Matt Sweeney, the inventor and special effects artist who received an Oscar nomination for his work on Apollo 13 and three Technical Achievement Awards during his long career, has died. He was 75.
Sweeney died Monday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank after a long battle with lung cancer, Dave Burle, who worked alongside Sweeney at his company for many years, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Sweeney also handled effects for films in the Lethal Weapon and Fast & Furious franchise and for 1941 (1979), 9 to 5 (1980), On Golden Pond (1981), Goonies (1985), The Color Purple (1985), The Lost Boys (1987), Big Top Pee-wee (1988), Arachnophobia (1990), Natural Born Killers (1994) and Galaxy Quest (1999), among many other movies.

Those who want another taste of the spice will have to wait a bit longer.
On Thursday, Warner Bros. announced it had delayed “Dune: Part Two” from the film’s November 3 release date until March 14, 2024 – a shift in release plans long expected amid the current writers’ and actors’ strikes.
Back in July, Variety reported “Dune: Part Two” was the most likely of the upcoming Warner Bros. slate to abandon the current year. That has proven true, at least for now. According to the trades, “Wonka,” “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” and “The Color Purple” all remain set for December releases.
“Dune: Part Two,” however, will now arrive in March, just days after the 2024 Oscars ceremony where it was expected to compete in multiple categories. The original “Dune,” released in 2021, received 10 nominations, including Best Picture, and won six awards. Whether the sequel can repeat that kind of award success will not...

Dune 2 has been officially delayed. The highly-anticipated second part of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic (based on Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic) was set to arrive on Nov. 3, but will now hit theaters on March 15, 2024.
The decision comes as the major Hollywood studios continue to — by many accounts — stall on negotiating a fair contract with the striking actors union. The strike not only prevents actors from working but also promoting new projects. Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, the two studios behind Dune 2, have ostensibly decided they would rather...

“Dune: Part Two,” the second half of a two-part theatrical adaptation of Frank Herbert’s first 500-page tome, has been pushed from Nov. 3, 2023 to March 15, 2024. Warner Bros. Discovery also delayed the release of “Godzilla x Kong: The Lost Empire” from the new “Dune 2” date to April 12, 2024. Since April 12 was originally the slot for the animated “Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” the animated action fantasy will now open on Dec. 13, 2024.
The release date shuffles — and shift of “Dune: Part Two” out of awards contention for this year — come as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still ongoing.
The choice to move Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” sequel was rooted in wanting the cast to be able to participate in a global pre-release marketing campaign. Screenwriters and actors are currently forbidden from promoting their films due to the strikes.

In a major change to the November box office calendar, Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated Dune: Part Two has been pushed to next year amid the ongoing actors strike, which prevents stars from promoting their projects.
Legendary and Warner Bros.’ big-budget sequel was slated to open Nov. 3 in North America timed to its global rollout, but will instead debut domestically on March 15, 2024. In a twinned move, Legendary and Warners pushed back Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire one month to April 12, 2024 (it previously was set to open on Dune‘s new March 15 date).
Lastly, pushing the next Godzilla installment resulted in relocating New Line and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim from April 12, 2024, to Dec. 13, 2024. (New Line’s live-action Lotr tentpoles were a December staple.)

In what was to be expected, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros’ highly anticipated sequel, Dune: Part Two, from Denis Villeneuve is moving off its Nov. 3 theatrical release to March 15, 2024 due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The sequel based on the Frank Herbert penned novel will also play Imax on its new date. Don’t be surprised if Dune: Part Two fires off either the Berlin Film Festival or SXSW in the late winter/early spring.

There had been rumblings that Warner Bros. was considering pushing the release of some of their upcoming projects to 2024, including The Color Purple, Dune: Part Two, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but it seems that the Aquaman sequel will be holding firm.
Given reports of multiple reshoots and lukewarm test screenings (not to mention the ongoing WGA and SAG strike), it would have been entirely understandable if Warner Bros. decided to push the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. However, Warner Bros. insiders told Variety that the Aquaman sequel “is expected to hold its December 20 release date.” Following the release of Blue Beetle in just two weeks, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be the last leftover of the old Dceu before the franchise re-launches with James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.

