- Roseanna McCoy: I can't ever marry you.
- Thad Wilkins: But why not? Why can't you?
- Roseanna McCoy: Because I'm bad.
- Thad Wilkins: You bad? Why, Roseanna, I think you're lear out of your mind.
- Roseanna McCoy: Maybe it's that... or bewitched.
- Thad Wilkins: But I thought you said you... you said you like me to put my arms around you.
- Roseanna McCoy: [Hugging him] To hold me and hide me. Oh, if it could only be. But I'd bring destruction to you, Thad. You'd catch it from me like a fever.
- Thad Wilkins: Catch what?
- Roseanna McCoy: The misery, the wickedness. Let's get on back to the house and when we get there you go off, Thad, and never think of me no more. Never no more.
- Roseanna McCoy: [Kissing him for the first time] Oh, Johnsie... Johnsie.
- Johnse Hatfield: I thought you'd never come out.
- Roseanna McCoy: I was so afraid.
- Johnse Hatfield: Of me?
- Roseanna McCoy: I thought I was so bad. I thought maybe you put some charm on me. I tried to think you weren't here a callin'.
- Johnse Hatfield: But you ain't afraid no more?
- Roseanna McCoy: Oh, no... no.
- Johnse Hatfield: Oh, my darling. My dear.
- [They embrace]
- Roseanna McCoy: [Directed to Hatfield kin] You heard the bad things he said of me. And now he wants to start trouble and kill my folks. All because Johnsie and me love each other.
- [to Devil]
- Roseanna McCoy: But that don't matter to you 'cause you don't know what it is to love anybody. You don't want him to be happy. You don't want him to be kind and good to folks. You want to make him like you are. You want hate and wickedness to go on and on 'til he's as bad and hard and cruel and miserable as you. Standin' in the way like a mean old dog when we was wishin' everyone to be happy like we were. But you won't spoil us. You won't. You won't!
- Roseanna McCoy: You heard about your brother gettin' hurt?
- Johnse Hatfield: Yes, I saw them at the fort.
- Roseanna McCoy: Is he gonna get better?
- Johnse Hatfield: No.
- Roseanna McCoy: It's my fault. I brought the bad luck. I'll bring it on everyone.
- Johnse Hatfield: I don't hold to that talk.
- Roseanna McCoy: Don't touch me. I thought it was enough to love you but it ain't. There's things stronger than love. There's hate and wickedness all around. They won't let anything good happen. I want to go home. I want to go home.
- Johnse Hatfield: Nothing's strong than us. There's ho hate in us... only love.
- Roseanna McCoy: It's not enough.
- Johnse Hatfield: If the whole world was on fire I wouldn't care. I've been feelin' all day like I was cut in half 'cause I wasn't with ya. You're the same as me. I don't care how you talk. You'r the same as me.
- [He kisses her]
- Johnse Hatfield: Tell me, Roseanna. Tell me you're the same.
- Johnse Hatfield: You go on home and I'll come and face up to your pa. Tell him I love you and the preacher's comin' to Thad's store and we're gonna be married.
- Roseanna McCoy: What if he says "no?"
- Johnse Hatfield: There ain't a big enough "no."
- Old Randall McCoy: [Looking out the window after his daughter reappears and tells him she is in love with a Hatfield] Lord, I prayed to you all last night that the lightnin' mightn't a blackened her, nor a bear nor a panther married her. And you granted my prayer. I served you all the days of my life, the best I know'd how. My fault, Lord. I failed you.
- Mounts Hatfield: [to Johnsie during gunfire] You're a Hatfield now... if you want to get out of her alive.
- Roseanna McCoy: Pa, say you'll do him no harm when he comes here. If you love me just a bit, pa.
- Old Randall McCoy: I'm no murderin' savage. I'll not harm him.
- Roseanna McCoy: [to the Hatfield men while standing over her wounded little brother] Shootin' a boy. You're not men, none of ya. You got the face of a wolf pack fixed for killin' and nothin' else.
- [to Johnse]
- Roseanna McCoy: And you look the same. Why don't you shoot me? I'm bigger than Randall and I hate you more than he does. I hate the day my eyes first saw ya. I hate every word I've spoken to ya. I hate ya for everything you've done to me.
- Johnse Hatfield: I'll help you with him.
- Roseanna McCoy: Take your bloody Hatfield hands off him!
- Johnse Hatfield: [after a pause] Alright, hate then. That's all I want out of ya. Hate and nothin' else.
- Devil Anse Hatfield: We ain't had no fightin' for a while. An' I miss it. Keep her around. She'll draw trouble like honey draws flies.
- Mounts Hatfield: So you left Randall McCoy's daughter all alone in your house. She'll burn it down for you. I know the breed. I weren't much bigger 'n your littlest when Randall McCoy shot my Pappy down.
- Roseanna McCoy: Mrs Hatfield. I'm sorry I spoke up so loud and unmannerly just now.
- Levisa Hatfield: He'll think no worse of you fer showin' a bit of spirit.
- Levisa Hatfield: We don't have grand vittles like some folks but there's bread and meat on the table there.
