It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. Hughes wrote a script that truly reflected the life of an average teen,...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
After a number of bloated runtimes and technically inept entries, it’s something of a relief to watch Amityville Christmas Vacation (2022). The 55-minute film doesn’t even try to hit feature length, which is a wise decision for a film with a slight, but enjoyable premise.
The amusingly self-aware comedy is written and directed by Steve Rudzinski, who also stars as protagonist Wally Griswold. The premise is simple: a newspaper article celebrating the hero cop catches the attention of B’n’B owner Samantha (Marci Leigh), who lures Wally to Amityville under the false claim that he’s won a free Christmas stay.
Naturally it turns out that the house is haunted by a vengeful ghost named Jessica D’Angelo (Aleen Isley), but...

John Carpenter's 1992 film "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" was a departure for the director. Throughout the 1980s, Carpenter directed many notable genre films that affected a direct and guileless style that roped in many fans and critics. His 1980s "hot streak" included "Escape from New York," "The Thing," "Christine," "Starman," and "Big Trouble in Little China." Although his 1987 film "Prince of Darkness" was nonsensical, it has many defenders, and his 1988 film "They Live" is now considered a seminal anti-establishment punk-rock text of the Reagan era.
That streak seems to have ended with "Memoirs," however. Although the film is slick, entertaining, and boasts some excellent special effects, many Carpenter fans felt a little off-put by the director's attempts to helm a comedic Chevy Chase vehicle. In "Memoirs," Chase plays a stock market guy who is accidentally exposed to an invisibility experiment. The film follows his travails as he adjusts to his lack of opacity,...

Roadside Attractions has snagged U.S. rights to the comedy Summer Camp, starring Diane Keaton (Annie Hall), Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell) and Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave), on which we were first to report. Written and directed by Castille Landon (Perfect Addiction), the film is slated for release in theaters on May 31.
Summer Camp tells the story of Nora (Keaton), Ginny (Bates), and Mary (Woodard), who have been best friends since being inseparable at summer camp. As the years have passed, they’ve seen each other less and less, so when the chance to reunite for a summer camp reunion arises, they all take it, some begrudgingly and others excitedly. Each of their lives might not be where they’d imagined, but one thing is for sure — Nora, Ginny, and Mary need each other, and summer camp reminds them why.

1985’s Fletch was directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Andrew Bergman. The film is an adaptation of the popular novels written by Gregory McDonald and brings a more comedic and dry approach to its titular character, Fletch, played by Chevy Chase. Fletch is an investigative journalist working the undercover beat as a homeless beach junkie as he tries to uncover the truth behind a kingpin-level drug ring that is looming over greater L.A. While undercover, Fletch is propositioned by a rich man called Alan Stanwick who claims to be dying of bone cancer to kill the man in his upper-class home so that his family can reap the benefits of his life insurance. In exchange, Fletch will receive $50,000 cash and a ticket out of the country.

Sam Mercer, who produced eight M. Night Shyamalan films starting with the spooky blockbuster The Sixth Sense, has died. He was 69.
Mercer died Feb. 12 at his home in South Pasadena after a battle with younger-onset Alzheimer’s, his wife, Tegan Jones, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Mercer was seen as an out-of-the-box hire when he joined Industrial Light & Magic in September 2015 to oversee and coordinate activities of the VFX giant’s studios in San Francisco, Vancouver, London and Singapore. However, he left the next year after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Mercer began his career as a location manager on films including Stripes (1981), National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) and The Witches of Eastwick (1987).

Sam Mercer, who produced seven M. Night Shyamalan films including The Sixth Sense, headed Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic and was location manager on several classic 1980s pics, has died. He was 69.
His wife Tegan Jones told Deadline that Mercer died February 12 of younger-onset Alzheimer’s.

Throughout its six season run, "Community" encountered a genuinely impressive set of challenges. First of all, series creator, Dan Harmon, was kicked off his own show, which considering his behavior wasn't all that shocking. An admitted heavy drinker, Harmon also became notorious for what The Hollywood Reporter referred to as his "eleventh-hour rewrites, or 'Harmon passes,'" which he would foist upon the cast and crew during filming. Harmon also fell out with star Chevy Chase, and the show was known for its long shooting days and erratic schedule. No wonder Alison Brie described the "Community" set as "frantic, frenetic, chaotic"
Then, there was the constant threat of cancellation, which loomed over "Community" until the show was actually canceled by NBC after its fifth season. Yahoo's then-new streaming service, Yahoo! Screen, picked up the show for its sixth and final season that seemed destined to fail. And fail it did.

