The pop culture nostalgia cycle might have moved on to the early 2000s, but for many filmmakers and movie fans, the '80s will never go out of style. That's certainly true for director Ti West, who returns this year with the third chapter of his horror trilogy that started with 2022's "X" and was shortly followed by a surprise prequel, "Pearl." Star Mia Goth will return for this summer's bloody conclusion, "MaXXXine," in which aspiring adult film star (and massacre survivor) Maxine Minx is now trying to break into mainstream movies with a role in horror movie "The Puritan II."
"MaXXXine" is set in 1985 Los Angeles, six years after the events of "X." West recently told Empire magazine that "the '80s aspect of it was a natural, chronological thing" -- but that it was also a great opportunity to draw inspiration from '80s movies. For many people,...

Will Smith was once known as one of cinema’s biggest blockbuster stars. There was a time when any movie released with his name attached was guaranteed money. While growing up in the 1980s, teen-focused cinema took more chances than it does today. Films that could be rated R were PG, and offensive language and slurs came from the mouths of babes. In my generation’s defense, we didn’t know any better, and time has shown how dated some ’80s themes and characters could be. It was a hell of a time to be alive, and some actors associated with this era are ready to reunite and evaluate their most significant contributions to film with Brats, a new feature-length documentary from filmmaker Andrew McCarthy.
ABC News Studios, in partnership with Neon and Network Entertainment, will bring Brats to Hulu in the United States on June 13. A Disney+ premiere will occur in select territories later this summer, following its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival.

“When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me: Qué será, será. Whatever will be, will be”
The opening of Michael Lehmann’s Heathers begins with a dreamy cover of a familiar song. Angelic voices ask a mother to predict the future only to be met with an infuriating response: “whatever will be, will be.” Her answer is most likely intended to present a life of limitless possibility, but as the introduction to a film devoid of competent parents, it feels like a noncommittal platitude. Heathers is filled with teenagers looking for guidance only to be let down by one adult after another. Gen Xers and elder millennials may have glamorized the outlandish fashion and creative slang while drooling over a smoking hot killer couple, but the violent film now packs an ominous punch.

When wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer Shawn “Heartbreak Kid” Michaels takes to social media and invites you to settle your rap rivalry in the squared circle — or Saturday Night Live takes a deep dive with a sketch — you know your quarreling is so huge it has permeated the mainstream. The musical conflict between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has escalated from a battle to an all-out hip-hop war that has the world keeping score. Each Mc has displayed a stern commitment to lyrical excellence, pettiness as well as some ingenious combat zone strategy. These are not two MCs who are satisfied with their multiple Grammys and platinum albums, they’re not rich and lazy, both are hungry and have been showing out for the culture.

Photo credit: “Shutterstock.AI” Nearly four decades after its initial release, The Breakfast Club has kept its place as one of the quintessential films of the ’80s. Starring five members of the Brat Pack — Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy — the film, which took place in a single location on a single day, stands out as a character study that perfectly captured teen life during the era. Written and directed by John Hughes, the movie was a critical and commercial hit. However, before it hit theaters, Nelson had his doubts. Speaking on a panel at Steel City Con, Nelson told the story about how he and Estevez saw a very early rough cut of the movie … and wished he hadn’t. Tiffany Haddish has addressed a viral moment from her stand-up performance at this weekend’s Netflix Is a Joke Festival, where she called out the protests happening on college campuses against the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
When speaking to TMZ in a video on Monday, Haddish acknowledged the response to her comments and said, “I think if they are going to protest for one place they should protest for all the places that are having genocide happening. How many Black people got to die before we can get a protest? … If you want to protest? Protest. But if you really want to be effective and make change, go up to the legislation office, go up to your Senator, call your council. Go to Congress. With X, Ti West lovingly re-conjured the scuzzy spirit of ‘70s classics like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. With its surprise prequel Pearl, he dialled back to clock to early Technicolor game-changers like The Wizard Of Oz, taking the yellow brick road and painting it blood-red. And now, for his trilogy-capper MaXXXine, he’s heading into the 1980s – taking Mia Goth’s aspiring star Maxine and plunging her into the sinister, seductive world of Hollywood.
As well as taking audiences six years beyond the events of X, in which Goth’s Maxine was the sole survivor of the Farmer’s Daughter massacre, the ‘80s setting of MaXXXine is a major influence on how the film looks and feels. “A big part of the aesthetic of the movie is the shiny parts of Hollywood [versus] the seedy parts of Hollywood,” West tells Empire in the Deadpool & Wolverine issue. “The shiny type of movies that are made,...

