Television shows seem well-organized and choreographed. Yet, not everything about them always goes according to plan.
For example, an incidental character sometimes steals a scene and creates memorable television history.
Then, there are the characters who take things a step further by stealing scenes repeatedly until they become the stars themselves.
Particular characters, such as Dr. Gregory House on House, are often created to be standouts. Yet, occasionally, those main protagonists are entirely overshadowed.
In rare instances, characters who were supposed to be incidental became regulars and took over entire shows.
The Fonz on Happy Days (1974-1984)
Happy Days underwent several changes, including the recasting and eventual disappearance of Chuck Cunningham's character, but Arthur (The Fonz) Fonzarelli's addition most dramatically altered the show's trajectory.
Initially, Happy Days focused on the Cunningham family, especially teenager Richie (Ron Howard). The Fonz (Henry Winkler) was a side character. However, the motorcycle-riding, leather jacket-wearing greaser soon took over.

As fans of movies and TV, we have seen thousands of guest stars grace our screens only to disappear forever after their purpose has been served. But once in a while a performer gives life to a character that can not be contained to just one or two episodes. Once in a while a performer brings to life a character that doesn’t just perform in a show, but comes to define it. Thus is the story of Steve Urkel, the lovable nerd from next door that was only meant for a single episode but in the hands of the talented Jaleel White became one of the most iconic characters in television history. But sometimes when you craft a character so beloved, it is hard to shake them, as audiences, and casting directors, only see that character in you. Sometimes you work so hard to shake that character from audiences...

Saved by the Bell‘s Kelly Kapowski gave up on becoming a doctor when she agreed to marry Zack Morris during The College Years — a decision Tiffani Thiessen’s alter ego reevaluates during Season 2 of the Peacock revival.
Midway through Sbtb‘s sophomore run, Kelly confides in Jessie and Lisa that she’s been seeing a man — a tutor, that is, to prepare her for the McAt exam. But just a couple of episodes later, she tells Jessie that she’s having doubts. The universe clearly doesn’t want her to become a doctor — and it was fate, she says,...

When Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” reimagining drops its second season on Nov. 24, it will pay tribute to original cast member Dustin Diamond right from the premiere episode.
Diamond played Samuel “Screech” Powers beginning in “Good Morning, Miss Bliss,” the prequel to “Saved by the Bell” in 1988. He continued the character through the flagship series, short-lived “College Years” spinoff and six years of “The New Class” spinoff, making his time with the character a dozen years in total. Diamond passed away from lung cancer in February of this year. His character was referenced in the first season of the new incarnation of the show, but Diamond was not invited onto it as a guest star.

He was 44.
The sad news comes following a battle with Stage 4 lung cancer.
“We are saddened to confirm of Dustin Diamond’s passing on Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, due to carcinoma,” reads a statement from the actor's talent agency.
“He was diagnosed with this brutal, relentless form of malignant cancer only three weeks ago. In that time, it managed to spread rapidly throughout his system; the only mercy it exhibited was its sharp and swift execution."
"Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful," it concludes.
The actor was admitted to hospital in January for tests after being revealed to be in excruciating pain.
A post on his Facebook page later revealed a cancer diagnosis.
"At this time we can confirm that Dustin does have cancer," his team posted.

No, they’re not the stars of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell revival (premiering Wednesday, Nov. 25). And no, they’re most certainly not part of the original series cast. The creator of YouTube series “Zack Morris Is Trash,” Dashiell Driscoll, is a writer on Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” reboot. But don’t take the hiring as an endorsement that producers on the new streaming version agree the original Tnbc “Sbtb” lead character, played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar, is, indeed, trash.
Ahead of the “Saved by the Bell” reimagining’s Thanksgiving-timed launch, we told new showrunner Tracey Wigfield (“30 Rock”) and Franco Bario, who has been a producer on every iteration of the teen series since its “Good Morning, Miss Bliss” inception, how (not genuinely) offensive we found the title and conceit of Driscoll’s brilliant Funny or Die series.
So, like, is our charming childhood hero, whom in this version has grown up to be the governor of California, actually “trash”?
“Marginally,” Bario said.

