Next Generation fans were shocked when Worf returned as a blissed-out pacifist in Star Trek: Picard‘s third and final season — but it turns out there was a good reason for that.
The newly released DVD set for Picard Season 3 (available now from Paramount Home Entertainment) contains two and a half hours of special features, including deleted scenes like the one posted above. In it, Worf explains to his old crewmate Riker why he dropped the bloodthirsty aggression that characterized his time on Next Generation. Worf says he’s been hunting shape-shifting changelings for decades, “slaying with certainty villains with innocent faces.

Prior to creating "Star Trek," Gene Roddenberry had spent a decade as a TV journeyman, writing for multiple hit shows of the day including "Highway Patrol," "I Led 3 Lives," "Dr. Kildare," and 24 episodes of "Have Gun – Will Travel." He became adept at multiple genres and had a very good sense of how TV trends flowed by the time he went to pitch "Star Trek." Famously, Roddenberry pitched his sci-fi show as "Wagon Train to the Stars," referring to the massive hit Western that debuted in 1957 and ran until 1965. That notorious pitch has worked its way into known Trek lore and can be heard quoted by good Trekkies everywhere. These days, "Star Trek" is far more popular than "Wagon Train" ever was.
Looking over "Star Trek," one finds a lot of Western-inflected language, notably how space is referred to as the Final Frontier. While Roddenberry wanted to pointedly avoid any...

After initially announcing Starship Troopers: Extermination last November, developer Offworld Industries has that the 16-player, squad-based co-op Fps will arrive in Early Access on Steam on May 17th. The team plans on using Early Access to collaborate with the community through the game’s earliest development stages, relying on their feedback to help guide what features and mechanics to build upon before the game’s eventual transition into 1.0.
The Early Access edition of Starship Troopers: Extermination will be available at $24.99 Usd upon release, which will increase as more content is introduced ahead of the 1.0 launch. From day one of Early Access, the title will already boast both strategy and combat-oriented gameplay. Players can construct and reinforce bases of operations while not in heavy combat, creating a safe structure to respawn, regroup and rearm themselves in preparation for Bug-exterminating co-op play. These bases are protected from enemy spawns, and base-building isn...

Adam Nimoy chats to us about his documentary honouring his father, the late, great Leonard Nimoy.
The death of Leonard Nimoy was a sad occasion for all fans of Star Trek, but filmmaker and director Adam Nimoy didn’t just lose a cultural icon – he lost a father. As a result, Nimoy’s planned documentary about Spock and the character’s impact was expanded to examine his late father’s life and the the not-always-perfect relationship between the two of them.

Donald Trump is no better than a Denebian slime devil in the eyes of a long list of “Star Trek” actors, producers and writers. “Star Trek” cast members, producers and writers from all of the franchise’s series and movies have endorsed a new Facebook group called Trek Against Trump. Among those supporting the group are Jj Abrams (rebooted movie franchise), Bryan Fuller (“Deep Space 9,” “Voyager,” “Discovery”), Gates McFadden (“The Next Generation”), Walter Koenig (original series) and Scott Bakula (“Enterprise”). “Never has there been a presidential candidate who stands in such complete opposition to the ideals of the Star Trek universe as Donald Trump,...

“Star Trek: Discovery” will officially have a female lead, TheWrap has learned. The news came just ahead of series showrunner Bryan Fuller‘s appearance at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Wednesday. No word yet on exactly who the female character will be or if she will be the captain of the Discovery, but the news is hardly surprising. Fuller has spoken at length about the importance of diversity within the “Star Trek” universe. While members of the Cinelinx team have had the opportunity to check out a variety of Vr experiences within the last couple years, I've been waiting. For 50 years, the many incarnations of Star Trek have been boldly going where other shows wouldn’t.
The recent announcement that Hikaru Sulu (John Cho) will be gay in this weekend’s third installment of the Star Trek reboot films has garnered intense attention, contention, and debate. Many jilted fan boys have cried foul over director Jason Lin and writer Simon Pegg’s decision to pay homage to the original Sulu George Takei, claiming that it ruins the integrity of the character. Many have rejoiced in the “first” Lgbtq character in the franchise. Both of these camps are misguided. Star Trek has always been a place for Lgbtq representation — even when studios and public opinion refused to allow it to be overt.
Star Trek: The Original Series was groundbreaking in many ways. It was the vehicle through which one of the first televised interracial kisses occurred between Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). The...

