Hey, do you remember "Poseidon"? The 2006 action pic from director Wolfgang Petersen is a remake of the 1972 disaster epic "The Poseidon Adventure," as well as an adaptation of Paul Gallico's 1969 "The Poseidon Adventure" novel. The story focuses on a cruise ship that gets hit by a tidal wave and flips upside down. The survivors have to then claw their way to the bottom of the ship, which is now the top. Lots of characters die horribly along the way. It's fun for the whole family!
The star-studded remake cast includes Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas, Richard Dreyfuss, and the late, great Andre Braugher. Russell is probably the biggest name of the bunch, and the actor plays Robert Ramsey, a character who is both an ex-firefighter and the former Mayor of New York City. His history allows him to sort of take command of the situation, although he's really mostly concerned...

Cinephiles romanticize the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and most of the 1970s as a time of artistic rebellion during which a batch of young directors and experienced helmers saved Hollywood by connecting with Baby Boomer moviegoers bored with formula Westerns, backlot musicals, and all the other fusty stuff their parents dragged them to throughout their childhood. These artists toyed with genre conventions and film technique to reignite a jaded generation's excitement for the medium at a time when television was becoming an increasingly appealing entertainment option.
It was an incredibly exciting time for movies, but audiences of all ages still had an appetite for good ol' cinematic spectacle. They might've tired of sword-and-sandal epics and widescreen adaptations of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, but there was nothing wrong with studios spending loads of money to fill the big screen with eye-popping imagery.

Doctor Odyssey, ABC’s new cruise ship procedural premiering this fall, is “Ryan Murphy at his outrageous, over-the-top best,” reports Joshua Jackson.
From 9-1-1 creator Murphy, Doctor Odyssey stars Fringe alum Jackson as Max, the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship “where the staff works hard and plays harder,” says the ABC synopsis. “It’s all hands on deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”

After years of rumors and speculation, Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun reboot looks like it is finally heading into production. Set to be directed by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, and written by Dan Gregor and Doug Man, fans expect a lot from this reboot. While many have tried (and failed) to update the franchise, and it’s hard to imagine anyone stepping into Leslie Nielsen’s iconic shoes at Lt. Frank Drebin, it’s pretty interesting that the team pairing on this is the same one that teamed on Disney’s much better than expected reboot of Chip n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers. All involved are really funny, so if anyone could make this work, it’s them. With a release date tentatively set for July 18th, 2025, here’s everything we know about the Naked Gun reboot.
Liam Neeson will be the star.

When we think of the greatest actors who opted to retire, there are really so few that ended on a high note. Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread is the first one that comes to mind, but who else would even be close? Unfortunately, it isn’t Gene Hackman, who left Hollywood after a 40+ year on the screen following 2004’s Welcome to Mooseport…which is just about the most embarrassing way to cap off such a legendary career. Then again, maybe it’s just the sort of movie that would make you want to retire.
By the time filming began on what would be his last movie, Gene Hackman was in his mid-70s and had seen enough in the business to know who was competent and, well, who would be directing Welcome to Mooseport. As co-star Maura Tierney remembered, Hackman and Donald Petrie did not get along at all when making the movie.

‘9-1-1’ Sails To 2-Year Audience High In Delayed Viewing With Conclusion Of ‘Poseidon Adventure’ Arc
Exclusive: Audiences seem to have enjoyed 9-1-1 paying homage to The Poseidon Adventure.
Bobby and Athena’s three-episode cruise ship disaster came to a dramatic conclusion during the March 28 episode which, after seven days of multi-platform viewing, became the series’ most-watched telecast in more than 2 years.
According to Disney, the episode drew 10.72M viewers in seven days of viewing across ABC, Hulu and digital platforms. That’s nearly double the audience of 5.5M that tuned in live + same-day.
Among adults 18-49, the episode was up 3% over the previous week with a 2.18 rating.
Since making the move to ABC for Season 7, 9-1-1 has been off to a solid start. In March, the premiere episode set a streaming record for the network, scoring its most-streamed day ever on Hulu on March 15, one day after Season 7 debuted, tallying 1.6M hours.
Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, the series follows the lives of L.

