Launch Releasing, the independent film distribution and production company, has announced its 2023 development slate following last year’s releases, Lionsgate’s “The Black String,” starring Frankie Muniz, and “The Translator,” which world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Highlights include the action-comedy “Andy Somebody” and two sequels to the animated franchise “Riki Rhino,” which the company will executive produce.
“At Launch Releasing, our passion and mandate is really simple – we want to find movies that we love and share them with audiences. When we saw ‘Andy Somebody,’ we instantly fell in love with its underdog story and its quirky comedic characters and we’re looking forward to audiences joining us on this really fun ride,” stated Sheldon Brigman, the company’s CEO. “Whether it’s genre titles such as ‘Mr. Sleep’ or captivating human interest films such as ‘The Translator’ where complex characters make life and death decisions in war torn Syria,...

It’s no mystery why Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” is nominated for 17 Emmy Awards including comedy series, actor and guest actor and actress: a delish plot, snappy dialogue, pitch-perfect directing, and a cast to die for led by Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. They are “The Three Amigos” for the 21st century. To celebrate the series, which recently had its second season finale, why not look at some fun facts and trivia of the cast many of whom already have mantle full of honors.
Steve Martin
Talk about a modern-day Renaissance man. Martin is an actor, writer, musician-he plays a mean banjo-composer and ace tap dancers. Is there anything he can’t do? Martin won an honorary Oscar in 2014, the AFI’s Life Achievement Award in 2015, four Grammy Awards including two for best comedy recording in 1978 and 1979, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2007 such critics honors...

For the seventh time in his long career, Nathan Lane will be trying to win his first ever Primetime Emmy Award. Lane is nominated in the Best Comedy Guest Actor category for his stint as Teddy Dimas on the first season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
Lane’s submission is “The Boy from 6B,” in which Lane, like most of the other characters in the episode, has no audible dialogue and primarily sees Lane communicating using American Sign Language. The episode opens in a flashback of Teddy telling his 10-year-old deaf son, Theo, that he wishes he could hear the soundtrack to the musical, “Carousel.” He tries to see if Theo can hear it through headphones with the volume turned up and presses the headphones against his head until he pulls back and apologizes.

One of the leading Emmy contenders this year is Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” which could be one of the most nominated comedy series in the field. In addition, the comedy series, which will drop its second season in the middle of Emmy nom voting, could make history for two of its guest actor comedy submissions — Nathan Lane and James Caverly.
Lane could become the most nominated actor in the history of the guest actor comedy category (beginning in 1975), while Caverly will be the first deaf actor ever recognized.
A likely frontrunner for writing and directing, particularly for “The Boy From 6B,” the critically acclaimed seventh episode of the inaugural season, will be a focused highlight that Hulu will put forth with the TV Academy.

Religion may be the opiate of the masses but nostalgia runs it a close second. And there’s no narcotic more soothing or transportive than the depression era adventures of Our Gang, a band of pint-sized comedians set loose in the wilds of Culver City. The new release from ClassicFlix, The Little Rascals, Vol. 2, raises the curtain on the gang’s golden age; still topping the bill were Jackie Cooper, Allen Hoskins as Farina, Norman Chaney as Chubby, and Bobby Hutchins as the knee-high Wheezer. Stiller is known for his TV roles as Frank Costanza on Seinfeld and Arthur Spooner on The King of Queens, and multiple films including, The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three, John Waters’ Hairspray, his son’s Zoolander, and Richard Lester’s adaptation of Terrence McNally’s play, The Ritz, which Jerry also acted in on Broadway.

“It’s one of the best experiences of my career,” declares Nathan Lane. He’s speaking about playing Lewis Michener, a grizzled detective on Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.” The story gives events from 1938 Los Angeles a supernatural bent and allows Lane to bring his character to surprisingly dark places. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“This is about what’s happening now, seen through this historical perspective,” explains Lane. Series creator and writer John Logan was adamant that the show not merely be a pretty period piece. The show is not afraid to dive headfirst into the racism and tension of the time period. The questions permeating every story beat are “how does history repeat itself? Are the monsters within us?”

