The medium of cinema is brilliantly, endlessly malleable. It's an art form able to communicate so many perspectives, stories, emotions and the like, yet there are some genres that feel especially inherent to the medium. Action is undeniably one of these; even the most basic, average action movie combines elements of sound, cinematography, actors giving performances that are equal parts physical and vocal, music, choreography and more. In other words, it takes every element available to the filmmaker to construct a convincing, engaging action sequence, something that can't be exactly replicated in, say, a song, picture, or painting.
Perhaps this is one reason why so many action films dabble in myth: the very construction of an action film requires the establishment of a hyper-reality, so it follows that larger-than-life themes, tropes, and traditions would fit inside such a world. This is a...

Bruce Lee was a famed martial arts expert who completed only a handful of films before his untimely death in 1973 at the age of 32. Let’s take a look back at all 6 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in the Chinatown neighborhood of San Francisco, CA, in 1940, Lee was raised with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He began appearing in several films as a child, often in small bit roles, but abandoned acting to pursue a career in martial arts.
His hiatus from the screen didn’t last long. In 1966, Lee was cast as Kato in the short-lived television adventure “The Green Hornet,” later making appearances as the character on “Batman.” He played a small role in the mystery film “Marlowe” (1969) as a kung fu fighter who destroys private eye James Garner‘s office before suffering a tragic demise.

Hot on the heels of their first collection of Shaw Brothers movies, Shout! Factory’s Shaw Brothers Classics Vol. 2 continues the ongoing, multi-label effort to restore and release notable entries in the Hong Kong studio’s vast catalog. As it did with their previous collection, Shout! limits the selections for this second box set to a concentrated period of the studio’s productions. Whereas the 1967-69 range of the first box showed the studio frantically capitalizing on the breakout success of The One-Armed Swordsmen with a slew of like-minded wuxia films, the broader selection here among the first half of the ’70s finds Shaw Brothers both setting and chasing after trends.
Shout!’s first volume demonstrated how the Shaw Brothers studio made so many functionally identical movies, between the revenge-based plots, sword-based action, and reused sets, that within two years of The One-Armed Swordsmen’s paradigm shift, the house brand was already getting stale.

Bruce Lee may only have lived to the age of 32, but he made an impact on cinema which few people have come close to. He also left it with a massive problem. Thanks to films like The Big Boss and Fist Of Fury, he was already a big star in Hong Kong before he got the call from Warner Bros. which would make him an international megastar. He could fight, he could act, he was bursting with charisma – but six days before Enter The Dragon was released, he suffered a cerebral oedema and died.
It was a tragedy for Lee’s family and friends. It saddened his established fans and the wider martial arts community. Beyond that, something else happened. Millions and millions of new fans, all around the world, began demanding to see more of Lee. The studios with rights to his work quickly responded. Hastily dubbed Hong...

This month marks 50 years since Bruce Lee’s sudden death at the age of 32, and likewise the semicentennial anniversary of his highest-profile feature, Enter the Dragon. Released by Warner Bros. on Aug. 17, 1973, director Robert Clouse’s action film stars Lee as a Shaolin monk recruited by British intelligence to compete in a martial arts tournament and track down a crime boss named Han (Shih Kien). The stakes are raised when Lee learns that the man who killed his sister is working as a bodyguard for Han.
Before Enter the Dragon, Lee was known for playing Kato on the 1960s ABC series The Green Hornet and Batman, and for starring in several kung fu films in the early 1970s, including The Big Boss (1971) and Fist of Fury (1972). But it was Dragon — his second Hollywood movie after a small role in 1969’s James Garner-led Marlowe — that became his signature title and made him a global icon.

The greatest tragedy of Bruce Lee’s all too short life was that he didn’t live to see the premiere of Enter the Dragon. Lee died on July 20, 1973. Enter the Dragon was released six days later.
Four years prior, Lee made a vow to himself that he titled “My Definite Chief Aim.” Handwritten in cursive with his characteristic flair, he wrote “I, Bruce Lee, will be the first highest paid Oriental super star in the United States. I will give the most exciting performances and render the best of quality in the capacity of an actor.” Throughout his career in Hollywood, Lee struggled to make his way, fighting against prejudice and exclusion at every step, in hopes of reaching his goal. And yet he never lived to see the breakthrough success of his masterpiece.