The ever-glamorous Christie Brinkley posted a decidedly unglamorous photo on social media — an image that showed her recovering from a procedure to remove skin cancer near her left eye.
“The good news for me is we caught the basal cell Carcinoma early, she wrote on Instagram (see the post below). “And I had great Doctors that removed the cancer and stitched me up to perfection like an haute couture Dior. The good news for you is that all of this can be avoided by being diligent with your sun protection!”
The longtime model and part-time actress, who had a memorable role in the 1983 comedy Vacation, said she was there for her daughter’s routine checkup and asked a doctor at the last minute to examine “a little tiny dot I could feel as I applied my foundation.” Good idea.

It’s Cape Fear meets ‘The Burbs in director John Schlesinger’s Pacific Heights. Although you might be fooled by Hanz Zimmer’s score, which sounds a lot more like you’re watching Sexy Beetlejuice than a ’90s thriller. This is pure irony, of course, considering the film stars Beetlejuice himself, Michael Keaton, as a conman who is six feet from the edge and thinking maybe doing murder isn’t so far down.
For those of you arguing silently in your heads that Pacific Heights is not a horror movie, let me go ahead and agree with you. It’s a pure thriller. But imagine this for a moment; imagine somewhere out there is a fresh-off Batman Michael Keaton, sitting in a dark room twirling both a razor blade and a large cockroach through his fingers like some sort of emo fidget spinner, plotting you and your significant other’s demise.

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.

If there is one death that hit "Bones" fans hard, it was the death of Lance Sweets. Played by John Francis Daley, the character was killed off rather brutally in the show's season 10 premiere. That left everyone else to pick up the pieces, namely his on-again, off-again, girlfriend Daisy, who happened to be pregnant with his unborn child. Carla Gallo, the actress behind Daisy, had some thoughts on what she would have liked for the characters. In the end, it didn't go her way.
Back in 2014, Gallo spoke with Give Me My Remote about Daisy's relationship with Sweets, particularly in light of the show killing off the character. For Gallo, it seemed to be bittersweet as Daisy was the last woman Sweets loved, but they didn't get to be together in the end. That is what she truly wanted, even if the powers that be weren't planning on going that direction.

"Bones" fans were delivered a crushing blow when FBI Psychologist Lance Sweets was killed off. Not only did John Francis Daley's fan-favorite character die, but he was beaten to death by a Navy Seal in a parking garage. It was a brutal send-off for a character who was a staple of the show for seven seasons. In many cases, an actor leaving a show after so much time would be met with a great deal of shared emotion from the cast and crew. That's not exactly how it went down for Daley on his last day.
In a 2014 interview with TVLine, Daley discussed his character's departure from the long-running Fox TV show. The actor explained how his final day of filming went down and, unfortunately, it wound up being a very lonely experience for him. Much like the character's send-off, the actor's last day was pretty brutal. Here's what...

John Francis Daley and his writing/directing partner Jonathan Goldstein are not exactly what you might call household names just yet, although they've assuredly achieved "Oh neato, it's those two!" status. With writing credits on "Horrible Bosses" and "Spider-Man: Homecoming," plus their efforts as directors on "Game Night" and "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," Daley and Goldstein have cemented themselves as aficionados at merging cheeky humor with well-crafted action and wholehearted drama -- so much so that it's easy to forget Daley had a full-blooded acting career before he turned to filmmaking.
Fans of Paul Feig's "Freaks and Geeks" will recall that Daley played series lead Sam Weir on the cult classic teen dramedy series, kicking off his run as a television actor in the process. He would go on to have recurring roles on "The Geena Davis Show" and "Kitchen Confidential" before signing up to play Lance Sweets,...

John Hughes was the patron saint of adolescents who found great success with a series of hit comedies, most of them centering around the plight of teenagers. Yet how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as both a writer and director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hughes first came to the attention of Hollywood as a writer after penning “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Mr. Mom” (1983). That financially successful one-two punch landed him his first directing gig: “Sixteen Candles” (1984). A tender coming-of-age story about a teenage girl (Molly Ringwald) suffering one indignity after another on her sweet sixteen firmly established him as the premiere helmer of adolescent comedies, leading to “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Weird Science” (1985), and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986).
Yet Hughes also excelled at entertainments outside the classroom, including the road trip farce “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1987), starring...