The film where Jean-Luc Picard met James T Kirk: we take a look back at Star Trek: Generations...
This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Generations
Entropy. That is the ultimate theme in Star Trek: Generations. As signified by the long tracking shots of a bottle of champagne, culminating with it smashing upon the bow of the new Enterprise. The mechanism by which all change happens. How order turns to chaos, and why all good things must come to an end.
It’s also the only word that can possibly integrate the two disparate halves of the film. The treatise on the afterlife and impermanence, versus Data discovering the meaning of laughter. But really, that’s clutching at straws (and that’s coming from the guy who defended Star Trek V). For all the good ideas and fascinating moments, Generations is the curate’s egg...

The Alien films have been endlessly spoofed in popular culture, and with its bevy of cinematic references, The Simpsons has proven to be particularly fertile ground for clever tributes to the cult horror/sci-fi series. On the 37th anniversary of Ridley Scott's 1979 original, here's a brief history of the show's loving homages to the cult franchise. Did we miss any? Let us know in the comments. (All references compiled from the Alien Anthology Wiki.) Season 5, Episode 15 ("Deep Space Homer") The first instance of The Simpsons' Alien spoofery came during Season 5, when, during a segment of the uber-violent Itchy and Scratchy Show, Itchy is shown bursting from Scratchy's stomach in the style of H.R. 1C Company will release a new tower defence game Infinium Strike for PC in July, with PS4 and Xbox One versions due to follow before the end of 2016. The Kickstarter-funded title will blend action and strategy elements into a tried and tested formula and is developed by former members of Ubisoft.
Infinium Strike is set hundreds of years in the future where humans are on the brink of extinction after decades of intergalactic colonisation. The Wrog, a race of sentient alien ships, will stop at nothing until mankind is eradicated. All hope appeared lost until the discovery of a liquid metal known as Infinium.
Harnessing the power of Infinium, humanity has built Freedom Strike, the strongest battlecarrier in the universe. As chief weapons officer of the Freedom Strike, it is up to the player to maintain the spaceship’s defences as the Wrog attack from four sides.
Infinium Strike offers two game modes.

The Star Trek franchise will be 50 years old this September. It’s one of the most popular and enduring of all TV and film franchises, still going strong nearly 50 years after its debut in 1966. A third film of the rebooted series is in the works. Cinelinx looks at the ever-popular sci-fi property as it warps into its 50th year.
Star Trek, a show that didn’t do very well in the ratings when it first debuted, has become a multi-media monster. It has gone from television to cartoons, novels, comic books, video games and films. Many of the character names have become an iconic part of pop-culture. The real-life space shuttle Enterprise was named in honor of the space vessel from Star Trek. The whole concept of the sci-fi convention was begun by the fan-created ‘Trek’ conventions of the early seventies. Few franchises can claim to have had the impact...

“Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime” fell into my radar a few months back. My boyfriend told me we should try it, I said “sure!” then we got distracted by “Halo 5.” Enter a few nights ago. We were hanging out on New Year’s Day and we wanted to play something together however since a lot of games are opting out of couch co-op we didn’t have any options already installed. We remembered his suggestion of this game months ago and looked it up. It was really cheap so we bought it, downloaded it, and immediately loved it.
“Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime” is one of the most perfect couch co-op games for couples I have found yet.
Lds takes place on the Spaceship Gumball as you attempt to rescue bunnies throughout space and triumph over the evil forces of Anti-Love using the power of teamwork and love. Deep space is a dangerous place,...

Worf himself, chats to us about Ted 2, Star Trek, Jason Statham, and the status of The Worf Chronicles...
For over 250 episodes, Michael Dorn played the iconic role of Worf on Star Trek The Next Generation and its spin-off, Deep Space 9. Now he’s reprised the role – sort of – for Ted 2, which is released on Blu-Ray and DVD today. We used this opportunity to talk to the man himself to get the story behind his cameo, as well as an update on his current projects.
So, let’s start with the main event. How did you get involved in Ted 2?
Seth Macfarlane and I met when we doing Family Guy. He had the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast on the show and I met him then, and then we talked after that - just briefly - because he was interested in doing Blunt Talk with Patrick Stewart.

