From venue changes and the pandemic to political backlash and the threat of litigation, Salem Horror Fest founder and director Kay Lynch has never been one to back down. The festival’s seventh annual event, which kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, was further proof of her resilience.
After its original headliner, Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy, canceled with less than 48 hours notice, the festival’s entire opening night ceremony was restructured. On lieu of the original $50 ticket charge, the program was made free (with the option to make a donation), costing the festival an untold amount of money.
But the show must go on — and it did so in spectacular fashion with horror icon Linnea Quigley sitting down for a live interview, while the Hocus Pocus screening was replaced by The People’s Joker, previously scheduled to be the festival’s closing film.

Back in 1990, legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley – whose many horror movie credits include The Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons, Witchtrap, Graduation Day, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Nightmare Sisters, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and Silent Night, Deadly Night – made her own hour-long, horror-themed workout video. A release that was appropriately called Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout… and which has now been given a special edition Blu-ray release! Copies can be purchased at This Link.
Directed by Kenneth J. Hall, Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout has the following synopsis: After a nice shower, Linnea does some warm-up stretches and then goes for a run. She encounters some flabby zombies who follow her back to the house, where she leads them in some poolside aerobic routines. Later she unwinds by inviting some girlfriends over for a slumber party and some exercise.

The story behind New York Ninja is almost as incredible as the film itself. In 1984 Taiwanese martial artist and actor John Liu came to New York City with the intention of filming his latest movie there. While he did shoot it, he was so unimpressed by the results he abandoned the project and left the unedited footage in a vault and retired from filmmaking. An there it sat for thirty-five years later the footage came into the hands of film restoration specialists Vinegar Syndrome. They had the technology, they could rebuild it, all except for one critical element. The film’s soundtrack was missing, as was the script.
So they wrote a new one, not a spoof but authentic-sounding 80s style dialogue. And they hired a...

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone that my favorite movie featuring Gunnar Hansen and chainsaws is The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a monument to gritty, independent cinema that drips with sweat, (mostly imagined) blood, and 1970s-era fears of the collapsing working class. Hansen himself is perfect as Leatherface as he imbues the character with layers that give him sympathy without taking away from the fact that he’s still utterly terrifying. Cap it all off with perhaps the greatest final frames ever put to celluloid and you have a grindhouse masterpiece.
But then there’s my second favorite movie featuring Gunnar Hansen and chainsaws, which kicks off with the following warning:
The chainsaws used in this motion picture are real and dangerous! They are handled here by seasoned professionals. The makers of this motion picture advise strongly against anyone attempting to perform these stunts at home.

When you grew up loving movies movies the way I did, it can be lonely. Every Sunday all the other kids gathered around with their families and watched football while I hoped for a blizzard to freeze the game out so the TV stations would have to resort to playing old Hammer flicks. Everyone else could get away with wearing team jerseys all year, but I could just wear a costume one day a year.
Terribly sad, I know. I promise I’m getting to the point.
I loved movies. Still do, but back then, it was a quiet love. If I talked about anything other than Star Wars, then I was weird. Sure, people liked movies, but no one Really loved them. It was kids' stuff, even the harder stuff was just meant to be a distraction, not a passion. I was weird for loving this stuff,...

Some very sad news: the man behind Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has died.
Gunnar Hansen, who originated the Leatherface role in the horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, died Saturday of pancreatic cancer at his home in Maine. The Icelandic-born actor was 68.
The news was announced by Hansen's agent, Mike Eisenstadt, who called Leatherface "one of the most iconic evil figures in the history of cinema."
The 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was directed and co-written by Tobe Hooper. To horror fans, Leatherface was the cannibalistic hero, protecting family from a group of trespassing teenagers with nothing but a chainsaw.
Hanson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. He moved to Maine with his family at the age of five. He worked as a computer operator after finishing school and began theatre work during college. Hanson studied English and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Texas.

Gunnar Hansen, who played one of the scariest, most iconic mass murderers ever, is dead. Hansen made a career out of his role as Leatherface in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Although the movie was released in 1974, when he was a young man, Hansen proudly revived the role in various forms over the years. He played "The Master" in the 1988 "Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers" and the captain in the 2009 "Reykjavik What Watching Massacre. Hansen took the role of...

