As The Adventures of Maid Marian begins it is the year 1199 in Merry Olde England. Robin is off fighting with King Richard. Marian is hiding out in a nunnery, occasionally sneaking out to poach a deer for starving villagers.
Then the word arrives, the king has died and his troops, including Robin, will be returning. Overjoyed, Marian rushes off to meet him. But she’s not the only one who wants to welcome him back. William De Wendenal the former Sheriff of Nottingham wants to revisit ye olde tymes with him as well.
As many times and ways as the tale of Robin Hood has been told I honestly can only think of one version that’s told it from Marian’s point of view, the BBC comedy Maid Marian and Her Merry Men.

After a disastrous attempt to rob the carriage of the Earl of Pembroke, famed highwayman Dick Turpin finds himself on the run in the English countryside with the only thing of value he was able to steal – the Earl’s feisty daughter, Elizabeth.
Steve Lawson mines familiar territory once again with The Highwayman: The Legend of Dick Turpin… Yes, after bringing us films about Van Helsing, Jack the Ripper, Jekyll & Hyde and most recently the Musketeers, Lawson picks up the tale of the legendary roguish highwayman. A character who, once upon a time, was a focus of a myriad of films and TV shows yet nowadays seems to have been left on by the wayside (pun intended).

G. Gordon Liddy, the colorful chief operative in the Watergate scandal who went to prison for his crimes and later cut a wide swatch across pop culture as a talk show host and actor, has died. He was 90.
His son, Thomas P. Liddy, confirmed his death to the Washington Post, but did not provide a cause.
Liddy held many roles during his lifetime, including as a lawyer, FBI agent, talk show host and actor. However, he is best known as the chief operative in the Nixon administration’s White House Plumbers unit, which organized and carried out a burglary of the DNC headquarters in the Watergate building. The scandal rocked American politics and led to Nixon’s resignation from the presidency in 1974. Liddy was ultimately convicted of conspiracy, burglary, illegal wiretapping and refused to testify during the Senate committee hearing on the scandal. As a result, Liddy served over four years in prison.

Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard assembles a group of Seattle all-stars for a cover of “Highwayman,” the Jimmy Webb song about the eternal spirit that became the signature of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash’s country music supergroup, the Highwaymen.
As part of a benefit concert supporting Seattle Children’s Hospital, Gibbard recruited a small army of Pacific Northwest musicians: Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, and Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan join Gibbard in each taking a verse of the song.

An inaugural screenwriting lab co-founded by Margot Robbie, designed to help women writers break into the action and franchise film market, has seen a stunning 100% sales return on six original pitches.
Each of the six women writers in the room marked their first major sale following the workshop, all in the action or genre arena and all with commitments for distribution. It’s not only a win for representation in a male-dominated space, it’s a victory for feature film sales at a time when coronavirus has plunged the theatrical market into chaos.
The program is titled The Lucky Exports Pitch Program, and was created by Christina Hodson and Morgan Howell of Hodson Exports and Robbie, Josey McNamara, and Tom Ackerley of LuckyChap Entertainment. The six writers include Sue Chung, Charmaine DeGraté, Eileen Jones, Faith Liu, Dagny Looper, and Maria Sten. .

The Lucky Exports Pitch Program, founded by Christina Hodson’s Hodson Exports and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, has sold five action feature pitches to major film companies including Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, New Line, and Thunder Road, and is in development on a high concept television series.
The Lucky Exports Pitch Program was created by Hodson and Morgan Howell of Hodson Exports and Robbie, Josey McNamara, and Tom Ackerley of LuckyChap Entertainment
The program’s goal was to create opportunities for female-identifying writers to gain exposure and the experience needed in order to be hired on studio/franchise jobs. The program was a huge success with all the feature pitches sold, some in competitive situations. The pitch sales mark the first feature deals for each writer.
From Nov. 4th to Dec. 6th, 2019, six female-identifying writers participated in an action focused writers’ room. Starting in most cases with no more than a logline or title,...

A few years before his death last September, longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter partook of one of his usual traditions. He emailed a bunch of fresh lyrics to one of his post–Jerry Garcia songwriting collaborators and asked if that artist wanted to set the words to music. That year, the recipient was David Nelson, who had known Hunter and Garcia since their days playing bluegrass together in the early Sixties, years before the Dead.
Nelson, who went on to co-found New Riders of the Purple Sage, wrote melodies for those Hunter lyrics,...

The Highwomen come steeped in history — a history they rewrite, literally and figuratively. Their name, and the title track of their terrific self-titled debut, alludes to “The Highwayman,” Jimmy Webb’s 1977 song-turned-hit signature of the Highwaymen, the Eighties supergroup of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. Rewritten with Webb for a new singer-songwriting collective — Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby — “The Highwomen” swaps the original’s mythic male narratives for female ones: an immigrant mom who dies fleeing Honduras through Mexico, a “witch” hanged in Salem,...

On the heels of the announcement that Martin Scorsese’s gangster epic “The Irishman” will receive a nearly four-week exclusive theatrical release before it becomes available to stream, Netflix has now confirmed it will give nine other fall movies a similar theaters-first rollout: “The Laundromat,” “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The King,” “Earthquake Bird,” “Marriage Story,” “Klaus,” “I Lost My Body,” “Atlantics,” and “The Two Popes.” The news marks Netflix’s biggest commitment to theatrical exhibition in a single movie season. Netflix officially became a member of the MPAA in January.
Not all the films are slated for Oscar contention. Netflix is also using theaters to help differentiate its movies and make its filmmakers happy; this spring Netflix put into theaters both John Hancock’s “The Highwayman,” starring Kevin Costner, and J.C. Chandor’s “Triple Frontier” starring Ben Affleck.)

Bonnie & Clyde aficionados will have a field day with Netflix’s upcoming The Highwaymen, a new take on the notorious Depression-era killers that chronicles the much-examined crime spree from the perspective of the lawmen who hunted down the bank-robbing lovers.
Today Netflix released the first trailer for director John Lee Hancock’s film – which stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson – and the filmmaker’s approach is an interesting one: As new crime-busting techniques are changing the face of law enforcement, courtesy of the fledgling FBI and technological advances like airplane surveillance, the hunt for Bonnie & Clyde is spearheaded by a couple old-fashioned “cowboys,” in the words of Texas governor Ma Ferguson (Kathy Bates).
Actually, those cowboys are the former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer (Costner) and Maney Gault (Harrelson). Hamer was played in the 1967 classic Bonnie and Clyde by Denver Pyle with a decidedly villainous sneer.