Z Nation, made by schlock specialists The Asylum, has just been renewed for season 3. Here's why you should be watching...
If AMC's The Walking Dead is the miserabilist emo-goth teen of the televisual zombie apocalypse, then SyFy's Z Nation is its swaggering, devil-may-care little cousin, who's having too much fun smoking weed, gorging on pop-culture tropes and generally dicking around to waste its time indulging in any gravely serious, existential, pseudo-political clap-trap. Therein lies the secret to Z Nation's appeal: it's fun. It laughs at itself, and wants you to laugh along, too.
Comparisons with The Walking Dead are inevitable, and not just because the two shows share the zombie apocalypse as a backdrop. Z Nation is made by The Asylum, a production company that's become synonymous with jumping on a bandwagon, copying the schematics for that bandwagon, and then producing their own bandwagon that is...

Star Trek returns to the small screen in 2017 - and here are a few things we'd love to see in the new series...
More than a decade since the cancellation of Star Trek: Enterprise ended 18 years of continuous Star Trek production, CBS has announced that the show is returning for a new series in in 2017, showrun by Alex Kurtzman and unconnected to the big-screen reboot once helmed by Jj Abrams.
It’s fair to say that for many Star Trek fans, this news is both extremely exciting and extremely worrying - because the only thing that’s worse than having no Star Trek show is having one we don’t warm to.
At this point, there’s almost no way of knowing what the new Star Trek show might be like. But that doesn’t stop us having a wish list of what we’d like to see.

Across film and TV, there have been many Star Trek projects that never got the greenlight. Such as these...
Since 1964 (yep) there have been Star Trek projects that simply didn't make it to the big or small screen. And before Star Trek's second (proper) coming in 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the franchise had more than its fair share of attempts to come to life, and then be reborn.
This lot in fact...
Star Trek – The (original) Original Series
Here's a thought – the original Star Trek series wasn't supposed to be the original Star Trek series.
The pilot that sold the show to NBC was in fact the second pilot, after the original, entitled The Cage, filmed at the end of 1964, was deemed too cerebral. That's on top of having other multiple issues that TV executives (and test audiences) of the time couldn't cope with – you know, like gender equality in the workplace.

From Star Trek: Generations through to Star Trek: Nemesis - here are 47 nerdy spots in the Next Generation films...
Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, the Star Trek cinematic outings have proved to be a smorgasbord of references and famous actors (or those who would go on to be), and often had complex behind the scenes events that stopped some rather, ahem, fascinating moments making it to the final version. We found lots of nerdy spots in the first six films here.
This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.
Oh, and there are some major spoilers...

This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.
Oh, and there are some major spoilers...

The Simpsons has pastiched hundreds of movies in its time. From Hitchcock to Kubrick to Disney, we select our top 30 favourites...
The Simpsons has a long history of peppering its stories with pop culture references, and some of the show’s finest gags stem from the world of cinema. These have ranged from the briefest of quotes, to full on shot-for-shot parodies and extended episode-long homages.
Most striking in trying to put this list together was the sheer volume of movie references there are to choose from. In pretty much any given episode of The Simpsons, there are at least a couple, with nods to James Bond, 2001: A Space Odyssey and the work of Alfred Hitchcock proving three of the most regular candidates. The tributes to numerous great horror movies in the show’s Treehouse Of Horror episodes could have been used to fill this list all on their own.

“Otis, plug it in!”
It’s been a tough week for horror fans. First Robert Z’Dar passed away, and now Tom Towles. The actor would have a cult following if he had co-starred in nothing else but Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer in 1986. His Otis was based on Ottis Toole, the vile drifter who, along with Henry Lee Lucas (played in the film by Michael Rooker), left a trail of bodies in their wake. Towles was scary-good as Otis, and went on to co=star in a number of cult horror films including Tom Savini’s Night Of The Living Dead remake, The Borrower, and Fortress. Towles became a regular for director Rob Zombie with roles in House Of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’S Rejects, and Halloween. He had not appeared in a film since 2008, but had become a staple on the horror movie convention circuit. He died...

As Paramount hunts for a director to replace Roberto Orci on the next Star Trek movie, is it time to win back more core fans?
The departure of Roberto Orci as director of the as-yet-untitled third film in Jj Abram's rebooted Star Trek continuity has cast a little doubt on the future of a franchise that has already spent a lot of time on unsure footing. Although Star Trek's new cast is undeniably packed with talent and the look of the films has been both technically and aesthetically stunning, the stories have arguably failed to capture the same newly-invigorated feeling. Both movies have been watchable blockbusters by current standards, but for all their budget and star power, neither has arguably been close to reaching the iconic heights of Star Trek at its best.
Admittedly, that may be a biased assessment. If you grew up with the original series, or Star Trek: The Next Generation,...

