As far as I’m concerned, director Jim Wynorski’s 1986 film Chopping Mall (watch it Here) ranks up there as one of the most entertaining horror movies of the ’80s, which is the decade that brought a lot of my favorite horror movies into the world. It’s also a movie that doesn’t seem to get referenced often enough, and doesn’t get as much respect as it deserves – even if James Wan wants to remake it and Shout Factory TV aired it for 24 hours straight on Black Friday. So I’m glad to see that Chopping Mall is getting some love from the folks at Encyclopocalypse Publications, who have announced that they’re teaming up with Shout Factory and author Brian G. Berry for a Chopping Mall novelization!
Written by Wynorski and Steve Mitchell, Chopping Mall has the following synopsis: Some people will kill for a bargain… and...

An ex-Nickelodeon writer and former assistant to Dan Schneider is adding to the toxic workplace claims that are being leveled against the man once dubbed “the Willy Wonka of television” by sharing that he was her “psychological tormentor” and allegedly caused her to have significant health issues.
Amy Berg, who wrote for Nick hits Kenan & Kel and All That, tweeted a brief account on Monday of her experience working for Schneider. Her post comes after the first half of the docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV debuted on Investigation Discovery and Max Sunday night, presenting tales of abuse, sexism, racism and accusations of inappropriate behavior towards underage actors who worked on Schneider’s Nickelodeon series.
In her post, Berg placed the blame for her heart arrhythmia on the star producer behind hits like The Amanda Show, Drake & Josh, Zoey 101 and iCarly, and...

In the first two episodes of Investigation Discovery’s documentary series into the alleged sexual abuse, racism and sexism that took place on several Nickelodeon series during early ’90s and 2000s, child stars accused network producers and crew members of child sexualization and fat-shaming, and female writers say they were forced to split their salaries and act out sexually suggestive scenes in the writers room.
“This series investigates the abuses experienced by children from the adults they were expected to trust. Viewer discretion is advised,” is the warning that pops up at the beginning of each episode of “Quiet on Set,” cautioning viewers ahead of the horrific allegations.
The series started off with a peek into Nickelodeon executive Dan Schneider’s life going from an awkward Memphis teen (who was reported to have attended his father’s alma mater Harvard University though he never actually went) to landing a role on “Head of the Class,...

Early last month, a trailer for a bombshell docuseries was released that recounts the shocking behind-the-scenes behavior of Dan Schneider while he ran multiple shows at the Nickelodeon network. Schneider was a former TV star from the show Head of the Class, but he became a producing machine as he cranked out sitcoms for a younger audience on the cable channel. He was responsible for shows like All That, Kenan & Kel, Drake & Josh, iCarly, Zoey 101 and more. The docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV is set to premiere across two nights on Investigation Discovery on March 17 and March 18.
At the end of the trailer, there was an ominous tease of an empty chair and an interviewer off-camera asking, “Have you ever told your story publicly before?” It has now been revealed that Drake Bell of The Amanda Show and Drake & Josh will be...

Those of us who grew up watching Nickelodeon’s 90s slate of shows are about to be shocked to know how bad things actually were behind the scenes. When the kids’ network added more than cartoons and children’s entertainers/game shows to their schedule, it seemed like the channel was really reaching its audience by having shows for kids and featuring kids. It would make the network much hipper, and the man behind it all was Dan Schneider. Formerly a teen actor on the 80s sitcom Head of the Class, Schneider struck it big when he produced the sketch show, All That, which was in the vein of Saturday Night Live but with younger comedian performers.

While it didn’t set the box office on fire when it came out this spring, Paramount hasn’t totally given up on a Dungeons & Dragons sequel. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves fell short of $100 million at the North American box office, only grossing $93 million, with an additional $115 million overseas, putting its total at over $200 million internationally. While those are mediocre numbers, Paramount studios boss Brian Robbins told THR that while it’ll lose money, they could still do a sequel. “We’ve got to figure out a way to make it for less,” said Robbins in an expansive interview that touches on some of the hurdles the studio has faced setting up tentpole movies in the post-covid era. While Top Gun: Maverick was a mega-hit, Babylon was a colossal flop. This summer’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has been overshadowed by the dual Barbenheimer threat,...

