The Furious 8 crowd is advised to run for the hills. Terence Davies is a poet of cinema, of images, sounds and rhythms that define a life. Davies films move at a pace demanded by the material, not fidgety audiences. His remarkable debut features – 1988's Distant Voices, Still Lives and 1992's The Long Day Closes – are drawn from his own growing up experiences as the youngest of 10 children in a working-class Catholic family in Liverpool. To deal with an abusive father, he escaped into music and movies.

Michaela Coel isn't afraid of being uncomfortable. And she certainly isn't afraid to make you feel uncomfortable. "I'm way too honest," she admits, calling in from the U.K. "It can backfire. I think you could do another kind of comedy like this that's not awkward." There's a momentary silence. "But I don't know how to do that."
As the creator, writer and star of the British sitcom Chewing Gum, Coel has channeled her particular strain of cringe-comedy into one young woman's carnal-knowledge coming-of-age nightmare. The show's revolves around Tracey Gordon,...

The subtitle for this compulsively watchable film is The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer. It’s a mouthful. But Norman, written and directed by American-born Israeli Joseph Cedar (Footnote) in his first English-language film, is a spellbinder that features Richard Gere in one of his best performances ever.
The American Gigolo star alters his movie-star looks to play Norman Oppenheimer, a schlubby loser who’s termed a "generous Jew" by the people he helps. Roaming the streets of New York in the same cap and...

There are few words that can kill a film quicker than cute – just say to yourself, "Gosh, what a cute movie that was," and you can practically feel the inside of your mouth lined with a thin, granular film of Nutra-Sweet. It's one thing, of course, to plunk down cash to watch grumpy old coots and/or kids say the darnedest things, or bask in the cinematic equivalent of a puppy licking a baby's head. We, too, have done this. We don't judge you. Those things are a shucks-and-awww attack,...

If you want to hang with a trio of old-coot charmers, you could do worse than Going in Style, a comic softball that, for the price of a movie ticket, puts you in the pleasurable company of Morgan Freeman, 79, Alan Arkin, 83, and Michael Caine, 84. The movie is no bargain, but the actors keep delivering dividends.
Constructed from the blueprint set in 1979 by director Martin Brest and now-deceased stars George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg, this remake is the same tired piffle about three Brooklyn-based seniors who decide to rob a bank.

Grr, argh. Sit, Ubu, sit. I made this! What’s the story behind the production company tags added onto our favourite TV shows?
Closing logos have evolved into a TV production company’s tiny stamp of individuality. They’re a single snippet of screen time not at the mercy of network notes, audience feedback or sponsorship concerns.
A closing tag doesn’t need to sell a show, tell a story, or lasso an audience back for the next episode. It’s simply a signature, a few seconds entirely belonging to the creatives, to do with what they will.
As such, closing logos are as self-indulgent or esoteric as the production company wills them. They’re perhaps the only place in television production where in-jokes, family photos, personal homages (or extended rants in the case of one comedy producer) and kid-drawn scribbles usually found taped to the fridge door are entirely welcome.

With the recent release of his movie Alpha Papa, (summed up well by Alan himself as “a powerful piece of work with a capital Pow”), Alan Partridge has hit career highs not reached since TV Quick magazine voted him Man of the Moment in 1994. It seems Alan is making the most of the limelight, and in a career that has seen considerably more downs than ups, who can blame him?
His life so far has been a riches to rags and back to (admittedly more modest) riches tale. Although he has never quite returned to the heady days of his own TV chat show, he has still come through some pretty tough periods – unfairly being denied a second series of his show after shooting a guest live on air in the final episode, having to return to the graveyard slot at Radio Norwich and living in a Travel Tavern for 182 days.

Despite being German-born, filmmaker Roland Emmerich has made arguably the most patriotic American action movie of all time with Independence Day. Since then, however, he's stumbled with clunky epics like Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow. But with rumors of Independence Day 2 brewing, and his return to Washington D.C.-set thriller, White House Down, Emmerich seems primed for a revitalization! And those who like our action big and repentantly rah-rah couldn't be happier. So, consider it gravy that Emmerich is collecting a truly incredible band of actors to fill out his cast. Man of the moment and Magic Mike star Channing Tatum will headline the production playing a secret service agent who is obliged to save the president's life when a mysterious paramilitary force invades the White House, taking it under siege, and planning to assassinate the Commander-in-chief. Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx will play the president, while Oscar-nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal...

