An innovative and relentless slasher that follows the gory story from the killer's point of view, In a Violent Nature is now playing in theaters via IFC Films and Shudder. To celebrate the film's release, Daily Dead caught up with writer/director Chris Nash to discuss his unique feature-length directorial debut, including the ambitious logistics of following the film's killer through the woods, the cut footage that would give the movie even more of a horror hangout vibe, his plans to tell more stories in the world of In a Violent Nature, and he also shared his affection for Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (one of my personal favorites from the Friday the 13th franchise)!
You can watch my full video interview with Chris Nash below, and in case you missed it, be sure to read to read Matt Donato's Sundance review of In a Violent Nature!

Between its striking title, lurid artwork, and the timing of its release — 1981 bore the likes of Halloween II, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, The Funhouse, The Prowler, and Happy Birthday to Me — one might mistake Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (also known as Night Warning) for a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. While it vaguely fits in the slice-and-dice mold, the film is anything but generic.
The prologue — which may have inspired Final Destination 2‘s unforgettable opening sequence — was directed by Michael Miller with cinematography by Jan de Bont, but Miller was let go by the production after falling behind schedule. He was replaced by TV veteran William Asher, who shot the remainder of the film with Robbie Greenberg as director of photography.
14 years after his parents were killed in an over-the-top car crash, Billy Lynch witnesses his infantilizing aunt-turned-guardian, Cheryl Roberts, kill a repair man in cold blood.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Just as the "Halloween" movies all take place in the fall, the "Friday the 13th" movies are summer films.
For the most part, all 12 extant "Friday" movies take place around Camp Crystal Lake, an overnight camp in the woods of New Jersey. Jason Voorhees, the campfire story goes, was left to drown in Crystal Lake as a boy when the counselors tasked with watching him were distracted by their libidos. He's now back to revenge-kill all horny teens. Once the summer is over, however, the campfire story ends.
However, Friday the 13th -- that is, the famously unlucky calendar date -- doesn't always fall in the summer. 2021 had a Friday the 13th in August, but the next one wouldn't arrive until May of 2022. 2023 was strange in that it had a Friday the 13th in both January and in October.

Have you ever found yourself on a dark and stormy night, debating the merits of Jason Voorhees’ machete mastery over a campfire? Every horror fan has their Friday the 13th favorites, and well, so do we. So we’ve ranked ’em!
Born from the golden age of slashers, the Friday the 13th franchise has given us over three decades of summer camp scares, vengeful Voorhees vendettas, and, let’s face it, some questionable fashion choices. It’s a franchise that’s seen Jason go from a mere campfire legend to an unstoppable force of nature, taking on everyone from telekinetic teens to, well, space marines. And while some entries might have you saying, “They camped it up too much,” others will have you locking your doors and avoiding lakes for the foreseeable future.
But before we dive into the murky waters of Crystal Lake, let’s get one thing straight:...

Halloween approaches and with it the desire to revisit some of your favorite horror movie franchise, in order, from start to finish. What better franchise to binge than “Friday the 13th,” the celebrated slasher film series that started with Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 original before spawning sequels that would introduce iconic killer Jason Voorhees before sending him to Manhattan, outer space and back in time (Ok we made that last one up).
Ostensibly the cornerstone of the 1980s slasher film craze, “Friday the 13th” is one of the more inventive franchises, particularly when the concept was given a little more elasticity. For more than a decade, though, the franchise has been fully dormant – the last movie was 2009’s Michael Bay-produced reboot/remake “Friday the 13th.” A24 did recently announce a “Crystal Lake” series to be overseen by “Hannibal”/”Pushing Daisies” mastermind Bryan Fuller, so at least we have that to look forward to!

Not even severe thunderstorm alerts could stop the rabid fans, who traveled not just from all over North America but as far as Finland, Scotland, and England to attend. Ticket sales reportedly doubled from the previous year’s already-commendable showing,...

Numbers have begun rolling in for this mid-summer weekend and as expected Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is looking to drop the 60% we predicted on Thursday. If that number holds it would be about a 5% steeper decline than 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which may not sound like much until you consider that Skull opened with over $100 million (or $126.9 million when you account for its 4-day Memorial Day gross.) So when Crystal Skull dropped to number 2 in its second week to the ladies of Sex and the City, it was still able to manage over $44 million, Dial of Destiny will be lucky to see $28 million in its second week.
If there is a glimmer of hope for Indy to maintain its pole position it is that horror films tend to be very front loaded and because of that, Insidious: The Red Door may win the Friday box...