9-1-1 is adding a face from Bobby’s (Peter Krause) past for the second half of Season 7.
According to Deadline, Malcolm-Jamal Warner has landed a four-episode arc as Amir.
Amir is a nurse in a hospital’s burn unit with a surprising connection to Bobby.
Details about how the pair come into contact have not been disclosed, but given that we know Amir’s profession, there’s a good chance it will result from a character winding up in that unit.
If Amir’s tie is to Bobby, we expect it to be someone from the 118.
Let’s hope it isn’t Buck (Oliver Stark). He needs a break after his brush with death after being struck by lightning.
Could Malcolm Jamal-Warner become a new series regular?
It’s unclear whether the four episodes could become something more because 9-1-1 has already earned a Season 8 renewal at ABC.

When 9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear signed up on Twitter (now known as X), he chose a telling handle to denote his legacy as a screenwriter and director: @Cancelledagain. “I was sort of infamous for all of my thundering failures over the years,” explains Minear. “Firefly lasted one season, Terriers one season, The Inside one season, Drive went for six episodes. Everything was canceled, so I just called myself ‘cancelled again,’ which actually worked out for me because these are all beloved little cult shows now.”
With the seventh season of 9-1-1, which he created with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, underway and a milestone 100th episode premiering April 4, Minear now has a big, long-running show on his hands, plus a successful spinoff in 9-1-1: Lone Star, which will debut its fifth season in the fall. So much so that he’s considering a name change if he returns to the social media platform.

Dr. Death, move over; there's a new doctor aboard: Dr. Odyssey.
Dr. Odyssey, a new series just greenlit by ABC from prolific and talented producer Ryan Murphy, who has marked his return to 20th Television, under the Disney umbrella.
We don't know what exactly Dr. Odyssey is about, but we do know that Joshua Jackson is set to take on the lead role.
The Dawson's Creek star joins this assumed medical procedural as the title character, whose charming personality and wit help him get what he wants.
That's all we know of the character so far, as no additional details will be released, as is typical for a Ryan Murphy series.
Ryan Murphy Sets His Sights on New Procedural
Murphy has quite an impressive resume, and his procedurals are known to do well.

New network, same old problems for the 118 family.
After 9-1-1's unceremonious cancellation after six seasons on Fox, the ambitious drama landed at ABC for season seven. And even though this was the first new hour in ten months, the series returned like it never left.
9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 1 was prime 9-1-1 in all the ways that matter. From the emergencies to the laughs to the angst to the heartbreak and everything in between. 9-1-1's new run got off to a blazing hot start.
When we last left Los Angeles, the 118, Athena, and Maddie were dealing with the aftermath of an overpass collapse and various personal struggles. But 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 18 wrapped in a way that left everyone hopeful about the future.
Bathena were going on their much-delayed honeymoon, while Madney was preparing to wed, and Henren was ready to expand their family.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “9-1-1” Season 7 premiere.
The Season 7 premiere of “9-1-1” opened in a therapist’s office. In hushed tones, LAPD patrol sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) explained that she’s scared to go on a cruise with her husband for a very “9-1-1” reason: She was traumatized as a child by the 1972 ABC disaster thriller “The Poseidon Adventure.” As the flashback unfolds, scenes from the Irwin Allen disaster movie flash on screen along with a vintage ABC logo.
It’s a silly, so-on-the-nose-it’s-brilliant moment that’s perfect for one of television’s wildest shows. “9-1-1” is back, and it’s found a new home on ABC.
“That was so important to me,” series creator, writer and executive producer Tim Minear told TheWrap about the film nod. Dubbed the “Master of Disaster,” Allen defined the disaster film genre through movies such as “The Towering Inferno” and “The Swarm.

