Not even 12 hours ago we learned Kristen Stewart had nabbed a new auteur in Panos Cosmatos, a wise choice by the ever-adventurous actress. Her other choice on May 2, 2024 is quite another level of intrigue: Albert Serra, the perpetual festival favorite whose Pacifiction was something of a breakout hit, yes, if not quite to a level anyone anticipated. (Anyone but the man himself.) Per Film Stiftung, Serra’s previously announced Out of This World has secured funding, coinciding with a planned 2025 premiere.
Out of This World will likely feature an uncharacteristic level of English dialogue for Serra. As the official synopsis goes: “An American delegation travels to Russia in the midst of the Ukrainian war to try to find a solution to an economic dispute linked to sanctions. Out of This World explores the eternal rivalry between Russia and the USA.”

Over the last seven years or so, the ever more capitalized Catalan industry, much based in capital Barcelona, has driven into domestic co-production with other parts of Spain. One result: an exciting new generation of young directors and producers, often women, which have scored a Berlin Golden Bear (Carla Simon’s “Alcarràs”) and best lead performance.
The Catalan film-tv industry is now, however, in the throes of a gathering industry makeover which is showing its first fruits. One driver, as so often in Europe, is public sector funding.
In 2019, total allocated Catalan government audiovisual funding stood at €12.6 million ($13.7 million). It rose to €40.8 million ($44.5 million) in 2022 and will rise again to an estimated €50 million ($54.5 million) in 2024, if the Catalan Parliament approves the budget, says Edgar Garcia, director of the governmental culture industry unit Icec.
In response to ramped-up funding, Catalonia industry has grown vibrantly. 130 execs and talent, representing 80 companies, attend 2024’s Berlin Film Market.

Having achieved the unprecedented feat of having a film in our top 20 of last year and the same film in our top five of this year with his astounding Pacifiction, expectations are certainly high for the next feature from Albert Serra.
It’s now been announced Serra will begin production this summer on his next film Out of This World, with a 2025 premiere in store. The project will find him tackling modern international relations head-on, as the synopsis reveals: “An American delegation travels to Russia in the midst of the Ukrainian war to try to find a solution to an economic dispute linked to sanctions. Out Of This World explores the eternal rivalry between Russia and the USA.”

It's been nearly forty years, but people still remember "The A-Team." The action adventure series went on for five seasons, but stuck around in the public consciousness for much, much longer. People still remember the theme song, the cartoonish violence, the catchphrases. But although many viewers throughout the 2000s wanted a revival of the show, the TV series itself never came back.
Instead, we got a feature film in 2010 starring an updated A-Team, with the characters being veterans of the Iraq War instead of veterans of Vietnam. The film underperformed at the box office, however, and they never made a sequel. Unlike "21 Jump Street," a franchise where the later movies have now long-since overshadowed the TV show for most younger viewers, when people of all ages today think of "The A-Team," they're still almost certainly thinking of the show.
So what have the cast members been up to since...

When you tell folks you’re going to interview legendary magicians Penn & Teller, someone is liable to ask: “How are you going to do that? Does Teller even talk?”

Marc Fouchard’s Out Of This World (Hors Du Monde) is one of those films which will blow you away when you first see it, and which you will hesitate to watch ever again. It’s the story of Léo (Kévin Mischel), a shy, emotionally damaged man who seems constantly uncomfortable with the world around him. He finds relief only in composing music, and in killing, which gives him inspiration – but this is very much unlike most serial killer films. There is no glamour, no sense of power, no sexual titillation – just sadness and brokenness. When Léo meets a young deaf woman, Amélie (Aurélia Poirier), who is a dancer and listens to his music by pressing her face against the door of his taxi, he is intrigued by her, and a tentative relationship begins – but can he control his compulsions?...

It’s been nearly a decade since she last appeared on the show, but Catherine Tate hasn’t stayed away from the world of Doctor Who for good. Since 2016, she’s been reprising the role of Donna Noble opposite David Tennant in Big Finish Productions’ The Tenth Doctor Adventures audio drama series. In her next outing, however, Tate will be going at it alone, meaning Donna will be the star for once.
Big Finish has announced that a new boxset titled Donna Noble: Kidnapped! is on its way. The four stories will see the Doctor nowhere to be found with Donna left to pilot the Tardis by herself and go around saving the universe in his stead. She’ll even get her own companion in the form of Nat (Niky Wardley), who’s described as “everything Donna isn’t – a career woman, happily married, successful, and confident.”