Carol Locatell, who had a memorable turn as the foulmouthed mother Ethel Hubbard in Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning and worked alongside Burt Reynolds in three films, has died. She was 82.
Locatell died April 11 at her home in Sherman Oaks after a long battle with cancer, her husband, songwriter and record producer Gregory Prestopino, told The Hollywood Reporter. They were together for 50 years.
Locatell moved from Los Angeles to New York in the mid-1980s to shake up her career, and from her first audition there she landed a part on Broadway in Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound, which premiered in 1986. She then appeared in The Shadow Box in 1994 and in The Rose Tattoo a year later.

Carol Locatell was born on December 13, 1940 – a date that happens to have been a Friday the 13th. So it seems very fitting that when she embarked on an acting career, her role in the 1985 slasher Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (watch it Here) would turn out to become the role she was best known for. Locatell delivered a hilarious performance in that film, making the foul-mouthed Ethel Hubbard someone fans have been having fun watching for nearly forty years now. Sadly, Locatell is no longer with us. She passed away recently at the age of 82. Ron Sloan, who played Ethel’s dimwitted son Junior in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, broke the news of her passing on social media last night.
Sloan wrote,
Dearest friends, fans, and Horror family,
With great sadness, it breaks my heart to announce that my Friday the 13th Part 5 Mom, (Ethel Hubbard) Carol Locatell has passed away.

Known to horror fans for her role in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Bloody Disgusting has learned the sad news this week that Carol Locatell has passed away at the age of 82.
Alongside Ron Sloan’s character Junior, Carol Locatell played Ethel (aka Ma) in the Friday the 13th franchise’s fifth installment back in 1985, delivering a scene-stealing performance that helped make her a fan favorite star on the horror convention circuit in recent years.
Sean Clark writes on Instagram, “Just got a call from Ron Sloan letting me know that our friend Carol Locatell who most of the fans know as Ethel aka Ma in Friday the 13th Part 5 A New Beginning has lost her battle with cancer. My heart goes out to her husband Greg and their entire family.
Clark’s tribute continues, “I had the great fortune of working with her for 15+ years and she was an amazing person.

When you think slashers, your mind immediately goes to the Final Girl. While the term wasn't coined until 1992, it was a prevalent trope throughout the '70s and '80s, namely through such works as "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (Sally Hardesty), "Black Christmas" (Jess Bradford), and "Halloween" (Laurie Strode). These trendsetting heroines cemented the idea that women could be the heroes of their own stories. In many cases, the Final Girl just happened to be the last woman standing through sheer luck; in others, they slashed their way to triumph all on their own. One of the franchises most known for its many Final Girls is "Friday the 13th," which dominated the 1980s and showcased some of the slasher genre's most iconic protagonists.
Throughout its run 一 from the 1980 original to the 2009 remake 一 the series' Final Girls have run the gamut. Some are tough-as-nails warriors from the get-go,...

Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise). If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.

The Friday the 13th franchise is very important to me, so it always hits me hard when I hear that someone involved with the series has passed away… and last Friday night, the news broke that we have lost another Friday the 13th alumnus. Someone who played the hockey masked icon Jason Voorhees himself: stuntman Ted White. White had already been working in the entertainment industry as an actor and stuntman for thirty-five years by the time he was offered the chance to play Jason in 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (watch it Here). It’s not a job he was thrilled to do, he didn’t even want to be credited on the movie, but he accepted it because the pay was good. As years went by, White eventually realized that he had been involved in something special and started connecting with fans at conventions.

When it comes to rebooting classic films of yesteryear, count Corey Feldman out, especially when it involves movies he originally starred in.
The 51-year-old actor famously starred in a string of well-known movies as a youth in the 1980s, including Gremlins, Stand By Me, The Lost Boys, and The Goonies.
All those films were successful with moviegoers at the box office and still enjoy classic cult status.
Several of those movies are getting rebooted, which has become the recent formula within Hollywood to generate more box office revenue by reintroducing classic film concepts to new audiences.

