Oddly before watching Ghosts In The Machine (2016), I had viewed a news story on a new small retro video store in Burbank, California catering to giving people the nostalgic tape experience similar to vinyl records. This idea is essentially the plot of Ghosts In The Machine (2016) aka The House Of VHS in which six people find an old Vcr in an abandoned French house. The machine turns out to be magical and a curse. A title change for this film with no ties to musical albums, songs or other works.
The script gives the impression that this was either an idea cast aside or one that was lying around and cobbled together from a shorter work. Treading the same ground as The Ringu series, Mystery Science Theater 3000 (which I detest) of wisecracking older films and the theme has now taken over by the ‘Found Footage’ genre in the vastly superior V/H/S franchise.

Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order is the third film in a trilogy that The Asylum began in Ape vs Monster and continued in Ape vs Mecha Ape. Or more likely the third film in a series that will last as long as there are megabudget Kong vs Godzilla films to provide inspiration for their mockbuster franchise.
Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order starts in 2007, Abraham the chimp is orbiting Earth when something large approaches the capsule and briefly cuts off contact between and NASA. Seventeen years later, the now kaiju-sized simian is angrily stomping around his home on Watkins Island, much to the concern of Hank and Mariana.

Almost seven years after its inaugural season aired, the FX anthology series “Feud” has finally returned for a second stand-alone installment. Whereas its first season dramatized the bitter rivalry between classic film actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, its second – subtitled “Capote vs. The Swans” – tells the story of how author Truman Capote betrayed his friendships with half a dozen New York socialites by deviously incorporating scandalous details from their personal lives into the novel “Answered Prayers.” Take a look through our photo gallery comparing the new season’s eight main cast members to the real people they portray.
Like “Feud: Bette and Joan,” “Capote vs. The Swans” is (partially) set in the 1960s, during which Capote began writing “Answered Prayers.” Although he sporadically continued to work on the book over the next two decades, he failed to finish it before his death in 1984 and instead only witnessed the publication...

There’s something inherently unsettling about inanimate objects that move on their own accord. Especially if they happen to resemble people. Which is what makes dolls so perfect for the horror genre; the uncanny valley of it all heightens the fear response in audiences.
This week’s streaming picks belong to the killer doll subgenre. These pint-sized homicidal maniacs deliver plenty of scares, heart, humor, and occasionally a great fashion sense.

No relation to the anime of the same name or the Don Bluth film Titan A.E. for that matter, this Attack on Titan is – you guessed it – another creatively titled film from The Asylum. This one justifies its title by having a rebel faction on Saturn’s moon Titan object to Earth’s deal with the government to harvest water crystals. Since they launch an attack on us, the film, whose original title, Alien Space Battle, still appears in the end credits would be more accurately called Attack from Titan. But that just doesn’t sound the same.
After an attack on a freighter carrying those water crystals back to Earth Citizen Prime Ortiz orders Max Reece to put together a mission to rescue it. There’s just one problem, the only...

We asked for the return of short, stupid movies, and The Asylum answered. In light of Elizabeth Banks’ insane horror comedy Cocaine Bear, parody film distributor The Asylum has announced a follow-up film of sorts called Attack of the Meth Gator.
“Hold our bear… I mean, beer,” The Asylum tweeted, attaching a potential poster for the film. “Coming for your life this summer.”
Loosely based on a 2019 news article about police warning residents in Flordia to refrain from flushing methamphetamine down their toilets, the film stars Robbie Rist (Oliver from The Brady Bunch) and Patrick Labyorteaux (Little House on the Prairie). The film is set for release this summer.
Not much else is known about Attack of the Meth Gator, but if it’s to follow Cocaine Bear, you can expect an alligator to ingest a lot of meth and then kill people, which sounds pretty fun. The company assured...

Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) screenwriter Jimmy Warden has said that he has ideas for multiple sequels to the film, and some movie-goers have already let it be known that they’re hoping and waiting for a movie that would be called Cocaine Shark. But while we wait to see if Cocaine Bear is going to spawn a franchise, the mockbuster masters at The Asylum have unveiled a poster of the mockbuster they have made to cash in on the Cocaine Bear hype: a movie called Attack of the Meth Gator! An exact release date hasn’t been announced, but we can expect to see Attack of the Meth Gator sometime this summer.
We can only assume that Attack of the Meth Gator is going to be about an alligator going on a killing spree after consuming meth, much like Cocaine Bear is about a bear going on a killing spree after consuming cocaine.

