Sex & Nudity

  • There is no nudity in this film and no sexual activity. Even in the dance scene participants are reminded that they are not permitted to dance "cheek to cheek."

Violence & Gore

  • There are several scenes where mentally unstable women are grabbed firmly by the arms and held tightly. One is wrestled to the ground and restrained.
  • A mentally ill patient grabs another around the throat.
  • The depiction of shock treatment is very violent and (pardon the pun) shocking.
  • An inmate bites a doctor on the finger (not seen).

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Two doctors smoke pipes. One of the other doctors smokes a cigar. Most of the adult characters smoke cigarettes regularly.
  • There is very occasional incidental and responsible alcohol use.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This is a particularly intense film - the depictions of life in a mental institution, and some procedures shown, are graphic and confronting.