When director Justin Simien was looking for a composer to score Disney’s “Haunted Mansion,” he called his frequent collaborator Kris Bowers. The two had worked together on “Dear White People” and Simien’s last feature, “Bad Hair.” “I’ve always wanted to have that relationship with the director where you work on a number of projects and develop this trust,” says Bowers.
For their latest film, which opens in theaters July 28, Bowers pays homage to the Disney theme-park ride and its famous “Grim Grinning Ghosts” tune while making his mark on the feature. With “Haunted Mansion,” which stars Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson, Bowers tinkered with ghostly organ sounds and brought in elements of New Orleans jazz for the film’s sonic landscape.
Although it’s inspired by the ride, which is established and beloved IP, the film delves into themes of grief and relationships.

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

Bad guys tend to have a good time at the Oscars. From Christoph Waltz‘s 2010 “Inglourious Basterds” win for Best Supporting Actor to Anthony Hopkins‘ iconic 1992 Best Actor win for “The Silence of the Lambs,” you can always count on Oscar voters to take notice of a villain.
While those two examples are fictional, some actors have also had Oscar luck by playing real-life killers. For example, Charlize Theron won for playing Aileen Wuornos. Wuornos murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990 while she was a prostitute in Florida. She shot and robbed the seven men, who Wuornos claimed were clients who had either raped or attempted to rape, claiming self-defense. However, she was sentenced to death and executed in 2002 for six of the murders. Theron took home the Best Actress Oscar in 2004 for her transformative performance as the killer in “Monster.”

The status of films releasing later this year may be subject to change with the whole internal issues that Hollywood is having; however, some of the smaller titles are seemingly safer than others. One of the films that is aiming for a December release date is A24’s The Iron Claw. The film, which stars Zac Efron and The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White, is a biopic based on the story of the wrestling family that became legends in the world of sports entertainment, the Von Erichs. The Iron Claw‘s release schedule is slated around bigger movies, such as Illumination’s animated film, Migration, as well as the higher-profile Warner Bros films Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Color Purple, provided they aren’t delayed like rumors may suggest.
So far, the film is in post-production, which means it is not expected to premiere during the film festival circuit.

A24 will release “The Iron Claw,” a sports drama starring Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White, in theaters around Christmas.
The film will debut nationwide on Dec. 22, sharing a release date with a very different kind of family film, Universal and Illumination’s animated comedy “Migration.” Jason Momoa’s superhero sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (Dec. 20) is expected to hit the big screen a few days prior, while the glitzy musical adaptation of “The Color Purple” (Dec. 25) is slated to arrive a little later.

Barbenheimer — the same-day release of two polar opposite movies, Christopher Nolan‘s bleak “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig‘s dazzling “Barbie” — will go down in history. Both movies have been very well received and the phenomenon that is Barbenheimer has led to packed theatres the likes of which these days are usually seen for superhero movies. Whether you prefer “Oppenheimer” or “Barbie,” cinema is the winner here.
But one of the biggest takeaways from both movies is two wildly different performances from supporting actors that threaten to steal their entire, respective movies: Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer” and Ryan Gosling as Ken in “Barbie.” Downey Jr produces another layered performance as the political player Strauss, who at first appears to be an ally of Cillian Murphy‘s Oppenheimer but is later revealed to be playing a game the whole time with the intention of bringing down the father of the atomic bomb.

The extraordinary success of Barbie and Oppenheimer was a needed shot of adrenaline for Hollywood and theater owners as domestic box office revenue hit $311.1 million over the July 21-23 frame, the fourth-biggest weekend of all time. Never in history has one movie opened to $100 million or more, and a second one to more than $50 million. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie strutted to a stupendous $162 million, while Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer earned an equally stunning $82.4 million, well ahead of all expectations for a three-hour biographical drama.
But will it be the last major cinematic event of 2023 if the actors and writers strikes aren’t resolved in the coming weeks and the big fall and winter tentpoles consider relocating?
The box office ecosystem is still incredibly fragile and has yet to return to pre-covid levels of health. The domestic summer box office before Barbenheimer was down 7 percent from the same corridor in 2022, a disturbing trend.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is slated for a November 3rd release, but there have been rumblings that the sequel could be bumped to 2024 depending on how long the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike lasts.
The first Dune movie was released during the height of the pandemic, with a day-and-date release in theaters and on HBO Max. Denis Villeneuve was unhappy with this choice, even worrying that it could kill the franchise before it even began. Thankfully, Dune was a box-office success, grossing $402 million and ensuring that Dune: Part Two would happen. But Legendary and Warner Bros. are clearly hoping that Dune: Part Two will be a bigger blockbuster, and if Timothée Chalamet (Wonka), Zendaya (Spider-Man: No Way Home), and the other stars can’t take part in the promotions, Deadline reports that they might just push the release of the film back.