This article contains spoilers for Warrior season 3 episode 6.
When it comes to Bruce Lee Easter eggs, Warrior has been cunningly hiding them in plain sight.
From the first season, there were nods like the tong man named Bolo (Rich Ting), a reference to Bolo Yeung who played the villainous killer with the Herculean physique (also named Bolo) in Enter the Dragon. Similar acknowledgements permeate the series, all the way to season three where one of the locations is an ice factory, just like the setting of The Big Boss. When the lead character Ah Sahm strips down to a white wife-beater T-shirt, it evokes Bruce Lee’s bicep revealing attire in The Way of the Dragon. Keen-eyed fans of fight choreography spot quick references to Lee’s timeless action scenes. Some Warrior fight sequences contain sequences that lift directly from Lee’s films, reimagined to fit in the series. The...

Darius Daulton Jackson has seemingly deleted all traces of Keke Palmer from his Instagram account after publicly shaming her online.
Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Jackson deactivated his Instagram account Wednesday following the backlash he received for calling out his partner, and upon his return fans pointed out that photos of Palmer had been removed. Photos of their newborn son, Leodis, however, remained on his grid.
The drama began Wednesday evening after a viral video of Palmer in a see-through outfit at Usher’s Las Vegas residency show over the Fourth of July holiday surfaced online.
Jackson seemingly shamed Palmer for wearing the sexy fit, in a tweet that featured a viral video of Palmer and the singer embracing while the R&b singer serenaded the “Nope” actress with his hit, “There Goes My Baby.”
“It’s the outfit tho.. you a mom,” Jackson tweeted alongside the clip.

A singularly wacky moment in film history is poked in “Enter the Clones of Bruce.” It surveys the years immediately following Bruce Lee’s untimely 1973 death, when the sudden international thirst for martial arts movies that he’d awoken could seemingly only be slaked by the man himself — or by a host of imitators who popped up under lookalike pseudonyms.
David Gregory’s documentary won’t convince most viewers that the resulting flood of opportunistic cheapies are worth more extensive investigation. But they’re certainly cheesy fun in excerpt, and interviews with surviving participants provide an entertaining window into an anything-goes heyday for Hong Kong cinema. Premiering in Tribeca’s midnight section, this high-kicking flashback should appeal to the same fans who previously enjoyed such prior psychotronic excavations as “Not Quite Hollywood,” “Electric Boogaloo” or this director’s own prior investigations of cult figures Al Adamson and Richard Stanley.

Having worked with Bruce Lee on “The Big Boss” and “Fist of Fury” was one of the great achievements in the career of Hong Kong director Lo Wei, as it propelled the actor’s reputation as well as the filmmaker’s. However, while shooting the latter, he also collaborated with one of the future stars of the martial-arts-genre, as Jackie Chan did some of the stunts on “Fist of Fury” and left quite an impression with Wei who followed his career, until he was certain Chan could be the next star on the horizon. Since he also saw something of the charisma and talent of Lee in Chan, it was perhaps logical to make him star in “New Fist of Fury”, a somewhat loose sequel to the 1972 original. While it is not on the same level as the former, it has a few qualities worth mentioning, especially in the second half,...

MusicThough Bappi Lahiri is mostly known for his Hindi and Bengali songs, he had also composed several songs in the south that became big hits.Tnm StaffFacebookBappi Lahiri, the king of disco in India, has passed away at 69. While the musician was known for several Bengali songs, his Hindi hits like 'Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja', ‘Yaad Aa Raha Hai’, ‘Bambai Se Aaya Mera Dost’, ‘Tamma Tama Loge’ and others made him popular in Bollywood. He also had a body of work in the south Indian film industries. Kids who grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s in Tamil Nadu, for instance, would certainly be familiar with ‘Naan Oru Disco Dancer’, the evergreen Anand Babu song in which the actor performs wizardry on the dance floor. It's hard to imagine a time before Jackie Chan was a certified action star, but in the early 70s, his international (and especially domestic) success was far from a sure thing. Hong Kong's film industry floundered for years after the untimely death of Bruce Lee, and for years the industry tried and failed to fill the void that Lee had left behind. Chan, a former stuntman who'd appeared in some of Lee's best work, was one such contender. He worked on several films with Lo Wei, (the mind behind classic Bruce Lee films like "The Big Boss" and "Fist of Fury") who...