“Sixteen Candles” actor Gedde Watanabe says it “didn’t really occur” to him in 1984 that his character Long Duk Dong “was a stereotype.”
“It didn’t really occur to me that it was a stereotype, because there wasn’t really anything out there for Asian actors at the time,” Watanabe told People magazine. “It was just so scarce. So I didn’t think it was stereotypical or racist. Isn’t that weird?”
In fact, Chinese exchange student Long Duk Dong exemplified anti-stereotypes in his social standing in the teen film, according to the actor. Long Duk Dong parties, becomes popular, and even gets a girlfriend despite speaking in broken English.
“That was really unusual in a sense, for the Asian character to get the girl and party and be in bliss like that,” he said. Watanabe was being interviewed as part of the magazine’s 40th anniversary celebration of the John Hughes film.

It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. On “So You Think You Can Dance” season 18, “Challenge #1: Music Videos” led to the ousters of two female finalists: Avery Gay and Olivia Alboher. Then in “Challenge #2: Broadway,” two male contestants got the boot: Roman Nevinchanyi and Braylon Browner. That left six contestants to compete in “Challenge #3: Movies”: Madison Alvarado, Anthony Curley, Mariyah Hawkins, Easton Magliarditi, Jaylin Sanders and Dakayla Wilson. So what happened when they left the stage behind and headed for the big screen?

The vampire horror sub-genre has become increasingly popular yet again. Of course, the main representative of the genre of the recent years is the new TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, based on Anne Rice's famous gothic horror novel, but today we will talk specifically about the movies.
Last year alone saw the release of two feature-length vampire horror films, Renfield by Chris McKay and The Last Voyage of the Demeter by André Øvredal. What they have in common are one aspect: an absolute failure in terms of critical and audience sympathy.
In this context, the new horror film Abigail is particularly noteworthy. Even though it is currently showing rather modest box office indicators, the new movie has already managed to get rave reviews. That's all thanks to how intelligently the script is constructed, with relevant and genuinely clever references and to the 20th century works that inspired it.

For as long as “teenager” has been a demographic, there have been stories about teens breaking free from the status quo. While a lot of the modern great teen rebellion media is confined to the world of TV — where shows like “Euphoria” attract constant buzz — the archetypal troubled teen story remains 1955’s “Rebel Without a Cause.” Starring James Dean in unquestionably his defining role, a rebellious teen struggling with his demons in L.A., Nicholas Ray’s film spoke to young people at the time with its story of high schoolers struggling with, and going against, the social pressures that bring them down. Over the years it became a touchstone because its themes and its honesty transcends generations.
As the teen film has evolved and morphed as a genre, there’s always been room for stories of iconoclastic youth who don’t fit in with the status quo. Oftentimes, these...

What if we blend the elite private school setting of Robin Williams’ Dead Poets Society, the buddy humor and road atmosphere of Steve Martin’s Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Home Alone’s Christmas vibe? This seems to be a crazy mix, but it’s exactly what the best movie of the last year was, and it finally finds a new home on Prime Video.
Set in the early 1970s, the movie starts by showing a strict and seemingly erratic teacher of a boarding school in New England, Paul Hunham, who is forced to remain here on the Christmas break to observe the students who have nowhere to go on a holiday.
Hunham is then left with the school’s cafeteria manager, the charismatic Mary, and with a smart, though troublesome teenage student, Angus, and the trio are forced to meet the New Year together and to encounter each other’s inner conflicts and mysteries.

