With her quirky personality and perky smile, Meg Ryan reigned as queen of romantic comedies for over two decades after stumbling onto an acting career during her college years. Over the past 30 years, the blond-haired, blue-eyed actress has carved out a diverse and successful career, making her one of the most popular actresses of her time.
Ryan was born November 19, 1961, in Fairfield, Connecticut. After graduating high school, she majored in journalism at New York University, and began acting to earn extra money, adopting the name Meg Ryan (taken from her grandmother’s maiden name). Following appearances in TV commercials and her film debut in George Cukor‘s final film “Rich and Famous,” Ryan gained fame as half of one of the most popular soap opera super couples with her portrayal of Betsy Stewart Montgomery on “As the World Turns” from 1982-1984. Commercial cinema especially in Southeast Asia has always followed the money. A successful movie at the box office would inspire countless imitations until the well would run dry and takings decline leading to the next cycle. “A Better Tomorrow” upon release in 1986 really hit the popular culture zeitgeist, creating an iconic figure in Chow Yun Fat, a whole new subgenre in Heroic Bloodshed and inspired a wave of copycats and inspirations. One of the more mature inspirations was a double bill by Taylor Wong in “Rich and Famous” and “Tragic Hero” released the following year. Headlined by then ubiquitous Chow Yun Fat, it would strive for epic status telling its story over two features.

The majority of Steven Soderbergh’s delicious new comedy “Let Them All Talk” occurs on a cruise ship crossing from New York to London. Amidst the mass of passengers onboard, we’re focused on four women: Alice Hughes (Meryl Streep), a fictional Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist, her two oldest friends, Roberta (Candice Bergen) and Susan (Dianne Wiest), and Alice’s zealous new literary agent (Gemma Chan). Simmering among these four women are countless secrets, resentments, and regrets — and somewhere across the Atlantic, all of them are bound to come to a boil.
In directing the film, Soderbergh took a guerrilla approach. He eschewed the usual trove of lights and equipment, favoring natural lighting and a wheelchair for dolly shots. Much of the dialogue was unscripted, too — Streep has said that Soderbergh provided the actors with outlines of each scene and directed them to improvise their lines. The result is an organic,...

After enduring any number of paid celebrity vacations disguised as feature films, it’s edifying to learn that a cast and crew can have a great journey and make a worthwhile film at the same time, as Steven Soderbergh and an impressive ensemble have done with “Let Them All Talk,” filmed almost entirely during a real transatlantic, New York-to-Southampton crossing on the Queen Mary 2.
You won’t begrudge Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest, Gemma Chan and Lucas Hedges getting an ocean voyage out of the deal, since this comedy-drama about a blocked novelist having an awkward reunion with old friends is such a witty exploration of relationships and of the responsibility artists have to their muses. It’s “Wild Strawberries” for women of a certain age, and a big improvement over Soderbergh and Streep’s previous collaboration, the disjointed “The Laundromat.”

“A Better Tomorrow”, as well as spearheading the heroic bloodshed genre had the side effect of making the triad lifestyle appear more glamourous than it really was. In an industry where imitation is the (in)sincerest form of flattery, box office hits lead to copycats and director Taylor Wong teamed with Chow Yun-fat to make two of his better works in “Rich and Famous” and “Tragic Hero”. In 1989, their third collaboration was released in “Triads: The Inside Story”, which could not have been further removed from the other movies and purported to show a more realistic side to triad life.

Andrew takes a nerdy dive into the pop culture real and fictional that's made its way into the world of Red Dwarf...
Creating culture within science-fiction can be tricky. It’s potentially alienating, with the audience required to understand allusions without a reference point. Then again, if you throw in too many contemporary references, the future starts to look dated pretty quickly. Red Dwarf has walked that fine line, building its own stars and entertainment but chucking in the familiar, just to keep the world grounded. We take a look at humanity’s future culture as seen through the eyes of Lister, Rimmer, Cat, Kryten and Holly.

Kino Lorber was right to bring out Foxes (1980) in Blu-ray under their Kl Studio Classics series. The elegant re-issue seems aimed at convincing film snobs that this little gem from the last days of disco finally deserves their attention after a distance of 35 years, during which time it was either dismissed as another insignificant teen comedy of the ‘80s, or as a guilty pleasure. But longtime champions of the film, myself included, need no convincing. We owned the clamshell VHS, we owned the first-generation DVD, and now, if anything, I’d venture to say we feel vindicated that it now carries the stamp as a bonafide classic by a home video label as respected as Kino Lorber. Indeed, a major fist-pump moment comes during director Adrian Lyne’s remark in the audio commentary that Roger Ebert selected it as his favorite film of 1980 and took it with...

