Mo Amer in Mo.
Amer’s natural, seemingly effortless knack for connection long has been one of his clearest strengths, whether in his stand-up comedy or in his recurring role on Ramy. In Mo, he proves equally able to dig into the darker, sharper corners. His easy smiles and rambling jokes take on layers of anxiety and sorrow as the character wrestles with drug addiction, generational trauma and the everyday frustrations of trying to scrape by in a country that would prefer to forget he exists. As creator and real-life inspiration for Mo, Amer steeps the entire project in his own perspective and identity — but it’s his performance that ties the whole thing together as he embodies the vibrant, empathetic spirit of the show through his irresistible star turn. — Angie Han

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “What We Do in the Shadows” Season 4, prior to Season 4, Episode 10, “Sunrise, Sunset.”]
As the old saying goes, you know it’s a great season of TV when vampire partygoers playing hot potato with Sofia Coppola’s decapitated head doesn’t even rank as the most memorable scene.
“We got lucky,” showrunner and executive producer Paul Simms said of casting the Oscar-winning writer in the cold open of Episode 9, “Freddie,” along with her husband and lead singer of Phoenix, Thomas Mars. “They love the show. Both of them are big comedy fans in a way you wouldn’t expect.”
To start the scene, Coppola and Mars are seated with fellow indie director Jim Jarmusch at Nadja’s, a vampire nightclub named after its founder/owner, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou). Looking over the menu, Coppola inquires about the 5,000 “celebrity special,” and — as is fitting for the filmmaker — she’s shown, not told,...

This What We Do in The Shadows review contains spoilers.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 5
The child which crawled its way out of the abdominal cavity of Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) has reached that wild age where sitcom parents have to learn to jump a shark or lean into it. What We Do in the Shadows season 4 episode 5 “Private School,” bashes it in the nose with a ball peen hammer. Let that be a lesson.
Laszlo (Matt Berry) is in denial. As the ad hoc self-proclaimed caretaker of baby Colin, he feels responsible for its cultured evolution. Laszlo is putting on the brave face of a proud father, in full belief that the energy draining antics of the ever-energized young lad is the spark of something, anything, interesting. Berry puts his full and rapt focus on this conviction. It is as strong as his dedication to sex,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 3 of “Stranger Things,” including the finale.]
Another season of “Stranger Things” brings another slew of opportunities to drop pop culture references by avowed cinephiles, the Duffer Brothers. Set in 1985, Season 3 includes plenty of nods to the decade, in addition to various horror and sci-fi films that influenced the more monstrous elements from the Upside Down.
Here’s an episode-by-episode breakdown of all the references and homages in the third season, beyond the Eggo waffles and Dungeons & Dragons that fans already know and love. Unless the songs have particular significance to the story, they won’t be mentioned here but are included in this separate soundtrack post.
“Chapter One: Suzie, Do You Copy?” “War Games” (1983) – A popular trope in movies that involve high security or nuclear weapons, the real-life two-man rule (or two-keyed lock) shows up at the beginning of the Matthew Broderick hacker movie “War Games” when two soldiers are tasked...

Labor Day brought royal baby news early this morning — and the expected names are already rolling in.
Bookies are already offering odds on what Princess Kate and Prince William will name their third child — and Alice has come out on top, so far. British bookmakers Ladbrokes and William Hill cite the sweet name at the top of their lists.
Elizabeth and James are runner-ups on William Hill, while Arthur and Victoria snagged the second spot on Ladbrokes.
Kensington Palace confirmed on Monday that the royals, both 35, are expecting baby number three. They are already parents to Prince George, 4, and 2-year-old Princess Charlotte.

Princess Diana is known for her fascinating life as a British royal, but she led an equally interesting life before marrying Prince Charles. Diana grew up in an affluent household in Norfolk, England. Her father's family, the Spencers, were closely allied with the British royal family, while her maternal grandmother, Ruth Roche, was a member of the court of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. After being homeschooled by her governess, Gertrude Allen, she began her formal education at Silfield Private School in Gayton, Norfolk, before moving to an all-girls boarding school when she was nine. In 1973, she joined her sisters at West Heath Girls' School, and although she didn't excel in academics (she failed her O-levels twice), she was a talented athlete. The telemovie Redfern Now: Promise Me almost certainly won.t be the final chapter in the saga of the mostly indigenous residents of inner-city Sydney.

Presenting “Love Always,” a recurring feature in which we pay tribute to the women who helped shape our views on pop culture.
This time we pay a 51st birthday tribute to Phoebe Cates. She retired from acting 20 years ago (save for a brief bit in her pal Jennifer Jason Leigh‘s 2001 The Anniversary Party) to raise her family with husband Kevin Kline, but she gave us a couple of iconic moments in the 80′s that will live forever.
Here are seven reasons why I will Love Always Phoebe Cates.

Chris Lilley is developing a snowboarding mockumentary special.
The Summer Heights High creator is working with Australian blogger David Thorne, known for his spoof letters and emails, on the one-off show.
Thorne told the Sydney Morning Herald: "It's a one-hour mockumentary about two individuals who embrace the snowboarding culture to the fullest extent but do not know how to snowboard.
"Chris and I first met a couple of years ago at a function and share a similar sense of humour. In his words, 'We're like peas in a pod - except I'm talented and famous'."
Cold Feet will be broadcast in Australia and the UK in September.
It is expected to air on BBC Three in the UK. The show may be renamed due to the classic 1990s drama of the same name.
Thorne found fame online in 2008, after he attempted to pay an overdue bill with a drawing of a spider.