Each week Joe Lipsett will highlight a key scene or interaction in S02 of Don Mancini’s Chucky series to consider how the show is engaging with and contributing to queer horror.
With the action cutting back exclusively to the School of Incarnate Lord, this week’s “Chucky” delivers an hour focused solely on the kids. And while the demise of Trevor by Hulk Chucky is sure to be the episode’s biggest talking point, that’s the buzzy cliffhanger, not the meat of “Hail, Mary!”
Most of the episode is dedicated to guilt, penance, and forgiveness. It’s built into Sister Catherine (Andrea Carter)’s art history lesson; it falls from the lips of Devon Sawa’s Father Bryce (numerous times); and it’s a struggle that continues to drive a wedge between not just Jake (Zackary Arthur) and Devon (Björgvin Arnarson), but also Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), who...

Devil’s Triangle is the latest film from The Asylum, kings of the mockbuster, who – this time around – give us an original story, set in that most famous of mysterious “landmarks”, the Bermuda Triangle. And who doesn’t love a good Bermuda Triangle movie? Hollywood certainly does. Hell, we got an entire TV show inspired by the urban legend.
Devil’s Triangle reminded me very much of 1978’s The Return of Captain Nemo – that film, at the time, married old-fashioned tech with modern-day stylings, whereas Devil’s Triangle takes futuristic elements of the Atlanteans and transplants wonder-day folk into them. And given that I’ve always Loved The Return of Captain Nemo, I felt...

Happy Anniversary — well, sort of “happy” — to Sarah Paulson, since it’s exactly 25 years since Variety ran a review of her feature film debut, “Levitation.” In the indie, she plays a pregnant teenager. Critic Leonard Klady on April 14, 1997, said it was a grim saga with “a strong cast” who were “not ably supported by the script.”
It’s not the most promising debut and the film was quickly forgotten, but Paulson continued to work.
Like many New York actors, she worked on stage and made her TV debut in a 1994 “Law & Order” episode, about a year after her high school graduation.
She continued to do theater, including Broadway’s 2005 “The Glass Menagerie” with Jessica Lange, and films, such as the Oscar winner “12 Years a Slave,” where she proved herself a team player by working hard to promote the movie, even though she had a relatively small role.

Since The Asylum isn’t smart enough to know when to stop they’ve just released yet another shark film, Megalodon Rising. Since I’m not that smart either, I’m reviewing it. But you are smart enough not to go near one of their films without checking it out first, you’re reading it.
A Chinese warship with what appears to be a crew of three is conducting a test of a top secret espionage device just off the US coast. The test is deemed a success but moments later a giant shark rams and sinks the vessel. The only survivor is a scientist Dr. Lee (Freda Yifan Jing). She’s picked up by the USS King, under the command of Captain Lynch (Wynter Eddins). A Chinese destroyer turns up demanding the immediate return of Dr.

The year of 1969 saw the moon landing of the Apollo 11’s Eagle module, Richard Nixon sworn in as the 37th president of the United States, the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village ushering in the gay rights movement, the Tate-La Bianca murders by the Manson Family, the landmark Woodstock Music and Arts Fair which attracts 400,000, the tragic and violent Rolling Stones concert at the Altamont Speedway and even Tiny Tim marrying Miss Vicki on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”
But one major event was basically ignored by the mainstream media: the Harlem Cultural Arts Festival which took place June 29-August 24 at the Mount Morris Park. Founded by Tony Lawrence, the festival celebrating Black pride, music and culture features such landmark performers as Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder, The Fifth Dimension and Mahalia Jackson. The Undoing has been slowly unraveling each twist in its season-long murder mystery over the past five weeks, with shocking reveals and red herrings galore. But heading into this Sunday’s finale (HBO, 9/8c), we still don’t have the answer to our most pressing question: Who killed Elena Alves?
Like any good mystery, The Undoing has kept us guessing about the killer’s identity every step of the way. (In fact, we’ve even changed our minds a few times mid-episode.) And when we scan down the cast of characters, just about all of them could be the killer,...

FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story” has received its fair share of Emmys love over the years, including 16 total wins. However, one person that’s cruelly never heard his name called on nominations morning is Evan Peters. The 33-year-old actor has been with “AHS” since day (only missing out on last year’s “1984” installment) and is set to return next year in the still-unnamed Season 10. Simply put, we think the Emmy Awards are dead wrong for snubbing Peters all these years, particularly when it comes to the following four characters. These career-best performances really wowed us and should have raked in the awards for Peters … if only voters weren’t so scared. Agree or disagree with our picks? Be sure to sound off down in the comments section.

If anyone knows a thing or two about bagging Golden Globe Award nominations, it’s Ryan Murphy, who has produced a total of 14 program bids and five victories for 11 different TV projects thus far. Now, he’s looking at another potential successful run with five shows eligible at next year’s ceremony, including his newest Netflix series “Ratched,” the eight-episode inaugural season of which was released September 18 on Netflix. Will it be Murphy’s fourth show to make the cut for Best Drama Series?
The three shows that precede it are “Nip/Tuck” (2004-05), which won on its second try; “American Horror Story” (2012), which was still billed as a drama series for its debut installment, “Murder House,” before officially turning into an anthology series and shifting over to limited for its succeeding outings; and “Pose” (2019). “9-1-1” and its spin-off series “9-1-1: Lone Star” are Murphy’s two other dramas in contention...

Horror and television have always been a bit of an awkward fit. What’s scary and what’s bingeable sometimes seem mutually exclusive. Horror requires that you suspend your disbelief and the longer it asks of your attention span, the higher the risk that the tension wanes.
Still, in the modern streaming era, there are plenty of horror TV shows that get the spooky job done. Gathered on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and HBO Max are some truly great bingeable options to elevate the heart rate. Here we’ve compiled the very best of the best. What follows are the 31 best streaming horror TV shows.
American Horror Story
Available on: Netflix, Hulu
Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story is revolutionary in quite a few ways. Not only did it help usher in a renewed era of anthology storytelling on television, it also was arguably the first successful network television horror show since The X-Files.

Which Emmy records were set or matched on Sunday and which shows fell short of establishing a new benchmark?
“Schitt’s Creek” came into the primetime ceremony with just two Creative Arts award (casting and costumes). It was defeated by “Insecure” in the editing race and “black-ish” in hairstyling, marking the only occasion this year in which a show that had been snubbed for Best Comedy Series beat a Best Comedy Series nominee head-to-head. “Schitt’s Creek” pulled off an unprecedented sweep of the main comedy categories, going seven for seven. “Angels in America” won the equivalent seven awards in the limited field in 2004. “Hill Street Blues” is the only drama that has come close to a full sweep. Best Drama Supporting Actress was the only major award that it lost in 1981 for its debut season.
With nine wins in total, the final edition of “Schitt’s Creek” ranks as the Emmys’ all-time most-awarded season of a comedy.

Really, was anyone out there crying out for a Nurse Ratched origin story? The trailers for Netflix’s Ratched — premiering this Friday, Sept. 18; I’ve seen the first four episodes — bill the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest villain as “one of the world’s most iconic characters,” but as played by Oscar winner Louise Fletcher in the original 1975 film, the psych-ward nurse is a rather banal authority figure without much depth or dimension to explore.
Still, Ratched — the latest offering from uber producer Ryan Murphy — insists on conjuring up an origin story for her anyway: a campy, gruesome,...

“American Horror Story” fans who missed seeing Sarah Paulson during last year’s “1984” cycle can now breathe a sigh of relief: she’s returning for Season 10. Sure, the next installment has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Paulson will officially be back when it eventually airs on FX. (See the Season 10 cast list.) This Emmy winner for “The People v. O.J. Simpson” has been nominated for five “AHS” seasons through the years: “Asylum,” “Coven,” “Freak Show,” “Hotel” and “Cult.”
In anticipation of Paulson’s return to the franchise, we’ve ranked all nine of her “American Horror Story” characters from worst to best. Does Your #1 choice match ours? Sound off in the comments section to let us know your personal rankings.