Every film franchise has its odd one out. You know, the one that makes a lot of fans wince or see red at the mere mention of it. For the Friday the 13th series, it’s probably Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. For the Candyman series, it’s very likely to be Candyman 3: Day of the Dead. And for the Halloween series, it’s most definitely Halloween: Resurrection.
I’ve seen countless Halloween fans often rank the 2002 slasher as the worst of the series, and this contempt certainly shows in its Internet Movie Database user rating. Today, it holds a 4.0 out of 10, the lowest of the entire series. Even Halloween co-creator John Carpenter, who avoided watching many of the sequels he wasn’t involved in, took the time to throw shade on the film.
“I watched the one in that house, with all the cameras,” Carpenter told TooFab in 2018. “Oh my god.

One of the horror movies I’m most looking forward to for the remainder of 2021 is 13 Fanboy, co-written and directed by Deborah Voorhees, one of the stars of my beloved Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning. The film, about an obsessed Friday the 13th fan who takes his love of the series too far, now has a trailer. Check it out!
"An obsessed fan stalks his favorite actors from the Friday the 13th films and beyond. As a child, Kelsie Voorhees witnesses the murder of her grandmother, Friday the 13th actress Deborah Voorhees, at the hands of a crazed fanboy. As an adult, she discovers her grandmother isn’t the only victim and the killer is still out there searching for his favorite Friday the 13th cast members and iconic scream queens to slaughter, mirroring his idol Jason Voorhees, as he still can't seem to separate the...

Happy 2021, everyone! It’s been a few weeks, but we’re back with a brand-new edition of our weekly Blu-ray and DVD releases column to kick off this new year. And while we may not have a ton of titles headed home on Tuesday, we do have an excellent bunch of films all the same, including one of my favorite films of 2020, Love and Monsters, which hits various formats this week. Another film from last year that I really enjoyed was Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift, which hits both Blu-ray and DVD (and will be available On Demand) tomorrow, and if you have somehow never seen it, I highly recommend picking up the new Blu for Savage Streets, featuring Linda Blair.
Other releases for January 5th include Tintorera… Tiger Shark, From the Depths, Nina of the Woods, and Hacksaw.

Hey there, campers. Are you ready for another scintillating installment of our horror franchise power rankings, this time for the blood-curdling series that cannot be killed by conventional means, Friday The 13th? Please note: if you haven’t watched these movies but intend to one day do so, you’d be advised to read no further than these introductory paragraphs.
Obviously, this is not the first Friday The 13th movie ranking list. Or the second. Or the third. Or the fourth. Or the fifth. But it is, as of this writing, the newest.
What makes Friday The 13th, a critically-reviled saga that turned 40 this year, unique among the all-time stalwart slasher franchises is the fact that its formula (and its signature killer) is constantly evolving and wholly permeable to suit whatever type of story its tellers want to create.
The first film was designed as a one-off Halloween (1978) and Psycho (1960) rip-off,...

Jason Voorhees, the Friday The 13th masked mass murderer who has terrorized horny teenagers at camp sites for generations, has had many faces. This is both a credit to the various makeup artists designing Jason’s gruesome face and the performers wearing those makeups beneath that iconic hockey mask. This Friday the 13th holiday, we rank the latter. The top Jason will be pretty obvious to most Friday fiends… but how does the rest of this list shake out?
We should note that the Friday The 13th franchise also sports three major non-Jason serial killer characters, in the original Friday The 13th, Friday The 13th Part V: A New Beginning (although Jason does make a tiny cameo in both of these films), and of course Freddy Vs. Jason. These rankings will comprise the actual Jasons only.
Child Jasons will be mentioned along with their adult counterparts’ individual entries, except in...

AMC’s FearFest block of programming is an annual highlight, and this year is offering up 92 films for your spine-chilling pleasure. The horror genre may continue to be one of Hollywood’s most profitable enterprises, with the majority of low-budget efforts tending to do decent business at the box office based on folks’ continued love of being scared out of their seats, but despite how many franchises have popped up in recent years, with the exception of Saw‘s Jigsaw and It‘s Pennywise, we haven’t seen many iconic characters that can hold a candle to the famous faces that dominated the 1980s.
No matter how many horror sequels are churned out on an annual basis, when it comes to naming the most recognizable villains that the genre has ever seen, veterans like Leatherface, Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Pinhead and Freddy Kreuger are always the first ones that come to mind. Of course, every single one of them has fallen victim to the law of diminishing returns over the years,...