Something was amiss with Michelangelo’s waistline.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the team behind the high school comedy “Superbad,” had sold Brian Robbins, the CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, on the idea of adding some adolescent anarchy into their animated reboot of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” But there was a problem with the initial designs for the film’s four reptile heroes: Instead of looking like muscular teens, these Turtles were scrawny and malnourished, barely strong enough to wield nunchucks or hurl a throwing star. “They looked like they were on Ozempic,” Robbins jokes.
In his peripatetic career, the 59-year-old Robbins has been on every end of these kind of creative discussions, working as an actor, writer, director, producer, digital entrepreneur and now, studio chief. And that separates him from other movie moguls, who arrive at the C-suite from Mba programs and years spent in the corporate trenches.

Dan Schneider is responsible for some of Nickelodeon's most popular shows. After starting his career in supporting onscreen roles in "Better Off Dead" and "Head of the Class," he began writing and producing the sketch comedy show "All That" in 1993 and eventually left to run "The Amanda Show" starring Amanda Bynes. He went on to launch "Drake & Josh" in 2004, followed by "Zoey 101," "iCarly," "Victorious," "Sam & Cat," "Henry Danger," and "Game Shakers," among others.
But in March 2018, his massively successful tenure at the network ended suddenly. A joint statement from Nickelodeon and Schneider read, "Following many conversations together about next directions and future opportunities, Nickelodeon and our longtime creative partner Dan Schneider/Schneider's Bakery have agreed to not extend the current deal," per The New York Times. "Since several Schneider's Bakery projects are wrapping up, both sides agreed that this is a natural time for Nickelodeon and...

“Insecure” is now officially available to stream on Netflix, the first HBO original to launch on the streamer under a new licensing deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.
It was first reported on June 20 that Wbd was in talks to license some of their original shows to Netflix. In addition, the streamer has confirmed that “Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific,” “Six Feet Under,” and “Ballers” will be coming to the service at a later date. “True Blood,” which also currently streams on Hulu, will be available to Netflix subscribers outside the U.S. All of the shows remain available to stream on Max (formerly HBO Max) as well.
The deal marks the latest shift in content strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery under the David Zaslav regime. In January, Warner Bros. Discovery made licensing moves by partnering with Roku and Tubi to launch free, ad-supported channels with HBO shows. The Fast channels...

It’s been nearly a year since Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced a free ad-supported streamer was in the works. Now, if you check out the live TV section of Tubi, you’ll find 14 channels all branded with the same title: WBtv. It’s a safe bet that will be the name of the standalone service when it launches. Bloomberg previously reported that would be the name. The branding of the Tubi channels seems to cinch that.
Each channel features a new logo — the WBtv logo — mixed with a unique typeface for each subchannel beneath it. If media companies are creating throwaway channels for Fast services, they normally don’t go to the trouble of using a graphic designer.
Also, when a free streamer leans into this kind of branding, it usually reflects the proper name of the streamer involved. On Pluto TV, you’ll find channels like Pluto TV Spotlight,...

In a turnaround for the streaming wars, Warner Bros. Discovery is in negotiations to license a package of library HBO titles to Netflix.
If a deal were to go through, it would cement the sea-change in content distribution strategy afoot at Warner Bros. Discovery under the David Zaslav regime. HBO has licensed library content in the past — a deal with Netflix would not be groundbreaking per se, but it is notable in the era of pitched competition among the largest media companies to build direct-to-consumer streaming platforms. Netflix, the upstart outsider from Los Gatos, has been the pace car for television’s transition over the past decade.
Among the titles under discussion are the Issa Rae comedy “Insecure.” The show premiered on HBO in 2016 and ran for five seasons until 2021. The deal is believed to be non-exclusive to Netflix, meaning that the titles would still be available on Max, Warner Bros.

