As a horror fan, I was delighted that 2023 not only delivered some top-notch genre films but also that there were enough directed by women to create a 10 best list. Women created a diverse array of horror from psychological thrillers to over-the-top gore comedy to creature features. They looked beyond just final girls to create fascinating, flawed, and sometimes deeply disturbed characters.
I measure progress not by how many positive female characters we get on screen but rather by the diversity and depth of the women driving the stories we see. Kudos to the female talent in front of and behind the camera that created these bold, original works in 2023.

In 1934 Boris Karloff was an unhappy actor, he was one of Universal’s most illustrious stars, yet good parts were scarce, and intelligent horror roles like hen’s teeth—the occasional work at other studios was both a boon and a welcome distraction.
In 1935 the studio loaned him to Columbia for The Black Room, a blood and thunder gothic in which Karloff would play two roles, an aristocrat and his evil twin—a dark fable played out in shadows, but a light at the end of the tunnel for the 47 year old actor who relished a challenge. Refresh for updates… Tributes have been flooding in for Meat Loaf, the prolific singer and actor born Marvin Lee Aday who has died Thursday at 74.
Many of those who worked alongside him as both singer and actor were first to take to Twitter.
Global superstar Cher said she “had so much fun with Meat Loaf” when they released hit single Dead Ringer for Love, adding: “Am I imagining it or are amazing people in the arts dying every day?”
Boy George, another mega music star, wrote: “Rip Meatloaf. Love and prayers to all his family and close friends.”
The singer then joyfully recalled being “turned upside down” by Meat Loaf in a Chinese restaurant in St John’s Wood, London.

Not one, not two, but three agents saw their games go up in flames in Wednesday’s episode of The Challenge, which unleashed yet another security breach that put two veteran agents directly on the chopping block.
While two challengers left the Crater with crushed egos, the third ousted player was deemed medically unfit to continue. While we’d have to double-check the official Challenge record books, it seems Double Agents is (unfortunately) in the running to become the season with the most DQs/quits ever. Let’s recap the episode, shall we?

It must not be an easy feat to play your own twin, but a surprising amount of actors have done it. From Lindsay Lohan in “The Parent Trap” to Paul Rudd in Netflix’s “Living With Yourself” to Mark Ruffalo in HBO’s new series “I Know This Much Is True” here are 19 stars who have played their own twins, clones, and even split-personalities on TV and in movies.
Lindsay Lohan – “The Parent Trap,” “I Know Who Killed Me” Pretty much everyone is familiar with Lohan’s iconic role in ‘The Parent Trap’ remake, but few are familiar with her much more grown-up, darker role in this 2007 psychological thriller in which her she plays two very different versions of a girl named Aubrey Fleming.
Mark Ruffalo – “I Know This Much Is True” He plays twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey in the HBO series, the latter of whom is schizophrenic.

Macario San Sebastian Film Festival has announced it will host a retrospective of about 25 films dedicated to Mexican director Roberto Gavaldón at its 67th edition.
The Jiménez-born filmmaker worked his way up through the ranks of actor, extra and assistant director and scriptwriter before co-directing, making his debut as a solo director in 1945 with The Shack (La Barraca). He would go on to film Macario in 1960, which was selected for Cannes and became the first Mexican film to receive a nomination for the Best Foreign Language Oscar. Its success paved the way for him becoming one of Mexico's most important directors for the next two decades.

Dead Ringer By Charles Borkuis (Blazevox Books, 2017)
The idea of the doppleganger, identity theft and mix up of characters has always played a big part in literature since early on. The piece that initially always comes to mind is Dostoyevsky's "The Double."
In Charles Borkhuis new book of poetry Dead Ringer, we get just that same awkward feeling of mixed and misplaced identity. It is fraught with biting satire, fierce statements of who we are and might or might not be, "that tiny voice again warbling help me, help me" while we/he wander(s) about the chaotic landscape with our/his "identity as the creation of others" as if "words and things were cut from the same suit." As "a lifetime of loose strings come to dance," "nodding in mirror-rhythm," and we never knowing "who's speaking and who's an echo." Borkhuis makes us realize that identity is never a sure thing,...

Some actresses' performances can be much admired while others you virtually devour. I devour any performance by Bette Davis, who often elevated even middling films to something akin to high art. Such a case is evident in her cult classic Dead Ringer, a 1964 thriller that allowed Davis to give a tour de force performance in a dual role. The film itself has a hokey concept, that of two estranged identical twin sisters who are reunited with deadly consequences. Yet, Davis' former leading man and Now, Voyager co-star Paul Henreid directs this otherwise minor screen effort with great style, affording Davis one of her best late career performances. As Edith, Davis is seen as a down-and-out owner of a skid row bar who is facing financial ruin. She is reunited with her rich sister Margaret at the funeral of Margaret's husband. Distributor TWC-Radius managed a difficult feat with an inspired marketing campaign for the release of foreign arthouse horror film Goodnight Mommy, the excellent directorial debut of duo Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz. In its seventy days of release during its Us theatrical run, the film racked up over a million in ticket sales and enjoyed some excellent word of mouth attention. The Venice premiered item has also acquired notable critical acclaim and, at the time of its Blu-ray release, has made it to the shortlist of possible nominees for a Best Foreign Language Academy Award nomination. Grisly, uncomfortable, and beautifully executed, it’s an unprecedented amount of attention considering the subject matter.

