Fort Apache actor John Wayne had experience working with a wide array of his peers on sets over the years. His conservative political beliefs put him at odds with many co-stars over the years, but he still had a certain charm that enticed many of those around him. Wayne went out of his way to help those in need on his movie sets, which was exactly the case when a female co-star fainted while working on Fort Apache due to heat stroke.

John Wayne, Robert Ryan and some thrilling color combat footage grace this Howard Hughes WW2 aviation epic, that’s famous for being the odd-title-out in the filmography of Nicholas Ray. Just how did the politically diverging Ray and Hughes get along so well? The Wac’s sensational Technicolor restoration does the real combat footage a big favor: minus scratches and dirt, it looks better than ever.

To mark the release of Vanishing Point and Flying Tigers, both out now, we’ve been given a copy of each on Blu-ray to give away to 1 winner.
Vanishing Point
Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, the last American hero, who sets out to prove that he can drive from Denver to San Francisco in just fifteen hours. Along the way, he meets an old prospector, a nude woman on a motorcycle, and a blind D.J. who “sees” danger ahead in this super-charged, action-packed adventure!
Flying Tigers
The American Volunteer Group, or Flying Tigers, fight bravely for China’s freedom despite the fact that they are greatly outnumbered. Squadron leader Jim Gordon (John Wayne) gets a new recruit when Woody Jason (John Carroll) joins the group. Woody signs up only because he needs money to pay for a breach-of-promise suit. His egotism and mercenary motives gain him the ill-will of fellow fliers.

Railroad Tigers is a special breed of cinematic import so rooted in cultural normalities, it’s as if a wall stands between overseas viewers and total immersion. At heart, Jackie Chan’s latest adventure is a dangerous hicks-vs-military underdog mission – but comedic buffoonery distracts and disengages. Clarinets and oboes (or related instruments?) provide a bubbly soundtrack for a damning suicide mission, never to embrace the seriousness of sacrificial heft. Gunshots ring out as characters joke, while Chan’s cutesy martial artistry evokes a less-enthusiastic Drunken Master who fumbles clashing tonalities. I mean, it’s an immediate red flag when you endure more character-card introductions than Suicide Squad – that’s one runaway train you don’t want to imitate.
Chan stars as Ma Yuan, a humble railroad worker who also moonlights as a member of the Flying Tigers gang. Together, with his clan of misfits, Ma Yuan rebels against Japanese invaders.

Last week, news surfaced that was mostly indicative of how Hollywood works these days, with Morgan Creek announcing remakes of a handful of movies in their catalog including "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Major League," "Young Guns," "Flying Tigers" and "The Exorcist." Touching the horror classic in particular drew consternation from various corners of the web, including the director himself, who weighed in on the topic. "I completely denounce [the remake]" the filmmaker tweeted, adding that he doesn't believe Morgan Creek even has the rights to the original movie, just the lesser sequels. For their part, Morgan Creek were quick to tweet "despite what was printed" they won't be redoing "The Exorcist." Except that, "what was printed" was based on what the company's CEO Jim Robinson told Deadline. That's just a detail I guess... At any rate, it seems we can all breathe easy about "The...

We live in a world of reboots and remakes these days, so the fact that there are now rumblings of even more of them really shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. According to a new report, Morgan Creek Films is looking to bring Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Exorcist back to the big screen as they start selling off their library of films.
The studio is also responsible for the likes of The Last of the Mohicans and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, but any deal made would see them keep the rights to remake five of their past releases. Along with the two mentioned above, we may also end up seeing new versions of Major League, Young Guns, and Flying Tigers. All of these have potential to connect with moviegoers, but when and if they’re going to actually happen really remains to be seen at this point.

Morgan Creek Productions has hired the investment banking group Houlihan Lokey to sell off the domestic rights to its library of seventy-eight films.
The most interesting wrinkle in this story is that as part of any sale, Morgan Creek would not only retain TV rights to all the films but also retain remake rights for five of its key titles - "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Major League," "Young Guns," "Flying Tigers" and "The Exorcist". They would pay a percentage of the gross profit on any remake to the new owner of the library.
With no debts on the books, Morgan Creek CEO Jim Robinson says the profit from any sale would go back into its film production fund which has obviously stirred rumors that at least some of those aforementioned potential remakes are in the works.

