The Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced but who will win and who should win? In a banner year for great movies, 2013 gave us thought-provoking and entertaining experience at the cinema. On Oscar night, Steve McQueen.s .12 Years a Slave. will take home the top prize but Alfonso Cuaron.s .Gravity. will win all the technical awards including Best Director. Quite fitting since one provoked (.12 Years.) and the other entertained (.Gravity.).

With the film portion of SXSW festival half-over, they’ve announced their top jury winners. Taking home highest honors in narrative competition was Gimme the Loot, a film that used Kickstarter to help raise funds. The synopsis is as reads: “As Malcolm and Sofia’s latest graffiti masterpiece is buffed by a rival gang, these two determined Bronx teens must hustle, steal, and scheme to get spectacular revenge and become the biggest writers in the City.” It sounds like an interesting concept and will be looking forward to a chance to check it out after its big win.
On the documentary side, Jay Bulger‘s Beware of Mr. Baker took home top honors. The documentary explores the life of Ginger Baker, drummer for Cream and Blind Faith, who now lives in South Africa. Also featuring Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Carlos Santana and more. Check out the trailer and more info...

The last time 28Dla had heard from Nightbeasts the film had won "Best in Genre (Horror)" at the Midnight Black Festival of Darkness. The good news continues as Wes Sullivan has recently announced that his film has received foreign distribution through Wonderphil Productions. Those lucky enough to live in Europe and other territories will be able to view the film in a limited theatrical run followed by multiple secondary releases on home video, video-on-demand and television. Wes Sullivan's first feature in the director's chair, Nightbeasts, has been making waves with several appearances at film festivals. Sullivan has also picked up several awards on his festival tour and his latest win is at the Midnight Black Festival of Darkness in Los Angeles. Here, Nightbeasts won Best in Genre (Supernatural) for its creature feature involving a father and son camping trip that goes very wrong. On their journey they come across an ancient Native American legend that is over seven feet, hairy and full of scares. The showing of this film at this latest festival will be held up until November 5th.
As well, Nightbeasts is available to horror fans through a streaming platform at the Midnight Black Festival of Darkness website. The streaming video is priced at under $2 and if you cannot make the festival, then you can watch it there, instantly. For those unfamiliar with the film,...

Lynn Redgrave, who shot to international fame for her performance as a free-spirited bird in 1966's "Georgy Girl," died Sunday at her home in Connecticut after a battle with breast cancer. She was 67.
Redgrave's turn as a chubby, childlike Londoner pursued by her father's middle-aged boss (James Mason) won her an Oscar nomination for best actress and the New York Film Critics Circle Award. She garnered another Academy Award nomination for supporting actress in "Gods and Monsters" (1998), playing a testy housekeeper.
Redgrave hailed from a venerable theatrical family. She was the younger sister of actress Vanessa Redgrave and actor Corin Redgrave and the daughter of Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson.
Her death comes a year after her niece Natasha Richardson died from head injuries sustained in a skiing accident and just a month after the death of Corin. Redgrave was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2002, had a mastectomy in January 2003 and underwent chemotherapy.

He’s one of the few rappers she hasn’t worked with… yet!
Though Ashanti, 29, claimed she had no Grammy predictions when we caught up with her at Ok! magazine’s 3rd Annual Midnight Grammy Brunch on Jan. 30, she did mention one artist she loves: actor-turned-rapper Drake! “I think Drake has been doing an amazing job,” she told HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “I’m a big fan.” She even said it would be “kind of cool” to collaborate with the former Degrassi: The Next Generation star. We smell a hit!
Ashanti (pictured above with Natalie Cole) also dished to us about her career plans for 2010. Not only is her new album coming out this year, which includes a song with Dr. Dre, but she also signed a production deal with Revelry Productions to executive produce her own TV show! “That’s all I can say for now,” she told us, “but I’m really excited.

The Sundance selection committee headed by 1st term Festival Director John Cooper are probably butting heads, making and breaking dreams as I publish this. Official selections are less than 2 weeks away, so I figure, as I do every year, that I'll have some fun predicting what'll be watching/covering 2 months from now. If the tradition of nurturing the new generation of filmmakers and bringing back old family members from previous editions continues, most of my predictions (at least half of the 45 I'll name) should materialize. - The Sundance selection committee headed by 1st term Festival Director John Cooper are probably butting heads, making and breaking dreams as I publish this.