This review of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was first published on August 23.
Marvel Comics creators Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin originally conceived martial-arts hero Shang-Chi as a loose composite of the imagery and mythologies of Bruce Lee, Caine from “Kung Fu” (whom Lee created), and Sax Rohmer’s pulp villain Dr. Fu Manchu. If Marvel Studios has thus far made slow progress in developing solo adventures for its many superheroes of color, it takes another successful stride, if not quite as sizable as “Black Panther,” with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” a film that builds simultaneously on the lexicon of 50 years of Hong Kong action films and the thematic boilerplate of MCU origin stories.
Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”) injects an earnest, charming humility to the character’s introduction into Marvel’s world of larger than life conflicts, while Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh...

With only a couple of clicks of the dial and a little dash of hybrid vigor, the hackneyed can be made fresh again, a point proven by Tran Quoc Bao’s silly and special little kung fu comedy “The Paper Tigers.” Balancing the naive structure of an old Shaw Brothers movie (a vengeance mission with an escalating series of fights en route to the Big Boss showdown) with the kind of male-midlife-comedy schtick that bought Judd Apatow a house or six, Tran’s irresistibly good-humored debut is a diverting blend of Hong Kong and Hollywood that delivers, on a slender, Kickstarter-enhanced budget, a rousing roundhouse hug to both traditions.
Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) have become estranged in the 25 years since they were “The Three Tigers,” disciples of kung fu master Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) — scenes that play out with younger actors in lovingly re-created garage VHS footage.

I’m a fan of Hong Kong film maker Stephen Chow. There’s something about Chow’s cinematic sensibility that resonates with me. Dark humor, genre satire, social criticism, and off the wall ideas are common to all his movies. I enjoy Chow’s flawed, somewhat narcissistic, but redeemable characters. His action staging is always imaginative. He’s a genuine comedic auteur, so I’m offering some Chinese trailers of his movies in the hope that you will find his body of work worth exploring.
Stephen Chow grew up in a Hong Kong working class suburb. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of his idol Bruce Lee, and study his style of martial arts, after seeing Lee’s break-out movie The Big Boss ( US: The Chinese Connection) when he was 11. But after his parents’ divorce, Chow could not afford the cost of tuition. Nonetheless, he studied acting, starting in...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t seen “The Series Finale,” the ninth and final episode of “WandaVision” on Disney Plus.
“WandaVision,” the first big television show of 2021, ended up being both an oddity and an inevitability. While the Disney Plus series is from the powerful production house of Marvel Studios, it also proved to be a deliciously strange, surprisingly poignant reflection on grief, family and community. Watching Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) wind her way through decades of sitcom history, layers of her own trauma, and an increasingly tragic love story with her considerate (and synthetic) counterpart Vision (Paul Bettany) became a weekly event that united viewers in a pressing need to know what on earth was going to happen next.
As the series evolved, though, it became clear that fans were watching and appreciating “WandaVision” very differently depending on their level of affection for the ever broadening Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There was a time when watching Bollywood superstar Salman Khan as host during the weekend episodes of Bigg Boss was fun. He would, by turns, be in the mood for jokes and in the mood to tease the housemates. He would come down with admonition, too, once in a while, but things never turned sour, to the point of being off-putting.
On the ongoing season 14 of the show, Salman has mostly been angry and irritated, clearly unhappy with the way things are going on. In a season that should rank among the most boring in the brief history of Bigg Boss, Salman perhaps cannot be blamed.
There's more. Over the past few years, faced with bad box office for films like Tubelight (2017), Race 3 (2018) and Bharat (2019), Salman would invariably fall back on his immense popularity as host of Bigg Boss to maintain a connect with fans, who won't settle for...

While his previous features “The Big Boss” and “Fist of Fury” had established Bruce Lee’s fame in his home country as well as overseas, the two roles also gave him the influence and financial means to start his own production company and finally have the kind of control he had always wanted about the projects he was interested in. Their company’s first project and Lee’s debut as a director was to be “Way of the Dragon”, a movie which, despite its tight budget, introduced movie audiences to a style that would become famous for an entire generation of martial arts-actors such as Jackie Chan and Jet Li. On the outside a typical feature of the genre, including the fight of the good guy against an evil boss and his henchmen, it also combines action sequences, artful fight choreographies as well as a specific kind of Hong Kong...