Last week, I wrote about the awesome folks of Warehouse 13, whom I was lucky enough to meet after attending their panel at Dragon*Con. But they weren’t the only fantastic people at the con, oh no. In fact, Dragon*Con is always so packed with amazing guests that I never get to see or meet all of them, and am left lamenting the fact that I missed Dean Cain’s panel or never got to say hi to Jewel Staite or Sean Maher in the Walk of Fame, despite running around from hotel to hotel like a hyperactive kid in a candy store. But I did get to see and meet a lot of cool folks, and that’s what I’m here to share, so here we go!
The first event I got to was a fantastic Lord of the Rings panel, featuring Billy Boyd (Pippin), Craig Parker...

Prepare for some spectacular aerial combat in George Lucas' long-in-the-making passion project, Red Tails. Here's Ron's review of a great WWII adventure...
For most men, war is hell. For the men of the Red Tails, an all-black fighter squadron in a segregated United States Army during World War II, war is boring as hell. Despite their training, all the men of the Tuskegee experiment get to do are boring patrols and mop-up work while all the real fighting, flying, and dying is for whites only. Fortunately, as the bombers continue to get shot down as their escort fighters go off chasing German fighters, the Army Air Corps gets increasingly desperate.
Enter the Tuskegee Airmen, known for the red nose and tail paint patterns on their airplanes. The movie's focus is on one squadron of the group, led by Easy (Nate Parker) and composed of, at various times, Lightning (David Oyelowo...

Typecasting is a terrible fate to befall an actor. Many of them have suffered from it over the years, accepting role after role in similar films with similar plots and similar characters simply because they have no real alternative. However, in spite of the risks involved there are also those who subvert this association; those who have elevated themselves to near legendary status within their chosen genre. Their performances define it and are woven inextricably into its rich tapestry. Two such actors are pictured above and are the subject of this article – one, a silent and anonymous loner with no time for small talk and very direct methods of dealing with his adversaries, the other a straight talking, no – nonsense peacekeeper with a trademark southern drawl. Both are perhaps best known for their westerns, although they also directed, produced and starred in a variety of other films too including military epics and ‘unorthodox’ police procedurals.

…Or How The Fuck Did That Happen, Part Two
Where was I last week?
I was in the midst of a great crusade against the most terrifying villain ever unleashed upon the universe. A tyrant created by an evil greater than Mephisto – or Emperor Palpatine or Darkseid, choose your poison – whose sole purpose is to destroy humanity. A crafty, insidious, and totally nasty piece of work, capable of twisting even the greatest brains ever known – Einstein, Newton, Hawkings, Reed Richards – into Roquefort cheese, of destroying Rem sleep, of chaining even the raging Incredible Hulk to a chair for weeks.
Oh, yes, it was a battle for the ages. He tried driving me mad with visions of z-scores and ANOVAs and Pearson Correlations and Chi-Square Tests for Goodness. Of blinding me with rs = 1 – 6∑D2/n(n2-1) and Ssa = ∑T2ROW/nROW – G2/N and t = (M1 – M2) – (µ1 – µ2)/s...

They shall beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks;
One nation shall not raise the sword against another,
neither shall they learn war any more.
Isaiah 2:4
War is a nation’s ultimate commitment of blood and treasure. As such, the stories a people tells about its wars – and don’t tell – and the ways it remembers its wars – or chooses to forget them – tells us much about the kind of people they consider themselves to be at different times in their history, as well as the kind of people they really were…and are.
For most of the 20th century, the war film was a Hollywood staple. From one era to the next, war movies documented the nation’s conflicts, reflected the national consciousness on particular combats as well as on thinking going far beyond any one, particular war. They’ve been propagandistic and revisionist,...

