Miriam Nelson, who worked extensivley as a choreographer during Hollywood’s golden age, died on Aug. 12 at her home in Beverly Hills, Calif., according to her longtime friend James Gray. She was 98.
Nelson was the choreographer for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “The Jolson Story,” “Picnic,” “Hawaii,” “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice,” and “The Apartment.” She also appeared as an actress in “Double Indemnity,” “Cover Girl,” “The Jolson Story,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’,” and “Pillow Talk.” Nelson choreographed the dancers on the opening day of Disneyland in 1955, two Academy Awards and two Super Bowl halftime shows.
Nelson was widely known for her enthusiasm for dancing. John Wayne once shouted to a group taking a break on set as she walked by, “Run for the hills, fellas! Or Miriam will make you dance!”
She was born Miriam Lois Frankel on Sept. 21, 1919, in Chicago and began tap dancing at a very young age.

Debbie Reynolds, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84, was one of the last icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Throughout her nearly seven decade career, Reynolds made a name for herself as a triple-threat singer, dancer, and actor — with roles in big-screen MGM musicals and Broadway shows. She was also chart-topping recording artist and dynamic live performer, who toured the country for years as a night club entertainer.
Music was an inescapable part of Reynolds career. Here are 11 of her best musical moments.

Comedy may be the most subjective of genres, but Ivan Reitman knows what the people want. Over the course of his 40-plus-year career as a director, producer, and writer, the Slovakia-born/Canada-bred filmmaker has been a key player in some of Hollywood's most iconic comedies — Animal House, Meatballs, and Stripes among them. But few films have amassed as passionate a following as one particular hit: Ghostbusters.

One recent evening, Rita Coolidge sat at her kitchen table in pink cowboy boots, sipping a glass of chardonnay when the conversation drifted to Crosby, Stills & Nash. Above: Italian 4-foglio for The Joker is Wild (Charles Vidor, USA, 1957). Art by Enzo Nistri.Frank Sinatra, arguably the most important entertainer of the 20th century, was born 100 years ago today. I’ve become a little obsessed with him over the past week after watching Alex Gibney’s terrific 2-part, 4-hour HBO portrait Sinatra: All or Nothing at All. This of course got me thinking about Frank in movie posters, and I realized that I could barely come up with images of Sinatra posters in my head. While his best album covers are indelible and iconic, his movie posters tend to be less so. Scrolling through his filmography I realized that part of the problem is that his greatest films—On the Town, From Here to Eternity, Guys and Dolls, Some Came Running, Ocean’s 11—were almost always ensemble films in which Sinatra was never the standalone star, and so...

Someone find the phone! The Camp Firewood counselors always said they would meet again 10 years after their last day at camp, but it looks like they're going back in time instead. That's right. The cast of the 2001 cult-classic comedy Wet Hot American Summer is set to reprise their roles as some of the worst camp counselors in history. But instead of picking up after the last day of camp in 1981, the new Netflix series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp appears to be taking the Camp Firewood staff all the way back to the beginning of their summer of debauchery.

Last year, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles released one of 2013's most uplifting songs with "Brave," a track so invigorating, Taylor Swift attests that she pops it on when she's having a low-self-esteem day. The song's sentiment surely appealed to Oprah, who has a full section of her website dedicated to "Inspiration." And now Bareilles has teamed with Own: Oprah Winfrey Network, recording a bright version of the 1967 Jackie Wilson classic "Higher and Higher" that'll air on Own to promote the network's summer lineup.

Alexandra Burke is to star in a re-telling of the Passion for BBC One's live Good Friday broadcast.
The 25-year-old former X Factor winner will perform renditions of 'Amazing Grace' and '(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher' in The Great North Passion.
The programme will be presented by Fearne Britton, while The Futureheads will also perform during the show.
Burke said: "Gospel has always had a big influence on my music. I love that spiritual sound, so to perform such heartfelt songs in the context of re-telling the incredibly powerful story of the Passion will be an amazing experience."
Burke will be accompanied by a massed choir of local singers, along with other performers and opera singer Graeme Danby.
Meanwhile, she will also perform her brand-new song 'Where Do Hearts Go?'.
Audience members also have the opportunity to join the choir and sing on stage with Burke.

