Originally "Molodaya Gvardiya" was produced by Sergei Gerasimov on stage at the Moscow Film-actor's Theater in1944-1945. In 1945 Gerasimov took his cast to the city of Krasnodon, where the historic resistance took place during WWII. During the film production actors were living with the families of the teens, that were arrested and killed by the Nazis.
Due to its epic length, the film was released in two parts.