As Jonah From Tonga arrives on BBC Three, we salute the meticulously observed characters of Australian comic Chris Lilley…
Feature
A sixteen year old Queen Bee, a disruptive Tongan teen, a juvenile offenders’ officer in her sixties, feckless teenage twins, a flamboyant drama teacher, a pushy Japanese mother… Chris Lilley puts on a wig, an outfit (and sometimes, a controversial bit of face paint) and becomes them all.
Watch him in costume and there’s no sense that Lilley is anyone but the character he’s playing. Other comedy drag acts - Little Britain’s Emily and Florence, for instance - might trade on the physical disconnect between the actor and persona, but Lilley is no pantomime dame. In his glossy brunette wig and school dress, the thirty-nine year old man disappears and he simply is hair-flicking, doe-eyed teen Ja’mie King. Change the wig, accent and mannerisms, and he becomes a naughty,...

Private school girl Ja'mie King, the deliciously bitchy comedy creation of Aussie mockumentary genius Chris Lilley, returns to British TV screens this week.

Lilley previously told Digital Spy: "It's along the same lines as my other shows, it's a mockumentary style and I'll play the characters.
"I want to keep as much of the show as possible a secret, but if you've loved my last three shows, this is part four."
The comic actor recently announced plans for a new show centred around his Summer Heights High character Jonah Takalua.

As promised, following our recent one-on-one interview with the multi-talented actor/director/writer of Ja’Mie Private School Girl’s (Airing Sundays at 10:30Pm on HBO) comes part two with everybody’s favorite Australian export Chris Lilley. See for yourself, after the jump.
Are you glad that there was less social media when you were younger?
Chris Lilley: No, I’m not glad. I would’ve liked it. I think it’s kind of cool. I guess there’d be pressure to sort of create your set up online – your persona and image and who you are. I sort of have it now with Instagram and Facebook and expectations to post stuff all the time. I don’t know. I’ve met heaps of people through Twitter and Facebook – or you meet people and they track you down and you end up chatting, and that’s how you...

Chris Lilley's latest mockumentary series, Jai'me: Private School Girl, premiered last night on HBO (and you can watch the first episode for free on YouTube), giving fans of the Australian comedian what they've been demanding for years now: more Ja'mie King. Ja'mie is a character played by Chris Lilley himself — first in 2005's We Can Be Heroes, and later in 2007's Summer Heights High — a 17-year-old high schooler who is a total mean girl. And she's won the Internet's heart by being a walking, hair-flipping catchphrase in a show that's really all about her. She's trendy, boy-crazy, a little psychotic, and also throws around Aussie slang (and a bit of her own vocab) like it's confetti. In order to gear up for this new dose of teen linguistics, here's a handy field guide to some of her favorite words. bogan noun \ˈbau̇-ˈgən\ Someone who’s trashy. A mutant...

Katy Perry was surprised on Australian radio by a special guest appearance from Chris Lilley's comedy character Ja'mie King.

Perry spoke to Ja'mie on the phone and was presented with a special gift of her own Private School Girl outfit, during a segment on The Kyle and Jackie O Show.
"I love you so much Ja'mie," said Perry, who was clearly a fan of the Aussie comedy character. "And I have a question for you. Do you think I'm quiche?"

Character actor specialist, Chris Lilley, initially introduced audiences to his over-achieving, relentlessly self-absorbed and superficial private school girl character, Ja.mie King on 2005.s We Could Be Heroes, as one of six unlikely contenders for Australian of the Year. He then plunged her into the unchartered territory of public school on his next series, Summer Heights High in 2007. Now, Ja.mie is the centre of attention in Ja.mie: Private School Girl. A co-production of ABC, BBC and HBO, the series premiered last night on ABC1 to a total audience, inclusive of regional ratings, of 1.27 million. Memorable quotes and buzz words from the show were already trending on Twitter shortly after the first episode aired; particularly the term .quiche. which Ja.mie uses to describe someone who is especially attractive, or in her words, .better than hot.. Some critics sang the Hillford Girls. Grammar School Captain.s praise, such as...

HBO knows what it’s getting you this Thanksgivukkah season: the premiere of Australian comedian Chris Lilley‘s new series, Ja’mie: Private School Girl. On November 24th, Lilley returns as Ja’mie King, the shallow, spoiled, just-smart-enough-to-know-where-to-cut rich bitch from Down Under, back in front of the (mockumentary) cameras as she’s about to graduate from her fancypants private high school. Ja’mie – pronounced “ja-may” – is a familiar sight to viewers of HBO’s eight-episode sitcom Summer Heights High and Lilley’s earlier We Can Be Heroes, which originally aired on the Sundance Channel. Lilley has delicate-enough features that, for seconds at a time, provided the lighting is right – that is, when you can’t see his five o’clock shadow – he could pass for an attractive 30-year-old woman playing at 16. He’s certainly nailed the prissy-horsey mannerisms of one. In Summer Heights High, Lilley’s absolutely fantastic in the role: Ja’mie is a hair-flipping...

Of all the distinct and hilarious characters Australian comedian Chris Lilley played between his 2008 show Summer Heights High and its follow-up, Angry Boys, mean girl Ja’mie King was the most memorable. The good news out of the land down under this weekend is that Lilley plans to resurrect the catty teen for a new show titled Ja'mie: Private School Girl. "Australia's favourite beyatch" will return for six half-hour episodes in which she will face "life-changing events" and "[take] on social media with a vengeance." Mastermind Lilley says he "can't wait to show everyone what Ja'mie's been up to," adding, "I find teenage girls endlessly funny, so being able to write for and play the meanest bitch in school has been so fun." Expect Private School Girl to air on HBO stateside and BBC Three in the UK later this year. So random.
