Speaking to Them magazine alongside her “Love Lies Bleeding” co-star Katy O’Brien, Kristen Stewart briefly reflected on making the 2020 holiday romantic comedy “Happiest Season.” Set up at Sony Pictures and released in the U.S. direct to streaming via Hulu, the Clea DuVall-directed film was widely touted as the first lesbian Christmas rom-com produced by a major Hollywood studio.
“The identity was beaten out of my goals there,” Stewart told Them about “Happiest Season.” “I was getting so many studio executive notes about my hair and my clothes. I was like, ‘You did read the script. You did hire me. What are we doing here?’ It was fucking annoying.”
“And it’s fine, because I guess there are ways that you need to shroud things for everyone to easily digest,” Stewart added. “And I’m down with that. And honestly, fucking hats off to Clea, because I don’t have the patience [to do] that.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

The Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar is back on network TV — but in a way you’ve never seen him before.
Nayyar guest-stars on this Tuesday’s Night Court (NBC, 8/7c), reuniting with his Big Bang co-star Melissa Rauch, but his character is a far cry from Big Bang’s painfully awkward Raj. He plays Martini Toddwallis, a flashy fashion designer who is a hit with the ladies… and who takes a special interest in Rauch’s Abby.

"Five Nights at Freddy's" is getting a sequel. As expected, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse are wasting no time in getting a sequel to last year's hit video game adaptation going. While the studio has yet to make a formal announcement, star Josh Hutcherson recently revealed that a follow-up to the horror flick is in the works as we speak, and it sounds very much like the brass wants to get the ball moving sooner rather than later.
Hutcherson recently spoke with Variety while promoting his new movie "The Beekeeper." During the conversation, he addressed the status of "Five Nights at Freddy's 2." He confirmed that the story is being worked on as we speak. "I know they're in the process right now of nailing down the story, and they want to get going as soon as possible," Hutcherson said. A new NCIS spinoff is coming to CBS. NCIS: Sydney, the first international-set entry in the NCIS franchise, follows a joint team of American NCIS agents and Australian Federal Police officers as they investigate naval crimes in one of the most contested parts of the ocean on the planet. Will the new show fill the void left by NCIS, which has had its season 21 premiere date delayed because of the Hollywood strikes? We’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about NCIS: Sydney.
What is ‘NCIS: Sydney’ about?
In NCIS: Sydney, officers from the Afp – Australia’s equivalent of the FBI – work hand-in-hand with NCIS agents as part of a multinational task force charged with keeping naval crimes in check. But working together doesn’t mean that everyone gets along, as seen in the trailer (via YouTube) when Afp sergeant...

Few horror sub-genres are as divisive as exorcism movies. For some, they are silly to the point of high camp, outrageous stories about invisible creatures that can take control of normal people and make them do outrageous things. For others, exorcism movies reveal a hidden realm of evil that has a very real impact on our world.
That tension allows a wide variety of approaches within the sub-genre, despite the dominance of one monumental film from the 70s. Exorcism movies can be ridiculous crowd-pleasers, stately dramas, or lowbrow comedies. Whether it’s because of the power of Christ or a really good script, you should feel compelled to watch these great exorcism movies.
The Exorcist (1973)
Of course, it starts with The Exorcist, directed by the late, great William Friedkin. Friedkin wasn’t writer William Peter Blatty’s first choice to direct the movie, which first went to Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich.

Exclusive: Ed Harris (Westworld), Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery) and Natalie Morales (No Hard Feelings) have closed deals to lead My Dead Friend Zoe, a dark dramedy about two generations of veterans, family and friendship, which Kyle Hausmann-Stokes will direct in his feature debut.
The film written by Hausmann-Stokes and A.J. When the vet is summoned to the remote lake house of her estranged Vietnam vet grandfather (Harris), she is tasked with providing the one thing he refuses…help.

“Black Site” director Sophia Banks is hoping her new 10 million action thriller “Black Site” is the little movie that could.
“We’re not trying to be an 80 million action movie but we want to make this genre accessible for people,” Banks tells me. “It Ok to shoot an indie action movie. As long as you take people on a good ride, then that’s all we want. We just want people to have fun and go on a journey.”
In “Black Site,” Michelle Monaghan stars as Abby Trent, a CIA agent based at a top-secret black site who must hunt one of their most notorious detainees (Jason Clarke) after he escapes from his cell and goes on a killing spree.
I recently caught up with Banks and Monaghan over Zoom.
How did it all come about?
Banks: I did a couple of shorts. One premiered at Tribeca called “Proxy” that got sold to Anonymous Content.