The career of one Ke Huy Quan may just be one of Hollywood's most stirring comeback stories. After gaining recognition as a child actor in "The Goonies" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," Quan struggled to find further roles as he grew older and eventually all but disappeared from movies as a performer. That is until he made his incredibly lauded return in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," kicking off the let the Ke Huy Quan-Naissance and winning him an Academy Award -- not to mention the hearts of all rooting for his much-deserved success. 2022 should be remembered in the annals of history as the year of Ke Huy Quan. While the actor got his start in Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and the Spielberg produced "The Goonies" directed by Richard Donner, Quan was never given the opportunity to transition from the world of child acting to a successful career in his adulthood. He had appearances in films like "Encino Man" with Brendan Fraser and on the show "Head of the Class," but just as quickly as he appeared, Quan disappeared from the public spotlight.
It's important to acknowledge that Quan's leave of absence from the cinematic system was not his choice, because, despite his incredibly impressive resume as a child, the Vietnamese-born Chinese-American actor was not offered opportunities where he could thrive. One might think that the only path to winning an Oscar is to do good enough work to be respected and appreciated by your academy member peers – or just have the right friends in the academy’s actors branch, huh? But there’s something that’s almost as important in getting through the months and months of awards campaigning, and that’s a narrative.
Narratives are something that are often mentioned as we get closer to Oscar night, but it’s something that runs throughout the life of a movie from whenever or wherever it debuts through whatever junkets or interviews are done over the course of a movie’s life on the way to Oscar night.
For instance, how many times had we heard the story of “The King’s Speech” screenwriter David Seidler on the way to that movie’s four Oscar wins, including for Best Picture? Born in...

If you're upset that shows like "Westworld," "The Nevers," "FBoy Island," and more have been pulled from HBO Max in the aftermath of the Warner Bros.-Discovery merger, there's good news. Tubi and Roku have both reached deals with Warner Bros. Discovery to bring that content to their streaming platforms. The two streamers announced their deals in separate statements. The titles will be available as Fast content - free ad-supported linear streaming TV.

Warner Bros Discovery has finally nailed down plans to go the Fast route. Last year — in between an intense bout of cancellations and titles being pulled from their streaming home on HBO Max — the company announced plans to explore a free ad-supported television option (Fast). During the company's third-quarter earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav made a point of saying that there's "a huge amount of content that's not even on [HBO Max/Discovery+] that's sitting with us that hasn't been put to monetize in the marketplace." In the spirit of cashing in, a new plan has been enacted. Over the next few months, 14 Warner Bros. branded Fast channels will arrive on Roku and Tubi.

Discovery recently announced that they would be licensing bundles of their shows to “third-party free, ad-supported streaming services”… and now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the details of a couple of those licensing deals. While Warner Bros. Discovery has been making the news a lot in recent months as they remove titles from their own HBO Max streaming service, content from the company is now set to reach both Tubi and Roku.
The Hollywood Reporter explains, “Tubi will add more than 225 free channels from Wbd and 14 WB-branded Fast channels, including the launch of three brand-specific channels, WB TV Reality, WB TV Series and WB TV Family, to feature some of Wbd’s popular content, including all seasons of Westworld, Raised by Wolves, Legendary, FBoy Island, The Nevers, Finding Magic Mike, Head of the Class and The Time Traveler’s Wife.” Warner Bros. Discovery titles will start showing up on Tubi in February.

When HBO and HBO Max canceled many of their shows and removed them from their streaming libraries, there were questions about whether they would see the light of day again.
Canceling projects is one thing, but making them unavailable to watch for the faithful fans who followed them isn't a good look.
According to Variety, deals have been closed to bring 2,000 hours of on-demand Warner Bros. Discovery movies and TV series to Roku Channel and Tubi.
Warner Bros. Discovery had hinted that these scrapped projects could materialize on third-party Fast channels.
Westworld, The Nevers, Raised by Wolves, FBoy Island, Legendary, Finding Magic Mike, Head of the Class, and The Time Traveler's Wife were among the shows purged from HBO Max.
The Nevers hadn't even finished its freshman season, with the second half having never been aired on HBO or HBO Max.

Roku and Tubi will be the free streaming homes for Westworld, Raised by Wolves, The Nevers and other Warner Bros. Discovery content that was recently removed from HBO Max, as part of a co-exclusive deal that includes “hundreds” of TV series and movies from the Wbd portfolio.
As reported in December, Wbd’s plan was to shop the series it had removed from its own subscription streaming service (as part of an expansive and seismic cost-cutting move) and shop them to Fast (free, ad-supported streaming TV) services.

Indiana Jones isn't the only one who's back for another adventure in front of mainstream audiences. Ke Huy Quan used to be known for playing Indy's brave sidekick Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and for his role as the bumbling young inventor Data in Richard Donner's underground adventure "The Goonies." This week, that all changed when Quan won the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Waymond Wang in "Everything Everywhere All at Once." It was the first time since 1984 (the same year that "Temple of Doom" was released) that an actor of Asian descent won the category. That year, actor Haing S. Ngor was awarded the trophy for his work in "The Killing Fields." Quan's all-encompassing performance in "Everything Everywhere All at Once" ("Eeaao" for short) has redefined and reinvigorated the former child actor's entire career, giving him carte...