What a rescue! After Fox axed 9-1-1 right before the writers’ strike last summer, ABC snapped up the drama about Los Angeles’ first responders. And seven seasons in, these heroes remain as disaster movie–ready as ever. “I have discovered that [showrunner] Tim Minear has aspired to be television’s Irwin Allen,” says Peter Krause, referencing the “Master of Disaster” ’70s filmmaker, “because we’ve done an earthquake, a tidal wave….” (Credit: Disney/Chris Willard) Now, to make a splash in their new home, “we’re doing The Poseidon Adventure and making no mystery of it,” Minear says, adding that the opening minutes feature “an absolute tribute to Irwin Allen.” As viewers know, Bobby and his wife, LAPD sergeant Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett), are setting sail on a belated honeymoon cruise. (Expect to see a couple of familiar faces on board.) ...

Last year, we heard that Gene Simmons of the rock band Kiss would be launching a new production company with Gary Hamilton (so the company is appropriately called Simmons/Hamilton Productions), and the first project they had given the greenlight was a shark thriller called Deep Water – with Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin attached to take the helm of the film! That film has since made its way through production, and a couple days ago we learned that the cast includes Aaron Eckhart of Harlin’s The Bricklayer, Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi), Molly Wright (Netflix’s True Spirit), Angus Sampson (Mad Max: Fury Road), Kelly Gale (Plane), singer and actor Li Wenhan, who is a member of the Chinese-Korean K-Pop group Uniq, and Nashi (Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms). Now a first look image has made its way online, and it shows the characters played by Eckhart and Wright.

“When we were developing the show, we got all these experts in one room and asked: ‘How do you hack a train?’ An hour later, they said: ‘This is scary. We could easily do it now, between ourselves’,” says writer Nick Leather.
“We will do for trains what ‘Jaws’ did for sharks.”
Produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films and set to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early 2024, “Nightsleeper” is directed by Jamie Magnus Stone and John Hayes.
While Abby Aysgarth (Alexandra Roach) at the U..K’s National Cyber Security Centre is trying her best to stop the train, some remaining passengers also join forces – including off-duty cop Joe Roag (“Peaky Blinders” actor Joe Cole). But they only have six hours and one satellite phone.

To date there have only been two movies filmed in space – the Russian comedy Yolki 5 had a bit on the International Space Station, as did this year’s The Challenge – and :a[Tom Cruise and Doug Liman]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/tom-cruise-action-movie-space/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} are supposed to be working with SpaceX on a feature shot in space. Given how many movies there are _about space, that’s not many. And, you know, fair enough. It’s hard to film a movie in space. The lack of gravity would play havoc with the clapperboard, for one thing.

When we sat down for a preview of Still Wakes the Deep at Gamescom, it wasn’t under the circumstances you might expect.
With horror titles like this, you ideally want to experience them in the right conditions. You know, a quiet, dimly lit room with no distractions or reminders of the outside world. That way you can really get lost in the nightmare that the developers have meticulously crafted for you.
That’s not the situation we found ourselves in here though. Instead, we were in the middle of a bustling, sweaty convention centre in Germany, surrounded by bright florescent lights, as well as the chatter of industry professionals networking away, in addition to folk ordering themselves more bratwurst & pretzels.
So it wasn’t a very spooky atmosphere (which obviously couldn’t be helped) and we doubt that even P.T. would have been very effective under those conditions.

1995 wasn’t a good year for Sylvester Stallone at the multiplex. His summer tentpole, Judge Dredd, flopped domestically, and it was quickly followed by Richard Donner’s Assassins, which only grossed $30 million at the domestic box office. While Sly’s career had seen a few slumps, his straightforward action movies typically performed, and the failure of those two films put his clout as one of the world’s biggest stars in jeopardy. In this episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited, we’re going to talk about a movie that was supposed to be a big-budget, commercial change of pace for the actor but wound up being the last would-be blockbuster he’d star in for years. That’s right; we’re going to talk about Rob Cohen’s Daylight.
Flashback to the mid-nineties. Sylvester Stallone had launched a major comeback with Cliffhanger and followed it up with two more global blockbusters,...

