Studiocanal launched a brand new official podcast – and the host might just be familiar to Film Stories listeners.
This is a bit of an odd story for me to write. Basically, well, because I’m in it. I’ll see how I get on.
The rather fine folks at Studiocanal have launched an official podcast, digging into the huge archive of movies under its stewardship. It’s arriving regularly, and as well as focusing on a movie of the month, there’s a broader exploration of other bits and bobs too.
Don’t take our word for it. Here’s Jamie McHale, the head of theatrical marketing at the studio: “We’re thrilled to be launching an official podcast to celebrate our incredible library of titles and upcoming theatrical releases. The in-depth analysis and regular features such as “Dream Double Bills” and “Hidden Gems” from Simon and his guests are...

True Detective: Night Country’s VFX supervisor Barney Curnow had not anticipated his workload to be quite so big. “The nature of the show being so outdoors, and weather-dependent meant there ended up being a lot of stuff that we couldn’t directly plan for,” he explains of the Alaska-set Iceland-shot series starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
The result was over 1000 shots using VFX, originally expected to be 700-800, from the memorable opening sequence to some of Night Country’s more gruesome scenes as well as the town’s Alaskan features. Nine different VFX vendors were brought in to work on specific scenes,...

Few films have arrived in theaters saddled with more baggage than "Twilight Zone: The Movie." That the anthology film featuring segments from John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller actually arrived in the first place was something of a surprise -- and for many in the entertainment industry, it wasn't a welcome one.
The production became a wholly avoidable tragedy on June 23, 1982, when a helicopter crashed on the set of Landis' segment, "Time Out," killing Vic Morrow and child actors Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen. The show does not always have to go on, but the movie was nevertheless completed and released (rather insensitively) on June 24, 1983, leading off with "Time Out". For some, it was like watching a snuff film.
How do you not let the realization that you're watching what might be a criminal production -- the National Transportation Safety Board had yet to finish their investigation,...

On the 8th day of Creepmas, we’re celebrating the Victorian holiday tradition of sharing ghost stories. Telling ghost stories during winter was a folk custom that dated back centuries but slowly faded over time. Any tradition that involves scaring each other with horror stories feels like one worth reviving, so today’s Creepmas festivities embrace holiday horror movies that center around ghosts and hauntings. The eight titles below run the gamut from inducing warm holiday feels to ghostly insanity to chilling terror.
The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 8 Christmas ghosts to haunt your holiday season.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.
Anything for Jackson

I’ve been on a bit of a TV kick lately. You’ll see it coming up in one of the adaptation videos but also in what I’ve been watching. The 2023 season of Creepshow has been a lot of fun and Mike Flanagan’s “Succession mixed with a Giallo” in Fall of the House of Usher has been one of my favorite pieces of media this year. It reminded me a lot of growing up watching the second coming of TV horror movies in the 90s. I hesitate to call it the golden age because I think the 70s still holds that title but the 90s had all manner from Stephen King adaptations,...

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies, with some selections reflecting a specific day or event in September, and others chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature killer baboons, deadly office drama, and more.
A Photograph (1977)
Image: Play for Today, Episode “A Photograph”
Directed by John Glenister.
BBC1’s historic anthology series Play for Today aired for fourteen years, and in that time, it produced a small number of tales that sit somewhere in the vicinity of horror. Episodes also run close to feature length, thus making them more like TV-movies. While there was low chance of finding anything straightforwardly horror in this series, which mainly focused on dramas, there is no denying the sinister quality of certain stories.

Gore. The gore the merrier or so it seemed during the 70s and 80s. And throughout many a decade gorehounds love all the red splatter a screen can handle. And one of the best to give the gore all the more is Tom Savini. A master of splatter, an icon of special effects, and a director and actor too, Savini has been the inspiration for more filmmakers and effects artists than I can count and continues to do so. He’s also never stopped making monsters and mayhem either. Tom Savini is one of modern horrors legends and I think it’s...

