Team Ninja may not have made the best samurai game with Rise of the Ronin, but to the developer’s credit, it’s certainly made the most samurai game. That’s to say, Team Ninja has crafted something that feels like a massive, unwieldy turducken of all the best ideas from these types of games, with some FromSoftware and Ubisoft sauce sprinkled on top to bring the whole thing together. There’s an intricacy of interlocking systems here that’s certainly ambitious, but not all of the game’s elements are as polished as they could have been.
The good news is that players will at least be well-motivated to press on regardless. At first blush, the story may come across like an anime based on F/X’s Shōgun, spinning a fantastical tale of violence and political turmoil against the backdrop of the Edo period of Japan and focused on...

Two-time Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange will receive this year’s CineMerit Award at the Munich International Film Festival, honoring her “remarkable contributions to the world of cinema.”
In addition to her two Academy Awards — for best supporting actress in Tootsie in 1983 and best actress in Blue Sky in 1995 — Lange can point to a total of six Oscar nominations, three Emmy wins (from 10 nods), five Golden Globes (from 16 noms) and one Tony award.
Alongside her impressive film career, Lange has more recently become something of a muse for Ryan Murphy, appearing in multiple seasons of American Horror Story — she’s picked up five Emmy nominations and two wins for the FX drama — and has been dazzling as Joan Crawford alongside Susan Sarandon’s Bette Davis in the FX/Hulu miniseries Feud: Bette and Joan.

This post contains spoilers for "Fallout" season 1.
In its first season, Prime Video's adaptation of the hugely popular video game series "Fallout" follows several heroes and villains who are still working to understand what's real in their worlds. Walton Goggins' movie star character, Cooper Howard, slowly comes to realize that America is making up an apocalypse to sell back to itself, while Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus quickly learns that the powerful men he idolized as a kid aren't all they're cracked up to be. It's Ella Purnell's Vault-dweller Lucy, though, who gets the biggest reality check when she leaves her underground dwelling to explore a ruthless world with no place for the chipper sense of entitlement she was taught to convey.
Given the themes of the series, it's fitting that it's just as hard to tell what's real and what's not behind-the-scenes of "Fallout" as it is in front of the camera.

Could Scottish soccer be the next to benefit from Hollywood investment?
In a situation reminiscent of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McEIhenney’s takeover of Welsh soccer side Wrexham, former Netflix international originals chief Erik Barmack looks set to acquire a stake in Motherwell Fc.
A report in the Scottish Daily Mail has named Barmack as the unnamed U.S. investor who is planning to buy into the Scottish team, which plays in the Scottish Premiership alongside the likes of giants Celtic and Rangers.
Reynolds and McElhenney took over Wrexham for about £2M ($2.5M) in February 2021 when the club was playing outside the professional English leagues, but have led a transformation by investing heavily and marketing the team internationally through FX doc series Welcome to Wrexham. Wrexham currently sits third in League Two, three below the Premier League, and Motherwell fans will be hoping Barmack can lead their club to similar new glories.

In an age where remakes and re-adaptations have earned a wildly detested reputation, Hiroyuki Sanada’s Shōgun may justify the need for a fresh iteration. The 2024 show is slated to revisit the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, which was previously brought to audience entertainment on the television format in 1980.
The original miniseries was produced by Paramount Television and written by Eric Bercovici, and at the time was immensely well-received.

However, those acquainted with the first adaptation noticed that there was more to be told, and from a perspective that didn’t treat the Japanese point of view as secondary to English navigator John Blackthorne’s. This inclusivity characterizes the nuanced, complex story that Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks, and executive producer Michaela Clavell intend to tell in their recent limited series.

