The biographical documentary is a genre that lends itself to a reliable storytelling formula. First, we look back on the origins of the subject; we are introduced to some of the key figures that helped them along the way; we are shown the beginning of their career all the way to the end, and are then left to contemplate their legacy.
Due to the predictability of this format, these documentaries can often come off as by-the-numbers, taking us on a telegraphed emotional journey intended as a crowdpleaser. But every once in a while, there’s a subject who is so unique that their story elevates the formula. Allee Willis is one such subject, with a life story that’s energetic, colorful and invigorating to witness. Director Alexis Manya Spraic crafts a documentary that strives to be just as fascinating as its subject.

Noted Hollywood publicist Mickey Cottrell passed away on January 1, 2024, at the age of 79. He was known throughout the 1990s for his advocacy of independent film, his knowledge of queer history, and his wild blowout parties. He promoted films like Jonatha Couette's "Tarnation," Wim Wenders' "Wings of Desire," and Philip Noyce's "Dead Calm," as well as "Weekend," "Querelle," and "Earth Girls Are Easy."
Cottrell was so well-liked in the industry, and such an outsize character, that he would occasionally appear in films. In fact, he has several dozen acting credits to his name, many of them in indie queer films. He played a corpse in John Cameron Mitchell's "Shortbus," a barfly in "The Fluffer," and a mincing French aristocrat in league with demons in "Hellraiser: Bloodline." He was also the one who got to say "Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!" in Tim Burton's "Ed Wood." His first acting...

Aliens are never far from the pop culture hive mind. It makes sense that audiences would turn to the skies in the 21st century: a time of existential ennui that’s left many screaming for escape and wondering “What else?” But where the enduring nostalgia of “E.T.” or the effortless charm of “Earth Girls Are Easy” might have made emotional contact in the past, a burning need to really feel something has festered.
The scariest alien movies terrify in many of the same ways the scariest earth-bound horror movies do: building (and sometimes killing) likable characters; producing otherworldly visual displays with seriously grim implications; getting the jump scares, if applicable, timed just right; and daring to put the unimaginably terrible on screen. Alien flicks further distinguish themselves through the subgenre’s unparalleled ability to explore the unknown, conjuring up heinous fates for humans so sweepingly sadistic few other films can attempt them.

Artist Jim Shaw’s studio is a dream factory. It’s where images and ideas combine in unnatural and often surreal ways, conjuring visual puns like the smiling visage of Esther Williams superimposed with an image of her lover, actor Jeff Chandler, wearing a gown. A matching piece shows Chandler with a hermaphroditic image of Williams in the pose of Botticelli’s Venus de Milo. Both pieces were inspired by rumors that Williams ended their affair upon learning Chandler was a transvestite.
“I just kind of ended up working with elements of Hollywood,” Shaw says of his new show, Jim Shaw: Thinking the Unthinkable, at Gagosian Beverly Hills from Jan. 12 through Feb. 25. “I’ve been interested in sort of the history, along with politics, of LSD and psychedelics. I came across that Esther Williams had taken LSD, and that led me to reading her autobiography. When she finally took LSD,...

The tagline on the poster for Mel Brooks' celebrated 1974 comedy film "Blazing Saddles" was, "Never give a saga an even break." Not only is that a clever pun, but it reveals the central philosophy of modern pop satire. Anything that takes itself seriously enough the deem itself a "saga" is most assuredly ripe for ribald parody. Brooks would continue to deny even breaks to Alfred Hitchcock ("High Anxiety"), historical epics ("History of the World Part I"), and "Star Wars" ("Spaceballs"). In 1993, Brooks -- reacting to the massive, massive popularity of Kevin Reynolds' 1991 actioner "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" -- elected to make "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," a raunchy, slapstick farce that skewered all things Sherwood.
Many of Brooks' gags in "Men in Tights" were shamelessly recycled from his unsuccessful 1975 sitcom "When Things Were Rotten," starring Dick Gautier as Robin Hood, but he at least did have the good sense to very occasionally skew modern.

