The Beatles made their first of three appearances on CBS’ “The Ed Sullivan Show” on Feb 9, 1964. Sullivan knew he had a really big “shew” that night, telling the audience mainly of teeny-boppers and teenage girls that “our theater’s been jammed with newspapermen and hundreds of photographers from all over the world. And these veterans agree with me that the city never has witnessed the excitement stirred by these youngsters from Liverpool…Now tonight you’re going to be twice entertained by them…Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles.”
Their fans screamed, cried and grabbed their hair when John, Paul, George and Ringo performed “All My Loving,” “Till There Was You” and “She Loves You.” They came back 35 minutes later in the show to sing “I Saw Her Standing There” and their No. 1 hit “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” The ratings for the episode scored to 23.24 million households. Beatlemania was sweeping America before Feb.

Liberace appeared in several feature films including the 19645rock and roll musical When the Boys Meet the Girls.
After a few years of false starts and star Michael Douglas coping with his battle with throat cancer, director Steven Soderberg's biopic of Liberace is set to go into production. Douglas will star as the flamboyant show biz legend and Matt Damon will star as his young lover, Scott Thorson who was with Liberace in his final years. HBO has acquired the property and will finance. As for scenes in which Damon will be seen kissing Douglas, he says he is coping by reminding himself that Douglas is married to Catherine Zeta Jones, thus he will be making out with her by osmosis. the movie will be titled Behind the Candelabra. While names like The Beatles and The Monkees may rule the historic roost when it comes to mop-topped pop icons, a little known group is looking to return to the public’s mind thanks to The Warner Archive.
Following the relatively recent Criterion Collection release of The Monkees’ Head, the Archive has released the rarely discussed gem of a pop picture, entitled Hold On. Starring the chart-topping pop troupe Herman’s Hermits (known for tracks like “A Must To Avoid” and the title track, “Hold On”), Hold On follows the five-some as they go on their Us tour, and must avoid the hordes of screaming women and the occasional star hunter as they wait to find out if a Nasa rocket will have their name adorned on the side of it. Secretly watched by a scientist to see if they are truly worthy of having their name on the rocket,...