Tonight, Joe Bob Briggs returns for the Season 2 premiere of The Last Drive-In on Shudder. With so many horror fans staying inside these days, this is the perfect time for the return of the series, and Joe Bob talks special guests, world premieres, and more in our recent interview:
How do you feel about the success that The Last Drive-In has had since it first premiered, and the positive reaction on social media and from people you’ve met at recent conventions?
Joe Bob Briggs: Well, I'm amazed. The good vibes just keep on coming, and more and more people are joining our little group. So I'm very happy with everything that's going on with the show. I'm still not sure exactly why we're so popular because we're using the format that I've used twice before, going back to the ’80s. I think there's a desire for community right now.

A distorted, goateed David Bowie appears in the rare video for “Repetition,” a 1997 version of the Lodger track. The song appears on his upcoming LP ChangesNowBowie, a Record Store Day 2020 release.
Titled “Repetition ’97,” the video was filmed at the Earthling tour rehearsals in Hartford, Connecticut, by Tim Pope. “Johnny is a man/And he’s bigger than you,” Bowie sings over an acoustic guitar. “And he could have married Anne with the blue silk blouse/He could have married Anne with the blue silk blouse.”

It’s been almost a decade now since a new Friday the 13th movie made it to cinemas, and going by the recent legal messiness around the property, we may still have some wait ahead of us. But should Jason Voorhees ever be free for further films, Ryan Turek of Blumhouse Productions would be happy to give the franchise a shot.
The producer has already been involved in one unusually well received slasher reboot with last year’s Halloween, and in an interview with Screen Rant, Turek speculated on how he might handle Friday the 13th if the opportunity ever arose:
“That’s a tricky one as well. I’m in the minority when it comes to Friday the 13th 2009, I think. I think that is a terrific mixtape of all Friday the 13th films. You know, where it kind of embraces 1 and 3 and some of the other favorites. How...

Some movies – some entire franchises, in fact – just can’t win. Although audiences constantly clamor for something new to come out of Hollywood, coming in the shape of either original movies or cleaver twists on increasingly familiar franchise formulae, they have constantly reacted with scorn and derision when they end up getting just that. Exciting new movies like The Nice Guys (2016), Sing Street (2016) and The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) – all, incidentally, from the same year – are passed over for familiar dreck and novel twists on long-running series are often punished with low box office

Though most hardcore devotees would likely agree that the fifth iteration in the iconic slasher franchise is one of the weakest entries in the series, Friday The 13th: A New Beginning will forever live on in our memories as one of the more noteworthy and experimental chapters thanks to one simple fact: The infamous butcher that lies at the heart of the franchise, Jason Voorhees, is actually – whisper it – dead. Like, dead as a blood-spattered dodo dead.
This didn’t stop the masked killer from “returning” in Part V, however, by virtue of a ham-fisted twist that involved a loner ambulance driver and the brutal, tragic murder of his mentally challenged son (in one of the most tense scenes from the movie, we might add). Despite a lukewarm reception from fans back in the day, Part V has gone on to have a bit of a renaissance in more recent times.

Charlie Sheen has issued a categorical denial of allegations that he engaged in sexual activity with child star Corey Haim when the younger actor was 13.
The denial relates to a claim made in the National Enquirer by Friday The 13th: A New Beginning star Dominick Brascia, who was himself accused of abusing Haim in September 2016, a claim he strongly denies. He has also denied claims that he had a consensual sexual relationship with the Lost Boys actor.
The alleged incident involving Sheen and Haim relates to 1986, when the two were filming Lucas. Brascia says that Haim told him about it shortly before his death in 2010.
Hollywood Reporter reported Sheen's representative issued a statement, which read: "Charlie Sheen categorically denies these allegations."

Poor Shelly. Other than the chocolate-loving Joey (who has been referenced plenty of times on our Corpse Club podcast—"Forget it, Vic, just forget it!") from Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, Shelly from Part 3 is perhaps the most polarizing character in the franchise.
Some (like myself) find him to be a misunderstood loner seeking acceptance, while others find him annoying as hell. Either way, he's vital to the franchise for putting Jason's hockey mask in the killer's blood-smeared hands, and Fright Rags is paying their respects to the mask's original owner with their new Midnight Madness T-shirt.