With the popularity of nostalgia-driven shows like "Stranger Things," interest in '80s pop culture always seems to be taking new and exciting directions. One such example is the fascination with the classic movies of the decade. Sure, everyone knows about the heavy hitters like "Back to the Future," " E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," "The Terminator," and "The Breakfast Club." Yet, there are many other films from the 1980s that need respect, and that's what this list is about.
Here, we'll look at the movies of the '80s that deserve some love and devotion. These movies should become references in TV shows, have cosplays made of them, or at least be included in your next '80s movie marathon. So make sure to grab your favorite scrunchie, a bowl of popcorn, and a can of Tab (or whatever soda you can safely drink), so we can totally explore some fantastic...

Tom Shadyac's 1994 hit film "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" starring Jim Carrey has, in 2022, been the subject of a deep re-litigation. Upon its release, audiences reacted with the utmost enthusiasm to Carrey's over-the-top-and-then-some shenanigans, laughing heartily at the actor's boundless energy and aggressive strangeness. Even the premise was odd: Ace Ventura was a private investigator who only took cases involving pets and animals. His plum gig comes when the Miami Dolphins hire him to find their kidnapped mascot, a dolphin named Snowflake.
What made the film worthy of reconsideration was a staggeringly transphobic twist that mocked and derided one of the film's main characters for comedic purposes. The climax of "Ace Ventura" saw a trans woman (Sean Young) stripped down to her underwear in front of dozens of cops as evidence of her guilt in the case. Her exposure was accompanied by having the surrounding crowd spitting and rubbing their...

For kids who grew up in the '90s, there was no bigger star in the world than Jim Carrey. Bursting onto our radar as the larger-than-life pet detective Ace Ventura in 1994, Carrey launched full pelt into a string of movies that not only pushed his early career into overdrive but forever cemented his status as a bona fide comedy megastar.
Just a few years after he first landed on the big screen, Carrey was already making headlines for becoming the highest-paid movie star in the world, earning a whopping 20 million salary for his role in Ben Stiller's troubled black comedy "The Cable Guy." Over the next three decades, the Ontario-born comic has churned out a range of hilarious — and often unexpected — hits that his die-had fanbase has devoured with glee. A version of this story about the designers behind “Angelyne,” “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and “Pam & Tommy” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
A nostalgic look in the rearview mirror is nothing new for television creators. But it is unusual when so many mine the same era, in this case reframing controversial personalities and events from the recent past. The frenetic landscape of the 1980s smashing directly into the 1990s was omnipresent in three different limited series: Peacock’s “Angelyne,” FX’s “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy”. They not only provided viewers with a satisfying reintroduction to the excesses of those decades, but also gave their leading female characters a dissecting reevaluation. And the designers on all three projects were vital to the series’ success.

If you live in Los Angeles, it’s a rite of passage to see the bright pink convertible driven by Angelyne. A B-movie actress of few credits (“Earth Girls Are Easy”) and largely regarded as famous for being famous, her ubiquitous billboards became shorthand for ’80s Los Angeles. In 2017, The Hollywood Reporter published an expose that claimed to reveal her life, although Angelyne disputed the story.
With so much still unknown about Angelyne and anyone outside LA understandably hard-pressed to know who she is, star Emmy Rossum and creator Nancy Oliver have their work cut out for them. “Angelyne” is a hot pink, rapid-fire series focused on the nature of identity and the way our memory informs who we are. With a fun, unique structure, and producer-star Rossum slathering herself in prosthetics and body-hugging costumes, “Angelyne” becomes a highly entertaining and heartfelt look at a Los Angeles icon.

There are many paths to stardom, but the blueprint used by Los Angeles pop icon Angelyne was especially ahead of its time. While attempting to jump-start her music career in the 1980s, she appeared on a series of billboards and soon rose to fame as “L.A.’s Billboard Queen.” Before long, she was scoring television gigs and cameo roles in films like 1988’s “Earth Girls are Easy.” In a post-Kardashians world, celebrity for its own sake has become a perfectly normal pursuit.