“Oppenheimer” is one of Christopher Nolan‘s best movies according to both critics and audiences. While the film’s script, technical achievements, and directing are all being praised, however, it’s the cast that makes the film pop. Simply put, it is one of the most stacked casts in cinema history outside of, say, “Avengers: Endgame.”
Cillian Murphy leads the line in the titular role of Robert J. Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, while “Endgame” actor himself, Robert Downey Jr., portrays political player Lewis Strauss and Emily Blunt is Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty. Matt Damon, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Conti, Florence Pugh, and Alden Ehrenreich also appear. As such, our odds charts are currently predicting that “Oppenheimer” will land not one acting bid, not two acting bids, but three nominations for its cast. Here’s the rundown.
Best Actor — Cillian Murphy
This is the obvious one and for good reason.

“Barbie” has become a resounding success for Warner Bros. and director Greta Gerwig. The film grossed $155 million in its opening weekend and received rave reviews from critics hailing the direction, script, design, and, above all, performances.
Margot Robbie leads the cast as the titular main Barbie while Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, and Nicola Coughlan, amongst others, play different variations of Barbie. Ryan Gosling leads the pack of Kens along with Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Ncuti Gatwa. Also in the movie are Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, and Ariana Greenblatt. This has led to some intriguing odds charts for the movie on our site, meaning that the “Barbie” cast could theoretically receive up to five Oscar nominations. Here’s the rundown.

“Barbie” is a box office smash, along with its acclaim from critics and audiences alike. If you follow the social media chatter and the general feeling from most pundits, it could be a viable awards contender for Warner Bros. One category being debated is where the screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach would be able to compete — whether in original or adapted screenplay. The answer lies in how the WGA classifies it and whether the Academy could or would overrule that choice.
Variety confirms there are ongoing conversations with strategists and Warner Bros regarding where “Barbie” would compete at next year’s ceremony.
On the title cards, it reads “Based on ‘Barbie’ by Mattel,” which is, of course, a toy company. At the same time, there have been multiple CGI films and TV series featuring the fashion doll since its debut in the late 1980s (42 to be precise). This...

Given the chaos wrought by the SAG-AFTRA strike, Toronto has just announced a surprisingly strong first-wave lineup.
In recent days, festival regulars have been apprehensive about the prospects of starry English-language movies making it to Venice, Toronto and Telluride, especially after the blow Venice was dealt last week when Zendaya starrer Challengers pulled out of its opening slot and moved to a spring 2024 release.
Despite the challenges, TIFF’s Cameron Bailey has managed to pull in an impressive lineup of potential awards contenders and acquisition titles. Among the lineup are Emily Blunt starrer Pain Hustlers, Sony’s Dumb Money, Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman, Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Anthony Hopkins starrer One Life, Kate Winslet drama Lee, and plenty others. Two labor strikes may be upending Hollywood’s awards season and the film festivals that serve as launching pads for many Oscar contenders, but the Toronto International Film Festival signaled Monday that it still plans to showcase the best in cinema, unveiling its 2023 slate of movies.
Alexander Payne, Richard Linklater, Kore-eda Hirokazu and Justine Triet are among the auteurs who will be screening their latest works at the festival. Payne will be on hand with “The Holdovers,” a comedy set in a boarding school that reunites him with “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti, while Linklater is showing “Hit Man,” an action-comedy with Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. Kore-eda and Triet will screen “Monster” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” both of which premiered at Cannes, where the latter won the Palme d’Or.
All told, the festival’s first wave of selections includes 60 films, representing 70 countries around the world. But the lineup...

“I shall be your Ken, for his story must be told.” That’s the text that Ryan Gosling said he sent to Greta Gerwig after he found a Ken doll face down in the mud by a smushed lemon and decided to play Ken in Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Thank the cinematic Gods for that doll and that lemon, because Gosling has just turned in one of the most joyful, unique, and technically perfect performances of the year.
Gosling is no stranger to the golden glow of the Oscars having landed two Best Actor bids in 2007 and 2017 for “Half Nelson” and “La La Land,” respectively. But it turns out that pink suits Gosling just as much as gold, as multiple critics have noted.
Jocelyn Noveck (AP News) observed: “A very blond Ryan Gosling gleefully chews the scenery — or, inhales it — and is never better than when conveying Ken’s forced enthusiasm...

