Swallow, which is set to star Grace Van Dien, who had a memorable role in season 4 of Stranger Things.
Kölsch and Widmyer wrote the screenplay for The Swallow, which was previously featured on the Bloodlist, a list assembled through a survey of industry professionals, who recommend their favorite unproduced thriller and horror scripts. Kevin Kölsch & Dennis Widmyer, the duo behind Starry Eyes and the Pet Sematary remake, are back with the brand new survival horror film The Swallow, Deadline reports.
The cast for the film is led by Grace Van Dien (“Stranger Things”).
“Van Dien stars as Ziggy, who, along with her four friends, journeys out on a camping trip to a picturesque remote forest. But trespassing into an off-limits area, they awaken an uncanny terror in the woods… and a ravenous hunger from within the Earth. Soon, the ground itself is trying to swallow anything and anyone it comes into contact with and Ziggy and her friends have nowhere to run as every trembling step they take could be their last.”

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Prophecy II was Written by Mike Holtz, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
In 1995, Gregory Widen, writer of Backdraft and Highlander set out to tell a story about the darker side of angels with The Prophecy, formerly known as Daemons and God’s Army. The story involved an archangel named Gabriel, played by the absolute legend that is Christopher Walken, who had become jealous of God’s love for human beings. Or as he referred to us… monkeys. In all of Stephen King’s massive catalog, few works are as bleak as his 2010 novella collection Full Dark, No Stars. Rather than supernatural entities, these four dark tales feature human monsters and deal with the horrors that live inside the human heart. Two novellas serve as mirror images of each other, exploring the female response to predatory men. “Big Driver” follows cozy mystery writer Tess Thorne on a mission of revenge against the stranger who raped her and left her for dead. “A Good Marriage” centers Darcy Anderson, a happily married woman faced with a horrifying choice when she discovers her husband’s secret life.
Both novellas were faithfully adapted into feature films in the year 2014 – for better or worse. Premiering on Lifetime, Big Driver tackles King’s rape-revenge story with Maria Bello staring as the vigilante writer and Olympia Dukakis as her literary detective. Ann Dowd and Joan Jett...

Pet Sematary has been sequelized, rebooted, and now with the arrival of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines it has a prequel. Adapting Stephen King’s works for the screen is a risky enough proposition, creating new stories based on them even more so as anyone whose seen a few Children of the Corn sequels or reboots can attest. King himself however seems to be happy with this film and tweeted:
“In the book, this is the story Jud Crandall tells Louis Creed to try and dissuade him from using the Pet Sematary,” wrote King. “The screenplay takes a few liberties, but it’s a fine story. David Duchovny is excellent. The secret, as always, is caring about the characters.”

Every new year that comes brings us a crop of horror movies that blow us away. They (hopefully) break the mould and provide us with scares that we haven’t felt in years. Then there are the other types. Given that the sentiment on Twitter seems to be that Worst of Lists aren’t always necessary, we’ve decided to limit this list to movies we feel fail on almost every conceivable level (which is why you won’t see Exorcist Believer on this list). And since we don’t like to be Entirely negative, we’ll be sure to throw in a silver lining for each film: a little bit of good amongst the bad. So grab your beverage of choice, and let’s throw some films under the bus as we get into the Worst Horror Movies of 2023.

By the early 1990s, it was still fairly rare to see a Hollywood production invade New England to shoot a film. Things had certainly been made here: Ever heard of Jaws? It was shot entirely on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. And I made a documentary about another one: Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, which was shot entirely in Maine in 1988. In fact, much of my documentary film work has focused on stories native to New England. But, still, we didn’t see the kind of movie activity and buzz that we see nowadays. Despite its natural beauty of mountains, rocky coastlines, and beautiful beaches, New England can be difficult (and expensive) to navigate for a film crew. What’s more, during certain months of the year our weather can be unpredictable and harsh. We’re known for our Nor’easters and blizzards and even the occasional hurricane in the autumn months.

Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty” parodied not one but two classic Stephen King stories in this past Sunday night’s new episode, which was titled “Rickfending Your Mort.”
In the episode, Rick hires an Observer to verify Morty’s homemade punch cards, but the cosmic all-seeing entity won’t stop playing clips from their lives out of spite.
The episode features clips from wild “Rick and Morty” adventures we’ve never actually seen before, one of which is titled “Maximum Overdrive With Clothes.”
The segment parodies the 1986 horror movie directed by Stephen King, only in this particular universe, it’s clothes that gain sentience and go on the attack.
In the very same episode, Rick and Morty find themselves in Stephen King’s infamous Pet Sematary, where they humorously test the science of the sour ground.

Try as we might, we withered gothic souls can only hold the line and extend October's scary vibes into November for so long. But with so few viewing options specific to the month (although horror fans now have a bountiful feast to indulge in around Turkey Day thanks to Eli Roth's satisfyingly sleazy slasher "Thanksgiving"), many people tend to spend this time of year diving head-first into Christmas entertainment. The streaming services of the world have sat up and taken notice, too, as evidenced by the endless ads for "Dashing Through the Snow" on Disney+ that popped up on my Roku menu over the past week.
However, it's another quirky Yuletide comedy that's making waves on streaming at the moment. Titled "Best. Christmas. Ever!", the Netflix exclusive rolled out globally on November 16, 2023. Writer/director Lindsey Anderson Beer’s Pet Sematary prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines was made specifically for the Paramount+ streaming service, but now it has been announced that Paramount is going to be doing something I wish streaming services would do much more often: while continuing to stream the movie, they will also be giving it a digital, 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release! The prequel film “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” was a hit for Paramount+, as the streamer leveraged the success of its Peak Screaming horror collection in October to debut the original film to record-breaking viewership.
“Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” is the most-watched Paramount+ original film in its first 30 days of release, breaking the record previously set by “Teen Wolf: The Movie” when that fim-to-tv-to-film sequel was released in January. In fact, Paramount said “Pet Sematary” broke this record early – it surpassed “Teen Wolf” viewership in just a little over three weeks of release.
Cowritten and directed by Lindsey Anderson Beer, “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” is a prequel to the 2019 adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic horror novel and takes place in 1969, following a young Jud Crandall (Jackson White) as he discovers a supernatural force in a nearby cemetery.

In an interview with Film Comment in 2020, actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz said that she used her ample salary from making the remake of "Pet Sematary" to make her feature directorial debut "She Dies Tomorrow," a dark fable about the nature of despair. "She Dies Tomorrow" was one of the unlucky 2020 features whose potential success was hindered by Covid-19-related theater closures, resulting in a combined box office take of less than $400,000 from a release on only 24 screens.
Not that a film like "She Dies Tomorrow" was a threat to, say, a Marvel film. Seimetz constructed an assertively sad meditation full of weeping, doubt, death, and fear. It imagines a world where depression is contagious and how humans' natural propensity toward utter emotional emptiness ultimately informs and colors every aspect of our lives.
The premise seems simple: Kate Lyn Sheil plays a woman named Amy who has just purchased a...

Spooky season is in full swing, which means plenty of movie fans will flock to Tim Burton’s beloved seasonal classic “Sleepy Hollow.” But not the director of the new upcoming movie adaptation — filmmaker Lindsey Anderson Beer is intentionally steering clear of the Halloween classic.
Beer’s “Pet Sematary” prequel just landed on Paramount+ and next up, she’s set to re-team with Paramount to write, direct and produce a new retelling of the beloved American ghost story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
“Whenever I’m adapting something, if it’s been adapted before on film, I don’t rewatch the movies. I you just can’t,” Beer told TheWrap. “I didn’t while making ‘Pet Sematary,’ I just kept re-reading the books. And it’s the same thing for ‘Sleepy Hollow.’”
Of course, the story of the headless horseman that haunts and taunts a small village has been famously...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Pet Sematary (2019) and Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (2023).
In the Master of Horror’s vast collection, few stories cast a shadow so dark as Pet Sematary. Stephen King’s 1983 novel follows Louis Creed and his young family as they fall victim to the grim shadow of death lurking in the woods behind their new house. When the family’s cat Church dies, their friendly neighbor Jud Crandall leads Louis past the charming Pet Sematary deeper into the forest to a burial ground where the dead don’t rest easy. As darkness creeps closer, Louis’s young son Gage becomes the busy road’s next victim and the grieving father attempts to harness whatever power lies beyond the Pet Sematary to reverse the terrible tragedy threatening to destroy his life.
