Threequels can often be a daunting undertaking for even the most accomplished of directors, and even for franchises with decent first two installments. Candyman 3: Day of the Dead takes a fairly offensive stab at the Mexican holiday, while Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III doesn’t live up to the pre-release marketing hype about it being ‘banned’ and ‘the most controversial movie ever made’. It was neither. Even Scream 3, despite not necessarily being bad per se, is a low point considering how strong the first two movies are. On the flip side though, George Romero’s Day of the Dead is a solid follow-up to both Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, while Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead threequel Army of Darkness is a total blast. So, after Hostel: Part II grossed significantly less than the hit opening chapter, did that put any notions...

"Evil Dead" fans had to wait a full decade between movies following the release of Fede Álvarez's 2013 entry in the long-running horror franchise. It seems the powers that be have no interest in making anyone wait that long again. To that end, we've learned that Francis Galluppi ("The Last Stop in Yuma County") has been tapped to write and direct a new movie set within the universe of Sam Raimi's original 1981 horror classic.
According to Deadline, Galluppi developed the idea and brought it to Raimi's team. They sparked to it and now it's officially in the works. No plot details have been revealed but it is described as an original story set within the "Evil Dead" universe. There's also no word yet on casting or anything like that -- meaning, it's unclear if any familiar characters will be included in this new installment. Rami had this to say...

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

Wattpad Webtoon Studios has hired 10 Cloverfield Lane screenwriters Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken to write a TV series adaptation of the webtoon I’m the Grim Reaper – and Deadline reports that legendary genre filmmaker Sam Raimi is on board to executive produce the show alongside Zainab Azizi and I’m the Grim Reaper creator Grave Weaver, who has a say in the development process.
I’m the Grim Reaper has the following synopsis: When Scarlet finds herself doomed to eternal punishment in Hell for a sinful life she can’t even remember, Satan himself offers her a deal: return to Earth and kill one marked sinner per day…as his Grim Reaper! Using the power of Hell, Scarlet quickly learns the ropes of being a reaper: bring in one sinner a day, regardless of their sins, and avoid the ninth circle herself. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. Ask Bruce Campbell, and he’ll tell you he’s “sick of over-trained heroes. I’m really bored with that. Guys that are just ripped to shreds and, you know, full of skills. That’s boring to me. Give me the mechanic that picks up a weapon, you know? Now I’m interested. That’s my hero. That could be me.”
Ash Williams of the Evil Dead franchise is that hero. Part of the lasting appeal of the best character Bruce Campbell has ever played is that the audience can see themselves in him, like if they were pressed into fighting an army of Deadites, they could take up the mantle, the chainsaw, the boomstick, and mow down wave after wave of the undead masses.
He is a man that should have been an A-List superstar and in the eyes of his fanbase he is…. which is all that really matters in the end.

Netflix has taken worldwide rights on the horror-thriller “Don’t Move,” a new genre entry from producer Sam Raimi.
The project is led by Kelsey Asbille, breakout on the FX anthology series “Fargo” and “Yellowstone,” alongside frequent Ryan Murphy player and “The Big Short’ star Finn Wittrock.
It follows a seasoned serial killer who injects a grieving woman with a paralytic agent while the two of them are isolated deep in the forest. As the agent gradually takes over her body, she must run, hide, and fight for her life before her entire nervous system shuts down.
Filmmaking team Brian Netto and Adam Schindler directed the film, having previously delivered the Quibi serial “50 States of Fright.” T.J. Cimfel and David White of “Intruders” wrote the script.
CAA Media Finance and Capstone brokered the deal with Netflix, whose film vertical was just taken over by veteran producer Dan Lin. The streamer...

There’s Only One Reason You Need to be Super Hyped up for ‘Alien: Romulus’ and it’s Not Ridley Scott
Alien: Romulus dropped its first teaser this week giving viewers a glimpse of the horrors that await them on a space station swarmed with one of the deadliest alien species. The upcoming film is the seventh installment in the Alien franchise (excluding the crossover movies), which began with 1979’s Alien directed by Ridley Scott.
Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine in Alien: Romulus
While fans might be excited about the project because of its connection to Scott’s films in the franchise, the acclaimed director only serves as a producer this time. Instead, director Fede Álvarez, who is known for his work on some of the best horror films of the past decades, is helming the project. Here is why Fede Álvarez is the key factor behind the hype for Alien: Romulus.

Sunday wasn’t just St. Patrick’s Day, it was also Kurt Russell’s birthday — and the Halloweenies think that’s worth celebrating. Don’t forget he also played the great Sheriff Franklin Hunt in 2006’s Bone Tomahawk, one of our favorite films of the 2010s, and yet also one of our first one-off Rentals in our Patreon, The Rewind.