Space. The final frontier. Also: so hot right now! This year, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy—to say nothing of the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens—continued feeding audiences' appetites for all things extraterrestrial, picking up where the Oscar-winning Gravity and rebooted Star Trek series left off. There are sequels coming for Star Trek, Prometheus, and Guardians, Marvel will keep expanding its cosmic universe in Captain Marvel, and, on the small screen, Syfy is planning a rebooted version of the grandaddy of all space operas, Arthur C. Clarke's...

Doctor Who, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, The Simpsons... Juliette talks us through 10 great TV anniversary episodes...
With so many TV shows being cancelled after a season or two, it’s perhaps not surprising that those that keep going long enough to reach a significant milestone often want to mark the occasion in some way. Such celebratory episodes usually feature plenty of nods, in-jokes and references to past episodes and characters (frequently involving special guest stars from the show’s past returning in some form) and tend to be either light, sometimes metafictional comedy episodes, or extremely dramatic game-changers following which the show may never be the same again. If you’re not crying with laughter, you’ll probably be weeping at the emotional trauma inflicted by the story.

Writer-director David Hewlett tipped us off to a 3-minute clip from his feature film Debug. The clip finds Tenika Davis encountering Jason Momoa before something pretty gnarly goes down with her fingernails. You can watch the clip here.
Hewlett completed the film this year and it's ready to be seen by distributors. Jeananne Goossen and Adrian Holmes co-star.

Rob counts down the top 50 episodes of TV's longest-running animated series, The Simpsons...
Since its debut in 1989, across 552 episodes and 25 seasons, The Simpsons has become one of the most revered and beloved TV programmes of all time. It’s a true cultural phenomenon that’s influenced not just animation, but all areas of TV comedy and sitcom. For so many of us, its quotes and catchphrases have permeated our everyday vernacular, from single words like “crisitunity” and “embiggen” to phrases “you don’t win friends with salad” and “everything’s coming up Milhouse.”
Personal opinions may vary, but for me the show’s peak years were from season 4 through to 10. They’re consistently funny, all killer and no filler runs with barely a dud episode to be found between 1992-1998. Past this point the standard becomes a little more mixed, and recent seasons have been distinctly average at best. The...

Nasa has published their findings that microwave thrusters, generally believed to be impossible, actually work in spite of the fact that they violate the law of conservation of momentum. British scientist Roger Shawyer invented the EmDrive several years ago, and Chinese scientists confirmed its functionality last year in a test that produced 720mN of thrust, which is enough to power a satellite, but the West didn’t pay much attention. The Nasa team tested a slightly different model built by Us scientist Guido Fetta, and were able to produce 30-50 mN, significantly less than the Chinese team, but enough to prove the theory. So how does it work? Nasa isn’t claiming to know.

What Is This Block Of Text? Hi, my name is Da7e and every Friday I write something about Star Wars. It's usually about sequel trilogy, the spin-off movies or Star Wars Rebels and occasionally, I'm the first one to write about things. Important things. Like this week: wigs.
It’s been an interesting week in Star Wars: Episode VII stuff. All the best things remain unconfirmed whispers on forums and in comments sections. The production has really locked themselves down and I’m getting the general sense that anyone with access to the story has been given a crash course in diverting attention from the sort of details we think we want to know.
I would argue, and have been arguing, that the more we know about Star Wars: Episode VII the better because thats how people interact with things they love endlessly, but I can very easily see the flip side,...

Kane must have plucked the short straw of fate the day the Nostromo crew explored the transmission-emitting spacecraft in 1979′s Alien, for he was the one who discovered the egg chamber and became the first victim to a newborn Xenomorph. There are some incredibly talented people working in TV at the moment, whether it’s Breaking Bad series creator Vince Gilligan, or Game of Thrones’ showrunners, Db Weiss and David Benioff, or Orange is the New Black boss, Jenji Kohan. When it comes to sci-fi, though, no one quite has the talent of Ronald D Moore, the man who brought Battestar Galactica back from the dead.
With the DVD launch of his Helix, Moore’s latest foray into the adventures on the small screen, we look back at five moments that back up his claim as King of Sci-Fi
Star Trek: The Next Generation – Yesterday’s Enterprise
Moore’s career began when he submitted a spec script for Star Trek: The Next Generation, which became season three episode, The Bonding.

