"You can't count it!" That's what producer Peter Safran said to Entertainment Weekly in 2023 about "The Curse of La Llorona" being part of The Conjuring Universe. Safran, who has helped to spearhead the very successful horror franchise alongside James Wan since 2013, did not leave any room for interpretation there. Yet, director Michael Chaves' successful 2019 feature directorial debut contains characters from "Conjuring" films, as well as overt references to events in those stories. Be that as it may, this movie now exists as both an unquestionable hit and a film that narratively exists in The Conjuring Universe but, for technical reasons, actually doesn't.
In the era of cinematic universes, it's an almost unprecedented situation. Why provide connective tissue if the plan isn't to connect these dots?...

The concept of the meta film has become more and more significant during the latest years, with Iranian cinema, which always had a knack for blurring the line between cinema and reality, or fantasy and reality if you prefer, seeming like an ideal platform for such a type of movie. “Me, Maryam, the Children and 26 Others” definitely highlights the fact.
Me, Maryam, the Children and 26 Others is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
Mahboube is a 30-plus sculptor living alone with her pets and plants, with her narrations and a number of scenes throughout the movie implying a sort of trauma that has led her to isolation. However, as the story begins, due to financial problems, she decides to rent out her house for a six-day shooting of a short film, which turns out to be an autobiographical story about the director's divorce from his wife. I was a kid just as the drive-in craze was coming to a close. I can recall packing into our giant boat of a Chrysler station wagon and trekking out to see some first-run movies with my family back in the early 80s. I vividly remember seeing The Muppets Take Manhattan, Superman III (which terrified young me to no end), and Return of the Jedi on the massive screens of the Starlight Drive-In that stood for decades after the projectors were shut down and the lot converted into a gigantic swap-meet. Unfortunately, I was far too young to take in the legendary exploitation fare of the period. Sometimes I wish I had been born fifteen or twenty years earlier so I could have experienced the heyday of Aip, New World, and their ilk firsthand, but living through the dawn of the home video boom wasn’t a bad trade off.

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 4 "The Foundling."
In the latest episode of "The Mandalorian," Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) continues to be more than the Mvp, even as a part of The Children of the Watch, in whose eyes, she is now redeemed. Directed by Carl Weathers, "The Foundling" keeps things short and sweet, focusing on a foundling rescue mission and an unexpected flashback to Order 66 at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. As Grogu re-lives painful memories of that fateful night, we are treated to discovering the Jedi who rescued him after all — it is Master Kelleran Beq, played by none other than Ahmed Best, whose cameo is a sure-shot highlight of the episode.
Circling back to The Children of the Watch, Bo-Katan immediately makes herself useful as a new recruit, taking the onus of heading the search and rescue party for Paz Vizsla's son, Ragnar (Wesley Kimmel...

The following article contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3 through episode 3.
In season 3 of "The Mandalorian," the Armorer (Emily Swallow) is a pivotal character. She creates armor and weapons and knows how to work with beskar, yes, but she's also the spiritual and moral leader of her growing covert. The Armorer is the one who performs the ceremony to induct younger members of the covert into their adult roles, as we saw in season 3, episode 1. She counsels members like Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) who are struggling with issues of conscience and upholds the tenets of her Mandalorian sect, The Children of the Watch.
This sect vows in adolescence to never remove their helmets in the presence of others, even family or partners. It's been a central theme of the show, with Din removing his helmet and becoming an apostate. To change that status, he had to bathe in the Living...

We thought “Game of Thrones” might be an unstoppable Emmy juggernaut for its final season, and it was … sort of. At the Creative Arts Awards on September 15, the show won 10 prizes. But when the rest of the kudos were handed out during the telecast on September 22, its domination was relatively mild. It did in fact win Best Drama Series, but it claimed only one other award: Best Drama Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage. Check out the complete list of Emmy winners here, and scroll down for the complete list of “Thrones” victories in its entire history.