Through the lens of 2024, “Dogfight” plays like a subtle, personal film you would expect from indie director Nancy Savoca (“Household Saints”), but that’s not what Warner Bros. thought they were making.
“They were thinking ‘Porky’s.’ They thought it was a comedy,” said director Nancy Savoca while on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast to discuss “Dogfight,” which is entering the Criterion Collection on April 30.
At the end of the 1980s headed into the early ’90s, when Warners was developing Bob Comfort’s “Dogfight” screenplay, teen comedies were big business for the studios. Alongside the wild success of the classic slate of teen comedies John Hughes wrote, directed, or produced, the “Porky’s” trilogy came to define the sex comedies of the era. It’s through this lens the studio saw the dogfight competition in Comfort’s script: A group of young soldiers pick up the “ugliest” woman they can find, bring her to a bar,...

Jerrod Carmichael appeared on a recent episode of “The Breakfast Club” (via Rolling Stone) and said: “I deeply regret saying anything about Dave Chappelle to the press. I want to say that I’m sorry for that.” Carmichael previously gave interviews to Esquire and GQ in which he criticized Chappelle’s legacy of making jokes about transgender people. Carmichael now noted that his frustration with Chappelle had only to do with the comedian repeatedly making jokes about the same topic and not the morality of the jokes themselves.
Carmichael called Chappelle “brilliant” and “a bright light in a dying industry,” noting that Chappelle is “more important than ever before” because stand-up comedy is dominated by comedians “just posting clips of them doing crowd work online and calling it art, and it’s not art.”

A motley crew of criminals gets more than they bargained for when the 12-year-old ballerina they kidnapped for a $50 million ransom turns out to be a bloodthirsty vampire in Abigail, the latest film from the Radio Silence trio of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella. With Abigail recently having its world premiere in New Orleans at the Overlook Film Festival ahead of its April 19th theatrical release via Universal Pictures, Daily Dead had the chance to talk with Matt and Tyler before the world premiere to discuss the vampire and crime film influences behind their horror heist genre mashup, filming in the historic (and potentially haunted) Glenmaroon House in Ireland, working with a star-studded ensemble, and the full-circle emotions of screening Abigail in New Orleans after shooting their first feature in the Big Easy more than a decade ago.

Jerrod Carmichael expressed some regrets over his recent criticism of Dave Chappelle — not his actual disappointment with the comedian for leaning heavily on jokes about trans people, but that he aired those grievances to the press.
On The Breakfast Club Tuesday, Carmichael sported a bit of a grin as he delivered a classic kind of non-apology apology, saying, “I deeply regret saying anything about Dave Chappelle to the press. I want to say that I’m sorry for that.”

Jerrod Carmichael is addressing criticism he’s received over a joke made in his new HBO series.
In a recent episode of the Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, the comedian said:
“My boyfriend, he makes me smarter, he makes me read. I have so many books. Realistically I’m not gonna read all those books. He knows that. But the fact that I bought them says I love you. They’re little monuments around my apartment, just like, ‘Look at this book from Amazon that I’m never gonna read.’”
He then added, “I sometimes joke to him that our relationship is like that of a slave and a master’s son — who, like, teaches me how to read by candlelight.”
In the episode, which was during a live stand-up show, the joke seemed to fall flatter than Carmichael expected, with some people in the audience groaning and hissing. “Yeah, he...

Never let it be said that "Bones" was above using its weekly murder investigation format to put its heroes in highly improbable situations for a laugh. In point of fact, the show's writers seized every excuse they could contrive to push Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) out of their element, whether that meant going undercover at a circus or entering the squared circle as part of an episode that was itself an irreverent "Simpsons" Easter egg hunt. 10 bucks say you can already guess what happened when the Jeffersonian crew found themselves looking into the apparent murder of a professional ballroom dancer in season 8, episode 10, "The Diamond in the Rough."
Sure enough, faster than you can argue that "Strictly Ballroom" is Baz Luhrmann's second-best movie (never let it be said that I myself am above contriving things for my own purposes), Bones and Booth dust off...