Allison Williams changed up her look in a big way during a recent magazine shoot.
While we're used to seeing the 28-year-old actress as a beautiful brunette, she covers Allure's March cover rocking bold, platinum blonde hair.

Williams talks about her new 'do with the magazine, and calls it "fun."
"I like it," she says. "Especially this blonde -- it feels like it is just a new twist on the same old me. It's just hair! But it's fun. Maybe I'll become this gorgeous bombshell vixen. Or maybe I'll still just be the adult-spelling-bee spirit I've always been. I bet people won't recognize me, and that's gonna be a fun reveal with my friends."

Women presidents at the Academy: Cheryl Boone Isaacs is only the third one (photo: Angelina Jolie, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Brad Pitt) (See previous post: "Honorary Award Non-Winners: Too Late for Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich.") Wrapping up this four-part "Honorary Oscars Bypass Women" article, let it be noted that in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 85-year history there have been only two women presidents: two-time Oscar-winning actress Bette Davis (for two months in 1941, before the Dangerous and Jezebel star was forced to resign) and screenwriter Fay Kanin (1979-1983), whose best-known screen credit is the 1958 Doris Day-Clark Gable comedy Teacher's Pet. Additionally, following some top-level restructuring in April 2011, the Academy created the positions of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, with the CEO post currently held by a woman, former Film Independent executive director and sometime actress Dawn Hudson. The COO post is held...

Perhaps the only real problem with Earshot is that it misses a blindingly obvious trick. On today of all days, Buffy – having been infected by some demon mind-reading gunk – can't mentally earwig on the thoughts of The Mayor and Faith. She could don one of her brilliant disguises (as seen in I Robot...You Jane) and then show up to The Mayor's pristine office while camouflaged as a postie or a pizza delivery girl or a double glazing sales rep. It's odd that Buffy doesn't attempt this, given that it could be the ideal opportunity to throw some more light on this Ascension business.
The mind-reading staple's another cliché of stock fantasy and sci-fi, but what Earshot does is to carefully look at the up and down sides of this condition. It's an extra sense that I bet people would think about having. It's the sort of thing that would...

The Following won't win any awards for it, but it is consistent in its insanity, violence, and queasy entertainment factor...
This review contains spoilers.
2.11 Freedom
One of the things The Following has always done very well is violence as spectacle. When the show decides that it's time for a crazy, bloody set piece, the end result is usually pretty hard to look away from, even if they make it hard to watch. The Following won't win any awards, except perhaps a Scream Award for Stabbiest Show, but it's consistently, insanely entertaining, and it never hesitates to go completely mental and mow down dozens of people with the aim of providing queasy entertainment.
True to form, The Following's villains are always looking for a big, flashy, bloody way to get attention for themselves, and this week's episode is no different. Given that Joe's kill...

Review Ron Hogan 26 Mar 2014 - 07:15
Has The Following really crossed a line in this week's episode?
This review contains spoilers.
2.10 Teacher's Pet
The Following may have well crossed a line to turn off its viewership this week. For 26 episodes, the show has done everything imaginable to alienate viewers. Lots of people getting killed in gruesome ways, serial killers offered up as characters we're supposed to root for, children in peril, “classic Poe,” Ryan Hardy's slow transformation from troubled cop to outright sociopath, Mike's father being murdered just to provoke a brief emotional reaction, and some foaming-at-the-mouth poisoning courtesy of Joe's former cult leader and spiritual guru. Entire families have been murdered in cold blood. Corpses have been used as dance partners and implied sex dolls. Any number of horrible, depraved thing shave occurred, yet there's one line the show hasn't crossed: they haven't killed any animals.
That changed this week.