Ke Huy Quan Landed His Everything Everywhere All At Once Role With An Assist From One Of The Goonies
In a 2015 interview with the Daily Mail, actor Jeff Cohen recalled the disheartening experience of growing up in Hollywood. Jeff Cohen might be best known for playing the role of Lawrence "Chunk" Cohen in Richard Donner's 1985 adventure film "The Goonies," a nostalgic mainstay for kids of a certain generation. In the interview, Cohen talks about how being typecast as a "funny fat kid" left his choice of roles limited, and that he was constantly competing for the same parts with only a few other notable actors. He ended up retiring from acting at a young age, and eventually went into entertainment law. Donner helped Cohen pay for law school. These days, he runs the Cohen Garner Law Group, and wrote the book "The Dealmaker's Ten Commandments: Ten Essential Tools for Business Forged in the Trenches of Hollywood." He specialized in helping actors and Hollywood players negotiate deals.

HBO Max may (hopefully) be done randomly pulling original series from the service, but there are still a number of TV shows and films due to leave HBO Max in January as part of the regularly scheduled shuffling.
Multiple seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” will leave HBO Max on Jan. 3, so get those final binge-watches in Asap. And the beloved WB series “Everwood” is due to depart on Jan. 21 if you feel like seeing what young Chris Pratt was up to in the early 2000s.
In terms of movies leaving HBO Max, there are quite a lot. “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” turns into a ghost on Jan. 20, while Jon M. Chu’s delightful musical “In the Heights” leaves on Jan. 27.
Noteworthy films leaving HBO Max on Jan. 31 include the first three “John Wick” movies, the first three “Jurassic Park” films, the first two installments in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise,...

Westworld, Raised by Wolves, Nevers and Others to Be Shopped to Free Streamers After HBO Max Removal
Several of the series that are being unceremoniously removed from HBO Max are likely to wind up on free, ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) services such as Pluto TV, Tubi and Peacock.
In the wake of a slew of concerning reports this week, Warner Bros. Discovery has affirmed that it decided to license certain HBO and HBO Max original programming to third party Fast services, since the company has yet to build one of its own. The move is expected to “drive new, expanded audiences for these series,” Wbd said in a press release.

There has been quite a bit of confusion over what is going to happen to recently-canceled HBO and HBO Max fare after they leave the platform. After all, isn't the benefit of streaming services like HBO Max that everything from a particular studio or channel will be available to watch whenever you want? Turns out the answer is "not really" -- especially when you're a company going through a multi-billion dollar restructuring like Warner Bros. Discovery.
However, for those wondering where original programming like "Westworld" and "The Nevers" will go with their impending deletions off HBO Max, an answer has been formally announced -- sort of. In a new press release, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that several HBO and HBO Max cancelations will be shopped around to Fast (Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV) services. Viewers will likely recognize some of the names confirmed to be making the leap to these platforms:...

I’d imagine that a few people out there are rethinking their HBO Max subscription. Warner Bros. Discovery has been aggressively removing titles from the HBO Max streaming service in the last few weeks. The latest casualty includes Raised by Wolves, Ridley Scott’s ambiguous sci-fi series that was cancelled by HBO Max earlier this year after two seasons.
In addition to Raised by Wolves, other titles being removed from HBO Max include The Time Traveler’s Wife and Head of the Class, as well as reality shows FBoy Island, Legendary, and Finding Magic Mike. It was revealed several days ago that Westworld and The Nevers would also be removed from HBO Max. This seems to be yet another cost-cutting measure from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Once these shows are taken off the streaming platform, they’ll be put together in a package that will be licensed to Fast (free ad-supported television) channels.

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced a plan to license some of its canceled and pulled programming to third party free ad-supported television (Fast) channels. Additionally, the company says it will announce plans for its own proprietary Fast channel in 2023.
Wbd shocked the industry on Monday when it was learned that all four seasons of “Westworld” would be pulled from HBO Max after being canceled earlier this year. This wasn’t the first move of its kind — the company infamously canceled its “Batgirl” movie this summer as it was nearing completion and has pulled several lower-profile items from its back catalog. And more recently, HBO Max axed several buzzy unscripted originals. But given that “Westworld” was once a major hit and a hallmark series for the HBO brand, the news seemed to signal that no content was safe in the face of CEO David Zaslav’s extreme cost-cutting strategy.

