X-Men 97 Nominated at the Gotham TV Awards, Predicted to Win Emmys - Main Image
The dust has barely settled since the season finale of X-Men ‘97 dropped, yet the accolades have already started to pour in.
The highly-acclaimed animated series is nominated in the Breakthrough Drama Series category at the 2024 Gotham TV Awards, with credit to Beau DeMayo as creator and Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Kevin Feige, Brad Winderbaum, and DeMayo as executive producers.
It is up against some serious competition in the category, versus Black Cake, Fallout, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and The Curse; however, it is worth noting that X-Men ‘97 is the only animated show to get a nomination in this year’s awards.
Nominees for the annual Gotham Awards are selected by a panel of film and television critics, journalists, and festival programmers, with the award ceremony to be held on June 4, 2024.

Folks, I love the X-Men. When I was a kid, Professor Charles Xavier and his band of mutant outcasts were at their peak with Chris Claremont’s X-Men bringing the super-team into the households of young comic book readers everywhere. Needless to say, I’m absolutely stoked by the recently released Disney Plus continuation of the 1990s animated TV series and have had X-Men on the brain 24/7 these days… seriously guys, I’ve worn this sweatshirt like every day since mid-March… And seeing as I’ve been let down by the last couple of movies I’ve covered on this show- Today I’m going to be selfish and talk about an entry in the Fox X-Men universe that I love. A film that breathed new life into the decaying franchise with exciting new timelines and a fresh filmmaker with bright eyes and a passion for comics. A movie that...

Hollywood star Patrick Stewart famously portrayed Professor X in the original X-Men franchise alongside a stellar ensemble cast. However, when the 2011 film First Class rebooted the series as a prequel, a fresh cast was introduced, with James McAvoy stepping into the role of Charles Xavier. And the now-83-year-old actor graciously supported McAvoy taking on the role of Professor X.
A still from the X-Men franchise
While he was more than pleased to see McAvoy embodying the younger version of his character, there were moments when Stewart admitted to feeling a bit unsettled by the sight of the 44-year-old actor inhabiting the iconic role he had portrayed for years.

When Tatiana Maslany was announced to be starring as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk, Marvel fans were excited about another talented actress playing a popular Marvel character. However, when the trailers and promotional material for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law were released, fans were concerned with the forced slapstick comedy and the show’s handling of the fourth-wall-breaking trait of the character.
Tatiana Maslany plays the titular character in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
The show ultimately was criticized by fans despite receiving good reviews from critics. Fans’ concerns came true and it is considered one of the worst entries in the MCU. Instead of owning up to the show’s failure, Maslany honed in on how the show itself predicted the criticism that was about to emerge.

One of the most beloved and long-running British Sci-Fi TV shows may be setting up the return of a fan-favorite character in a spin-off series on Disney+.
This has been the plan from the start, that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who production era will feature multiple spin-off series and movies.
The newest Doctor Who era has Ncuti Gatwa taking the reigns as the pivotal character in the show, aka Doctor Who, and bringing a new, fresh take.
This is what makes the Doctor Who universe last as long as it has, as every couple of years, the Doctor and other characters on the show will get a revamp with new actors. This also means that older stories and plots can be revisited with new ideas and even newer and sometimes old faces.

As the ’80s came to a close, so too did the first wave of the slasher cycle. While they would continue to be produced into the next decade, 1989 was the last gasp of a dying genre. Returning franchises and hopeful upstarts alike struggled to make an impact. We all know you can never really kill a slasher, but it would take Scream‘s reinvention of the concept in 1996 to renew broad interest.
Cutting Class, another ’89 entry in the subgenre, marked the directorial debut — and, as it turned out, sole directorial effort — from Rospo Pallenberg, who notably co-wrote Excalibur, contributed uncredited rewrites on Exorcist II: The Heretic, and served as a “creative associate” on Deliverance. Despite his pedigree, Pallenberg did not write the script; that was the work of Steve Slavkin, who would go on to create Nickelodeon’s pivotal series Salute Your Shorts.

It’s a huge list that singles out 310 nominees across 33 categories including some standouts of awards season like films All of Us Strangers and The Color Purple and buzzy TV shows Fellow Travelers starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey and The Last of Us toplined by Pedro Pascal. Beyoncé’s name is also in the mix, thanks to special recognition for her concert documentary, Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce from AMC Theatres. It’s not a new experience for the superstar as she was moved to tears in 2019 while accepting GLAAD’s Vanguard Award alongside Jay-Z.

‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ was one of the most anticipated MCU series, but it faced mixed reception upon release for valid reasons. Firstly, despite each episode costing around $25 million, totaling $225 million, the show’s CGI effects were lackluster. While it’s understandable for the whole character to be CGI, She-Hulk often looked out of place.
The second major criticism focused on the writing. Despite featuring cameos, jokes, mindless fun, and meta-humor, the series struggled with a vapid and flat storyline that contributed little to the broader MCU. The inclusion of a twerking scene also sparked divided opinions.
Rumors about a second season for ‘She-Hulk’ circulated in the summer of 2023, with some suggesting development would start after the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike. This raised eyebrows, considering that other better-received series with more content had not received a second season. The desire for more ‘She-Hulk’ seemed somewhat far-fetched in comparison.

The worst thing that could possibly happen to a Doctor Who fan is for the show to be cancelled again. Or for it to be broadcast again. Depends who you ask, really.
Despite the advent of the 15th Doctor and the anticipation that brings, there are nagging doubts abroad concerning the show’s future. And that’s fair enough, really. Some fans are just naturally pessimistic, some remember previous crushed hopes around Doctor Who’s wilderness years, and some just look at the state of TV streaming and feel that pessimism is a fairly realistic outlook. It’s also not unreasonable to be concerned that David Tennant is kicking around somewhere, especially given that it was raised by the host during Gatwa’s recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
Then there are the folk who simply don’t like Russell T Davies’ writing on Doctor Who. A previous line...

It was reported last month that Nicholas Hoult would be playing Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy, but writer/director James Gunn didn’t initially comment on the casting as he has in the past.
James Gunn has finally broken his silence on Instagram, explaining that he hadn’t said anything until now because Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor deal wasn’t officially finalized until just a few days ago. Time to break out the razor.

Martin Scorsese has cancelled his trip to the Marrakech International Film Festival at the eleventh hour, which he was due to attend as the special honorary guest of its 20th edition.
The director is a long-time supporter of the Moroccan festival, attending it five times since its creation in 2021.
He is also a close friend of its director Mélita Toscan du Plantier, who has been a driving force behind the event ever since the sudden death in 2003 at the Berlin Film Festival of her husband Daniel du Plantier, who founded the festival.
No reason was given for the last minute cancellation but sources close to the festival said the director had remained at home in New York for personal reasons.
As well as participating in this year’s 20th edition celebrations, Scorsese had also agreed to take on the role of patron of the sixth edition of the Atlas Workshops.

Netflix India has released some really good content this year, and the most prominent show from the streaming giant is Kohrra. Other than this Punjab based Netflix India Original; Class, Friday Night Plan, Choona, Guns & Gulaabs, and Jaane Jaan are some of the latest additions to the Netflix India lineup. Khufiya, directed by the famous Vishal Bharadwaj, is a new inclusion that, by the looks of it, is a spy thriller set in post-liberalization India. Vishal Bharadwaj also dropped a whodunnit web series Charlie Chopra and the Mystery of the Solang Valley, and we think the filmmaker is on a roll to be coming out with back-to-back work that will further diversify his filmography.

Even though the Screen Actors Guild strike is not officially over, negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) are on the verge of bringing this whole debacle to an end. In the meantime, the Hollywood machine is starting to crank back to full power with the Writers Guild of America officially back at work. Though members of SAG continue to strike, there are some productions allowed to return to work under SAG-AFTRA's Network Code. That's why late night talk shows with Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers and more returned this week, and soon "Saturday Night Live" will join their ranks.

The Spanish series Elite has its remake, in this case, from India with Class, a series directed by Ashim Ahluwalia who tells us the story of three students from a poor district in Delhi who go to study in an elitistic high school in town, with the subsequent conflicts, adventures and murders.
It comes with the same structure and in the telling of the story the same premise. It justifies its change (a fire that makes the three students go to the expensive high school) and transports the Spanish Class to India.
Lots of you might say that plot-wise, you would rather settle for the original version and as for boldness, you would surely settle for the original which knew how to make use of its sexier side. In Class we have more social inequalities, less thriller and intrigue and more social discourse.
As always, it is a matter of...

It’s a new generation of TV tastes.
A new study conducted by the Center for Scholars & Storytellers at UCLA confirmed that modern teenagers prefer to watch content that covers real-world issues like tense family dynamics or social justice, as opposed to aspirational content about being rich or famous a la “Gossip Girl.”
In a July study, 662 teenagers aged 13 through 18 from across the United States participated in the UCLA project. The study, called “Css Teens and Screens 2022, #Authenticity,” found that 4.4 percent of Gen Zers sought “aspirational content” whereas 21 percent preferred to “see real-life issues that impact society.” The top choice for teens was to “have fun and escape while watching content” at 37.8 percent of responses.
The recent findings directly contrast the early to mid-2000s research that fame and financial success were the top-ranked preferences for adolescents. Today, teens now want stories about “hope, lives unlike their own, family, and friendships.