From the creepy ventriloquist’s doll in Dead of Night, to M3gan and The Boy, via The Conjuring and Child’s Play, dolls have made a consistently chilling contribution to the horror genre
The Child’s Play franchise, as with all the best slasher series, is all about the villain. The “Good Guy” doll is occupied by the soul of a serial killer, and thanks to his being voiced by the great Brad Dourif (one of the few actors to take on a slasher movie role after they became famous), has more personality than the likes of Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers laid end to end.
Now Chucky can add a documentary to his ever expanding filmography. “I do remember Chucky being at my birthday parties,” says Kyra Elise Gardner, whose father, Tony Gardner, has been the franchise’s head puppeteer for the past two decades. Her film, Living with Chucky,...

101 Films presents the Bob Clark: Horror Collection, featuring the director’s highly influential horrors of the early 1970s, brought together for the first time. Though he would achieve wider success in the 1980s with hit comedies such as Porky’s (1981) and A Christmas Story (1983), Clark’s run of three horror movies a decade earlier — low budget horror-comedy Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things (1972), chilling Vietnam War critique Deathdream (Aka Dead of Night) (1974) and genre-defining slasher masterpiece Black Christmas (1974) — ensure his legacy as a master of the horror genre.
Title 029 on the 101 Films Black Label, this limited-edition set also features new Bob Clark documentary ‘Dreaming of Death’, stunning newly commissioned artwork for all three titles with reversible sleeves, a booklet with new writing on Clark’s career, a set of art cards, and extensive additional content.

Would “The Sopranos” finale have been as impactful if it hadn’t included Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”? And what would “Grey’s Anatomy” be without its frequent use of the Snow Patrol song “Chasing Cars”? These and many more unforgettable musical TV moments all occurred before the establishment of the Best Music Supervision Emmy category. Since 2017, the award has served the purpose of honoring the people who enhance TV shows by incorporating existing songs into episodes and thus stirring up viewers’ emotions.

Apple TV+’s newest drama Pachinko, based on the award-winning book by Min Jin Lee, offers poignant takeaways about family, survival and love. But, viewers should also expect to walk away with The Grass Roots’ “Let’s Live For Today” stuck in their heads.
The psychedelic anthem scores the series’ title sequence, which weaves together a visual tapestry with the past and present of Korea’s sprawling history. (You can watch it below.) As The Grass Roots sing of living and loving for today, age-worn images of Korean women and men in traditional wear lead to baby photos from the late 20th century, which transition into footage of a bustling Shibuya Crossing in Japan. A convergence of old and new, the high-energy opener is just one of the ways Apple TV+’s Pachinko highlights the link between the present and the generations that came before.

Sally Ann Howes, who began her acting career as a child and was best known for starring in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” opposite Dick Van Dyke, died on Dec. 19. She was 91.
Her death was confirmed by her nephew, Toby Howes, who tweeted: “I can also confirm the passing of my beloved Aunty Sally Ann Howes who died peacefully in her sleep yesterday. My brother & I thought Sally Ann might hold on until the Christmas screening of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ as this would have greatly appealed to her mischievous side.”
“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” is often broadcast on Christmas Day in the U.K.
In a career that spanned five decades, Howes racked up 40 film and television credits, having spent the latter half of her career focusing on the theater, including a part in Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music” at the New York City Opera in 1990.

In film history, the anthology genre is the most challenging. Episodic films often have several directors and screenwriters which gives them an inconsistent tone and quality. But the genre’s pitfalls haven’t stopped such filmmakers including Akira Kurosawa (“Dreams”), the Coens (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”), Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez (“Sin City”); Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese (“New York Stories”); and Joe Dante, John Landis, George Miller and Steven Spielberg (“Twilight Zone: The Movie”).
Wes Anderson joined them with his latest film “The French Dispatch,” which received a nine-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. The comedy brings to life three stories from an American magazine published in a fictional French city and features his stock company of actors including Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody and Owen Wilson.

Any WW2 action adventure involving the Norwegian resistance is Ok in my book, and this big-star saga about sabotage efforts to stop the Nazis’ atom research is a natural — much of what happens in the story is true. The show can boast marvelous locations and excellent action scenes but the script and characters aren’t very strong. Did Columbia curb epic director Anthony Mann’s greater ambitions, or did star Kirk Douglas interfere to enhance his leading character into a combo scientist, playboy and sure-shot action man? Also starring Ulla Jacobsson, Richard Harris, Michael Redgrave, and every over-fifty English name actor not nailed down.