Viennese operetta and film star of the 30s who fled to America after the Anschluss
Between the two world wars, during the so-called "silver age" of Viennese operetta, the coloratura soprano Marta Eggerth, who has died aged 101, reigned supreme on stage and, above all, on screen. In the films of the 1930s, the blonde, wide-eyed beauty's bright bell-like tones and charming personality provided a welcome relief from ruinous inflation, world depression and the approaching sound of Nazi jackboots.
The leading operetta composers of the day, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, Oscar Straus, Robert Stolz and Paul Abraham, all wrote songs for her films. However, by 1938, after the Anschluss, with the exception of Lehár, all of them, being Jewish, had fled Vienna for the Us. Eggerth and her husband, Jan Kiepura, the celebrated Polish tenor, who both had Jewish mothers, also left Austria for America, where they continued their singing careers.

June 4th is coming up soon so Capcom and Dontnod are showing off their version of near future with the dystopian, memory hacking game, "Remember Me" hear in New York. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to check out the full demo as I was still nostalgie-tripping over "DuckTales" but I did get a few hands on moments with some combat and explored a bit of the seedy underbelly of Neo Paris.
Agile, Fluid Combat
Real talk: "Batman: Arkham Asylum" changed brawlers for the better ( I know -- bold stance to take). I'm not saying Dontnod ripped the idea straight from the Dark Knight but the similarities are hard to miss. Nilin is a very agile brawler, easily transitioning punches and kicks effectively from enemy to enemy. The section I played focused on melee characters, so I'm not sure how it'll be fleshed out against enemies packing heat. Additionally,...

Aren’t video games super cool? Unlike movies and books – two mediums of storytelling which selfishly prevent you from getting directly involved in the action – video games put you, the gamer, in charge. That’s right, you’re the hero, so save the princess, assassinate a ruthless dictator or, uh, drive a crime lord to a strip club if you’re playing Grand Theft Auto.
Truth is, video games are just an illusion. As wonderful as those magical swirling pixels are, you’re not really leaping around the Mushroom Kingdom absorbing coins into your body. You’re in your room with your eyes glued to the TV because you just unlocked that secret costume for Nina Williams in Tekken.
We know: it’s disappointing to comes to terms with the fact you’re not really Gordon Freeman. You’re not actually anything like Nathan Drake. You don’t even have a patch on Kirby,...

If you’ll allow me to paraphrase Phillip Phillips (covering the Zombies), “it’s that time in the (American Idol) season for loving (our favorites).” Indeed, the Idoloonie Nation has devoted the last four months to auditioning dozens of singers for the role of America’s Next Top iTunes Obsession, and with each of the five remaining finalists having delivered 13 live solo performances, our allegiances have pretty much been pledged, our opinions have been pretty well formed, our speed-dialing fingers have been worn down to bone and sinew (as has the space between Randy Jackson’s ears).

American Idol Top 5 Perform: Shake It Out
When I first saw the song list on the American Idol Twitter account, I sighed. If anything comes out of this season, I think it's that all the contestants are terrific singers, but terrible at song choice. (Colton may have been the lone exception, and he even made a lot of mistakes.) But after the night was over, I had to admit, there were only three performances below a B, and they all belonged to the same contestant.
I'd also like to note that as a long time fan of American Idol, my favorite contestant has never left before top three. So it was a little jarring for me to watch without Elise. Last night's theme was songs from the 60s and Brit pop, and instead of going in performance order, I think I'd like to go from worst to first. So here we go.

The theme this week on "American Idol" are two-fold - the first song is the 1960s and the second one is Brit pop. It isn't our favorite week for the Idols, though Jessica Sanchez does show once again how she's head and shoulders above the rest of them talent-wise.
1. Hollie Cavanagh, "River Deep, Mountain High," Tina Turner
This is a nice choice for her because it's a big song, like she always shines on, but it's up-tempo, so it's not just another stand-there-and-sing ballad. Hollie also looks to be having (gasp!) fun, which is not something she always comes across as having. The sparks of personality should really help her out. The chorus is particularly good for her and then she's kind of breaking it down like a go-go dancer, straight out of the 1960s. Fabulous. Also, we really dig the horn section.