“Ozark” fans, rejoice. The Jason Bateman and Julia Garner-starring drama series is returning to Netflix in April with a second part to its fourth season — and it’s just one of many other hotly anticipated titles coming to the streamer this month.

Carol Speed, who lit up the screen in the cult blaxploitation film The Mack, died on Jan. 14 in Muskogee, Okla. She was 76 and her family announced her death in a statement published online, but did not specify the cause.
Speed came to filmgoer attention in the 1970s in a series of blaxploitation movies, but broke through in 1973’s The Mack, in which she played the girlfriend and head prostitute of star Max Julien, who died earlier this month. That led Speed to television roles on TV shows, including Julia and Sanford and Son.
Her other big role was in the horror film Abby in 1974, playing the title character, who is possessed by an ancient Nigerian devil known as Eshu. The film was a hit among moviegoers after its Christmas Day release. But Warner Bros. sued, claiming it stole the plot of its film The Exorcist. In a competitive situation, Disney’s Onyx Collective has landed the Mahershala Ali starrer The Plot with a series order. The eight-episode limited series, from Endeavor Content, will stream on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories.
The Plot, an adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by Jean Hanff Korelitz, whose book “You Should Have Known” was adapted into HBO’s The Undoing starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, was taken to the premium marketplace in November, sparking a bidding.
Described as a gripping cat and mouse story, The Plot centers on a struggling author Jake (Ali) who is primed to take advantage of any opportunity that might help revive his career. When a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself, Jake commits an act of literary theft that changes his life irrevocably. Now, someone knows his secret and is threatening him…...

No one is innocent in the town of Sunrise, Maine. Everyone's secrets are bubbling to the surface!
Between Frank Kovick and Samantha Larabee's potential affair to Mary-Elizabeth Merchant hooking up with Jimmy Tinker, Sunrise looks more like a soap opera than a murder mystery. Murder in Small Town X Season 1 Episode 3 exposed more of the inner workings hidden in this quiet coastal town.
"Episode 3" was slower, but the plot added more layers to the grander mystery at large. Let's jump into the rewatch to discover the new twists.
Andy choosing Alan as the next Lifeguard wasn't surprising in the least. I called it during the rewatch for Murder in Small Town X Season 1 Episode 2 that he had a close bond with Jeff and Alan.
Plus, add in Brian for a complete majority voting bloc built in the war room.
Luckily, Alan had a clearer head in his position as he treated everyone evenly and fairly.

Every year, movies are being produced at faster rates and in greater quantity, and that’s thanks – in part – to streamers like Netflix. Because of their business strategy, customers can now watch thousands of films for the same price as a single cinema ticket. As such, the entertainment appetite of the American public has been growing stronger with each passing season. To that end, here’s an overview of the best new movies coming to Netflix next month.
First off, we got science fiction and fantasy. Fans of visiting other worlds will be in for a treat in July, as Netflix will be adding Cloud Atlas to its library. Directed by the Wachowski siblings – the same ones who created the now-infamous Matrix franchise – this time-traveling epic follows the stories of a handful of reincarnating souls who live their different yet similar lives across several centuries.

Travis Denning’s “After a Few” is an odd song to be a summertime country hit. A stormy account of a physical attraction that just won’t quit, the brooding mid-tempo tune is shot through with longing and shadowy regret, rather than your typical warm-weather optimism. The Warner Robins, Georgia, native penned the song with writers Kelly Archer and Justin Weaver, and says he was floored by Archer’s idea to have the melody start off high with the tension ratcheted all the way up.