Jurassic World: Dominion star Jeff Goldblum has revealed that there are post-production changes afoot for the movie’s plot which are being deliberately designed to make it more meaningful in a post-pandemic era.
Goldblum, who has reprised his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm for the upcoming dino sequel alongside Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill and Laura Dern, says that his Jurassic Park mathematician has always been vocal about the kind of scientific outlook and philosophy that has become a focus for many people during the events of 2020.
“There are things that my character talks about, has always talked a little bit about, the fragility of our species and the global cooperation that’s needed and the foundation and science that is needed,” explained Goldblum on EW’s video series, Couch Surfing. “Oh, and the ethical use of science that’s needed to unite us in trust and connectedness as a family.

Next month, Hulu will ring in Valentine’s Day with some counterprogramming. The streaming service will debut its original series “High Fidelity,” a gender-swapped reimagining of Nick Hornby’s novel of the same name. Previously, the book was adapted into a 2000 movie from Stephen Frears starring John Cusack. Zoë Kravitz stars as Rob Brooks, a music-obsessive record store owner in Brooklyn re-examining her previous romantic relationships to figure out what went wrong.
On the film front, the “Bridget Jones” trilogy, “Buffalo ’66,” “The Fugitive,” “Ghost” and “When Harry Met Sally” are among the new selections being offered in February. Releases from last year, like “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” and “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral,” are also making their way onto the platform.
New seasons of reality series like “The Voice” and “American Idol” will also be available to stream later in the month.

When Jeff Goldblum appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” to promote his latest role as a lobotomist in “The Mountain,” the 66-year-old actor proclaimed that he lived more in 10 minutes than most people do in a lifetime. The next day, he proved it.
Sitting in midtown Manhattan traffic for 45 minutes en route to an NPR interview, Goldblum covered a lot of ground: revisiting his origins in theater, recalling early work with Philip Kaufman and Woody Allen, analyzing the psychology of his blockbuster performances in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and “Independence Day: Resurgence,” worrying about Donald Trump, and explaining his recent quest to discover world-class auteurs. At the end, he squeezed in an impromptu catch-up with Billy Crystal.
Long beloved as a lanky, bespectacled font of charisma and intellect, Goldblum is now a genuine a pop-culture force. Two decades after “Jurassic Park” and “Independence Day” made him a household name,...

“Have I ever missed a deadline?” “Constantly.” Over forty years after making its debut, Joan Micklin Silver’s sophomore feature — following her low-budget 1975 historical drama “Hester Street” — “Between the Lines” is more timely than ever. The zippy, lived-in dramedy chronicles the intersecting lives of a pack of staffers at a Boston alt-weekly that’s already full of drama before it kicks into its central plot: what happens when the paper seems destined to fall prey to a corporate takeover.
As the staff grapples with the possibility that their lives (and livelihoods) are about to be forever changed, the film digs into plenty of still-intriguing ideas about the responsibility of the press, what it means to grow up, and how to hold on to your youthful zest when real-life responsibilities won’t stop calling.

You may have noticed a sudden spike in our coverage of Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. That’s mainly because Thor: Ragnarok arrives on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra Multi Screen Edition on March 6. In honor of the release, we have visually put together 11 comic book Easter eggs from the film with the help of Ragnarok’s director Taika Waititi, who pointed these Easter eggs out in the Thor: Ragnarok Commentary track.
The initial Hela costume is loosely based on the comic design and transitions into the iconic version when she returns to Asgard. Her weapons were based on Gorr the God Butcher’s weapons from the “God of Thunder” comic storyline.
2. Sakaar’s design was taken from Jack Kirby’s artwork. Taika was a fan as a kid and incorporated many shapes and colors from classic comics.

Thor: Ragnarok unveiled a new trailer this past weekend at Comic-Con, wherein the God Of Thunder assembles a team (including The Hulk and his naughty brother, Loki) to battle a “Goddess Of Death” played by Cate Blanchett. One of the most exciting glimpses in the trailer, however, was Jeff Goldblum, who makes his Marvel Universe debut by playing the fanciful Grandmaster. Goldblum previously described the character as “a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells.” He was also apparently encouraged by director Taika Waititi to improvise, so expect lots of charming “uhhhhh”s.
Truly, the entire cast is amazing, with the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston joined by Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, and Anthony Hopkins, who will continue his latter-day habit of only acting with gods, aliens, and robots. Imagine an anarchic collision between Derek Jarman's Jubilee and a gender-flipped Earth Girls Are Easy (anyone?), then toss in a hallucinogenic dash of Romeo and Juliet, and you're at least in an adjacent galaxy to John Cameron Mitchell's How to Talk to Girls at Parties. If those elements sound like random bedfellows, indeed they are in this scrappy blowout of Neil Gaiman's evocative short story of the same name, about a romance-starved South London teenager's night of otherworldly intoxication during the early days of punk.