A review for a movie not on video disc. CineSavant bears down hard on a now-obscure UK thriller that proves a crossroads for several key themes of modern terror: Nazis, bacteriological warfare and paranoid conspiracies. ‘007’– associated writer Jack Whittingham scripted a tale that connects old-school espionage to visionary super-crimes against humanity, the thriller genre of ‘The Unthinkable.’ Who’s the threat? An innocuous little doctor with a horrendous secret background and a somewhat preposterous ability to go undetected as he kills to assume and protect a new identity. The techno-chiller was released in 1948 yet seems screamingly relevant now.

American Horror Story concluded the bonkers adventure that was its ninth installment in November 2019, and we're more than ready for what's in store for season 10. Since the anthology series was renewed for season 10 back in 2018, we didn't have to worry about whether it was coming back, either. And, thanks to a recent reveal by Ryan Murphy, we now know a little more about what to expect in next season's American Horror Story: Double Feature!
On March 20, Murphy revealed the title for season 10, explaining that Double Feature will differ from previous chapters by telling two mini-stories. "Two horrifying stories, one season," he wrote. "One by the sea, and one by the sand." Fans have already been tossing around the idea of season 10 featuring aquatic creatures thanks to several previous reveals by the creator, including promotional art, photos of a beach,...

During a three-hour discussion on a recent episode of “The Empire Film Podcast,” Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantino revealed the existence of their makeshift quarantine movie club over the last 9 months. As Wright explained, “It’s nice. We’ve kept in touch in a sort of way that cinephiles do. It’s been one of the very few blessings of this [pandemic], the chance to disappear down a rabbit hole with the hours indoors that we have.” Tarantino added, “Edgar is more social than I am. It’s a big deal that I’ve been talking to him these past 9 months.”
A bulk of the film club was curated by none other than Martin Scorsese, who sent Wright a recommendation list of nearly 50 British films that Scorsese considers personal favorites. In the five months Wright spent in lockdown before resuming production on “Last Night in Soho” — and before he received the...

2020 sucked in so many ways, but nobody told the movies. Here are some of my favorite things from a very, very weird year for all of us.
Color Out of Space (dir. Richard Stanley)
Richard Stanley’s return to directing after too many years away resulted in one of my favorite films of 2020 full stop, containing a great, unhinged performance from my favorite actor Nicolas Cage. It’s a neon-soaked nightmare and features maybe the second most disturbing visual of any movie in 2020; I won’t say what it is except that it involves family bonding. This is a bold, confident film, one that's weird, but never cold and disturbing without the nihilism of, say, Stanley's own Hardware. It's a horror film that's not afraid to go to really big places. It presents us with a true, exciting vision. Richard Stanley is back, and he's brought the best Lovecraft adaptation in 30 years with him.

Get Ready for Halloween with Some Vintage Horror on Turner Classic Movies this September and October
I don’t know about you, but this writer is more than ready to start looking forward to the Halloween season. And one of the staples of my own ongoing cinematic celebration every year is checking out all the wonderful classic horror movies that Turner Classic Movies airs on their channel. And considering the mess that 2020 has been over the last several months, I thought this year it might be helpful to also include all the genre films that will be playing on TCM throughout the month of September, as it’s never too early to get ready for Halloween.
Check out all the great classic horror movies playing on the small screen over the next two months on TCM, and be sure to set those DVRs so you don’t miss any of the classic films that are sure to get you into the Halloween spirit this year.

Snapchat is the biggest multimedia messaging and video-sharing social networking service whose content you’ve never watched.
Yes, it’s self-identified by its founders as a “camera” company. It’s that, too. By leveraging the power of one of the most powerful computers/photo-taking devices ever created (aka your phone), the platform’s augmented reality offerings are used by over 170 million people every single day and are getting more robust by the quarter. Wouldbe competitors with literal billions in venture funding can’t get sticky with consumers. Snapchat makes it looks easy.
And yes, I realize you’ve seen Snapchat before -- from vomiting rainbows circa 2015 to both sanctioned and pirated compilations of the app’s user-generated ephemera on YouTube. But, unless you’re between the ages of 13 to 24, you’re more likely to get your daily quota of media consumption from some other source.