No one took movie stardom more seriously than Steve McQueen. Once the actor became a certified box-office draw in the early 1960s on the strength of "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape," he got incredibly picky about his projects. McQueen knew his tough, taciturn type, and he rarely played against it. He was also disinclined to play anything other than the lead, and he demanded to be paid at his market value.
This proved problematic when he signed on to play heroic fireman Thomas O'Halloran in Irwin Allen's "The Towering Inferno." All-star disaster movies were quite the rage in the early 1970s, and were not looked down upon critically. George Seaton's 1970 adaptation of Arthur Hailey's "Airport" earned 10 Academy Award nominations, with Helen Hayes winning Best Supporting Actress. Three years later, Ronald Neame's "The Poseidon Adventure" racked up eight nominations, and two wins (for Best Original...

For most actors, winning an Oscar is seen as the absolute pinnacle of a Hollywood career. For a select group of performers, though, one simply isn’t enough.
There have been 44 different actors to have won multiple awards, the first coming in 1937 when Luise Rainer became the original two-time Oscar darling.
Some manage to win every time they are nominated. Others, such as the inimitable Meryl Streep, have careers peppered with nominations, winning only when the so-called narrative dictates.
In 2021, Anthony Hopkins took home his second statuette, for his role in The Father. The year before, Renée Zellweger took home her second Oscar after playing Judy Garland in Judy.
In 2020, Mahershala Ali picked up his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Best Picture winner Green Book. He previously won for Moonlight in 2017.
Here are the actors with the most Oscar wins.

Stella Stevens is the actress known for playing Stella Purdy in The Nutty Professor (1963) and starring alongside Elvis Presley in Girls! Girls! Girls! Sadly, Ms. Steven passed away on Friday in Los Angeles after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Her death was confirmed by her son, actor-producer Andrew Stevens, and her long-time friend John O’Brien.
A former Playboy centerfold from January 1960, Stevens participated in a screen test by 20th Century Fox as a part of launching her Hollywood career. She signed on the dotted line with Paramount and Columbia through the ’60s, appearing opposite Elvis Presley in Girls! Girls! Girls!, a role that sent her star soaring. She played Stella Purdy opposite Jerry Lewis’ Prof. Julius Kelp in The Nutty Professor, then acted in such films as Advance to the Rear, Synanon, The Silencers, Rage, How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life, The Mad Room, and more.

Stella Stevens, the screen siren of the 1960s who brought sweet sexiness to such films as The Nutty Professor, Too Late Blues and The Ballad of Cable Hogue, has died. She was 84.
Stevens died Friday in Los Angeles, her son, actor-producer-director Andrew Stevens, told The Hollywood Reporter. “She had been in hospice for quite some time with Stage 7 Alzheimer’s,” he said.
Shining brightest in light comedies, the blond, blue-eyed actress appeared as a shy beauty contestant from Montana in Vincente Minnelli’s The Courtship of Eddie’s Father (1963), portrayed a headstrong nun in Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows! Way back in 2018, the "Three Identical Strangers" documentary shocked viewers around the world as it told the story of three triplets who were separated at birth. The film chronicled the journey of Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman as they discovered that they were identical triplets who were placed with different adoptive families as part of a scientific experiment. Now, their story is being turned into a limited TV series under Sony Pictures Television, with Ben Stiller in talks to star as all three brothers.

Ask any fan of "The Simpsons" to rattle off their top episodes, and chances are it won't take long before they get to "Marge vs. the Monorail." It's widely regarded as one of the all-time classics in the show's three-plus decades run, and for good reason. It was the brainchild of Conan O'Brien and features several top-notch guest voice actors. Obviously, the big one is frequent "Simpsons" guest Phil Hartman, whose con artist character Lyle Lanley has become iconic for his "The Music Man"-inspired song and dance numbers. But the episode also features an extremely memorable guest turn from a beloved actor from a classic 1960s television series.
We're talking, of course, about Leonard Nimoy, most famous for directing "Three Men and a Baby." Well, that and playing Mr. Spock in "Star Trek." The late, great actor and director plays himself — more or less — as a celebrity guest on...