You’re next, Screech. Ok, so we seriously doubt that, but Peacock said on Thursday Lark Voorhies will make a “special appearance” as former Bayside High fashionista Lisa Turtle on its upcoming “Saved by the Bell” reboot series.
The exciting announcement came two days after the NBCUniversal streaming service revealed the “Saved by the Bell” trailer. Watch that here.
Fans of the original “Saved by the Bell” will probably remember the salacious purported tell-all book “Behind the Bell” penned by Dustin Diamond, who played Samuel “Screech” Powers on the teen series. “Behind the Bell” was poorly received by the rest of the “Sbtb” cast — and by book critics.
Diamond has since expressed regret over “Behind the Bell.”

Peacock dropped the trailer for its “Saved by the Bell” reboot on Tuesday, and the old Bayside gang is (mostly) back together. But let’s be honest, you’re just here to see Zack (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Kelly (Tiffani Amber Thiessen).
Well, now you can get your first glimpse of Bayside’s first couple: Watch the wink-heavy trailer via the video above.
All of your favorite gags are in there, and Max looks like he hasn’t aged a day. Or, you know, grown-up at all.
Plus, we get an updated “Friends Forever” remix out of a Zack Attack reunion, a timeout from not Zack, and Slater (Mario Lopez) takes his shirt off.
In the new series, when California governor Zack Morris (Gosselaar) gets into hot water for closing too many underfunded high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the most well-funded schools in the state — including the affluent Bayside High.

After more than three decades and dozens of other characters under his belt, Mark-Paul Gosselaar is revisiting the one that first made him a household name: Zack Morris on “Saved by the Bell.”
The veteran actor is not only going to guest star in the Peacock continuation series of the classic NBC Saturday morning live-action kids’ show, but he also teamed up with Dashiell Driscoll, the mind behind the viral sensation “Zack Morris is Trash” (and a writer on the upcoming Peacock series) for the “Zack to the Future” podcast. Saved by the Bell may be returning, but one notable cast member has been left out of the new series.
Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle on the original series, is opening up about her thoughts on the revival.
“I have to admit I did feel a bit slighted and hurt when I was not invited to be part of the Saved by the Bell reunion as well as other cast members events, yet of course, I also realized that having this puzzling disorder may have played a major part in that factual decision,” Voorhies tells Dr. Oz in a clip of the Wednesday, February 19, episode of The Dr. Oz Show.
“With that in mind, I am truly thankful for having had the chance to work on a show that has been so successful.”
The actress went on to say that she felt multiple emotions when she sees photos of her former costars together.

Real comedy still happens on late night, we can prove it. If you like Conan comedy gold, Fallon friendliness, cutesy Corden, list-making Letterman, kneedy Kimmel, and all the rest, I hope you’ll enjoy this column too.
Last night on late night, Bill Murray hopped out of a cake on Letterman, Kimmel tried to seduce George Clooney, Jamie Foxx did great impressions, James Corden worked in a deli, and loads more!
Late Show with David Letterman
Bill Murray’s Late Show highlights. Bill tries to lead the crowd in a cheer to convince Dave to stay.
Bill’s goodbye isn’t as touching as Norm’s, Martin Short’s, or many others, but it was distinctly Murray. Murray hops out of a cake and feeds it to someone — Dave’s wife?
Bob Dylan performs “The Night We Called It a Day”.
Rupert Jee, often a surrogate for Dave’s mischief,...

The Sucker Punch soundtrack. Describing his new project Sucker Punch as Alice In Wonderland with Machine Guns might have been a good way of securing funding, and might attract chuckling late-teen boys to the theatres, but graphic-fancying CGI automaton Zack Snyder might just as equally have suggested Terminator 2 with cartoon owls, or Citizen Kane with the Ed 209, such is the wisdom of melding a beautifully functioning classic with a completely incongruous element. If only he’d come up with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, then at least he’d have a best-selling book on his hands. Just as well that Snyder’s snappy-cum-brainless one-liner stands empirically for nothing, the similarities of Sucker Punch with Lewis Carroll’s classic limited to a female protagonist entering a sort of fantasy world, and the dissimilarities being giant robots, CGI everything, massive explosions, every female character looking like an auditioning Playboy bunny, and everything...