Former 7th Heaven star Stephen Collins comes clean to People magazine about allegations that he was sexually inappropriate with three underage girls.
In October, a recording allegedly of Collins confessing to child molestation during a therapy session with his estranged wife Faye Collins was released by TMZ.

It all begins with a freeze frame of a dirt road somewhere in Yorkshire county, lined with trees whose lush foliage converges above in an arch. What could it be if not a portal? The movie itself, meanwhile, has not even started as we watch the opening credits, encased in large old-fashioned frames, slowly fade away—a device consistently favored by Alain Resnais who opened each of his 19 features likewise, holding off the films themselves until the screen no longer contained any visual surplus. The freeze frame comes to life as the camera pans farther down the road; then we find ourselves in a theatrical set.
We have been here before, of course. Resnais' Smoking/No Smoking, also based on a play by British playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn, is set in Yorkshire as well. Life of Riley (Aimer, boire et chanter) borrows from the five-hour diptych its theatrical setting, one...

1. The term "gaslight." The Ingrid Bergman thriller "Gaslight" -- released 70 years ago this week, on May 4, 1944, wasn't the original use of the title. There was Patrick Hamilton's 1938 play "Gas Light," retitled "Angel Street" when it came to Broadway a couple years later. And there was a British film version in 1939, starring Anton Walbrook (later the cruel impresario in "The Red Shoes") and Diana Wynyard.
Still, the glossy 1944 MGM version remains the best-known telling of the tale, with the title an apparent reference to the flickering Victorian lamps that are part of Gregory's (Charles Boyer) scheme to make wife Paula (Bergman) think she's seeing things that aren't there, thus deliberately undermining her sanity in order to have her institutionalized so that he'll be free to ransack the ancestral home to find the missing family jewels.

Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2013—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2013 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2013 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Jacqueline Bisset vs. the Golden Globes 2014 get-lost orchestra NBC or whoever organized the Golden Globes 2014 ceremony sat Jacqueline Bisset way in the back of the awards ceremony ballroom. Never mind the fact that Bisset’s film career began nearly half a century ago and that she was a Golden Globe nominee in the Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television category for the mini-series Dancing on the Edge. As a result, it took Bisset, who seemed about as surprised as everybody else when her named was called up, more than a minute to reach the stage. (Photo: Jacqueline Bisset accepts her Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television © HFPA.) Visibly moved, Bisset had to wait a few more seconds before she was able to talk. By the time she began with her somewhat rambling acceptance speech,...

Miley Cyrus is known for being off-the-cuff, so it's no surprise that her latest interview for Harper's Bazaar's October issue (which hits newsstands on Sept. 24) is full of hilarious, silly, and truthful bits about the former Disney star's life. Read on to find out the six most interesting things we learned about Miley from her most recent feature. She Isn't Obsessed With Getting Rich and Famous "My parents always had money, and I've always been around this industry, so I didn't have my mind blown or become obsessed with being famous. When I was growing up, I didn't even notice that I started making all this money. There's something about new money that makes people change. But I never did not have [money]. So when I got it, I didn't become obsessed with having it." She Has Advice For Lindsay Lohan "The other day I saw that Lindsay Lohan was getting rid of,...

“A kind of banalization of celebrity has occurred: we are now offered an instant, ready-to-mix fame as nutritious as packet soup. In the post-Warhol era a single gesture such as uncrossing one's legs has more significance than all the pages in War and Peace.”
- Jg Ballard
The darker side of fame and the sinister aftertaste of success are recurring features in many of Cukor’s films, from What Price Hollywood? (1932) to Rich and Famous (1981); the American director often hinted at the anguishing emptiness lurking behind stardom. In It Should Happen to You (1954) Cukor pushes even further with his reflections on the elusive matter of celebrity and the role that mono-dimensional images play in projecting the illusion of limelight. Gladys Glover (Judy Holliday), an aspiring bigwig of nondescript qualities, meets Pete Sheppard (Jack Lemmon) in Central Park, where he is busy capturing “real things and real people” with his hand-held...

Jacqueline Bisset with her Locarno award.