A rattling yet goofily constructed disaster movie is elevated by the actor taking on a self-confessed ‘money job’ yet turning it into art
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Ben Stiller talked about working on The Royal Tenenbaums with Gene Hackman and finally getting up the nerve, two days before the shoot ended, to tell the intimidating Hackman how much he loved The Poseidon Adventure and how it changed his life and made him want to become a film-maker. As Stiller recalled, Hackman gruffly responded: “Oh yeah, money job.”
The exchange did not go as Stiller hoped, but he was firm in his conclusion: “Even if it was a money job for Hackman, it was the most incredible money-job performance I’ve ever seen.”...

At the 67th Golden Globe Awards in 2010, James Cameron’s “Avatar” triumphed on two of its four nominations, in the categories of Best Drama and Best Director. At the time, the groundbreaking sci-fi epic was one week away from becoming the highest-grossing film of all time and, in Cameron’s mind, was just the start of an expansive series. Now that its first sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” is finally complete, there are new box office and awards records on the horizon. For instance, the “Avatar” franchise could be the first to ever achieve two top Golden Globe wins.
Gold Derby’s current Golden Globes predictions show “Avatar: The Way of Water” being this year’s seventh likeliest Best Drama Film contender, with Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” being the solid frontrunner. Cameron’s history with this category dates back to 1998, when his “Titanic” won this and three other awards,...

Adam Sandler let his two daughters write his hilarious, self-deprecating speech as he accepted a Career Tribute award at the 2022 Gotham Awards Monday, Nov. 28.
Sandler started the speech by joking that his two kids called him out for not having the energy to write his own speech before offering to do it for him. Sandler agreed and noted that his kids had just one other condition: “Will you do the speech in that goofy Southern accent you do all your dumb speeches in?” Of course, he obliged.

Adam Sandler was the recipient of a career tribute at the Gotham Awards on Monday night, and the comedian/surprise indie darling took the opportunity to deliver a speech “written” by his two teenage daughters that brought the house down with its vascillating descriptions of self-loathing and exaggerated self-importance on the part of the “Hustle” actor.
And luckily, the full speech is now available to watch online.
“Dear well-dressed dignitaries, highly educated hipsters and various other plus ones of the Gotham Awards,” the speech began. “Thank you for giving our daddy Adam Sandler this prestigious all-time, primetime, Goat achievement tribute award, or whatever this frankly disturbing object is supposed to f—king represent. It means a lot to him, seeing as most of the awards on his trophy shelf are shaped like popcorn buckets, blimps or fake mini-Oscars that say ‘Father of the Year’ which he sadly purchased himself while...

James Winburn racked up around 80 credits during his career as a stuntman, but for genre fans there is one credit that really stands out from the pack: Winburn was the stunt double for iconic slasher Michael Myers in director John Carpenter‘s 1978 classic Halloween (watch it Here). In the moment where Dr. Loomis shoots Myers six times, sending him tumbling off a balcony, that’s Winburn performing the stunt. Sadly, it has been reported that Winburn passed away at the age of 85.
Winburn’s manager Peter DeLorme confirmed the news to TMZ, saying he passed away this past Saturday, November 19, in a Los Angeles hospital after a short illness. It was quite short, because Winburn attended a convention in the United Kingdom just three weeks ago. The company that put on that convention, which was called For the Love of Horror, said Winburn “was an absolute pleasure to work with...

One of the first to play one of the big screen’s biggest horror icons, James Winburn donned the Michael Myers mask in John Carpenter’s original Halloween back in 1978, and we’ve learned the sad news this week that the legendary stuntman has passed away at the age of 85.
Winburn passed away on November 19 following an undisclosed illness, EW reports.
A few people, including Nick Castle, played Michael Myers in the original Halloween, with James Winburn performing the memorable balcony stunt in the horror classic’s climax.
“I put on the Michael Myers mask a number of times,” Winburn said during a Halloween Q&a session years back, noting that he filled in whenever John Carpenter needed Michael Myers to do things Nick Castle, Tony Moran and various others could not. Winburn added during that same convention interview, “I doubled [for] whatever John wanted me to do.”