Mom Without a Face: Fiala/Franz’s Fiction Debut a Mesmerizing Slice of Psychological Horror
Once you’re made aware that Goodnight Mommy is the fictional directorial debut from directing tandem Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz (partner to and writer of the works of Ulrich Seidl). A delightfully perverse purveyor of Austrian social dysfunction, you’ll know to expect something kind of twisted and bizarre. Fiala/Franz certainly delivers with an eerie portrait of identical twin horror that will eventually rank as one of the more notable titles in the slim subgenre. Effectively grotesque and downright chilling by the time it spits out its final frames, Franz unleashes her own brand of sinister familial interactions that proves to surpass even Seidl’s cynical worldview.

Identical/Identity: Villeneuve’s Doppelganger Thriller a Kafkaesque Dead Ringer
You can forget the pulpy throes of the dark hearted Prisoners, the recently released collaboration of Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve, when you sit down for their latest release, Enemy (which was actually filmed first). In the fine tradition of doppelganger cinema, this is certainly a spectacular standout. And if any evidence is needed to point to Villeneuve as a director at the top of his game, look no further. Certain to confuse, perplex, and even irritate, it’s a beautiful, nightmarishly warped universe ripe for multiple readings and psychological explanations concerning hidden desires and oppositions.
A history professor at a Toronto university, Adam Bell (Gyllenhaal), seems to be living a lackluster existence, his life a series of repetitive instances mired in work and an unenthusiastic relationship with his girlfriend (Melanie Laurent). A co-worker recommends that Adam see...
You can forget the pulpy throes of the dark hearted Prisoners, the recently released collaboration of Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve, when you sit down for their latest release, Enemy (which was actually filmed first). The upcoming Silent But Deadly is getting ready to drop some more horrific retirement palace humor on you, and we've got the details and the artwork. Dig it!
From the Press Release
Indican Pictures announces the release of its hilarious new comedy, "Silent But Deadly," starring a Golden Globe and Emmy nominated cast. The star-studded cast includes Dawn Wells ("Gilligan’s Island"), John Tartaglia (Shrek The Musical), Lee Meriwether (Catwoman), Rip Taylor (Jackass The Movie), Bruce Vilanch ("Hollywood Squares"), Kiersten Warren ("Desperate Housewives"), and Jacqui Holland (Dead Ringer) with Martin Kove (Karate Kid) and David Proval ("The Sopranos").
“The title alone made us laugh, but when we watched the film, it not only delivered over-the-top humor but was filled with great performances! This cast possessed perfect comedic timing, and there is nothing more ridiculously funny then a bunch of old people transforming into 'Rambo-like' avengers!” said Randolph Kret, VP of Indican Pictures.

Left. Right. Left! March on over to check out the spectacularly catchy tune “Toot Your Own Horn” by Winnipeg-based rap group The Lytics. The video is directed by Mike Maryniuk and is a frenzied collage of hyper-gyrating visuals that are as bouncy as the song they accompany.
Blending The Lytics with Maryniuk is a perfect match. “Toot Your Own Horn” is an upbeat tune filled with positive energy, exactly the same kind of energy that Maryniuk brings to his short films such as Cattle Call (co-directed with Matthew Rankin) and The Dead Ringer. There’s also quite the flavor of everybody’s hometown of Winnipeg infused in the mix, such as placing the band in front of the Nutty Club’s muralized slogan “Famous for Quality.”
Maryniuk also tosses in his penchant for utilizing experimental film techniques, such as the cracked film cutouts framing some of the action scenes, what...

Paul Henreid: From lighting two cigarettes and blowing smoke onto Bette Davis’ face to lighting two cigarettes while directing twin Bette Davises Paul Henreid is back as Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month of July 2013. TCM will be showing four movies featuring Henreid (Now, Voyager; Deception; The Madwoman of Chaillot; The Spanish Main) and one directed by him (Dead Ringer). (Photo: Paul Henreid lights two cigarettes on the set of Dead Ringer, while Bette Davis remembers the good old days.) (See also: “Paul Henreid Actor.”) Irving Rapper’s Now, Voyager (1942) was one of Bette Davis’ biggest hits, and it remains one of the best-remembered romantic movies of the studio era — a favorite among numerous women and some gay men. But why? Personally, I find Now, Voyager a major bore, made (barely) watchable only by a few of the supporting performances (Claude Rains, Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee...

Strangers on a Train & Dial M For Murder I received review copies of these two Blu-rays only yesterday afternoon so I've only had a chance to remove the cellophane, but I can't wait to give both a watch and will relay the results once I do. Initially, looking at the features alone, it appears the Blu-ray copy of Strangers on a Train has all the same features as my 2-Disc DVD edition from 2004. It should be noted the "Preview Version" of the film, also known as the British release, which runs two minutes longer, is only presented in standard definition at 480i and not high definition like the final release version, which does still have the included audio commentary. The Dial M for Murder disc lacks the "3D: A Brief History" that was found on the previous DVD release while keeping the "Hitchcock and Dial M" documentary. My assumption here...

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Prometheus" What's It About? Ridley Scott returns to the world of "Alien" with an epic prequel about mankind's first contact with a mysterious alien race who may or may not be our makers, and may or may not have sinister purposes. See It Because: "Prometheus" pulled off a rare feat, adding a new layer of intrigue to the rich mythology of the "Alien" series. Not since "Inception" has a summer blockbuster come along with such audacious head-scratching concepts. And despite being filled with plot holes, it was still fun to argue about the film's big questions. Also, the always brilliant Michael Fassbender was terrific as David, an android servant with T.E. Lawrence-sized dreams of exploration. Watch Noomi Rapace's Screen Test for "Prometheus" - (Also Available on Amazon Instant Video | Netflix) Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" What's It About?...