Masked singer Orville Peck’s distinctive aesthetic plays around with masculinity, queer desire, and cowboy ruggedness, which he delivers in a romantic, trembling croon. Likewise, his productions such as “Dead of Night” tend toward the narcotic and spacious, like a nighttime drive in a David Lynch film. His newly released cover of Bronski Beat’s 1984 synth-pop hit “Smalltown Boy,” however, feels positively suffocating by comparison.
Rightfully recognized as a classic gay anthem, “Smalltown Boy” perfectly articulates that claustrophobia of a boy who flees the place where he grew up because...

Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has announced multi-year programming renewals with the NFL, NBA and several major media companies, set a new slate of originals and unveiled a new camera and augmented reality tools.
The raft of announcements came as Snap presented its second partner summit Thursday. Originally slated for April, it was pushed back due to the effects of Covid-19, and was dropped online in virtual, on-demand form, with CEO Evan Spiegel and other executives speaking in front of a green screen.
Snapchat’s popular Discover video platform, which was first introduced in 2015, has been embraced by several traditional players eager to reach the social platform’s coveted youth audience. On Thursday, Snap said Disney, ESPN, NBCUniversal, ViacomCBS, the NBA and the NFL have all expanded their Discover deals.
The multi-year deals include new shows and originals, mobile shows created exclusively for Snapchat’s audience, along with continued production of existing original franchises.

For having the distinction of presenting one of cinema’s first interracial relationships between a black man and a white woman, Basil Dearden’s 1951 socially conscious film noir Pool of London seems woefully neglected. Of course, Dearden himself was a director difficult to classify or tie into a particular movement or period.
Having begun his career as a director through Ealing Studios, his most notable features would bluntly tackle race relations and homosexuality, while his penchant for genre includes his contributions to the 1945 omnibus Dead of Night, the bizarre The Mind Benders (1963) and underrated crime drama Woman of Straw (1964).…...

The theme for the 10th season of “American Horror Story” might need to change amid production shutdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic, as Ryan Murphy told TheWrap his original idea for the coming installment of his FX anthology has to be filmed during the warmer months.

I don’t know what we’re going to do. I don’t know what I’m gonna do next with that show. I don’t know if I’ll accelerate another season or wait till next year to shoot this one.”

The anarchic director on good stuff to see for free including a stack of colourised black-and-white film treasures
What I do during lockdown … is pretty much what I would do anyway. Read books, stare at screens, listen to music, play with the dogs, go for walks. My wife Tod and I are very fortunate because we live in a rural area and there’s no prohibition against walking in Oregon! The images of honest British footpath walkers being harassed by police drones are most troubling. What will the cops do with the malefactors? Send ’em to court, and jail?
Anyway, as far as films are concerned we don’t have a good TV signal or a streaming contract so we’re limited to things that we can see for free. Fortunately, there is a considerable amount of good stuff for nothing if you dig for it! We watched Dead of Night...

Orville Peck plays the lone cowboy in the video for his melancholy new song “Summertime.” It is the masked singer’s first offering from the follow-up to 2019’s Pony and the first under his new agreement with Columbia Records.
Driven by rumbling, low-end lead guitar licks and Peck’s resonant baritone, “Summertime” conjures the same feeling of loneliness and desolation as his previous releases “Dead of Night” and “Turn to Hate.” “Watch each other fallin’/Always catch the call and whistle while we’re walkin’/Something inside me dies,” he sings,...

Ryan Murphy has released the first poster for Season 10 of “American Horror Story” and we truly don’t know what to make of it — other than it’s clearly teasing a haunting new seaside theme.
In the photo, which the “Ahs” mastermind posted to Instagram Tuesday, we see a pair of grimy hands resting on the banks of some nasty looking beach we definitely wouldn’t want to visit.
Murphy captioned the photo: “Things are beginning to wash up on shore…”

We're still months away from the debut of American Horror Story Season 10, and aside from knowing the cast, we don't know much.
Co-creator Ryan Murphy took to Instagram on Tuesday to give fans their biggest hint to date with a poster.
“Things are beginning to wash up on shore,” is the only clue Murphy offered up alongside the photo.
The image features a pair of hands that certainly appear to be clawing their way out of the ocean.
Could the series be tackling zombies as the central theme of Ahs 10?
Another possibility is that the new episodes take place on an island, and these hands belong to one of the survivors.
The latter would be way more interesting.
The Walking Dead has zombies covered with its three shows and an upcoming movie.
An island setting would be the most likely scenario, especially when you consider this is the second time we've seen the ocean.