Yes, the Toronto International Film Festival does mark the unofficial start to Academy Award season, but it's not all period pieces and prestige dramas.
Peruse the fest's diverse slate and you'll also catch glimpses of Gerard Butler firing machine guns and Brad Pitt firing off pep talks to a baseball squad.
Compiled with our more "mainstream" film admirers in mind, here are the best of the best we saw north of the border this year.
Warning: Lots of George Clooney, Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan ahead. – By Kevin Polowy and Nigel Smith

Just as I was saying they don't make enough good car movies, news of a second one comes flying in after word broke about Michael Mann's Ford movie. Man of the Moment Jeremy Renner is busying himself on both The Avengers and Mission: Impossible, but that doesn't mean he has no time to prepare another starring role for himself in the form of true-story Slingshot. Showblitz are reporting that Renner is set to produce and star in the film, which is about banker Bill Caswell who competed in the Mexico Rally Championships in a BMW he bought for 500 dollars. How he'll fit it into his schedule is a mystery, considering that he's committed to Marvel movies for the next four hundred years (more or less) and is in line for the new Bourne movie too. Also, word is that if Mission Impossible 4 is a hit, he'll be taking over from Tom Cruise!

Man of the moment, James Franco is adding yet another string to his bow, starring in a saucy new indie drama, entitled Cherry.
According to Variety, novelist Stephen Elliott’s directorial debut will also star Heather Graham and Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel.
Franco already has ties to scriptwriter, Elliott as he optioned his memoir, The Adderall Diaries with a view to producing it through his company Rabbit Bandini.
The story follows an 18-year-old girl who moves to San Francisco and enters the adult film industry. Franco will play a drug-addled lawyer with whom she becomes involved.
Graham revisits a familiar role as a pornographic actress who tries her hand at directing, only to become obsessed with the young girl. Patel will play the girl’s best friend and potential love interest, while Lili Taylor is in negotiations to play her alcoholic mother.

It was only days ago that we at Bollyspice reported the Dhak Dhak Queen, Madhuri Dixit , was back in town and making her debut into small screen as the judge for Jhalak Dikhla Ja and while all are still reeling from the news of her return, this dancing diva is all praises for Man of the moment, Hrithik Roshan.
It's been a week since Madhuri landed in Mumbai town and the first film the beautiful actress set her eyes on was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish. So moved by Hrithik's role as Ethan Mascaranes, the Aaja Nachle actress promptly called the actor and heaped laurels on him for his acting. "I told him that he was unbelievably good and he said he could now retire! Even Aishwarya and all the actors have done a good job. Sanjay has made a beautiful film," the actress admitted to Mid Day. Well this is a week of varied goodness to bring home! After last week’s choice of cheeses, we needed some movies to up the value of DVD a bit, and what better way than to start this week’s list off with is the ever appreciated:
The Human Centipede – Directed by Tom Six, this horrific tale sees a mad scientist type experiment on two lost girls who come wondering to his house out in the woods. The idea is disturbing enough being banned from several theatres, but this is a must of any horror fan who likes a bit of the nitty gritty… And for anyone wanting a bit of surreal porn.
Okay, so I know that wasn’t exactly class at it’s best, but this one definitely is:
Se7en – Being released on Blu-ray for the first time, we get to watch the beauty of this murder mystery unfold in high definition.

Man of the moment Bradley Cooper, or ‘Face’ as he may now be known, has signed onto an as yet untitled Disney comedy-drama about a man who gets injured playing baseball and from what we gather, the movies sees him getting fit again.
THR have broken the news that the movie will have similar themes to Scent of a Woman and The Rookie which starred Dennis Quaid.
The dramedy centers on a baseball player who gets injured and has to go back to the minors where the only place he can find lodging is in a senior citizens’ home. There, he meets an old baseball guru who helps lead him back.
I guess ‘Dramady’ is a new word that I hope dies a death pretty soon!
The movie doesn’t have a release date as yet but no doubt we’ll be bringing you that information in due course. Cooper’s new movie.

Man of the moment, Michael Cera has another new movie being released (no UK date as yet) called 'Youth in Revolt'.
The brief synopsis goes like this: The journal of Nick Twisp, an 18-year old high school student, who goes on a quest to lose his virginity after his parent's breakup.
The supporting cast looks excellent and includes Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Long, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Ari Graynor and Jean Smart. Check out the new trailer after the jump. It looks like typical Michael Cera but at the moment, he can do no wrong!