The sea-green eyes still sparkle. The lips may pout a fraction less, but they’re undeniably sensuous. And, of course, the cheekbones remain to die for. As a VIP guest of the Locarno Film Festival, where she has received a lifetime achievement award, Jacqueline Bisset has been treated like Hollywood royalty.
She’s here to talk about the legendary director George Cukor (the subject of a retrospective) with whom she worked on Rich And Famous, his last film in 1981 – a project she also co-produced.

I have been invited to Locarno this year and am looking forward to going once more.
It is an amazing locale at the Swiss tip of Italy's Lago Maggiore. While the town sure looks old Italian to me people there tend to speak German.
Very charming. Their grand outdoor theater in a big piazza is rare in our film world and quite magnificent. I look forward to the films and seeing old friends.
Just announced the 20-film competition lineup features 18 world premieres and represents 16 countries, while the Piazza Grande selections run from big budget to art house films.
The Locarno Film Festival, in its first edition under the new artistic director Carlo Chatrian, on Wednesday revealed an eclectic and international lineup.
The 8,000-seat Piazza Grande, the largest silver screen in Europe and Locarno’s signature venue, this year illustrates the mixed genres Locarno traditionally features, with a lineup that includes Quentin Dupieux’s crime comedy Wrong Cops, with a cast that includes celebrity goth Marilyn Manson.
“I want the Piazza Grande selection to feature a sampling of what the festival has to offer in its various sections and tributes, and I think we made a big step in this direction,” said Chatrian, a veteran festival programmer and author who took over direction of the lakeside festival after the unexpected departure of Olivier Pere last year.
Mr. Morgan’s Last Love, a drama from Sandra Nettelbeck that stars Michael Cain as a retired professor who finds a connection with a young Parisian woman.
We’re the Millers, a comedy from Rawson Marshall Thurber with a cast that includes Jennifer Aniston and Ed Helms.
Also scheduled to screen in the picturesque Piazza Grande: 1981 classic Rich and Famous, part of the festival’s retrospective dedicated to director George Cukor (the film's star, Jacqueline Bisset, will be in Locarno to introduce the film)
Werner Herzog’s great Fitzcarraldo, the director’s 1982 biopic about Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald that will screen as part of the festival’s homage to Herzog, who will be honored with a lifetime achievement prize.
The Piazza Grande will also feature an Italian film -- La Variabile Umana (The Human Factor), the feature film debut from acclaimed documentary maker Bruno Oliviero -- for the first time in six years.
The festival previously announced that much-heralded blockbuster 2 Guns, from Baltasar Kormákur -- which stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg -- would open the festival August 7.
The competition lineup, which includes 18 world premieres and two international premieres, is nearly as varied as the selection showing in the Piazza Grande.
Among the highlights: E Agora? Lembra-me (What Now? Remind Me) from Portugal’s Joaquim Pinto, the director’s touching and vibrant telling of his battle with HIV.
Albert Serra's Historia de la Meva Mort (Story of My Death), which had been tabbed by the European press as a likely Cannes selection.
Real, the first film from Japan’s Kiyoshi Kurosawa in five years.
U Ri Sunhi (Our Sunhi) by South Kore's acclaimed Sangsoo Hong.
Sangue (Blood) from Italy’s Pippo Delbono, which explores Italy’s Red Brigade insurgency.
Short Term 12, a remake of a 2008 short (both directed by Destin Cretton), is the only U.S. film screening in competition.
“There’s an intriguing mix of young director and first time works with more experienced talent in the competition lineup,” Chatrian said. “I’m eager to see how the public will react to these films we’ve chosen.”

The programme for the 66th Locarno Film Festival has been unveiled and was compiled with “diversity” in mind, according to new artistic director Carlo Chatrian.
“The only categorical imperative was to work with diversity, take it to extremes,” said Chatrian.
“For years, the festival’s policy has been to position its mission of discovery within a programme that includes mainstream cinema, but only of the kind that, despite its high production values, is not just pure spectacle, the kind that doesn’t see entertainment and intelligence as incompatible.”

TV Line is reporting that Heather Morris, Mark Salling, Harry Shum Jr. and Amber Riley will not be returning to Glee as regular cast members, but may make occasional appearances. Well, considering that Mark, Harry, and Amber were basically guest stars last season, the only real difference this year will be Heather.