A potential bromance sputtered awkwardly. Ryan Seacrest pretended not to know the difference between a daffodil and a tulip. J.Lo and Steven Tyler respectively admitted to never having heard “The Letter” and “Bleeding Love.” And Randy Jackson one-upped them by going all “durrr”-faced when confronted by the word “crustacean.” (In his defense, it does contain more than two syllables.)

When music legends agree to appear on "American Idol," the producers probably don't question the congruity of which giant appears on which theme week. So let's ignore the fact that it's British week and celebrate the fact that The E Street Band's Little Steven Van Zandt is lending his expertise to the Top 5 as they take on tunes from across the pond.
And just what are Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez singing this week? I like "We're All Alone," "Higher and Higher," and my favorite is a song I will always love in the face of universal derision, "All Time High." A gospel brunch on the 28th floor of the Millbank Tower on London’s South Bank was something I approached with equal parts trepidation, cynicism and anxious excitement. Most thrilling to me was the opportunity to see London from a great height whilst enjoying some good food and drink, but, to be honest, I wasn’t sure how I’d fare with the gospel music. I guess, to be honest, it’s because this was a Sunday and I was having flashbacks to my childhood and my Church of England schooling. In contrast to that, however, I have always enjoyed the sound and soul of gospel music and it is a world removed from the drab hymns of my youth, so I don’t know why I was a tad tentative going into this.

"American Idol" found some gems in the capital of country music when it took to Nashville, Tn. After a terrifyingly screechy high note that makes all three of our cats go bonkers, the strains of Carrie Underwood sing us into Nashville. She will turn out to be quite the foreshadowing bookend of the episode.
Speaking of terrifying, we have a girl from Palm Beach by way of Springfield, Mo who is like a "Saturday Night Live" character but real. So we're starting with this nonsense, are we? Why? Why do we waste time on this crap? Irritating.
Thankfully we move on to exes Rob Bolin and Chelsee Oaks (who live together) who are auditioning for "Idol" together. Sounds like they are destined for the Friend Zone, because Rob is in love with Chelsee, but Chelsee is not in love with Rob. They finally sing and they are both decent singers.

As a rule, songs about miners haven't generally been as upbeat as the news we are watching now on CNN. So here's a largely uplifting playlist for all the miners in Chile, and all the people who love them. These songs are sent out today in hopes that "The Rising" continues and that beautiful "Tunnel Of Love" keeps bringing them all home safe and sound. The Rising - Bruce Springsteen Up, Up & Away - The 5th Dimension Lift Me Up - Jeff Lynne Higher Ground - Stevie Wonder Rise Up - Diane Birch A Higher Place - Tom Petty Goldmine - The Pointer Sisters Dream Of A Miner's Child - Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys Rescue Me - Fontella Bass Up! - Shania Twain (you're Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher - Jackie Wilson Coal Miner's Daughter - Loretta Lynn Safe And Sound - Sheryl Crow Way Down.

28 year old Richard Thomas was featured having his dreams dashed on tonight’s X Factor show.
The married singer showed off his two children, Chloe, 8 and Leigthon, 1. He told the cameras that he has been singing in pubs and clubs for years but wants to take the next step.
He said:
For my job I play a lot of clubs and pubs. I enjoy it but a lot of clubs have closed down and it’s getting hard for artists but I don’t know anything else. I wouldn’t have met my wife if I hadn’t of sang cos I met her at a place I was singing. My family are very supportive. My wife knows what I’m doing it for. I said to her, if I’m successful then we’re going to have the life we really want. I really want to do better for myself and my family.

HollywoodNews.com: Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Mick Jagger, U2, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, Sam Moore et al are all coming to DVD on September 28th from last fall’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concerts.
I’m usually pretty critical of the Rock Hall, but I’ll let that pass this time. The performances were so good, especially from the first night, that it’s worth enjoying them.
Of course I am particularly partial to Bruce Springsteen’s extended set with “Soul Man” Sam Moore, Billy Joel, John Fogerty, Tom Morello and Darlene Love, and the E Street Band. The YouTube video is attached below. And don’t miss the big finale with all those guys doing Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher.” It was the crowning moment of the two night event.