Lifetime has greenlit a new “Dance Moms” series, subtitled “Abby’s Virtual Dance Off,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The cabler and Abby Lee Miller are inviting dancers from across the country to submit their best moves to see who has what it takes to be dubbed “The Abby Dancer” in this new 12-episode series premiering this summer.
Creativity is encouraged, whether it comes to fancy footwork or an interesting at-home backdrop. As Lifetime puts it, “a hip-hop routine in the kitchen or a ballet recital in the backyard — anything goes!”
“I see everybody out there, dancing in their living rooms,” Miller said in the series announcement video, which you can watch above. “Well, submit to ‘Abby’s Virtual Dance Off’ on Lifetime!’
Selected videos will then be shown in each episode, with Miller critiquing each self-submitted performance and ultimately Skyping with the winner to reveal whose routine earned her highest accolade.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that Abby’s star and Parks and Recreation alum Natalie Morales has joined the cast of Warner Bros.’ The Little Things opposite Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Rami Malek.
The pics follows Deke (Washington), a burned-out Kern County, CA. deputy sheriff who teams with Baxter (Malek), a crack Lasd detective, to nab a serial killer. Deke’s nose for the “little things” proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. Meanwhile, Deke must wrestle with a dark secret from his past. Jared Leto is in talks to join in the role as the serial killer in the project from writer-director John Lee Hancock.
Morales will play a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department detective working for Baxter.

2018-2019 Upfront Studio Scorecard: Volume of New Scripted Series Drops as Biz Faces Big Transitions
The logline on the 2018-2019 network TV development season: A glamorous business in the throes of transition grapples with unseen forces of disruption and the empire-building ambitions of its alpha-executive leaders.
The major studios ended upfront week with fewer orders for scripted series from Big Four networks and CW compared to the past few years: 34 this year compared to 37 at this point last year. So far, enthusiasm among ad buyers and industry-ites for the new shows has been fairly muted, with none of the newcomers showcased during the week’s parade of programming presentations generating heat a la NBC’s “This Is Us” in 2016 or CBS’ “Young Sheldon” last year.
In a year of reboots, last-minute rescues and ownership concerns driving pickup and renewal decisions, it’s a tough time to be an independent studio. At the same time, co-production deals on shows that originated at other studios bolstered the...

When I think of some of my favorite B films of the 1970s, my mind tends to drift towards the works of the late filmmaker William Girdler. This man made nine movies in six years before his tragic death in ’78 at the age of thirty; chief among them Abby (’74), Grizzly (’76), and Day of the Animals (’77). Now, quantity obviously doesn’t equal quality, and he made a few outright stinkers. But he was exciting to me because he became a better, more confident filmmaker with each film; this is especially evident with his final release, The Manitou (1978), your typical ancient Native American little person demon growing out of the back of a woman’s neck who fights the heroes in space with laser beams kind of flick. You know the type.
Independently produced, The Manitou was released by Avco Embassy in late April, with a June rollout across North America, and worldwide the following year.

There are certain horror films you just love. Weird, offbeat, horrible puzzle boxes that, by all rights, have no logical reason to exist, and yet there they are. And then, there’s Beyond the Door (1974), an Italian / American co-produced quasi-Exorcist treatise that burns down that particular sacred house, stomps on the ashes, and pisses on the embers before speeding off in its Ferrari. If you found The Exorcist too restrained, we may have just become best friends.
Beyond the Door is also known as Chi Sei?, Who Are You?, Behind the Door, The Devil Within Her (not to be confused with the Joan Collins vs. satanic little person shocker) and various other titles it was given in an effort, I’m assuming, to avoid Warner Brothers’ legal department (they can’t catch us if they can’t find us!). The 1970s were a very interesting time for genre fare. Independent, low-budget horror was spreading through “exploitation” flicks meant to draw viewers in with promises of violence, nudity, and a variety of other visceral thrills that often came at the price of other luxuries like plot structure, acting, and production value. From this burgeoning grindhouse scene sprang an even more interesting phenomenon, the “blaxploitation” wave. Blaxploitation, particularly horror blaxploitation, focused on film tropes through the lens of black culture.
Those familiar with blaxploitation are likely aware of William Marshall, but they probably know him by another name: Blacula, aka “Dracula’s Soul Brother.” Blacula is one of the most well-known characters of blaxploitation cinema, due largely to what Marshall brought to the role. Despite what on its surface could be considered a silly premise, Marshall managed to bring some pathos to the proceedings, insisting that his character be an African...