Chandler Massey and Freddie Smith are both nominated in the Younger Actor category at the Daytime Emmy Awards, and below you can see the clips they selected for Emmy voters. Up first is Chandler, who selected the scenes after his character Will got drunk and snogged Kris Kristofferson‘s son.
Here’s Freddie’s Emmy Reel. His character Sonny doesn’t have the hysterical drama that Will has, so Freddie’s scenes are much quieter, as he tells Will’s dad that he has feelings for the misty-eyed blond.

In The Guilt Trip, Barbra Streisand is intent on rediscovering her comic roots. John Patterson wishes she would stick to straight movies
Like most people of a sane and well-adjusted disposition, I find the prospect of a couple of hours stuck in a car with Barbra Streisand to be terrifying, even if her company is adulterated by the presence of likably shouty leading man Seth Rogen. That's an hour-and-a-half for me, the viewer, eight days of narrative time for Rogen and la Bar as nervous son and interfering mother, and three months of real time on set for both of them. Sounds like I got off lightly.
Streisand has been taking it easy the last decade or so. Since 2004 she has only appeared in two Fockers sequels (in which she was perfectly cast), and in the 1990s she only made two movies, both of which she directed and both of...

Well wonder no more. This is what death looks like.

His daily and miserable routine involves by grabbing the bottles of milk delivered to his doorstep each morning, pouring said milk on his corn flakes and wolfing them down, then trudging over to a cafe where he gets to, you guessed it, provide milk for everyone's tea... at least I'm guessing its tea, considering it is the UK. Never speaking to anyone, he simply pours and watches customers walk away,...
Well wonder no more. This is what death looks like.
Don't believe me? Read on. Because by the end of this week's episode of Misfits, you will never think of milk (or any other dairy product) in the same way again.
Meet Brian.

Miley Cyrus is headed to "Two And A Half Men."
The singer/actress has landed a two-episode arc on the CBS series as Missi, a girl Jake (Angus T. Jones) falls for when he comes back from the army.
The news was first reported earlier in August by Life of the Rich and Famous, which revealed that Cyrus would play a "hot new local in town that's dating soon-to-be-legal Jake Harper (Angus T. Jones)" and that Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher) will develop a "massive crush" on Cyrus' character. No word from CBS if the latter part is true.

Miley Cyrus is reportedly headed to Two and a Half Men.
According to Life of the Rich and Famous - not typically a source for casting news, mind you - the 19-year old will come on board Season 10 of the CBS sitcom as a love interest for Jake.
The site adds that Miley's management pitched the star for this role and that she'll appear on multiple episodes. Viewers should also prepare for Ashton Kutcher's Walden to eventually develop a crush on the character.
Two and a Half Men moves to Thursdays on September 27 and, in news we can confirm, True Blood's Brit Morgan will guest star on the premiere.
Update: E! News has confirmed this casting scoop and describes Miley's character as "rife with comedy."...

Miley Cyrus is reportedly stopping by "Two and a Half Men."
The 19-year old, newly-engaged actress will be playing a "hot new local in town that's dating soon-to-be-legal Jake Harper (Angus T. Jones)" on the CBS sitcom, Life of the Rich and Famous reports. Later in Cyrus' alleged multiple-episode arc, Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher) will develop a "massive crush" on Cyrus' character.
Lotraf claims Cyrus' management made the pitch CBS to land her the recurring role.
CBS has not yet replied to a request for comment.

Miley Cyrus reportedly took some steamy photos for her beau, Liam Hemsworth, and now they are making the rounds online.
A photo of Cyrus naked in a bathtub covering her breasts -- showing off her signature sideboob look and her dreamcatcher tattoo -- was taken by friend and photographer Vijat Mohindra. The sexy photo is featured on his website along with several other steamy, but fully-clothed photos.
The blog Life of the Rich and Famous first posted the photo and claims it was taken in 2011, when Cyrus was just 18. Mohindra and Cyrus are known to be close friends as he actually documented the singer's Gypsy Heart tour in the spring of 2011.
The photo was allegedly intended to be for Liam's eyes only, but it is now prominently featured on Mohindra's website. Request for comment from the photographer's reps were not immediately returned.

Here is the good news: these photographs of Demi Lovato, published on Life Of The Rich And Famous, are thankfully, not naked pictures. We’re still cringing for her because no one wants grainy photographs of themselves in suggestive poses available to the world at large. An excess of 80 pictures of Demi have found themselves on the site, some black-and-white versions of her dressed in lingerie and getting racy for the camera. Others are of her with friends, some of which we’ve seen before. Again, and do note this, this, thankfully isn’t as bad as previously leaked snaps of various stars. But Demi is 19, and these pin-up posed pictures were taken when she was shooting Camp Rock 2, so she is a year or two younger according to the timeline, so it’s weird enough in our books. This was also before her rough breakdown and subsequent rehab stint,...