HitFix's recent spate of "Best Year in Film History" pieces inevitably spurred some furious debate among our readers, with some making compelling arguments for years not included in our pieces (2007 and 1968 were particularly popular choices) and others openly expressing their bewilderment at the inclusion of others (let's just say 2012 took a beating). In the interest of giving voice to your comments, below we've rounded up a few of the most thoughtful, passionate, surprising and occasionally incendiary responses to our pieces, including my own (I advocated for The Year of Our Lynch 2001, which is obviously the best). Here we go... Superstar commenter "A History of Matt," making an argument for 1968: The Graduate. Bullit. The Odd Couple. The Lion in Winter. Planet of the Apes. The Thomas Crown Affair. Funny Girl. Rosemary's Baby. And of course, 2001, A Space Odyssey. And that's only a taste of the greatness of that year. "Lothar the Flatulant,...

The debacle of the eighties with many films, either good or bad becoming the victims of censorship is something that we’d rather forget. As a teen just getting into the world of low-budget horror movies, and straight to VHS fare, there were a handful of directors whose work I would buy and/or rent without fail and without any prior knowledge (besides the spiel on the back of the box) of what i was getting into. One of those directors was Fred Olen Ray, the genius behind such films as Scalps, Star Slammer, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Evil Toons, Cyclone and the awesome Scream Queen Hot Tub Party. However in the intervening years it’s safe to say I haven’t had the urge to watch as many of his flicks as I did in the 80s/90s heyday...

Motel Hell is available now on Blu-ray. That information alone should be enough to send horror fans shrieking into the streets to party until the wee hours of the morning. And we here all want to get into the festivities as well.
To celebrate the release of Motel Hell on Blu-ray, we've compiled our Top 9 Chilling Chainsaw Kills. Of course this is in reference to the iconic chainsaw scene in the climax of the film. There was something simply unforgettable about Rory Calhoun wielding a ridiculously long chainsaw while wearing a pig head like a Halloween mask. Classic!
But before we get to our top horrific movie chainsaw kills, we have some honorable mentions to share with you. We've got to go way back to find some of the earliest on-screen chainsaw kills. We came up with Dark of the Sun (1968) and The Wizard of Gore (1970) for two of the first buzzsaw butcherings.

Ask any self-respecting slasher buff about the genre’s ‘golden age’ and they will doubtlessly wax poetic about the plasma-packed pot-boilers of the 1980s – the decade of destruction that gave us Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and the transsexual teen-tormenter of the Sleepaway Camp series. Given the label’s name, what better way for 88 Films to celebrate this halcyon era of horror than with a series of numbered and collectible sanguine-splashed shockers from the period of VHS and video nasties?

Since horror, as a genre, tends to have a smaller viewing audience than action films, romantic comedies, and tear-jerking love stories, it seems like the available titles are at a higher risk for going on manufacturing moratorium. When that happens, fans of the genre frequently turn to eBay bidding wars, scouring pawnshops, and even trying to locate bootleg copies of the title in question for no less than a king’s ransom. Vigilant collectors, such as myself, tend to keep an eye on titles we suspect are at risk for going out of print... for example, Code Red and Blue Underground both tend to have a good number of titles go out of print at any given time. Staying on top of titles destined for moratorium makes the cash one must fork over for a copy of an in-demand title much less painful; often when a film first falls out of production,...

One of the first and most popular “Scream Queens” from the 1980’s was a girl from Iowa who moved to Los Angeles in the late 70’s with her family. Linnea Quigley started with small roles in even smaller films but she built up her resume and got her big break playing “Trash” in Return of the Living Dead (1985). Since then, she has amassed a wealth of films that cemented her status as a B-movie queen, including roles in such films as Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama (1988), Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988), Nightmare Sisters (1988), Night of the Demons (1988), Vice Academy (1989), and many others.
Linnea, along with fellow B-movie actresses Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer were responsible for establishing their Scream Queen status in the 80’s with a prolific resume of horror, sci-fi, and cult film appearances that hasn’t really been equaled since. Whenever anyone...

Scalps (1983)
Directed by: Fred Olen Ray
Written by: Fred Olen Ray
Starring: Jo-Ann Robinson (D.J.), Richard Hench (Randy/Black Claw), Roger Maycock (Kershaw Ellerbe), Frank McDonald (Ben), Carol Sue Flockhart (Louise), Barbara Magnusson (Ellen), Kirk Alyn (Professor Machen), Carroll Borland (Dr. Sharon Reynolds), Cynthia Hartline (Ann), Forrest Ackerman(Professor Trentwood), George Randall (Billy), Jay Walker (Kyle)
I went into Scalps with the notion that I was going to hate it but wound up being pleasantly surprised by the film. This movie was far from perfect but I enjoyed it for the most part. First released in the United States in 1983 with one of Continental Video’s trademark “double feature” VHS and later released as an anniversary DVD.
The premise for this one is fairly simple. Several college kids taking archaeology classes together travel to an ancient Indian burial ground to search for artifacts.