Warner Bros. Discovery updated its estimate on restructuring charges related to Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia, and said content impairment and development write-off charges could be up to 3.5 billion — 1 billion more than it previously pegged.
The media company made the disclosure in an SEC filing Wednesday. Wbd said it “revised certain estimates related to its restructuring and transformation initiatives” that it previously disclosed in October. The company said it now expects to incur total pre-tax restructuring charges of 4.1 billion – 5.3 billion, up from 3.2 billion to 4.3 billion previously.
The new estimate includes 2.8 billion – 3.5 billion of content impairment and development write-offs. Warner Bros. Discovery said it is not revising the previously disclosed estimates for organization restructuring costs, facility consolidation activities and other contract-termination costs or cash expenditures. That said, the company noted that “restructuring efforts are ongoing and could result in additional impairments above the revised estimates.” Warner Bros. Discovery said its restructuring...

I never worked on a TV show where a male writer declared it “rape day” or groped me or watched porn in the writers room, some of the actions attributed to Eric Weinberg. This was, as one female writer was quoted, “The worst of the worst.” This is the big stuff.
But in my nearly 20 years as a sitcom writer, I experienced plenty of medium to small stuff. Everything from a showrunner’s hanging women’s underpants on his lamp, to being told women aren’t funny, to being asked if my contribution to a script was making the coffee, to innumerable jokes about my breasts. Each time I’d laugh and blow it off. Yes, it wore me down. But I wanted to work. And it had happened on every show.
Except one. On that show, nothing like that happened. Ever.

Hey, "The Amazing Race" fans. Tonight, October 5, 2022, another new episode of The Amazing Race's current season 34 made its way to the air, and it featured a little something different called, the Mega Leg. In it, the teams had to complete two detours and two Road Block challenges. They also had to travel to two cities. Tonight's episode kicked off with the teams learning they had to charter a flight to Bologna, Italy and drive themselves to Arco del Meloncello to get their first clues for this leg of the race. Once they got there, they ran into their first detours, which were “Head of the Class” or “The Big Cheese.” Glenda and Lumumba got lost trying to find the detours. Rich and Dom had trouble with directions as well. Rich also had problems driving the manual transmission car.

Ford, who was in a surprisingly emotional mood while promoting his final appearance as Indiana Jones in the upcoming, so-far untitled sequel, told D23 attendees (including our own Alex Maidy) that this was indeed his last time donning the fedora. “This is it. I will not fall down for you again,” he said, choking up as the audience saw the first teaser trailer (see Alex’s breakdown of the unreleased trailer at the bottom of this post).

Harrison Ford experienced a blast from his “Indiana Jones” past during this weekend’s Disney D23 Expo.
Ford, 80, made a surprise appearance at the event to discuss the long-awaited “Raiders of the Last Ark” sequel, and wound up reuniting with Ke Huy Quan, who was just 12 when he played Indy’s sidekick Short Round in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”.
Quan, now 51, took to Instagram to share a photo of the former co-stars embracing.

From one multiverse to another, Ke Huy Quan is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The news comes via D23 Expo today, where Quan's casting in "Loki" season 2 was revealed as he joined the rest of the show's cast, including Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, and Owen Wilson, on stage at the event.
The actor who played Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" didn't appear at the panel for the latest (and maybe last?) "Indiana Jones" film, which wrapped up shortly before Marvel took the stage. Instead, he made his entrance during the "Loki" portion of the event, reportedly joking that he ended up at the wrong panel. But his presence there was no accident, and his addition to the "Loki" cast is extremely exciting given the actor and stunt choreographer's complex history with Hollywood.

HBO Max has canceled its comedy Gordita Chronicles, a move the streamer says is motivated by a change in strategy at its parent company.
The show, which centers on a 12-year-old Dominican girl (Oliva Goncalves) in 1980s Miami, debuted its full first — and now only — season on June 23. An HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement that the show fell victim to a change in priorities for the streamer.
“Live-action kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future, and as a result, we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to end Gordita Chronicles at HBO Max,” the statement reads. “The series earned critical acclaim and a loyal following, and we are proud to have worked with creator Claudia Forestieri and our two powerhouse executive producers, Eva Longoria (who also masterfully directed the pilot) and Zoe Saldaña,...
