Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This movie is fairly dark
  • A man is crushed using a rock-crushing machine. Though his death is only implied, some blood is seen on the machine. Very disturbing.
  • In a jumpscare moment, a man's hand suddenly pops up through a hole in a wall, frightening a woman.
  • During a dinner scene, there are many disturbing foods, including a roasted boar, beetles, live eel-like creatures, eyeball soup, and monkeys' brains using monkey heads as bowls. Played for laughs, but is disgusting and hard to watch.
  • A villager tells Indy a creepy story about how the Thuggees came and kidnapped their children and their sacred stones.
  • Severed human fingers are shown draped around a statue of Kali (presumable a sacrifice of some kind). Blood can be seen on the statue.
  • There is a meal put on at a palace where disgusting dishes such as eyeball soup, snakes, insects and chilled monkey brains are served.
  • Indy is tortured by a voodoo doll. This is made all the more unsettling in that the act is perpetrated by a child who takes sadistic glee in causing him pain.
  • There is a scene with insects everywhere, crawling over the main characters.
  • A drugged guard suddenly jumps out at Willie and Short Round and hisses at them in a frightening voice.
  • A child begs for death.
  • A Thuggee is about to cut Short Round's throat however Indy stops him at the last second.
  • Mola Ram is very scary in general because he shouts frequently and has a very booming voice and a scary laugh plus a brutal look on his face.
  • Mola Ram (the prime antagonist) has an ornate headress with a shrunken head in it.
  • Some may find the scenes where Indy turns evil quite unsettling

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Men fall off a broken bridge into a river below, bouncing off of the canyon walls on the way down, where they are eaten by crocodiles (slightly implied). All we see are robes being torn up by the crocodiles and some blood in the water. In the same scene, the viewer follows Mola Ram as he falls down the cliff, bouncing off of it on the way.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • At the start of the movie somebody poisoned Indiana Jones's drink and there's a big fight as he tries to get the antidote to survive.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The scene where a man's heart get ripped out may be disturbing for young children.
  • The extensive scene where the sacrifices are made inside the cave with lots of bright red lighting is extremely disturbing, intense and graphic. There are a couple of moments where someone is slowly lowered towards a flaming pit of lava as they scream in agony. Another person in charge of the sacrifice holds a heart in his hand, and the heart lights on fire as the person below is killed.
  • Short Round uses a torch to burn Indy out of the trance after he was forced to drink the blood of Kali. He does the same thing to Maharaja in the final climax.
  • The sacrificial scenes are very scary, particularly the first in which a man's heart is lowered into a volcanic pit and burned. Intense.
  • Indiana Jones is forced to drink poison mixed with human blood.
  • Indy assumes that several of the Thuggees had skinned several people and hung their dead skin up in a window.
  • Children frequently scream in agony, as they are punished.
  • There is a scene where Indy, Willie and Short Round are all cornered on a rope bridge. Having no way out Indy cuts the bridge sending several of the villains to their deaths while putting himself, Willie and Short Round in danger of falling as well.
  • The child slavery is very disturbing, and even though Indy sets them free at the end, there are many disturbing scenes in the beginning where they are being whipped by the bad guys.