Strangely enough, Pam Grier’s last Blaxploitation feature, 1975’s Sheba, Baby, would be the title to introduce her to a much wider audience thanks to its PG rating. Though undoubtedly adult in theme, it’s a kittenish exercise compared to the violence, gratuitous sex, and shameless taken-for-granted racist and misogynistic antics of earlier efforts. Its classification as the final chapter of Grier’s Blaxploitation days is also sort of a misnomer, since this refers to the last time she’d don her famous persona as an action star in pursuit of a more serious career, heading into Drum (a sequel to the infamous Mandingo), starring opposite Richard Pryor in Greased Lightning, and even a Ray Bradbury adaptation in Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). But 1975 was one of several sterling years for Grier, headlining three films, though none of them would eventually reach the same iconicity as the prior year’s...

Blaxploitation films burst onto the scene in 1971 with the huge success of Gordon Park’s Shaft. By 1972, audiences were clamoring for more, and filmmakers and studios were keen to jump on the bandwagon. While most of the majors were focusing on the Shaft formula of hot chicks and cool Dicks, American International Pictures saw a void that no one had filled yet: the black horror film. And so, with as little money as they usually invested, they sent forth into the world Blacula (1972), and wouldn’t you know it? Audiences loved it.
Just don’t call it Blaxploitation—because it isn’t. Blacula, surprisingly, showcases little of the developing tropes already established by Shaft. There is no "jive" talk, no gratuitous nudity or overwhelming violence. And I say "surprisingly", because it would have been so easy (not to mention profitable) to follow the formula set in motion by Shaft, Superfly,...

Following the massive success of Jaws (1975), producers were chomping at the bit to replicate its grosses. Far too many movies to mention here, but suffice it to say that most were stinkers, and none could put a dent box office – wise in the hull of the Orca. However, one little film somehow managed to not only rake in big bucks in its wake, but paid, ahem, ‘homage’ to the soon to be Universal classic. William Girdler’s Bad Bear Bonanza Grizzly (1976) follows it so closely I’m amazed Jaws doesn’t have a big black snout rammed up its grey finned keister. Regardless of its inspiration, Grizzly is a B movie blast.
Released domestically in May of 1976 by Film Ventures International (and internationally by Columbia Pictures), Grizzly brought in a whopping $39,000,000 Us against a $750,000 budget. An amazing performance at the box office, with no help whatsoever from critics who derided the film as derivative,...

As Deliver Us From Evil lands on disc in the UK, we look back at key lessons the movies teach us about possession...
The idea of demonic possession goes back thousands of years, to before we had film. Most religions carry their own interpretation of what it means for a person to be 'possessed' by a demon or a spirit and it's a complicated, arcane subject shrouded in mystery and ritual.
The Sumerians, thousands of years before Christ, believed all diseases were caused by 'sickness demons' and had their sorcerers attempt early exorcisms as cures. The Quran talks extensively of Jinn (demons) that can drive people to insanity and may only be expelled via worship. In the Bible, Satan and his demons are very much at large using human beings as vessels for devilish deeds. Jesus casts a whole bunch of them out before he's accused of being demon-possessed himself...

Urban action and fatal attraction give rise to a groove from beyond the grave in this funkadelic, fangadelic blaxploitation double-bill from Eureka Entertainment, which sees the eternally cool William Marshall put a fresh spin on the age-old legend of the vampire, condemned to wander the earth with an insatiable lust for blood as Blacula.
Produced at the height of the blaxploitation era, the Blacula movies are the perfect blend of genre and social film making, the types of which hadn’t been seen before… or since!
Blacula (1972)

In 1780, African Prince Mamuwalde (Marshall) pays a visit to Count Dracula in Transylvania, seeking his support in ending the slave trade. Instead, the evil count curses his noble guest and transforms him into a vampire!

Abby (1974)
Director: William Girdler
Writers: William Girdler and Gordon Cornell Layne
Cast: William Marshall (Bishop Garnet Williams), Terry Carter (Rev. Emmett Williams), Austin Stoker (Det. Cass Potter), Carol Speed (Abby Williams), Juanita Moore (Miranda “Momma” Potter)
I pride myself on being a Blaxploitation fan, but I may have missed one of the high points in the genre. A good friend of mine and a trusted resource for solid film recommendations told me about this one. When I elaborate a little further about the cast and the plot, I almost need to turn in my Blaxploitation fan card. It’s almost unpardonable.
“Abby” came out in 1974. It’s a story of possession that debuted a year after another possession story that maybe you heard of. It actually was taken out of circulation for several years because Warner Brothers sued American International Pictures for directly ripping off “The Exorcist”. Maybe,...
