New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features selections reflecting the month of April 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include telepathic plants, ecological horrors, and a lot of killer cats.
The Uncanny (1977)
Pictured: The Uncanny (1977)
Directed by Denis Héroux.
The Uncanny is a two-for kind of deal: it works for both National Pet Day (April 11) and Tell a Story Day (April 27). Here we have Peter Cushing‘s character talking at length about the evils of cats, with his three examples fleshing out this singular anthology. And while this film is often mistaken for an Amicus production, it was, in fact, made by The Rank Organisation. However, Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky was also a co-producer.

The late 80’s mostly pushed aside slashers for a return to potpourri poisons; creatures, monsters, zombies and mad scientists shared the spotlight in a bid to woo horror fans grown complacent with mere stabbing and stalking. Out of this stew grew The Kindred (1987), a mostly forgotten mélange that serves as the final (and best) calling card for the directing team of Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow (The Power). Bring your slickers and keep the first five rows clear; things are going to get very messy.
Distributed by FM Entertainment in early January, The Kindred brought in $2.4 million before shuffling off to a home video release from Vestron; some critics praised the effects and that’s about it. But for horror fans who missed it the first go around (pick me!), it offers a fast paced ride through groovy practical effects and a typically, um, heightened performance from Rod Steiger.

As Halloween grows nearer and Scream Factory prepares to break out the big guns over the next few months in the form of titles like Trick ’r Treat, Creepshow, and Candyman, the company is still busy putting out smaller and less universally beloved titles to round out the library of every obsessive horror fan. Our latest Scream Factory roundup runs pretty much the whole gamut: we have a modern classic, an undiscovered gem, and a pretty forgettable dud. The world, as they say, is a rainbow.
Once upon a time, I would have called William Malone’s 1999 remake of House on Haunted Hill one of the most underrated horror movies of the ’90s. But like so many other films that have the benefit of time and distance, a cult of fandom has developed around the remake in the almost two decades since it was released. The first film from Dark Castle Entertainment,...

In 1984, director Michael Winner unleashed the very weird Scream for Help. Not nearly as good as those two previous, fantastic films (and several others in his filmography), what Scream for Help does offer is an utterly bizarre window into the strangeness of 1980s filmmaking. Also written by Tom Holland (Fright Night), Scream for Help follows teenage girl Christie Cromwell who suspects that her stepfather Paul (David Allen Brooks) is attempting to murder her mother for her money.. As suave as Paul starts out, he can't trick the plucky girl, who's eager to see him gone (he did cause her parents...

"First he tried to kill mom. Now he's after me. But no one believes me!" Halloween may be in October, but Scream Factory is making September a month to celebrate all its own, as their impressive home media releases slated for that month continue with their announcement that Michael Winner's stepfather-centric horror film Scream For Help is coming to Blu-ray on September 18th:
From Scream Factory: "Scream For Help – the 1984 cult classic thriller from Director Michael Winner -- is screaming to Blu-ray for the first time this Sept!
Terror invades an upper-class New York community as 17-year old Christie Cromwell cleverly uncovers her stepfather's horrifying plot to murder her wealthy mother. She's on to him, yet no one will believe her because she's just a kid: smart, imaginative, maybe she's just taken a crazy idea to the limit. Suspense builds when a series of shocking events confirms her worst fears.

In regards to his filmic output, director Michael Winner was wildly inconsistent at his worst and wholly divisive at his best (and vice versa). The remarkable thing is that those two extreme opinions can be about the same film; some find the kinetic sleaze of Death Wish (1974) powerful and disturbing, others find its ham-fisted social grazing problematic and off-putting. But it was a big hit, so naturally Universal let him ride the satanic tide with The Sentinel (1977), a Good vs. Evil, Portal to Hell potboiler that warms this Fulci-loving heart three years before Lucio even set foot in New Orleans.
Given a limited release in January stateside, The Sentinel barely broke even on its $4 million budget, and the critics hated it, deeming it lurid, reprehensible trash. Which it is; but it’s also ridiculously entertaining and has a few truly haunting moments. Turns out Winner could do horror—and yet...
