Rodney Dangerfield, the goggle-eyed comedian who often lamented that he couldn't get no respect, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles; he was 82. Dangerfield passed away at UCLA Medical Center, where he had undergone heart valve replacement surgery on Aug. 25. He suffered a stroke post-surgery and developed infectious and abdominal complications; he also slipped into a coma which, according to his wife Joan, he had emerged from the past week. Health complications had also attended Dangerfield during the past few years, including double bypass surgery in 2000, a mild heart attack in 2001, and brain surgery this past spring. A native of Long Island, Dangerfield (born Jacob Cohen) first hit the comedy circuit, most notably in the Catskills, in the 40s under the name Jack Roy. After becoming a businessman in the 50s, he returned to stand-up in the 60s under the name Rodney Dangerfield, and ultimately opened his own comedy nightclub in 1969, one of the first in the country. With his famous white shirt-red tie combination (now on display in the Smithsonian), Dangerfield coined the catchphrase "I can't get no respect," which would become part of the American cultural lexicon. In the 70s he was almost everywhere, in movies (he debuted in 1971's The Projectionist), television (both series and commercials) and of course the comedy stage. However, it wasn't until the 80s that he had his biggest film hits, a trio of comedies . Caddyshack, Easy Money, and Back to School . that mined his ribald, gregarious persona for laughs. Dangerfield is also credited with discovering a huge number of modern comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Roseanne, Robert Townsend, and Tim Allen, many of whom made recent visits to his bedside. Dangerfield is survived by his wife Joan, thirty years his junior, and two children from a previous marriage. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