“Game of Thrones” and “Fleabag” were Sunday night’s big Emmy series winners — yet neither show will continue after this year, which opens the door wide open for an incoming tidal shift at the Television Academy.
As we head into a new decade, TV’s about to undergo another dramatic evolution, and the Emmys will likely look a whole lot different soon. HBO dominated this year’s Emmy Awards, with 34 overall wins — easily ahead of streaming rivals Netflix (27) and Amazon Prime Video (15), which had its strongest Emmy showing ever on Sunday night.
But all bets are off in 2020, as new deep-pocketed programmers enter the game, including Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Peacock and Quibi. As some of the biggest Emmy winners of the past decade retire, the race will soon be more competitive than ever.
But it felt appropriate that the 2019 ceremony ended by honoring the biggest game...

We thought there might be a “Game of Thrones” bloodbath at the 2019 Creative Arts Emmys, and that’s what we got, though it wasn’t a clean sweep. On Sunday night, September 15, the HBO epic fantasy series won 10 awards. That brings its all-time total to 57 wins, with more categories to come during the main Emmys telecast next Sunday night, September 22. That’s more awards than any narrative series has ever won at the Emmys. The only series it trails in any genre is the sketch comedy “Saturday Night Live,” which has had the benefit of 44 years on the air. Scroll down to see everything “Thrones” has won so far.

The end is near for Westerosi folk.
After seven seasons of fantasy-fuelled spectacle and more watercooler moments than we can even count, HBO’s Game of Thrones is now about to finish off what’s been a truly fantastic run. April 14th is the date for your diaries – in case you haven’t heard yet – as that’s when the Night King (essentially death incarnate) will be unleashed upon the Seven Kingdoms.
It’s the fateful battle between fire and ice – between the living and the dead – that has viewers around the world giddy with anticipation to see what HBO’s cooked up, and while expectations are currently sky high (and understandably so), programming chief Casey Bloys has assured us many times already that season 8 will deliver on everything we could ask for and more.
But with the premiere quickly approaching, no doubt fans are beginning to do their Game of Thrones...

As we’re now about halfway through the Broadway season, there are currently eight productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative types, the opening, and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Choir Boy” (opens January 8; closes March 10)
In this new play by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, the story centers on the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, which for a half a century has been dedicated to the education of strong, ethical black men. One talented student has been waiting for years to take his rightful place as the leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. But can he make his way through the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?...

The Children deals with the disintegration of the family unit, and the decay of modern society. Just kidding! The Children is about radioactive kids who like to give hugs and burn people up real good. Some horror films do have subtext, with layers peeled back to reveal inner truths about ourselves and the world. And some horror films are content to just show children having their hands cut off with a samurai sword.
Released in June of 1980, The Children was actually quite a success for a low budget film – according to Producer Carlton J. Albright (Luther The Geek) it earned $8 million dollars within its first year, playing to theaters and drive-ins alike. Not too shabby for a truly bizarre, high concept scare fest.

Michael Weldon of "Psychotronic Magazine" praised this movie's awfulness to me almost 30 years ago, and I only caught up with it this week.
The Children concerns the ghastly events that occur after a school bus drives through a noxious cloud of gas...which is exactly how Richard Matheson got The Incredible Shrinking Man going, so it's not a bad start. There are only a few kids on the bus, luckily (I'm surprised the filmmakers got any parents to trust them with their kids -- but then, half the kids in this film have the same last name as the producer). I'm going to have to provide some spoilers here because the movie is so bad and so poorly paced that no one will watch it through without a damn good reason. These kids, though normal looking, become radioactive zombies with an impulse to approach any adults with arms outstretched, begging for hugsies!

Troma sounds a lot like trauma and without knowing how they came up with the name I can't but help think it's on purpose. After all they've spent more than thirty years making sure there was something to offend somebody in virtually every movie they've made. Maybe that's why Troma is still around thirty years later. They bring a smile to the face of anyone who likes seeing sacred cows splattered even if at the end you feel a little messy yourself.