We’ve learned that production is just now getting underway on 400 Days, a psychological sci-fi thriller that’s being led by Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Dane Cook (Dan In Real Life). Matt Osterman (Ghost From The Machine) penned the script and will also direct. Though 400 Days is a small project, early plot details definitely makes it sound like one worth keeping an eye on.
According to Deadline, 400 Days “centers on four astronauts sent on a simulated mission to a distant planet to test the psychological effects of deep space travel. Locked away for 400 days, the crew’s mental state begins to deteriorate when they lose all communication with the outside world. Forced to exit the ship, they discover that this mission may not have been a simulation after all.”

Deep space is a terrible place, devoid of life or oxygen. As we have seen in many films before, it can be quite scary - but now a few people are getting involved in turning this perception around with The Something, a comedy about astronauts lost in space. Fortunately, they're pursuing one of the hottest comedic leading ladies in the industry to lead this mission and re-brand space as a gosh-darn fun place to be. Rose Byrne is settling in to starring in The Something, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie, which sounds absolutely un-Google-able, follows a group of scientists in their adventures across the stars, likely dealing with petty interpersonal conflict and dopey scientific mishaps. Space is the new place for comedy! Or something... Disappointingly, it seems like Byrne is only playing a "love interest," described in the trade report as "an approachable beauty, though she hates being...

Late last month a group of undergraduate students were using telescopes at University College London to gaze up at the galaxy lovingly known as the ‘M82′. While doing this one of the students was looking at a textbook with a photographic plate of what M82 should look like and they quickly piped up that it wasn’t what they were seeing through the telescope.
After checking their coordinates they quickly realised that a star in the galaxy they were looking at had undergone a massive supernova; causing a new flash of light to become embedded in this disk of the galaxy.

What the students were witnessing was the bright death of a star nearly 12 million light years away. It was so bright that it briefly outshone its host galaxy. This cataclysmic explosion occurred nearly 12 million years ago and the students just happened to be watching...

I gotta agree with budding film critic Julian Assange on this one: The Fifth Estate, which purports to depict the rise of the WikiLeaks founder, played by Benedict Cumberbatch and the momentous release of documents supplied by (then) Bradley Manning, is a feeble, reactionary drama. Director Bill Condon and screenwriter Josh Singer have decided to frame this as a saga of seduction and disillusionment. Daniel Berg (Daniel Bruhl) falls under the spell of Assange, exults in WikiLeaks’ cyberomnipotence, and then realizes that his charismatic leader is psychotically indifferent to the human cost of releasing government documents. (Assange won’t redact.) To illustrate this, the filmmakers invent a pair of U.S. spy masters played by Laura Linney and Stanley Tucci, who must smuggle the doctor from Deep Space 9 across a border. It gets hairy. You don’t have to be an Assange groupie (or a paranoiac) to think Condon finally...

There comes a time when all things must come to a close, and when it happens all one can truly hope for is that this closure in some way lends the satisfaction to assuage the loss. It seems like a strange notion now, when every fictional story has to have an “epic conclusion” whether it be Batman, Lost or Harry Potter, but there used to be a time when one could wrap up a fable by essentially allowing it to continue off-camera. Rather than simply tear up the universe established by years’ worth of scribbling and shooting, that world could simply be allowed to carry on. The characters wouldn’t die, we’d just be saying goodbye. One of these shows, an iconic slice of visionary television ambition...

Yuletide ghouls continue their march toward the big screen as the Joe R. Lansdale project Christmas With the Dead gears up to shoot—but now they’ll be doing so for a different director.
The Christmas team gave word that Brian James Fitzpatrick has been replaced at the helm by Terrill Lee Lankford due to creative differences. “We’re sorry it didn’t work out with Brian, as no one respects his talents and skills more than I do, but we’re happy to have Lee on board,” says Lansdale, executive producer on the film, based on his story.
Currently running Hieronymous Pictures for author Michael Connelly—for which he recently directed Conflict of Interest, a three-part tie-in to Connelly’s novel The Scarecrow—Lankford is currently scripting a feature adaptation of the popular TV series The Equalizer with Connelly. Fright fans, however, will know him better as T.L. Lankford,...

From the creator of Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers comes the gory prehistoric mutant monster rampage Dire Wolf. Prepare to experience "One Terror B.C."
Fred Olen Ray has been making B-movies for almost as long as I've been alive. Not sure which one of us that makes feel older. Having dipped his toes is just about every genre imaginable during his four decade career, horror fans probably best know Ray as the man behind the camera for Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Scalps, Evil Toons, the criminally underrated Deep Space, and a whole lot more where that came from. Though he's spent the past few years focusing primarily on softcore sex comedies with the word "bikini" in the title, Dire Wolf marks a return to his blood-soaked B-movie bonanzas of old.