After the big reveal at the end of last week's "The Following" -- you know, that tiny little detail that Claire's been alive this whole time -- many viewers expected "Teacher's Pet" on Monday (March 24) to focus on what Claire's been up to and what she decides to do now that she knows Joe is also still alive. Unfortunately, it looks like that will have to wait until next week, because this episode was all about Joe's new religious killer cut.

A giant snake that likes miniature golf. A god who's too busy fussing over which designer shoes to wear. Chocolate bars that turn adults into over-excited teenagers. The list could go on for days, but I think you get my drift when I say that one of Buffy The Vampire Slayer's greatest achievements is to turn the most absurd of ideas into something approaching credible.
Somehow the fact that the above examples sound ridiculous is incidental, given that the writers combine smart dialogue and good plotting to overcome any doubts. One of the earliest examples of mixing the absurd and the dramatic is the Season One middle point, The Pack.
The Pack's plot basically concerns a small gang of high school bullies possessed by killer hyenas. Yes, really. In theory, it's the sort of idea that you could only find in a comedy skit. In practice though, The Pack...

Ever tried juggling? It's an accomplishment that very few can pull off, and to those like my clumsy self who have trouble throwing and catching one lone object, never mind three - as a career prospect, it's as likely as taking a stroll 20 feet up in the air.
Buffy wouldn't be too good at juggling - especially given that she's having trouble multi-tasking in her own life. Being a Slayer doesn't allow for an easy social life, as she finds out to her annoyance in Never Kill A Boy On The First Date. All she's after is a simple, hassle-free date with Mr Sensitive Of Sunnydale, Owen Thurman, but her true calling in life is making this aim difficult.
In fact, if Buffy's life were a list of school exam results, then she'd be mortified. While she's scoring a Grade A in making those around her green with jealousy,...

Years ago, before the days of scrolling through 1093 movie channels on a small telly box, folks could enjoy the experience of going to the cinema. A particular favourite of sci-fi fans in the good old days was what was known as the B Movie. Normally, a sci-fi B Movie would consist of a hokey plot, squeaky over-acting and a cardboard monster. Despite this less than formidable reputation, the B Movie still brought the punters back for more. Less choice means that you take what you can get, and in the days before DVDs and Digiboxes were on tap, the B Movie was about the best that you could have.
I guess that's what the Buffy production team were aiming to pay homage to when it came to creating Teacher's Pet, the latest wacky escapade of Season One. Vampires? Bah! Witches? Pah! When you're on a Hellmouth, even a Preying Mantis...

Blacklisted screenwriter and president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
The screenwriter Fay Kanin, who has died aged 95, was the only female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in its 86-year history (apart from Bette Davis, who resigned after two months in 1941). She served as president from 1979 to 1983, for the maximum of four consecutive one-year terms. Kanin, who committed herself to the preservation of early Hollywood movies, was first elected president by a board consisting of 34 men and one woman.
"I'm a big feminist," she declared at the time that her play Goodbye, My Fancy opened on Broadway in 1948. "I've put into my play my feeling that women should never back away from life." The serious comedy, with Madeleine Carroll as a powerful congresswoman revisiting her alma mater to receive an honorary degree, ran for more than a year and was made into a 1951 film starring Joan Crawford.

While two-time Oscar champ Bette Davis could lay claim to being the first female president of the motion picture academy, her tenure was short-lived, lasting just two months in 1941. -Insertgroups:12- Fay Kanin, who died Thursday at age 95, was the second woman to head up the organization, serving with distinction from 1979 to 1983. She understood what it meant to contend for an Oscar, having been nominated alongside her husband Michael Kanin for their original script to the Doris Day-Clark Gable comedy "Teacher's Pet" in 1958; they lost to the "The Defiant Ones." Michael had won this award in 1942 for co-writing with Ring Lardner, Jr. "Woman of the Year," which was the first pairing of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Kanin, who had penned the play "Goodbye, My Fancy" which won Shirley Booth the first of her three Tonys in 1949, tried her hand at solo writing teleplays in the 1970s. After...