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to be invited to interview all the main cast of the new Disney / Jerry Bruckheimer movie, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. We also got to interview Mike Newell, the Director and Jordan Mechner who invented the original computer game back in 1989 on the Apple 2 computer.
I’ve already put up the interview with the Prince of Persia creator, Jordan Mechner and Mike Newell and we still have interviews with Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, to come.
Today we have Sir Ben Kingsley who plays Nizam in the movie. Please note, this interview contains spoilers but this is such a great interview where Sir Ben tells us how he got into acting and how he finds his characters that he plays and I urge you to read it because I think you’ll love it. The Inspirational Song choices are available on iTunes, so we thought we'd offer some suggestions for the "American Idol" Top 7.
We will admit that the song list is rather weird -- some of the songs don't exactly strike us as "inspirational," plus you have to automatically discount certain songs. For example...
The Idols should probably steer clear of the other Idol songs. Like "A Moment Like This" is the No. 1 Kelly Clarkson "Idol" moment, so we're not sure they should try that one. Doing other Idol hits is just a little too meta. We'd call that a big no-no.
Then there are the over-played barf-worthy songs like "Greatest Love of All" and "That's What Friends Are For." We'd advise steering clear of those too, especially since "Greatest Love" should just be retired after Cordelia Chase did it for the "Buffy" talent show. Then there are a few duets on the list,...

Date Night
Directed by: Shawn Levy
Cast: Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mark Wahlberg
Running Time: 1 hr 27 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: April 9, 2010
Read Calhoun Kersten’s Top 7 Movie Married Couples (that kick ass)
Plot: Claire and Phil Foster (Tina Fey and Steve Carell) are a suburban New Jersey couple simply walking through their marriage like it’s a routine. Phil decides to take Claire out in the city to rekindle the marriage. When they’re mistaken for another couple, suddenly their lives are at stake, involving cops, mobsters and a shirtless man.
Who’S It For? Without a doubt, this one is obvious, you’re going to see it coming … this one is for married couples. The other audience will simply consist of people looking to see Carell and Fey at the top of their game.
Expectations: This is one of those films I was hoping for. I wasn’t hoping it would be good.

What should the "American Idol" Top 10 sing for the R&B/Soul week? Make your picks here.
Even though Usher kinda spilled the "Idol" mentoring beans over the weekend, it was officially announced during the Wednesday, March 24 results show that he would be mentoring the Top 10 for R&B/Soul week.
We love that R&B/Soul reaches way back into Motown because some of the non-Michael Lynche singers need some oldies thrown in there.

Somehow, in a bid to make the Sunday-evening-eating monster that is Dancing On Ice even more unpalatable, ITV have chosen to hire Michael Ball to replace Robin Cousins. The five-person judging team was overloaded anyway – I’d have been happy to have a four-person panel and more of Jason Gardiner’s classic spiteful comments!
Anyway, we’re covering Dancing On Ice live tonight – this post will have judge’s comments, a scoreboard and some of my own commentary on each act. Enjoy! And leave loads of comments!

How did this happen. When did it happen? Was it the crash or the Mad(off) men or the shock and awe of the (don't bet on the) banks and the bailout (rages)? What happened to the good old days? They were never that good, as each successive generation supplanted the one before. "Here Son, stand on my shoulders, reach for the stars." Higher and higher till you retired. A gold watch and a fixed income, yours for life. When did that change? What happened? A financial Mt. Everest that once was scaled has now let loose a tirade of snow and ice, slippery and treacherous, and we are all struggling for a foothold and purchase as we are pulled closer and closer to the edge. Many we have watched go over it. Makes me think of Touching the Void, the stunning...

Prefaced only by the ultra-new "Wrecking Ball" at the top of the show, the Boss and his band launched into the 20 song opus of love and dreams and youth in Jersey. New York — During his introduction at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night (October 29), Tom Hanks brought up a good question: "Does rock and roll need a hall of fame?"