Macaulay Culkin is the surprise name amongst the announced cast for FX’s American Horror Story Season 10.
American Horror Story, which is now pushing a decade on the air, may be a television institution that’s seemingly done it all across its various anthology iterations, but the long-in-the-tooth Ryan Murphy-created FX series is proving that it’s thirsty for more with the surprise announcement of its tenth season cast, revealing former child superstar Macaulay Culkin!
Murphy, in what has become a tradition, personally unveiled the ensemble lineup for American Horror Story Season 10 on his Instagram with a teaser video for the untitled anthology iteration. Set to the soundtrack of masked cowboy singer Orville Peck’s wistfully dreamy “Dead of Night,” the clip showcases the gloomy scenery of a beach, over which the revelatory cast credits roll.

Two mainstays of the series in Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will be coming back for this season of the FX show, after missing out on season 9. Last season was the first edition of the series to not feature the duo.
Culkin, who is of course known for his child actor roles in the “Home Alone” franchise, most recently appeared as a guest star on the Hulu comedy series “Dollface.” The “Ahs” role will mark his first series regular part in a live-action TV series. His last substantial TV role, other than the Adult Swim stop-motion show “Robot Chicken,...

In the early days of smartphone video, shooting something vertically amounted to sacrilege to many purists who believed only in landscape orientation. Snapchat and TikTok eroded that sentiment enough that the upcoming Quibi platform will let viewers watch mobile-only shows both vertically and horizontally. Now, pioneering filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov is taking it a step further: His upcoming $10 million film “V2. Escape From Hell” is a World War II drama shot with vertical framing and smartphone audiences in mind.
Deadline reports the movie will be the world’s first blockbuster shot in that orientation. Production starts next week on the Russian film, starring Pavel Priluchny as Mikhail Devyatayev, a captured Soviet pilot who leads an escape from a German concentration camp by hijacking an aircraft.
The fact-based film is produced by Bekmambetov’s Bazelevs and Voenfilm in partnership with Russia’s biggest mobile phone operator Mts, which will release the Russian...

Exclusive: TikTok meets the movies? Prolific Russian director and producer Timur Bekmambetov, whose credits include multiple Hollywood pics such as Searching, Ben Hur and Wanted, is set to go into production on V2. Escape From Hell, the first blockbuster movie made entirely in a vertical format.
Bekmambetov is credited as one of the inventors of the ‘Screenlife’ film and TV format, which sees events unfold from the perspective of a computer, tablet or smartphone. Movies he has worked on in the genre include Unfriended ($63m U.S. box office) and the John Cho-starring Searching ($75m). He also produced 2015 pic Hardcore Henry, an action movie shot entirely in the first-person perspective.
Now, Bekmambetov has set his sights on pioneering the vertical video as a viable format for major feature films, flipping the traditional landscape format. Vertical content has previously been popularised by platforms including TikTok and Snapchat for short form on mobile.

Orville Peck brought some gloomy atmospherics for his late-night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live, performing the song “Dead of Night” from his debut album Pony on Wednesday night’s episode.
Wearing his trademark fringed mask and bathed in murky red light, Peck begins the song with only the help of a trebly electric guitar. “The sun goes down another dreamless night,” he intones, his lyrics mirroring the darkness of his stage setup. When the song reaches the second verse, a spotlight illuminates Peck and his band, who give the...

Masked singer Orville Peck celebrates a whirlwind year in the newly released video for “Nothing Fades Like the Light.” The song closes out Peck’s 2019 debut, Pony.
Interspersed with snippets of audio from Peck and his band, the video captures the singer’s rapid rise to fame in the last year — his crowds get bigger and more enthusiastic, and the bits of audio from the group acknowledge that the winds are changing for them. Along with the excitement, the Deni Cheng-directed video also shows the exhaustion of trying to meet those intense demands,...