Paul D’Amato, the actor who played the gloriously vicious Tim “Dr. Hook” McCracken opposite Paul Newman in Slap Shot, died Monday after a long battle with progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain condition that is similar to Parkinson’s disease. D’Amato was 76.
The news was shared online by his longtime partner (and fellow actor) Marina Re.
D’Amato got the role in Slap Shot in part because he could hold his own on the ice. He played college hockey at Emerson and also for a team called The Reds in a Burlington, Vt, league in 1975.
But D’Amato also had screen presence, going toe to toe with Newman as his character’s wild-eyed nemesis from the Syracuse Bulldogs who earned his nickname through his scalpel-like skills with a hockey stick. Newman’s Reggie Dunlop called out McCracken by name during a pregame radio interview, referring to him as the...

Director James Gunn brought a new level of emotional power to “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” by making the wisecracking Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and his tragic backstory the centerpiece of the finale. This required the Oscar-nominated VFX (led by Marvel’s production VFX supervisor Stéphane Ceretti) to up its game considerably to meet the demands of Gunn’s intimate scale and epic scope.
Framestore (led by VFX supervisor Alexis Wajsbrot) was tasked with expanding and improving its keyframe animation of Rocket through six stages, from genetically altered baby raccoon to hardened weapons expert. This allowed for greater nuance and complexity in the facial performance along with more detailed fur and an evolved gait and physiology. “It’s really a chain of artists that work together and get that to the level where other humans looking at it are crying because of a CG raccoon,” Ceretti told IndieWire in the video below.

Just in time for Halloween, the long-running horror series "American Horror Story" from creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk is back for yet another season of pulpy pop terror. Over the show's entire run, which began in October of 2011, it's always been fun for fans to try and guess the theme of each season and piece together clues that reveal whatever subtitle will be attached to the next installment.
Officially, season 12 has been dubbed "American Horror Story: Delicate" and stars series regular Emma Roberts as a Hollywood starlet named Anna Alcott who's desperate to have a child and start a family. The award-winning horror anthology series has certainly had its ups and downs over the years, but "Delicate" looks like a return to form based on the teaser trailer and the first episode which premiered on September 20, 2023. Obvious comparisons to "Rosemary's Baby" aside, season 12 looks like it will also be...

Taffy Brodesser-Akner knows something about love.
And men and women, and why they fall in and out of love.
It’s no wonder why her debut novel, Fleishman Is in Trouble became an immediate New York Times Bestseller, as well as a notch on the National Book Award longlist, resonating with many. Now, Fleishman Is in Trouble is a 7x Primetime Emmy nominated FX series.
Similar to the 4x Oscar winning movie Annie Hall, Fleishman Is in Trouble is a deconstruction of how a great relationship goes very wrong. Part of the blame goes to those couples who are managing their egos, as they head into the middle ages of middle age.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

HBO is once again the leader among Emmy nominations — though it’s a little closer than it was a year ago.
The premium cable outlet and sibling streamer Max gathered 127 nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards on Wednesday. That’s 13 fewer nods than the two platforms combined to receive in 2022.
HBO and Max’s total is two dozen more than second-place Netflix, which had 103 nominations. Apple TV+ finished third with 50 nominations, Hulu and Amazon’s Prime Video got 42 each, and Disney+ has 40. (There’s a bit of fuzziness with the Hulu numbers, as the Television Academy counted shows like The Bear and Fleishman Is in Trouble under FX, which produced them, even though they streamed solely on Hulu. Disney says Hulu has 64 total nominations rather than 42 as listed by the Academy, with the FX/Hulu shows accounting for the discrepancy.)

“Thank you, chef.” It has been a very good week for the folks at Hulu and The Beef, as the second season of the acclaimed TV show “The Bear” has become the most-watched premiere for an FX show in the service’s history. According to the Disney-owned streamer, the show saw a 70% increase from Season 1 to 2 in terms of total hours streamed during the first four days of release. Admittedly, “The Bear” was a surprise hit last summer and took some time to catch on, but entered its second season with as much anticipation as any summer premiere, so the disparity between the season premieres shouldn’t come as much of a shock.

In the spring of 2020, a handful of shows developed to air on the basic cable channel FX instead debuted exclusively on Hulu. It was an attempt to better integrate different parts of the Disney corporate family in the aftermath of Disney acquiring most of Fox’s film and television assets, as well as an acknowledgment that more and more viewers were waiting to watch shows on streaming. Cutting out the legacy media middleman just seemed like a logical next step toward the medium’s future.
It was also, however, extremely confusing.

