To avoid confusing it with its TV series of the same name--Colt .45 (1957)--Warner Bros. changed the film's title to "Chief Thundercloud." It has subsequently reverted back to its original title.

The hideout used by the outlaw gang is the same location as in a previous Ruth Roman movie, Barricade (1950).
The .44-cal. Colt revolving belt pistols was made in 1849 and reached final form by 1850.
Follows the same basic plot of Winchester '73 (1950) starring James Stewart, released 11 months earlier. In that film, a rare rifle is stolen from Stewart and he sets out to get it back.