In John Hughes' 1985 teen dramedy "The Breakfast Club," five teenagers are locked in their school library on a Saturday as punishment for a variety of on-campus transgressions. The teens are lucky that their cruel headmaster, Mr. Vernon (Paul Gleason), isn't entirely attentive, as his periodic absences allow them to talk, bond, and come to understand their prejudices about each other. By the end of the day, the five teens -- Andrew, Claire, Brian, Allison, and John -- may have become friends. More than anything, they understand a lot more about who they are.
John Bender (Judd Nelson) is the troublemaker of the group, and he will reveal his uncaring attitude comes quite directly from having an abusive father. He also deflects a lot of negativity through humor, and it will be he who suggests the other four learn how liberating it is to deliberately break rules. Naturally, he also comes to detention with some weed,...

Molly Ringwald, star of 1980s hit The Breakfast Club, has revealed she only rewatched the movie recently, and was jarred by some of the themes that were glossed over at the time.
Ringwald played Claire Standish, nicknamed “Princess,” one of five disparate school students grouped together during a weekend detention period, in the movie, written and directed by John Hughes, which debuted in 1985. Her co-stars included Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall, with Paul Gleason as the school’s authoritarian vice-principal.
Ringwald told The Times of London she sat down to watch the movie with her 21-year-old daughter, actress Mathilda Gianopoulos:
“I only rewatched The Breakfast Club, which came out in 1985, because Mathilda wanted to see it with me. There is a lot that I really love about the movie but there are elements that haven’t aged well — like Judd Nelson’s character, John Bender,...

Music mogul Diddy and Usher were very close, as the Bad Boys CEO was instrumental in helping the singer’s career. But at one point, it was alleged that Usher went to Diddy for help. And Diddy refusing to help the star caused a temporary rift between the two.

Usher isn’t hurting for money nowadays. According to Investopedia, the multi-platinum artist is worth $180 million. He’s managed to maintain his longevity nicely, having earned $40 million doing shows in Las Vegas. He’s often attributed much of his success to Diddy, who helped develop Usher’s talents during his teenage years.

Nearly 40 years after its release, The Breakfast Club star Molly Ringwald has weighed in about how parts of the classic John Hughes movie haven’t held up.
In a recent interview with UK’s The Times, Ringwald spoke about reexamining the film with a modern perspective while rewatching it with her daughter Mathilda.
“There is a lot that I really love about the movie but there are elements that haven’t aged well — like Judd Nelson’s character, John Bender, who essentially sexually harasses my character,” Ringwald said. “I’m glad we’re able to look at that and say things are truly different now.”

The Real Ghostbusters had only concluded six years before its direct sequel premiered in 1997. And, as with many things geared toward children at the time, there was this trend of overselling the product to bring in both eyes and money. Hence the title of Extreme Ghostbusters (hereinafter referred to as Xgb). The revival never quite lived up to the marketing hype, however, this cartoon was also no lightweight. It proved to be a worthy successor that was neither afraid of no ghost nor afraid to push the envelope in ways its predecessor could not.
After a few blissful years of zero paranormal activity in Xgb, the supernatural has returned in full force to haunt New York City and the rest of America. So who you gonna call to handle this new flux of specters, ghouls and other uncanny creatures? Well, not the Ghostbusters. The original team understandably disbanded after fulfilling their mission.