Malaga, Spain — “The Chapel,” from “Piggy” director Carlota Pereda, Celia Rico’s competition title “Little Loves,” loved by a lot of critics, and “Free Falling,” produced by “Society of the Snow’s” J.A. Bayona and that film’s producer Belén Atienza, looked like three of the hottest tickets at this week’s Malaga market and Spanish Screenings which rated as the most upbeat in years.
Most all sales agents on the films – focusing on titles from Spain and Latin America – whose ranks are now swelled by Antonia Nava’s Neo Art International, forecast or saw deal traction on more than one title or a broad slate of films.
“Malaga was great for our movies,” said Latido Films’ Antonio Saura.
“For us, it’s been the best Spanish Screenings of the last years,” reported Luis Recart at Bendita Film Sales.

Maverick film making as shown in the work of Norman J. Warren, the brilliant burned-out Michael Reeves and others is hard to come by. The French based an entire now-classic group of films known as The New Wave of the sixties. Scripts were often not complete, or bare ideas, ad hoc sets, lack of money, filming on the run with camera angles, cut and in some cases non-professional actors. This can yield some fascinating results on screen giving new talent in from and before the camera a chance to shine. It is unfair to compare a film like Gav Chuckie Steele’s The Shadow of Death with something iconic nor will I do that, yet the film is about telling a story making this appear to be ‘slapped together.’
This film tries very hard to tell not one but two stories that are only one story leading up to the...

Malaga — Opening last Friday with “Dragonkeeper,” also in competition, Spain’s Malaga Festival, its biggest dedicated event for movies from Spain and Latin America, is studded by latest films by Isaki Lacuesta – “Saturn Return,” reportedly fun, broad audience and radical – David Trueba – “The Good Man,” small scale but almost certainly ingratiating – and Antonio Chavarrías’ “Holy Mother,” about an extraordinary real life female figure in Spain’s 9th century Reconquista.
Also in the running is “Rest in Peace,” from notable Argentine writer-director Sebastián Borensztein (“Chinese Takeaway”).
All are front-runners for some kind of award next Saturday. Prominent also is a bevy of first or second features, featuring from Spain three titles from women directors – gender abuse drama “The Snows,” “Nina,” reportedly a Western set in a northern Spanish town, and tragi-comedy “We Treat Women Too Well” – plus a clutch of debuts from Latin America.

An expanded version of writer/director Ken’ichi Ugana’s 2021 short film Visitors, Visitors (Complete Edition) is probably the strangest feature to play at this year’s FRomford Horror Film Festival. And at sixty-one minutes, including credits, Visitors (Complete Edition) is probably the shortest as well. In other words, it’s a lot of weirdness packed into a short running time.
It all begins innocently enough as three friends Haruka, Nana, and Takanori drop in on their bandmate Souta who has dropped out of touch with them and everyone else for that matter. They find his house covered in old newspapers, fliers and other assorted papers. But when he finally answers the door he invites them in for tea. That was mistake number one. Sam Raimi’s recent stint with the MCU, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was a big let-down for the fans. Raimi rose to prominence by directing one of the most popular superhero movies of our time, the original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. While his first two films are celebrated widely, the third Spider-Man film is often condemned as the worst film among the web-slinger’s films. The film’s failure could be attributed to the rushed inclusion of multiple villains.
Sam Raimi with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst on the sets of Spider-Man
Among the three villains was Topher Grace’s version of Venom, which was absolutely hated by the audience. Interestingly, Raimi had no interest in including Venom in his trilogy. The fan-favorite villain got his chance at redemption when Sony made the standalone Venom movie, with Tom Hardy portraying the character.

In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) last year, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. It looks like they’re on track to do just that, as earlier this week it was announced that Sébastien Vaniček – who just made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Infested – has been hired to direct the next Evil Dead movie. Since Vermin happens to be nominated in two categories at this year’s César Awards, the website Konbini was able to catch up with Vaniček at a nominees’ dinner, and while talking with him they learned that he has...

The Evil Dead franchise will return with a brand new untitled spinoff movie, we learned earlier this week, and French filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček (Infested) is on board to direct.
We don’t know much of anything about this sixth installment in the Evil Dead film franchise at this time, but the website Konbini did manage to get some quotes from Vaniček.
For starters, it sounds like his take on The Evil Dead will be an experience in grueling terror, which has become a guarantee from the film franchise dating back to the beginning. The 2013 remake and last year’s Evil Dead Rise, in particular, have doubled down on this approach.
“I told the studio that I wanted to make a nasty film, a film that hurts, from which you come away tested,” Vaniček tells the outlet, suggesting he’s the right man for the job. “I’m going to put...

Here's something of a surprise: a new "Evil Dead" movie is on the way! After successfully relaunching the franchise with last year's nasty, gory "Evil Dead Rise," Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert's Ghost House Pictures have tapped up-and-coming filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček to helm what Deadline is describing as an "Evil Dead" spin-off film. I'm guessing they're calling it a "spin-off" rather than a sequel to imply that this new entry in the series will not connect to the recent "Evil Dead Rise." In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) last year, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. It looks like they’re on track to do just that, as Deadline reports that Sébastien Vaniček has been hired direct the next entry in the franchise.
After spending a decade making short films, Vaniček made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Infested, which premiered last year and showed viewers what happens when “residents of a rundown French apartment building battle against an army of deadly, rapidly reproducing spiders.” As Deadline notes, “the film won Best Picture and Best Director...

For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...