Led by the Disney/Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” and “Trolls” (20th Century Fox/DreamWorks Animation), the Top 10 box office continues to be strong. And with three new wide releases, totals could be 20 percent over last year.
Those new films — “Arrival” (Paramount), “Almost Christmas” (Universal), and “Shut In” (EuropaCorp) — won’t top the second-week blockbusters. Even if “Doctor Strange” and “Trolls” each drop 50 percent, they’d gross $42 million and $23 million, respectively. None of the new titles are likely to cross $20 million, though “Arrival” and “Almost Christmas” could come close.
This weekend gets an added boost from Veteran’s Day on Friday, a Federal holiday that gives many school kids the day off. That will boost all grosses, but particularly “Trolls” and also the already well-received “Doctor Strange.”

Star Trek: The Original Series aired 50 years ago, Thursday. (Actually, that's a bit of a cheat: The series originally aired Sept. 6, 1966 … in Canada, so you know, it doesn't count.)
The show never achieved high ratings during its original run of three seasons, but as it went into syndication throughout the 1970s, it became the cult classic it is today, with 13 feature films and five additional television series following. In honor of its 50th anniversary, we're rounding up some facts you might not have known about the series that boldly went where no other show had gone before.

Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” was a surprise addition to this year’s Venice Film Festival, instantly provoking curiosity as to how his first directorial effort since 2006’s “Apocalypto” would be received amid so many other autumnal prestige pictures. The answer, at least so far, is pretty well — early reviews from Venice tend toward the favorable.

Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman draws attention to Gibson’s battle scenes:
“It immerses you in the violent madness of war — and, at the same time, it roots its drama in the impeccable valor of a man who, by his own grace, refuses to have anything to do with war.”
Alonso Duralde of TheWrap is similarly positive, crediting Gibson’s controlled chaos — while also pointing out a certain irony:
“Gibson has created some of the most breathtakingly exciting wartime footage in recent memory.

Seven years after premiering his directorial debut, “A Single Man,” at the Venice Film Festival, fashion designer Tom Ford returns to the festival with his second feature, “Nocturnal Animals.” And judging by the first reviews, he’s done an outstanding job the second time around. Starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, the film is based on “Tony and Susan,” a novel by Austin Wright, and follows the story of an art gallery owner who is haunted by her ex-husband’s novel, a thriller that she interprets as a revenge tale. Here’s what the critics have to say.
IndieWire’s Ben Croll gave the film an A-, writing that Ford’s ambitious second film is a “two-hander with a bite”:
“‘Nocturnal Animals’ is an impressively ambitious effort, one part mean Texas thriller, one part middle-age melodrama, and makes for a meta-textual riddle that is almost as pleasurable to reflect...

It’s as reliable as a compass: Every year, on the Thursday before Labor Day, the Telluride charter from Los Angeles to Montrose, Colo. is a core sample of hopes for the Oscar season. (The contenders on my flight included executives from Amazon, Netflix, The Orchard, Open Road, Paramount, Plan B, and Fox Searchlight, along with movie stars Rooney Mara and Isabelle Huppert.)
It’s an honor to be selected for Telluride, certainly, but everyone’s nerves are tuned for the films’ receptions. The Labor Day weekend festival has launched a number of eventual best-picture winners, including “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The King’s Speech,” “Spotlight,” “Argo,” and “12 Years a Slave.” The buzz that begins here (or doesn’t) determines strategies as the films move on to future festivals in Toronto and New York.

This lady knows how to party better than all of us. 105-year-old Ivena Smailes asked for a gaggle of hot and sexy firefighters to show up at her birthday celebration. Not only did they show up, they climbed through the freakin' window to make their entrance. Did her party turn out the way she imagined? It looks like it! Ivena told ABC News, "It was great! Out of this world." Spirit Animal. Five firefighters showed up to her senior living center, climbing a ladder to the third floor to see her. Hot. It looks like her 40 guests partook in some cake, and even enjoyed singers and dancers. Ivena, or Ivy for short, partied to her fave hits by Elvis, Al Johnson and Frank Sinatra. Honestly, this sounds...