Welcome to another installment of It Came From 1980X where I tackle the 80′s like a running clothes line fresh off the turnbuckle. Tonight we have a double feature for you straight from Continental Video. Don’t know Contintental Video? I’m not surprised, but I assure you by the end of this whole thing you most certainly will know them, fear them and maybe enjoy them a bit better. They’ve put out so much of what you love, but I don’t think they were marketed nearly as well as Midnight, Wizard, Canon or Media. For Christ’s sake somebody get me a T-shirt of this beautiful company. The double feature in question comes courtesy of Vhsps as is often the case. The Slayer and Scalps were released as a part of a special promotion as is stated on the cover of the VHS (or in this case handsome DVD rip).

Among the charges most regularly levelled at Steven Spielberg is that his movies are over-egged puddings that trade in rank melodrama and infantilising sentimentality. A whinnying chorus of such dismissive jeers greeted the arrival of War Horse (2011, DreamWorks, 12) late last year, with some predictably sniffy manure being thrown at this most populist auteur's emotional Grand National. Admittedly neither understatement nor brevity has ever been Spielberg's strong point, hence the much repeated joke: War Horse walks into a bar, barman says: "Why the long film?"
Yet to complain that this nostalgically cinematic adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's bestselling book (and feted stage adaptation) is somewhat soft around the edges is to forget that the source story was specifically aimed at younger readers. No, this is not a four-legged revisiting of the beach scenes from Saving Private Ryan, which portrayed the horrors of war in shockingly visceral form.

A clever and catchy name can say it all. In fact, if you have the right name on a film, that can be a more effective marketing device than even the most brilliant put-together trailer. Aside from the “grindhouse” classics of yesteryear, like Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!, I Spit on Your Grave, and Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (just to name a few of the hundreds of eye-catching titles), there have been many films recently resorting to titles that say it all. Snakes on A Plane, The Human Centipede, and Hobo With a Shotgun are some of the recent titles that need no introduction or no trailer. Just the name gives people all the info they need to know and will get people to come out and see the film regardless if it’s good or bad. Thankfully the Soska Sisters have more than just a clever name (and some pretty faces...

I want to say right off that Britt Ekland‘s dance scene from The Wicker Man (the original!) is my favorite of all time. Even though, from what I’ve read, a Scottish woman acted as a body double for all the shots of her lower half (no point in letting facts ruin one’s fantasies, though). I think the Flickchart blog caps off at PG-13, so I can’t actually show you a clip from the film. You should watch the whole movie if you haven’t seen it, anyway, since it’s one of those classics that all upstanding movie aficionados should have under their belt.
I know a lot of you out there immediately thought of Salma Hayek‘s snake dance in From Dusk Till Dawn when you saw that this article was about horror dancing. Sure, I get twitterpated over Hayek as much as the next guy.

"Hey, somebody get some light over here; Trash is taking off her clothes again." I remember those words like it was yesterday. And I should; I watched that scene of Linnea Quigley disrobing enough times to render my VHS copy of The Return of the Living Dead basically unwatchable. At least for that minute or so of the film. And it's with loving memories like this one that we celebrate our favorite scream queens in two new projects dropping this fall.
Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era follows the careers of three of the best -- Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, and Brinke Stevens -- in all their shrill glory.
But wait! True to '80s excess, we have more! Yet another project featuring a couple of our favorite ladies of low-budget horror is on the horizon. On November 15th Tempe DVD will release...

Once again, it's time for more various oddball trailers from the far reaches of cinema obscurity. So, without any further ado, let's check out some "coming attractions"! This week with an all "Girls" theme!
Gas Pump Girls (1979)
The late 70's was the last great hoo-rah for sleazy sexploitation films made specifically for the drive-in theater before cable TV and home video took over as the preferred (and more convenient) method for those looking for mindless T&A to take in a flick.
One such late 70's drive-in sex comedy was Gas Pump Girls directed by Joel Bender.
The film centers around June (Kristen Baker from Friday the 13th Part 2 and Midnight Madness), a ridiculously sexy young girl who takes over a gas station formerly run by her uncle. As you'd expect, business isn't exactly booming, but when June and her equally sexy friends (notably Sandy Johnson from Halloween and H.

