Ah, the '80s! A time of neon leg warmers, cassette tapes, and some of the most gloriously over-the-top horror movie slashers ever to grace the silver screen. While the decade gave us iconic killers like Freddy and Jason, it also birthed a slew of lesser-known but equally thrilling slashers that have been gathering dust in the dark corners of horror history. These hidden gems are brimming with inventive kills, wild plot twists, and enough suspense to make your hair stand on end (and not just because of the hairspray).
So grab your VHS player, pop some popcorn, and let's dive into 10 forgotten and underated slashers of the '80s that still have some stabs left in them!

George A. Romero’s elite classic Dawn of the Dead turns 45 years old this year, while Zack Snyder’s remake approaches its own 20th anniversary. But the two different versions of Dawn of the Dead are far from the only two horror movies set inside shopping malls.
“Mall Horror” is basically its own subgenre, and below are two under-discussed gems in the shopping mall arena that are well worth your time as you celebrate the 45th anniversary of the greatest “Mall Horror” movie ever made – and the one that started it all…

While Germany wasn’t a significant contributor during the first revival of slasher movies, its few offerings are an interesting time capsule. These movies show how the country interpreted the subgenre during its postmodern era. Of all the homegrown German efforts from the early 2000s, The Pool (also known as Swimming Pool: Der Tod feiert mit) perhaps brings up the most nostalgia despite its vanishing act over the years. Boris von Sychowski’s vaguely remembered slasher didn’t make a huge splash back then, although that wasn’t from a lack of trying.
German slasher The Pool is openly set in Prague, yet the English dialogue, the rampant Hollywood movie clichés, and the generic pop-rock soundtrack all make American audiences feel more at home. The glaring Czech architecture and various accents, however, are constant reminders that the characters themselves are far from home. The adults and authority figures are either...

For years now, writer Simon Barrett has been involved with several of my favorite modern horrors, including You’re Next, the criminally underappreciated Blair Witch (2016), and A Horrible Way to Die, as well as The Guest. But now, Barrett is branching out creatively, directing his first feature Seance, which follows a group of young women at an elite prep school who are being murdered by a mysterious entity after a prank amongst several of the students goes horribly wrong.
During the recent press day for Seance, I had the opportunity to speak with Barrett about his directorial debut, and we also dug into some of our own geeky tendencies as horror fans throughout our conversation. Barrett also discussed the inspirations behind the story of Seance, the importance of being good to your characters when you’re writing and/or directing, working with his incredible cast, and more.

It’s a common misconception that women are only in horror films to scream. Not so – the genre has put women front and centre for decades, showing men a trick or two about conquering evil. In the terrifying new online seance chiller Host, a group of female friends are left to deal with a malevolent spirit, while the sole male cast member runs shrieking into the night. Here’s a collection of some of the best fright flicks featuring fantastic female ensemble casts. Ladies, your time is now!
We Summon The Darkness (2019)
Alexandra Daddario stars in this rollicking Satanic panic horror thriller, about a trio of female heavy metal fans who, during an after party in a secluded mansion, dabble in deviltry and literally raise Hell. At one point Daddario says to a man telling her to be careful, “You don’t think we can fend for ourselves?” You go girl!

The thing I miss the most about the heyday of the ’80s slasher movie is that there were so many of them that eventually filmmakers had to start finding ways to shake up the formula and continually introduce weirder and weirder stuff. That's not to say that all of these movies were necessarily "good," but that they managed to be distinctive within a sub-genre known for its sameness. For as good as horror is today—and we are in a really good place for horror—there is no one corner of the genre that is so prevalent as the slasher once was that inspires various permutations. We don't get a Sleepaway Camp or a Blood Rage much anymore. The reasons for this are ultimately positive and encouraging—the current crop of horror films are so vastly different from one another that we avoid this phenomenon—but it still makes me...

Where would the slasher genre be without some of the beloved and fail-safe stereotypes that we have all come to know and love? Summer camps, teenagers, tormented classmates that returned a decade later to exact horrific revenge. Oh yeah, also some coeds and a week of sorority hazing. That’s a good one too, which brings us to The Initiation.
The poster art is a bit deceiving. It’s way less gothic than you think. No castles or women in evening gowns. Think the 1980’s baby, and all the trappings that come with it. The dysfunctional rich debutante, the even more dysfunctional alcoholic rich mother, a handsome and intelligent young scientist and dream researcher, and some really serious hidden emotional baggage that’s inevitably going to come to an ugly head.
Enter Kelly Fairchild (Daphne Zuniga), a young and rich college student whose family...

One of the best things about horror film posters is the obligatory tagline. Some of them are catchy and increase your interest in watching the film, others are silly, some are unforgivably campy, and others are outright ridiculous. The best horror film poster blurbs, however, are typically a blend of all the aforementioned components. Many of our favorite taglines are almost a lampoon of themselves, but somehow, that has become part of the magic. It’s almost as if the worse the pun, the better the audience response. The heyday of the outlandish promo blurb was at its height when the slasher film was at its peak, but that’s not to say that contemporary horror cinema hasn’t brought us some dandies. With that in mind, we present to you 20 of our most favorite horror poster taglines from the 1970s to present. House "Horror has found a new home.

Hey horror fans. Sorry, I am a little late with these two days. Blogger, which is the service that hosts this blog site, crashed for two days and even worse it deleted a ton of work I had already wrote out in advance including days 17 & 18 of the 30 day horror challenge strikes back! So day 17 involves which character you would want to speak horror films with. I think it is pretty safe to say, most people are going to pick Randy from the Scream franchise, though he isn't my pick. After that we got day 18, character you would want to save from death. Haven't you seen that horror film where your favorite character, who you thought would live, gets it at the last minute. Remember in The Initiation, starring Daphne Zuniga, the one girl revealed that she was raped as a young teen. A rather unexpected moment for a slasher film...