IGN recently sat down with the director of Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi, and spoke of a number topics surrounding the new film. One topic of discussion had to do with Jeff Goldblum's character, The Grandmaster. In the comics, the character is a blue skinned alien. The movie has Jeff Goldblum appear just as you would expect Jeff Goldblum to appear. Waititi's response?
"Because he did another movie where he was blue."
What film would that be you might be asking? That would be the cinema classic Earth Girls Are Easy. When audiences think of Jeff Goldblum movies, I'm sure that is one that's on top of their lists.
This is why you don't do drugs kids.
Marvel Studios has done a good job of making sure their characters resemble as closely as possible how they look on the comic book page. That isn't always realistic of course. Add to...

Curious as to why Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster isn’t totally blue in Thor: Ragnarok? Blame Earth Girls Are Easy, according to writer-director Taika Waititi, who told IGN straight up that the creative decision was made “because [Goldblum] did another movie where he was blue.”
That movie is, of course, the 1988 sci-fi/musical/comedy oddity in which Jeff Goldblum starred opposite Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans, and from the image embedded below, you’ll see that all three actors donned a hefty amount of prosthetics for the gig. In a follow-up question, Waititi also added that he didn’t want the extensive make-up to hamper Goldblum’s performance in any shape or form, and therefore settled on a more minimalist costume design in time for Thor: Ragnarok.

1988 was a unique year in film history. For every Die Hard and Who Framed Roger Rabbit that debuted, we had odd films like Earth Girls Are Easy, Cocktail, and the comedy Twins, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito who play brothers who were separated at birth. For some reason the movie made over $200 Million Dollars that year (adjusted for inflation.) Keep in mind that Die Hard made only $174 Million Dollars that year (adjusted for inflation.) and you get a sense that all was not right with the world in the latter half of the 1980's.
Yahoo Movies is reporting that there is movement in the long in production sequel to that film which would be called Triplets. Eddie Murphy would star along with Arnold and DeVito playing their other long lost brother. According to Arnold...

Blame The Bad Seed (1956) for every murderous moppet that has skipped across the screen in subsequent years. Village of the Damned, The Omen, The Good Son, The Children, and many more have explored the taboo of killer kiddies. One of the oddest of the bunch is Ed Hunt’s Bloody Birthday (1981), a ridiculously fun turn with not just one, but three mini-Mansons on hand to clean up the schoolyard.
Well, that’s a bit of a misnomer, as our rascally trio tends to focus on grown ups, what with their stupid rules against homicide and premature burial. (Don’t worry – one of the protagonists is a classmate who is put in mortal danger. All’s fair.) Bloody Birthday was rolled out twice; first in limited release in April of ’81, and then in ’86 (also limited release). The film made its money back but didn’t earn any good grace from critics...

Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale's Back to the Future is a classic for many of us but studio interference could have put a very different face on it. Would you have seen a movie titled "Space Man From Pluto" starring Jeff Goldblum? As a huge Back to the Future fan, I've come across my fair share of trivia and interesting tidbits about the creation of the film over the years as I'm sure a lot of you have. We've seen some fun handwritten notes from Gale before on the film's sequel but recently, producer Will McCrabb took to Twitter to revitalize a few classics. For instance, other actors being considered for the lead roles: Jeff Goldblum was the first choice to play Doc Brown. Check out the other contenders. pic.twitter.com/DSVcAOay7D — Will McCrabb (@mccrabb_will) August 27, 2016 Yes, there are alternate realities where Doc Brown was played by Jeff Goldblum,...