When last we reported on Fred Olen Ray’s newest foray into CGI-free creature featuredom, it was titled Dire Wolf. The distributors must not have liked the word “dire” because the title is now Dino Wolf. Hey, that “dino” suffix sure has done b-movie wonders for crocs and sharks so why not a mammal for a change?
Maxwell Caulfield (Empire Records) and TV’s “Buck Rogers” Gil Gerard star in this bloodbath from the venerable b-moviemaker responsible for such cult favorites as Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers and Evil Toons/ about scientists regenerating a dire wolf from a nearly fossilized skeleton using human stem cells that results in the spawning of a human-dire wolf monstrosity that breaks loose and terrorizes the small nearby mountain village of Santa Mira Springs.

David DeCoteau Legendary scream queen Brinke Stevens (Teenage Exorcist, Haunting Fear) announced on her official Facebook wall that this week she is reteaming with cult director David DeCoteau (Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama) to star in "Cougar Cult".
Cougar Cult starts filming this week. The film will reunite Brinke Stevens with fellow scream queen alum Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons, The Return of the Living Dead) and Michelle Bauer (Nightmare Sisters, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers).
It's nice to see David DeCoteau getting back to his scream queen roots after spending over a decade with scream twinks in such efforts as Voodoo Academy and The Brotherhood. Or maybe given the title, he plans on merging the two together in one film? We'll just have to wait and see....

Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer are the focus of horror fan/filmmaker/gentleman scholar Jason Paul Collum's new documentary Screaming in High Heels.
Jason Paul Collum has long made a career, of sorts, of understanding the women who we call Scream Queens. His prior documentary, Something to Scream About, featured interviews with a range of actresses with full careers in horror such as Debbie Rochon, Julie Strain, and Felissa Rose, and last year he made a documentary about the woman-directed Slumber Party Massacre series.

There’s something about disaster movies that make them fun, no matter how cheesy, and here’s the latest. Anchor Bay will release the airborne thriller Turbulent Skies on DVD on July 26.
Casper Van Dien looks good -- before looking up! -- in Turbulent Skies.
In the film, everything appears to be fine on a fully loaded 747 jet airliner that’s equipped with a revolutionary automated piloting system, until the plane veers off course … directly into the path of a huge storm! When the airplane heads for a large city and the Secretary of Defense authorizes the military to shoot the it out of the air, it’s up to the system’s inventor and his team to avert the disaster.
Turbulent Skies is a DVD premiere movie that sports all the appropriate straight-to-dvd credits: The film is directed and co-written by Fred Olen Ray (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers) and stars...

Yuletide ghouls continue their march toward the big screen as the Joe R. Lansdale project Christmas With the Dead gears up to shoot—but now they’ll be doing so for a different director.

Love him or hate him, one thing is for sure: Director David DeCoteau is a legend in the horror entertainment field. That can't be denied. He's the man responsible for 80's camp classics such as Nightmare Sisters and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama. Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama gathered a once in a lifetime B movie cast including Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Brinke Stevens (Grandma's House), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Robin Stille (The Slumber Party Massacre), Hal Havins (Night of the Demons), and George 'Buck' Flower (They Live). While Sorority Babes was one of the most downright fun horror films of the 80's, another element stood out about the film, one that would go on to shape and define David DeCoteau's career. See, David DeCoteau cast this complete unknown named Andras Jones in the lead role. Right off the bat, you could...

Bruce Campbell is reportedly planning a horror equivalent of The Expendables. If this is the case, who would star in it, and what gory events would take place? Here are Duncan’s suggestions…
Now, news that Bruce Campbell is reportedly planning a horror equivalent of The Expendables is, in itself, enough to make me want to proclaim that the world is a beautiful place, filled with beautiful things, as merely putting just Bruce Campbell in a film is normally enough to get me to watch it. But, let's all calm down for a minute and look a bit closer at the facts.

B-movie legend Fred Olen Ray is hard at work on a movie called "Super Shark Attack," which looks more ridiculous than "Sharktopus" and "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus" combined. We now have a trailer for it. Check it out below. In the new movie, the shark has emerged after centuries of being frozen in suspended animation. But unlike other sharks, it has evolved and has now swim, walk on land and apparently fly. It's as cheesy as eighties movies come, but Dempsey's fun gigolo turn deserves a shout-out.9. Linda Ash (Mira Sorvino), Mighty AphroditeWoody Allen loves to write prostitutes into his stories, and Ash is among his most memorable.