On October 21, 2015, I woke up in my Atlantic Beach home around 7:00 Am. I got dressed, made sure my bags were packed, ate a light breakfast, and took off in my car. Today was my trip to Melbourne, Florida where I would be meeting my friend Jade, and we both would be going to Famous Faces & Funnies for a Skype Q&A with the one and only Brian K. Vaughan.
Brian K. Vaughan is the Eisner-award winning writer of The Runaways (with Adrian Alphona) for Marvel; Y: The Last Man (with Pia Guerra), Ex Machina (with Tony Harris), Pride of Baghdad (with Niko Henrichon) for DC/Vertigo; Saga (with Fiona Staples) and We Stand On Guard (with Steve Skorce) for Image. Vaughan’s creator-owned content is not only voluminous but high quality, as evidenced by critical praise and accolades. He mostly writes science fiction with healthy doses of drama and social/political commentary.

The X Factor finally kicked off its live shows this weekend, and gosh, it looks like we've got a seriously strong field of acts this year. In fact, ranking them seems faintly unfair as even those lower down the league put in some fantastic performances, but we sucked it up and did it anyway:
13. Max Stone
You could have the best voice in the world, Max, and yours is very nice. But you still did a cod reggae cover of 'Someone Like You'.
12. Bupsi
Not quite 'You're A Wonderful One' this week. More of 'You're An Okay-But-We-Preferred-Pony One'.
11. Kiera Weathers
Kiera sang 'Crying For No Reason'... let's hope the voting public won't actually give her a reason to cry.
10. Reggie N Bollie
Reggie N Bollie covered 'It Wasn't Me' but if we were them we'd be taking All the credit for this super fun performance.
9. Anton Stephans

Has everyone recovered from Bupsi? What looked like it was going to be a nothing audition turned into something very memorable indeed - splits, desk-climbing, lap-dancing... the whole shebang.
But Bupsi was far from the only memorable act tonight, so here's your episode three video round-up, with the auditions ranked from worst to best...
10. Flaxen
Still lacking fire even when they had actual fire on stage.
9. Shianne Phillips
'I Have Nothing'. Well, you have two nos.
8. Danny Charles
As Simon Cowell sighed: "Rita said you smashed it. I'd call it, 'You slightly cracked it'."
7. Steven Johnson
"You kind of remind me of Stevi Ritchie." Is that meant to be a compliment?
6. Stephanie McCourt
Once she shook off 'Shake It Off', Stephanie was actually rather good.
5. Zen Blythe
He is called Zen. Zen.
4. Jamie Benkert
Forming an 'Army of Two' with Olly Murs.
3. Bupsi
A rare example when "becoming nasty" actually means becoming better.

Previously: Review: 'Masters of Sex' Season 3, Episode 5: 'Matters of Gravity' Is Out of This World The Syllabus If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. A fitting companion to last week's chronicle of failure, "Two Scents" hangs together on the multiple meanings of "try": to attempt, to test, to challenge. In matters of kinship, sex, romance and science, tonight's episode of "Masters of Sex" recognizes that effort alone is in fact no guarantee of the desired outcome—that tricks of timing, of fortune and fate, often conspire against us—and yet the characters strive, still, to write a different ending. As the season passes the midway point, the slightly ragged "Two Scents" establishes the state of play for the remaining episodes: dissatisfaction becomes action, and the proverb attributed to British educator W.E. Hickson becomes the catalyst for change. Intermediate Entomology Stymied in...

Ok, now I’m not usually one to arrive this early at a party, but the new Jurassic World trailer has me ready to set up camp in anticipation for the next installment of Universal’s dino-mega-franchise, set to hit theaters summer, 2015.
This very cool trailer sets out to whet our appetites for a whole new excursion back to Isla Nublar and the world’s most famous prehistoric theme park, and it packs a serious punch. Reminiscent of Jurassic Park (1993), the 3 minute trailer shows us everything we’ve been hoping for…scary dinosaurs, Chris Pratt, and of course, running for your life. And listen out for a tease of the familiar and still awe-inspiring theme music.