In 1988 Tom Cruise was arguably the biggest star in the world. Top Gun came out in 1986 and was the year’s top-grossing movie. It wasn’t only a hit – it was a cultural phenomenon, and Cruise became a rare kind of movie star. He was a sex symbol for the ladies, but the guys liked him too. Speaking personally, having been born in 1981, I vividly remember owning the VHS tape of Top Gun and playing it on a loop. Cruise was my first concept of a movie star; to kids like me, he was like a cool Big Brother-type figure. He was the guy we all wanted to be with him riding motorcycles, rocking fantastic hair and an attitude which was never too threatening while blasting awesome 80s rock music and having the girls go crazy for him. He was the man, and if any movie ever cemented his big-screen stardom,...

“Elvis” director of photography Mandy Walker won Feature Film at the ASC Awards March 5, when the American Society of Cinematographers handed out its honors at the 37th annual awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Walker’s win in the feature film category could prove prescient; 17 out of the last 36 years found the ASC film winner winning the Academy Award. But it’s worth noting that Oscar nominees “Tár” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” were not among the ASC nominees.

The newest edgy FX drama doesn’t rely on biker gangs, rogue cops, rural-country drug lords or a man left alone in a world filled with women. Instead, it will focus on football players.
A gridiron game might not normally qualify for association with series like “Sons of Anarchy,” “The Shield,” “Justified” or “Y: The Last Man.” but starting this week, there will be plenty of nail-biting at FX, which is picking up live sports for the first time in years. XFL games will turn up on the network on weekends, a way for Disney to keep showing all the NBA, NHL and college matches that ESPN fans expect, while making a bid to bring other viewers in with the lure of football in the spring, when the NFL is on hiatus.

The title “Under the Banner of Heaven” comes from John Taylor, third president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Lds). “God is greater than the United States, and when the Government conflicts with Heaven we will be ranged under the banner of Heaven against the Government.” Taylor was— like his predecessors Brigham Young and Joseph Smith, the church’s famous founder — a professed polygamist. “The United States says we cannot marry more than one wife; God says different.”
Plural marriage is only a small plot point in the FX true-crime limited series “Under the Banner of Heaven,” centering on the 1984 murder of a Mormon mother and her infant daughter. But it’s ultimately what gets Dan Lafferty (Wyatt Russell) excommunicated, and that is a very big deal in Lds-land. “The Laffertys — they’re kind of like the Utah Kennedys,” explains Detective Pyre (played by Andrew Garfield). FX is joining National Geographic as a singular brand across linear and streaming Disney platforms globally. Beginning this month, the “FX on Hulu” branding will be phased out, with FX programming — exclusive originals as well as next-day shows from the FX linear channels and library content — curated in the new “FX” hub on the streamer. Additionally, the FX mark will now move above the titles on every one of the network’s shows.
The FX on Hulu hub was launched in March 2020. It became a streaming destination for FX content, which had been scattered on various SVOD platforms, including the now-defunct FX+/FXNow as well as Netflix which still carries some of the network’s most popular series such as the American Horror Story and American Crime Story franchises
Two years later, FX brass felt that FX’s association with Hulu for streaming already has been established. Additionally, the “FX on Hulu” moniker only works domestically, creating a branding dilemma for FX shows as they stream on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other international territories. Now all FX content — original to streaming or second window to cable — will be organized in an “FX” section on any Disney streaming platform inside and outside of the U.S.
The move comes as FX prepares to double its 2021 programming output in 2022 with a target of 30 shows (25 scripted and five unscripted). Some of the increase is due to the lingering effect from the pandemic-related production shutdown, which delayed a slew of series, and some of it is FX ramping up development and ramping up the number of green lights after the Disney acquisition. The unified FX branding also applies to development, with projects now going through the development process as FX series and a determination whether they would go to FX/Fxx or Hulu made in the final stage.
“We realized a decade ago that FX would soon no longer be primarily a location, but a rather branded mark of quality that would travel across multiple distribution platforms,” Landgraf said. “For 20 years, we have worked tirelessly to make the FX mark synonymous to the consumer with original programming that is distinctive and excellent as well as entertaining. This change furthers the natural evolution of FX and we are grateful to the Company and our partners at Dmed for their belief and investment in FX branded programming. We are confident that the FX brand, wherever the consumer finds it, will continue to deliver the highest quality programs any service has to offer.”
Rebecca Campbell, Chairman, International and Direct-to-Consumer, lifted the veil a bit on consumption of FX content on Hulu since March 2020.
“With more than a billion hours of FX programming viewed on Hulu since the launch of the FX hub, we’ve further cemented Hulu as the home for stories that impact culture, inspire conversation, and connect with viewers in meaningful ways and we’re excited to see the brand evolve to connect with international audiences on Disney+ and Star+,” said Campbell.
Since launching its first original scripted drama in March of 2002 with The Shield, FX has received 452 Emmy Awards nominations, winning 82 Emmys. Over the past 10 years, FX shows have also won the second highest total of AFI Awards for Television of any TV network or streaming service.
The FX library currently contains more than 170 seasons and 1800 episodes of television.
The bulk of the network’s originals come from FX Productions, with plans for closer collaboration with Disney Television Studios—20th Television and ABC Signature — as well as The Onyx Collective and Searchlight.