The Toronto Film Festival is at a critical moment after three difficult years following the Covid-19 pandemic, but “the festival will take place,” says Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF.
TIFF has typically been a star-studded affair and staple of awards season. However, what the red carpets at the gala premieres and tribute ceremonies that have gone to significant A-listers like Kate Winslet will ultimately look like, remains unknown.
The longtime festival director doubled down on moving forward with this year’s festival, whether the big stars are in attendance or not. This comes amid ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that have halted the Hollywood industry, putting the remaining months of movies and TV shows into unknown territory.
While Bailey is optimistic about TIFF’s plans and its future, he acknowledges the critical moment the festival finds itself after being heavily impacted by Covid and still trying to recapture its mojo.

Luca Guadagnino's sexy tennis movie will not be on the fall festival circuit after all: News has broken via The Hollywood Reporter that the Zendaya-led drama "Challengers" is no longer set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It also will not hit theaters this September as originally planned. Instead, its theatrical release has been bumped all the way to April of next year.
"Challengers" already has MGM on board as its distributor, making it easy for the film to sidestep the upcoming festival season and take the theatrical route instead. This decision comes in the wake of the ongoing Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes, the former of which asks actors to not promote new projects in the midst of an ongoing fight for fair wages, streaming residuals, and protections against artificial intelligence, among other things. As one source put it to THR, "How...

It is a period of civil unrest. Amidst the tumultuous relations between show and business, there is a great complication in the future of entertainment. The creatives have been outspoken on the lackluster treatment the high powers of the business have been bestowing upon them, and in turn, the content that these studios rely on has hit a snag. While there are still many projects in the can and awaiting release, some of which just needing post-production, a big part of the business is the marketing and promotion. The Screen Actors’ Guild is currently forbidding their talent from partaking in any promotional process with films set to be released.
Since the promotion of the films benefits the most from the stars making rounds and dedicating attention to their product, Warner Bros. is considering pushing the release of their upcoming tentpole films to next year, according to Variety. Dune Part Two,...

As the SAG-AFTRA strike begins its second week, there’s no indication that negotiations will resume between that guild or the WGA with AMPTP any time soon. And that’s bad news for studios, as actors on strike will begin not only to affect the production of new work, but the premieres of upcoming schedule films. May a studio pull off a successful premiere of a tentpole movie without its cast present?

It appears that the ongoing strikes of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) will have even more repercussions than we initially anticipated. When the WGA started the strike last May, every production that was in the writing process was put on hold, and while some productions with finished scripts continued without the writers, some filmings were also put on hold until the strike was resolved.
Things got more complicated earlier this month when Fran Drescher, the president of SAG-AFTRA, announced the strike of actors as well, which immediately put almost every ongoing production in Hollywood on hold. However, despite all of that, it was expected that completed movies, which are set for imminent release, would be released normally since their productions are completed. But then a new problem arose; during the SAG-AFTRA, the actors weren’t only...

Comedy doesn’t always have the easiest time being taken seriously come Oscar season. Movies based on established toy brands don’t, either. But, based on reaction to Sunday night’s huge world premiere at the Shrine in downtown Los Angeles, as well as my own feelings watching it with the packed crowd of first-nighters, Barbie just may have the stuff to not only become a smash box office hit this summer (I would now guarantee it), but also a surprising genuine awards contender for Warner Bros and Mattel (I can’t believe I just wrote that sentence).
The formal review embargo is set for July 18 following critics screenings (Deadline’s Valerie Complex will be reviewing), but the social media embargo lifted at the conclusion of last night’s screening and initial reactions are rampant. For my money this is a razor-sharp, hilarious and totally fun movie that more than...

The second trailer for “Dune: Part Two” arrives presumably in time to play with opening weekend showings of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” meaning there will absolutely be time for a third sell between now and mid-November. This sweeping, very serious 184-second sell promises mass battle scenes, epic confrontations, new characters played by Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken as well as plenty of handwringing as to whether Paul Atreides’s destiny is to become a chosen one closer to Harry Potter or Anakin Skywalker.