Although he had become quite famous and successful in the years before, there is certainly no doubt that the release of “Enter the Dragon” marks the greatest triumph in the career of Bruce Lee, as well as the greatest tragedy as it would be his final film before he died at the age of only 32. Nevertheless, even after all these years “Enter the Dragon” remains one of his most influential and most popular works , inspiring films such as the highly successful “John Wick”-franchise and many more. Despite it being relatively low budget, its aesthetics among other features make it feel like a big budget-production, which is also due to the narrative bearing some resemblance to popular James Bond-movies. It is also a feature telling a story about the encounter of East and West, and about the birth of a new kind of hero, which big budget Hollywood seems to have forgotten about.

The beginning of the 1970s marks a very decisive time in the biography of Bruce Lee, as he started to become the man we now know as one of the great icons of martial arts and cinema as a whole, with the huge commercial and critical success of “The Big Boss” (1971). Given this development, Hong Kong producer Raymond Chow, director Lo Wei and Lee decided to continue their fruitful and highly lucrative collaboration just one year later with “Fist of Fury”, a feature based on the popular legend surrounding Huo Yuanjia, a hero of the people who opposed Japanese rule. In the end, the trio managed to continue their former success and created a movie which stands out as a true masterclass in action/ martial arts cinema, but also as a great story about a rebel, a figure Bruce Lee, perhaps like no other actor of his generation, played so well in so many variations.

The success of “The Big Boss” in 1971 not only marked a decisive moment in the career of Bruce Lee and its director Lo Wei, it also ended a long period of uncertainty for the actor who was not sure whether he had any kind of future in the film industry. Even though the production itself was defined by a few bumps on the road, for example, when Lee cut his hand badly on the set or Lo Wei claiming he had to teach Bruce Lee, who was a mere “streetfighter” according to his version, to fight in front of the camera (a rather dubious claim). Nevertheless, the film proved to be a commercial success in Lee’ home country of Hong Kong and would later continue to be released overseas where it gained its star the kind of status as an actor he had hoped for when he had gone to Hollywood.

New Delhi, Dec 10 (Ians) Bigg Boss made a thundering debut on the small screen in 2006. The controversial reality show has made headlines season after season, and has been tagged as one of the highest-rated shows on Indian television. However, it seems the show is devoid of much of its glitter this season.
Bigg Boss in India is based on the show Big Brother, which was first aired on Dutch TV in 1999. Originally sketched as a social experiment, it was designed as The Truman Show in real life. Since that day, Big Brother format has run 448 seasons in 54 franchise countries and territories.
The show also drew inspiration from George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, where Big Brother was a fictional character, a totalitarian dictator. The novel spoke of a future where each and every person would be under constant watch by surveillance cameras, even inside their own homes. The intention was to generate fear,...

The first stop anyone should make as they journey through “Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits,” The Criterion Collection’s towering dedication to late martial arts master and international icon Bruce Lee, is “Water and Vessel,” critic and historian Jeff Chang’s load-bearing essay. For novices, the background Chang has gathered and woven into a tapestry of Lee is essential for contextualizing the five pictures assembled in the set: “The Big Boss,” “Fist of Fury,” “The Way of the Dragon,” “Enter the Dragon,” and “Game of Death.” Think of Chang’s piece as Bruce Lee 101, insight and knowledge procured by an author to whom the name means everything.

In 1973, Bruce Lee died at the young age of 32, six days before the release of his most successful and his first true Hollywood film, Enter the Dragon. Watching his films in 2020 provides a bittersweet enjoyment, knowing how much of a megastar Lee already was, and imagining the immeasurable impact he would have gone on to make over the next decades of his life if it was not cut short. Lee remains one of the most bankable stars of all time, as seen by Enter the Dragon making an estimated $350 million worldwide against an $850,000 budget.
Of his five major leading roles on the big screen, his 1973 megahit is his most composed and impressive, and the film that best exemplified his acting abilities, but as a new box set shows, there’s much more to discover in his short-lived career.