Fans of classic movies know that "Woman of the Year" marks the beginning of the 25-year partnership, on- and off-screen, between one of film's most beloved and enduring couples: Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Released 70 years ago today (on January 19, 1942), "Woman of the Year" came to define combustible romantic chemistry, thanks to the two fiery, evenly-matched leads. It launched a partnership that lasted until Tracy's death in 1967, a quarter-century union that resulted in nine films and an extramarital affair that was Hollywood's worst kept secret. What fans may not know is how the partnership came to be, who the real-life inspirations were for Hepburn's high-minded columnist and Tracy's earthy sportswriter, or the forgotten screen pairing of the two stars that came four years earlier. Read on for the untold story of "Woman of the Year" and its long afterlife in the realms of Broadway, TV, and magazines. 1. "Woman of the Year...

Doris Day may have been — once again — absurdly bypassed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors, but at least she'll be getting some much deserved recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca). Day, 87, has been named the recipient of the L.A. Critics' Career Achievement Award of 2011 — or 2012, as the ceremony will take place early next year. (This year's winners will be announced on December 11.) The first Lafca award winners were announced in 1975. The annual Career Achievement Award was instituted the following year. Since then, a mere four women have been recognized for their contributions to the motion picture industry: actresses Barbara Stanwyck (1981) and Myrna Loy (1983), editor Dede Allen (1999), and now Doris Day. Male recipients — sometimes two per year — range from auteur John Cassavetes to comedian/auteur Jerry Lewis, from producer John Calley to silent-era pioneer Allan Dwan, from animator Chuck Jones to filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

Battle: Los Angeles invaded the top spot with the second-biggest start of the year behind Rango, while Red Riding Hood lacked bite and Mars Needs Moms was a massive flop. All three movies generally played out according to what their respective genres prescribed. Overall business was down 12 percent from the same weekend last year, when Alice in Wonderland's reign continued. Battle: Los Angeles raked in an estimated $36 million on approximately 4,700 screens at 3,417 locations, boasting initial attendance that was a bit less than Black Hawk Down and Starship Troopers but slightly ahead of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008). Its gross, though, was much greater than the entire run of the last Los Angeles-set, alien invasion movie Skyline, but that picture's abject failure was an aberration of the sub-genre, not the norm. Battle's start also trailed District 9's $37.4 million and Cloverfield's $40.1 million, and it, of course, didn't hold a...

"Life Unexpected" is welcoming "Melrose Place's" Shaun Sipos to the cast this season, and his character, Eric Daniels, is... well, not what we expected.
Zap2it visited the show's Vancouver set and had a chat with executive producer Liz Tigelaar to get the scoop on Portland's newest hunk.
Eric blows into town in the Sept. 14 premiere and surprises Lux (Britt Robertson) with his almost dangerously optimistic, hopeful outlook on life. "It's already leaked online that Eric is a teacher at Lux's school," Tigelaar tells us. "She's struggling in her classes -- Lux is definitely not your straight-a student. He's going to become a very influential person in her life who helps uncover and reveal things about what's going on with her."
Tigelaar describes Lux as an "old soul." She has trouble connecting with kids her age because of the struggles she's been through in the foster system, so she...

Thriller Night: The Dancing with the Stars pro dancers performed to a medley of Michael Jackson hits as a tribute to the influential performer on Tuesday's live results show. Jackson's family, including matriarch Katherine, as well as a tearful Latoya and Jermaine, watched the tribute from their front row seats. The performers were equally moved. "We gave it a ballroom twist, obviously, but why try to reinvent the wheel? It's been done, it's amazing and we'll just keep it that way," says Maksim Chmerkovskiy about the performance, which included the popular dance sequence from the King of Pop's "Thriller" video. According to Derek Hough, the dancers didn't have a lot of time to rehearse. "There's a lot of pressure to do something like that. They don't give us a lot of time," he says. "They throw us in a room and go, 'Do this in like two hours.'" Back...