Steven Spielberg’s unprecedented five-decade stint at the apex of Hollywood owes as much to his versatility as his filmmaking talents. Since bursting onto the scene with “The Sugarland Express” in 1974, the director has proven himself capable of working in nearly every genre imaginable, oftentimes in the same year.
After helping to create the modern summer blockbuster with early hits like “Jaws” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Spielberg never rested on his laurels. He spent the 1980s alternating between family hits, like “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial,” and more dramatic fare, such as “The Color Purple,” while still finding time to direct the original “Indiana Jones” trilogy.
The most legendary example of Spielberg’s omnivorous approach to filmmaking came in 1993, when he managed to release “Jurassic Park” and “Schindler’s List” in the same year. The summer dinosaur flick became a cultural phenomenon and introduced the world to the miracles...

Few clubs in Hollywood are as exclusive as that reserved for Egot winners. The acronym refers to winning the grand slam of all four major entertainment awards: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. That means the immensely talented individual will have displayed excellence in television, recording, film, and theater - clearly picking up an Egot isn't an everyday occurrence.
At the Grammy Awards back in February, the latest actor joined the Egot club: Viola Davis. Davis won her first Grammy for best audio book, narration, and storytelling for narrating the audio version of her 2022 memoir, "Finding Me." Davis was the third Black woman to achieve Egot status after Jennifer Hudson and Whoopi Goldberg, and the fourth black person after Hudson, Goldberg, and John Legend.

Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock and Roll and eight-time Grammy winner, spent much of her career on the music stage. But the industry legend — who died Wednesday at 83 — had serious acting aspirations she says were limited by not just how few roles there were for Black women in Hollywood at the time, but the type of parts she was being offered.
That includes the leading role in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple, which featured Whoopi Goldberg and saw the actress-comedian score an Academy Award nomination. (The Tony-winning stage musical of Alice Walker’s famed book, about a Black woman living in the 1900s South, is getting a movie of its own out this December starring Fantasia Barrino and Halle Bailey.)

The first The Color Purple trailer has arrived with American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino reprising her Broadway role. The epic musical reunites Steven Spielberg, the director of the 1985 film, with Oprah Winfrey, who made her feature film debut playing Sofia. ‘The Color Purple’ Musical Showcases Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino in Bold First Trailer (Video)
Oprah Winfrey said at this year’s CinemaCon that director Blitz Bazawule’s musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel is “not your Mama’s ‘Color Purple’,” and based on the first trailer, she’s right. Warner Bros. released the first trailer today, and between cinematographer Dan Laustsen’s cinematography and Fantasia Barrino’s soaring vocals, there’s enough packed into two minutes to bring out all the emotions.
Like Walker’s groundbreaking 1982 novel on which the musical is based, this feature follows Celie (Barrino as an adult and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as a child), a Black woman struggling to survive in the South during the 1900s.
We see several sequences similar to what director Steven Spielberg had in his own adaptation of Walker’s book, released to theaters in 1985, including scenes of young Celie and her sister, Nettie (played by “Little Mermaid” star Halle Bailey as a teen) sitting in a tree,...

I know where I'll be this Christmas: seated for Blitz Bazawule's musical reinvention of Alice Walker's classic novel "The Color Purple." Musician and "Black Is King" director Bazawule will draw from the Broadway version of the story for a movie that'll probably look a whole lot different from Steven Spielberg's 1985 adaptation. The first trailer for the new movie just dropped, and it promises a vibrant, surprisingly joyous take on a deep story of love and friendship in the face of abuse.
/Film got a first look at the new "The Color Purple" at CinemaCon last month, where intertitles declared the movie "Not Your Mama's Color Purple" and producer Oprah Winfrey (who played Sofia in Spielberg's version) promised that "It's not your mama's 'Color Purple,' but your mama's gonna really like it." Bazawule's version, which comes from a script from "The Chi" and "Maid" writer Marcus Gardley,...

"All I had was my sister... She was the only one ever loved me." WB has revealed the first official trailer for The Color Purple, a new adaptation of the beloved, triumphant musical of the same name. Back in 1985, Steven Spielberg directed a non-musical version of this story (also called The Color Purple) which became a Broadway musical that first opened in 2005. He's producing this new version, too. This new updated take is also based on the musical, bringing it to theaters once again on Christmas Day at the end of 2023. It's a story of the life-long struggles of an African American woman living in the south during the early 1900s - focusing on two sisters and their lives. The Color Purple stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, plus Fantasia Barrino (in her major motion picture debut). Well, I must say...
