Quotes
-
Mrs. Mary Dean : Have a good time, darling. Learn a lot and remember what I told you.
Meg Dean : Keep my hair fluffed out in back?
-
Mrs. Mary Dean : It's time she had some fun too, Robert.
Robert Dean : Fun? Is this what she needs to have fun? The adulation of a sex-starved mob?
Mrs. Mary Dean : She doesn't need it; but she seems to like it.
-
Betsy Dean : Leave here now?
Mrs. Mary Dean : Yes, go down to the desk and ask if there's any mail. Take all the time you need to do it. Demand some mail.
Betsy Dean : I wonder what cave people did with younger daughters when there was no mail desk to send them off to.
Robert Dean : Ate them.
-
Betsy Dean : You can't go around spanking everybody just because they don't want to get married. Anyway, I do need some more education. Besides, I don't want to give up water skiing yet. We have a water skiing club at home and - it's the only thing I'm really good at in the whole world, frankly.
Tech Sgt. Paul Gattling : Get over here. Water skiing...
[grabs Betsy, puts her across his knee, and repeatedly spanks her]
Betsy Dean : Oh, stop it! Stop it! Stop it!
Tech Sgt. Paul Gattling : Water skiing this!
Betsy Dean : Stop it! Stop it! Let go! Stop it! Oh! Stop it.
[Robert and Mary rush in]
Betsy Dean : He hit me!
Tech Sgt. Paul Gattling : [shaking his hand] Oh wee, she's hard!
Mrs. Mary Dean : Well, I'm glad there's something to show for all those ballet lessons. Would you like some more chocolates?
Robert Dean : It's bad enough he's trying to marry her. You don't have to reward him for attempted assault!
Mrs. Mary Dean : Is that bad, trying to marry her?
Robert Dean : Betsy is a child.
Tech Sgt. Paul Gattling : She don't neck like no child.

[last lines]
Robert Dean : Well, it's fortunate I'm not an emotional man.
Mrs. Mary Dean : I know. Ice water in your veins. Mine too.
-
Mrs. Mary Dean : We're all grown ups. We cannot live each other's lives. It's one of the said things about life. We keep finding them out.
-
Mrs. Mary Dean : When he first saw you, Betsy, he was in good health. Look at him now. Congratulations.
Betsy Dean : We've really got kind of a hydrogen bomb on the poor squares haven't we?
Mrs. Mary Dean : Oh, yes, yes. Sure. We're real killers, we are.