Variety will honor Molly Ringwald with the Variety Creative Vanguard Award at the Miami Film Festival on Saturday, April 6. The award will be for her outstanding career achievements, earning acclaim from critics and audiences alike.
Ringwald will participate in a Q&a about her extensive work in film and TV with Variety Senior Awards Editor Clayton Davis.
“It’s important to remember that before Molly Ringwald was the iconic young star of John Hughes’ teen angst-driven comedies such as ‘Sixteen Candles,’ ‘Pretty in Pink’ and ‘The Breakfast Club,’ she first starred in Paul Mazursky’s contemporary update of Shakespeare’s ‘Tempest,’” said Steve Gaydos, Variety EVP of Global Content and Executive Editor. “This is important because the secret of Ringwald’s early success and career longevity is the simple fact she has always been one of American film and television’s most gifted and versatile actresses. Charithra Chandran is not in Season 3 of “Bridgerton,” the British star has confirmed, but she has a range of other projects coming up.
Chandran, who is of Indian heritage, will produce a reality TV series based on ancient Sanskrit-language text the “Kama Sutra.” While the text was primarily designed as an art of living guide, many of the film and TV interpretations of it have focused on its sexual aspects.
“I’m working on a reality TV show, which is inspired by the ‘Kama Sutra,’ [for] which I would be just behind the scenes. Justin Bieber was asked to join Usher’s Super Bowl halftime show, but declined. Usher says he understood the reasons, but didn’t elaborate on them.

In November of 1993, writer/director John Lafia (Child’s Play 2) unleashed Cujo Cocaine Bear (great punk band name) upon the world with Man’s Best Friend. In the movie, a Tibetan Mastiff named Max 3000 is released from a genetic research facility by a reporter named Lori (Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy) while trying to expose a company for their cruel experiments on animals. We eventually learn that while Max might look like the best boy ever, he has a lot more in common with Wesley Snipes’ Simon Phoenix character from Demolition Man than he does Lassie.
While in the lab’s care, Max has been experimented on and genetically enhanced with the DNA of a slew of dangerous animals. For example, if threatened he can camouflage himself with the colors of your garage and hide there like a chameleon before deciding to pop out and bite your dick off. He has super strength,...

It’s hard not to think of the 80s without thinking of Anthony Michael Hall. From Sixteen Candles to The Breakfast Club to Weird Science, he was part of many all-time great and formative comedies. As he grew we saw him take on darker roles. I’ll always love him as the mean boyfriend from Edward Scissorhands and even USA’s The Dead Zone. 2021 saw him take over the role of Tommy Doyle in Halloween Kills and made three words infamous. There’s even a new project that he’s apart of with Netflix titled Trigger Warning that sounds like a female version of Roadhouse. He’s consistently stayed working for over 40 years and has been impressive while doing it. And thankfully, he’s open to discussing it all.

John Hughes was the patron saint of adolescents who found great success with a series of hit comedies, most of them centering around the plight of teenagers. Yet how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as both a writer and director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hughes first came to the attention of Hollywood as a writer after penning “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Mr. Mom” (1983). That financially successful one-two punch landed him his first directing gig: “Sixteen Candles” (1984). A tender coming-of-age story about a teenage girl (Molly Ringwald) suffering one indignity after another on her sweet sixteen firmly established him as the premiere helmer of adolescent comedies, leading to “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Weird Science” (1985), and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986).
Yet Hughes also excelled at entertainments outside the classroom, including the road trip farce “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1987), starring...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"If you went into a movie called 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' and you were doing the stuff I was doing in that movie, would you be expecting while you were doing that movie that it was going to be huge?" Jim Carrey asked this to radio shock-jock Howard Stern in 1994 shortly after the actor's movie opened unexpectedly atop the box office. Stern bluntly responded with "No" but it was, in fact, a monster hit. It was one of three such hits that Carrey would be a part of that year, making it one of arguably the best years that any actor has had — from a commercial standpoint — in history.

If it weren’t for Molly Ringwald’s headshot landing on John Hughes‘ desk, the world might have never seen the now-classic film Sixteen Candles.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ringwald shared that she never had to audition for Hughes because their first collaboration was written with her in mind.
“He had gotten my picture from a stack of headshots from ICM, and he just had it up on his wall, and he wrote Sixteen Candles over a weekend, looking at my picture,” she told the late night host. “So, when it was time to cast it, he cast the girl in the picture.”
Ringwald starred alongside Anthony Michael Hall in Hughes’ 1984 film, before reuniting with both men for The Breakfast Club. The writer-director offered the actors the 1985 film when they finished filming Sixteen Candles, and the Riverdale actress said she immediately wanted to take on the part.