So what can we say that we learned about Ratched? Well, it’s going to look a lot like American Horror Story in a way considering the look and feel of it, and of course, the fact that Nurse Ratched would have likely been quite at home in a couple of seasons of AHS, namely Asylum and quite possibly Freak Show. But with Sarah Paulson as the lead in the series, it’s likely that this might even play out that way since one can state with all honesty that she’s a talented and gifted actress, but when digging a little deeper

Just looking at the series description, you might be wondering if Netflix's Ratched is part of the American Horror Story universe. Ryan Murphy's upcoming horror series stars Sarah Paulson as Nurse Ratched, the infamous villain from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and explores her early career in a disturbing asylum and how she became the legendary villain. Although it sounds like it would fit into the horror anthology just fine, Ratched is not, in fact, part of American Horror Story.
Ratched definitely brings in some of the themes that previous seasons of American Horror Story have. The most obvious connection, of course, would have been season two, aka American Horror Story: Asylum, which seems to be at least a little inspired by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and similar stories of mental institutions as the site of horrors. There's even the cast connection: Paulson, who's playing Nurse Ratched now,...

Margaret Booth is nominated for an Emmy … sort of.
When the 2020 nominations were announced on July 28, “American Horror Story: 1984” found itself with four bids, including two for makeup. The Emmy ballot goes into detail about all the hard work that went into the show’s makeup, including for the character of Margaret (Leslie Grossman), who memorably slices off her own ear. Alas, the actress herself was snubbed, but at least the makeup teams were recognized for crafting the grotesque scene.
This ninth season of FX’s horror anthology series aired last September-November and told the story of traumatized campers at the hauntingly tubular Camp Redwood. Besides its pair of makeup bids, “Ahs: 1984” also earned nominations for sound editing and sound mixing. The winners of these four Emmy categories will be announced at the Creative Arts ceremony in September. (See details on “American Horror Story” Season 10.)

Nearly three years after landing Sarah Paulson-starrer Ratched, Netflix announced that Ryan Murphy’s asylum drama series, inspired by the diabolical Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, will premiere September 18. The streamer also released some first-look images — they and the key art are below.
Ratched, from Murphy and Ian Brennan and executive produced by the film’s producer Michael Douglas, is set in mid-20th century Northern California where Mildred Ratched (Paulson) lands a job at a psychiatric hospital as a nurse. The series will follow the nurse’s first days navigating the mental healthcare system and her journey to head nurse in Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel.
The origin story, created by Evan Romansky, also stars Sharon Stone, Cynthia Nixon, Finn Wittrock, Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Judy Davis, Harriet Harris, Hunter Parrish, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo and Vincent D’Onofrio.

Every era has its Norman Fucking Rockwell, and in the middle of the Seventies, that record was Gene Clark’s No Other. With its country-rockified version of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, the lush, self-consciously poetic album from the former singer and songwriter in the Byrds occupied its own patch of land in 1974. It was a cohesive body of work with a sustained, melancholic mood. Like Del Rey’s equally L.A.-centric record of four-plus decades later, No Other was an LP you could put on and lose...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s episode of “American Horror Story: 1984”)
“American Horror Story: 1984” added a couple new characters in its seventh episode on Wednesday — played by two very familiar faces to fans of the franchise: Lily Rabe and Dylan McDermott.
Rabe played the mother of Mr. Jingles (John Carroll Lynch), who worked as a cook at Camp Redwood back in 1948, when it went by another name. “American Horror Story: 1984” added a couple new characters in its seventh episode on Wednesday — played by two very familiar faces to fans of the franchise: Lily Rabe and Dylan McDermott.

In her time reigning over American Horror Story, Jessica Lange learned to set some boundaries with Ryan Murphy. "There are things that I tell [Ryan Murphy] I won't do," the actress said at a recent press conference for The Politician, her third and newest series with the television mastermind. As reported by Decider, Lange added, "We have come to a kind of understanding."