After a phenomenal first week, the season 14 cast lost their spark with their second dance. What a bummer! When season 14 premiered last week, I was positive this was the most talented (if least famous) group we've seen on Dancing with the Stars. However, after tonight, I might have to take that back! I don't know what happened, but everyone seemed tired, lackluster and subpar compared to their performances last week. Roshon Fegan & Chelsie Hightower: Roshon is a born performer and judging from his nearly flawless quickstep to "Life Style of the Rich and Famous," it's obvious he has a natural knack for dancing. He might as well be a pro. 9, 8, 9 = 26 Sherri Shepherd & Val Chmerkovskiy: Sherri may not be totally refined, but she's a kick in the pants to watch dance. She lights up the stage when she's up there and I always smile just because it's clear she's...

I mean, I understand that you need to be hot to be an actress, but can we have some semblance of realism in our casting, please?
I first knew there was something seriously wrong with the world when, in the gay 90s on the TV series Star Trek: Voyager, a former Borg captive named Seven-of-Nine also happened to be a 6-foot-tall Victoria's Secret-lookin' model. I mean, what are the odds?
Then, the TV series House (which I adore) decides that 8/10 doctors on the show need to be 23 and Super Hot (as if really hot people become doctors. And as if you can be finished with medical school, finished with your internship, and have passed your board exams by the age of 23 But you were also the hottest girl in school. Ha!).
Well, the world is at it again. This time, it's the casting for the new TV series Beauty and the Beast (you know,...

What is so special about Kermit the Frog? What is about Kermit, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, the Great Gonzo, and others that make us treasure them so dearly, so closely? I don’t ask because I don’t get it–just a couple of days ago, I bought myself a Kermit the Frog plush. Why? Well…you know…I mean…He’S Kermit The Frog. That’s why. These characters, who aren’t exactly one-dimensional, despite not being nearly as complex as we might perceive, are part of many people’s childhoods. They were part of mine, certainly. Even though I grew up years after The Muppet Show stopped airing first-run episodes, I could go back and watch the best moments on VHS, as well as the Muppet movies. The nostalgia I hold for Kermit and friends is immense, even though there was a long stretch where I just let myself forget about them.

There is no question as to who the most important stars of the upcoming "The Muppets" are -- it's all in the name. But a decade removed from their last film and, in all honesty, even further from true prominence in the unending Hollywood buzz cycle, the importance of the architect of their revival can not be understated.
Still, writer/star Jason Segel insists that he's just a vessel for the great Muppet tradition.
"We have some mention of the standard Rich and Famous contract from the original Muppet movie. We have a lot of things like that in there," he told a group of reporters recently on the set of the film (via Collider). "To me, I just really wanted to pay homage to those movies that meant so much to me growing up. I wanted the experience, like we talked about, where parents... Our generation of kids, we'll remember those great movies,...

HollywoodNews.com: So yesterday I reported on Rosie O’Donnell and Ashley Fink clearing the air over Rosie’s remark about Ashley’s storyline on ‘Glee.’
Today, it’s time to clear up reports that Rosie and her new boss, Oprah Winfrey, are already on the outs.
Rosie is set to headline a daily talk show on Oprah’s Own network this fall and Oprah took to Twitter to torpedo the rumors: “I get so sick of people trying to create fights and feuds when women are in business. Don’t buy into it. There’s no feud between Rosie and me. We haven’t even had a discussion about the new show.”
Bissett On Best Picture: The lovely Jacqueline Bisset and I chatted at the BAFTA/La Awards Season Tea Party about Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Just over a year ago we heard that Atari was pitching a Missile Command movie. That's a fairly ridiculous notion, given that the original arcade game was a story free way to mix simple geometry and gaming, but not a very surprising one given the way other projects have been set up at studios in recent months. (Ahem, Battleship, etc.) At the time, it looked like Missile Command might end up at Fox, and now a year later that's what has happened. And there are even writers attached to turn the (non)story of paranoid cold war geometry into a movie. Variety [1] says that Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula Year Zero, Flash Gordon) will write for Fox, with Peter Chernin producing through Chernin Entertainment. What's the story? No idea. Sure, there was some Bs backstory invented for Missle Command when the game was ported to home consoles like the...