There’s no way to precisely quantify the colossal amount of drugs Black Sabbath inhaled in 1972 while making their fourth album, which they’d hoped to title Snowblind, in tribute to their favorite powdered narcotic. All they have to go on is the bill their manager presented to them when they were done with it. “Whether you can believe him or not, the record cost, I think, $65,000,” bassist Geezer Butler says drolly, “and the cocaine bill was $75,000.”

It was a good win for the Green Bay Packers, but maybe even a bigger win for Sunday Night Football last night – at least compared to last week.
As well as breaking news from the New York Times of the long hidden reality of Donald Trump’s taxes and finances, Green Bay’s match up with the New Orleans Saints faced the determining game of the NBA Eastern Conference finals on ESPN on Sunday. The Miami Heat’s Game 5 win over the Boston Celtics sets up a classic Finals with the Florida team taking on LeBron James and the LA Lakers starting later this week. Last night, there were also high- profile debuts further up the cable dial with Season 4 of Fargo on FX and The Comey Rule on Showtime potentially nipping away at Snf.
Still, with all that, early numbers for Snf are almost the same as last week...

“The Shield” was the flagship drama series that launched FX into the original programming space, but FX boss John Landgraf says that he doesn’t see a way for a similar kind of cop show to make it on the air in 2020.
“I don’t mean to say that [cop shows] will cease to exist,” Landgraf told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday. “But FX has never existed to do an ordinary version of any type of show, and I don’t know how to do a cop show at the moment, to be honest with you. “I don’t mean to say that [cop shows] will cease to exist,” Landgraf told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday. “But FX has never existed to do an ordinary version of any type of show, and I don’t know how to do a cop show at the moment, to be honest with you. I’m not saying one will never be done or there is no way to do it, I just don’t know how to do it.”

Character actor known for the films First Blood and Cocoon, and in his stage work a genuine colossus
Built like a truck but with the capacity to be as gentle as a pussycat, Brian Dennehy was smarter than the average bear-like character actor. The 6ft 3in performer, who has died aged 81 from a heart attack resulting from sepsis, made his screen breakthrough as an adversarial small-town sheriff in First Blood (1982), the thoughtful opening instalment in what would become the Rambo action series. It was the first in his hat-trick of hits from that decade: he also twinkled benignly as one of a group of aliens who have a rejuvenating effect on an elderly community in Cocoon (1985) and played a grizzled but amiable cop in F/X (1986), an enjoyable thriller set in the special effects industry; it was popular enough to spawn a 1991 sequel in which he also starred.