It was a novel idea for MTV to reunite the cast of Jersey Shore in 2018 for a spinoff series, Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. Now, six years and seven seasons later, it’s time for the series to end.
Why it may be time for ‘Jersey Shore: Family Vacation’ to end
Jersey Shore: Family Vacation reunited the beloved cast of the original MTV juggernaut for the first time in six years. The idea was exciting, and catching up with the cast was entertaining.
However, as with any reality television series, Jsfv relies on storylines to entertain viewers. Season 6 delivered just what fans wanted: a fresh storyline celebrating Sammi Giancola’s return for the first time since 2012.
Giancola’s hotly anticipated return helped push Jersey Shore: Family Vacation‘s ratings through the roof. Deadline reported her debut episode drove MTV’s highest Thursday primetime share in more than two years, and it...

Illumination Entertainment is an animation studio that sort of came out of nowhere. Led by founder and producer Chris Meledandri, the studio jumped at the scene with "Despicable Me," which remains a rather fun family movie with a cool concept (created by "Klaus" director Sergio Pablos). It also gave the world the phenomenon that is the Minions — whether that's good or bad is up to the reader to decide.
In just 17 years, the studio has found a formula that it's honed to produce some of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time, with quite the high batting average thanks to their focus on hit songs and broad humor. After the enormous success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination took a hard left turn and gave us a movie that's unlike any it had done before — "Migration."

Consider, if you will, the swimming pool. While there are many flashy, outrageous exceptions based on eccentricity, wealth, and other factors, most swimming pools are of a fairly standard make. If a household backyard swimming pool has any character at all, it's because of what one puts into it: family and friends, memories, activities, and so on.
In this way, a swimming pool is akin to genre filmmaking. That is to say, the structure is fairly generic, the aesthetic is borrowed from bits and pieces of other models, and the entire enterprise seeks to serve a general function. Yet within those parameters, there can be room for variation, enough that the experience can be pleasantly unique.
That's the case with "Night Swim," the latest mid-budget offering from producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse label. Like the genre and exploitation gurus of days gone by, Blum has made a minor empire...

As we gather around the warmth of holiday classics, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation stands out as a perennial favorite, much like the twinkling lights on a well-trimmed tree. The Griswold family’s festive misadventures have become synonymous with seasonal cheer, and this is in no small part due to the remarkable cast that brought these characters to life. Let’s unwrap the reasons why these actors remain as timeless as the film itself. It's time to rent a Family Truckster, cue up Lindsey Buckingham's "Holiday Road," and hope our wife doesn't catch us checking out a mysterious hot babe in a sports car -- because it's time to rank all of the films in the "Vacation" franchise. Part family drama, part romantic comedy, part slapstick showcase, and 100 percent a showcase for Chevy Chase to prove why he's Chevy Chase and we're not, National Lampoon's "Vacation" series is home to some of the best bits in American comedy cinema.

In December 1989, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation opened at the box office. A bit less than a year later, Home Alone premiered. The two classic Christmas movies have a fair bit in common, including where they are set and who wrote them. John Hughes is responsible for penning both flicks. Did you know that Chris Colombus, the director of Home Alone, was originally attached to National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, though? Over the years, some fans have theorized that Colombus directed Home Alone out of spite when he felt forced to quit National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation because of Chevy Chase. That might not be the case, but there are a couple of elements of Home Alone that you could argue were digs at Chase’s character, Clark Griswold.
Chris Colombus quit ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ because of Chevy Chase
Chris Colombus was set to direct National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation in 1989. He was excited about the project.

If you like movies about empty-headed dips and their resentful families, then National Lampoon's "Vacation" movies certainly have you covered. Clark Griswold, played by Chevy Chase, is an exemplar -- perhaps the Ur-example -- of a clueless dad obsessed with fulfilling the typical American suburban dream despite a general lack of wit or competence. Clark claims to be an expert in everything, assuring his family that everything will be fine, and yet he displays no acumen or skill, and his family repeatedly witnesses him fail. We sympathize with Clark, however, as many of his failings are the result of bad luck; Clark isn't very good at traversing the daily onus of trivial nonsense, but the world seems cosmically hellbent on punishing him for his incompetence.

While they’ve already been popular since their initial release, Home Alone and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation seem to have gotten more intensely popular over the years. Every Christmas, channels broadcast the classics on repeat and streaming services offer them and other popular holiday films to view with family and friends. Now that nostalgia is lucrative, many new products have been released to merchandise on the movies’ continued rampant popularity. Nowadays, fans also love to analyze details they’ve never fully picked up on before and discuss the semantics of plot elements.