Divided into three separate four-hour miniseries, Missions That Changed The War profiles: .The Doolittle Raid,. a seemingly insignificant mission that was designed to boost American morale but in retrospect, had a vital effect on the war with Japan; .Germany.s Last Ace,. a first-person account of Gunter Rall, the most decorated aviator in Hitler.s Luftwaffe, as he describes the misguided Nazi strategy on the eastern front; and .The Flying Tigers,. a series of bombing missions that prevented the fall of China. Two years ago, this news would have you running for the hills. John Woo and Tom Cruise, who made that hulking mass of mediocrity known as Mission: Impossible 2, are getting back together for a World War II epic called Flying Tigers.
Why would you have a recent change of heart? Well, Cruise has made smarter choices, like his Tropic Thunder cameo and the mostly solid Valkyrie and Woo, who went from one of the most promising import directors to one of the more embarrassing in a handful of years, has reportedly bounced back with his Chinese period drama Red Cliff. Another reason to be encouraged is that this film apparently has a script co-written by Christopher McQuarrie.
Coming Soon talked to Woo about the project last week, and here's his official synopsis:...

We heard that Valkyrie co-writer and producer Christopher McQuarrie was putting something together with the help of Mason Alley as a starring vehicle for Tom Cruise back in December of 2008. Now, Coming Soon reports that not only is Cruise.s involvement likely, but that Mission: Impossible II director John Woo will be the man behind the lens. In an interview with Cs Woo gave a brief description of Flying Tigers: .It's based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air Force fighting with the Japanese and they won the war. Also, it's the story of Clair Chennault, and they did a great contribution for the Chinese, and the Chinese people love and respect them. The whole story is about a friendship between a Chinese and an American and they worked together." Lieutenant General Claire Lee Chennault was...

John Woo and Tom Cruise on the set of Mission: Impossible II
Photo: Paramount Pictures Variety has posted an article discussing New Regency's upcoming development slate in which it includes a one-line item mentioning Flying Tigers, a film scripted by Valkyrie scribe Christopher McQuarrie with Tom Cruise attached to star. On top of that it mentions the project is on "the immediate horizon." What Peter Bart's article fails to mention is Flying Tigers will be directed by John Woo, which means this is a reunion for the Mission: Impossible II star and director.
As a matter of fact, it is actually John Woo's attachment that became the big news back in July of 2009 when Slash Film reported on a Chinese press conference in which Woo announced the film would be his next: This is an extremely important production. Currently, basic preparations for shooting work have already been made...

John Woo's new World War II film Flying Tigers has been in the works for some time now. The fighter squadron story emerged last December when it was part of a trio of projects that Tom Cruise was circling. Since then John Woo announced that he was making the Christopher McQuarrie and Mason Alley scripted picture his next project, but there's been no further updates. Now that all changes in a packed story from Variety about New Regency's upcoming projects, we almost missed the brief mention that Tom Cruise is attached to Flying Tigers, marking his grand return to the cockpit for the first time since 1986's Top Gun. ComingSoon also caught up with Woo recently and here's what he had to say about Flying Tigers: "It's based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air...

A brief mention of John Woo's upcoming project Flying Tigers in a Variety story about New Regency's future productions mentions that actor Tom Cruise is attached to star in the project written by Christopher McQuarrie, the co-writer of Cruise's previous film Valkyrie ), with Mason Alley. An earlier story about the project mentioned the screenplay was being written for Cruise, but that the actor wasn't attached, though that status may have changed in the past 11 months. Some might remember Cruise hired Woo to direct the 2000 sequel Mission: Impossible II , which grossed $550 million worldwide, so it would make sense that Woo and McQuarrie's involvement might be enough to convince Cruise to headline the WWII drama. ComingSoon.net spoke exclusively with Mr. Woo last week...

John Woo’s not finished with war yet.
The helmer of Hard Boiled, Face/Off, and Mission: Impossible 2 — and one of the most successful foreign-born directors ever to cross the pond — has a big month coming up: His new film Red Cliff will be having its long-awaited American release on November 20.
But Woo is already looking ahead to his next project, which will be decidedly more contemporary. In an interview with Collider, he said Flying Tigers, his Red Cliff follow-up, will be about an American volunteer group that worked with the Chinese Air Force to fight the Japanese during World War II. Audiences can expect Woo’s trademark extraordinary action sequences, but the movie will also focus on the friendship between the soldiers of these two nations.
Woo said the script about the unit, which was a private military contractor with 'mercenaries' consisting of former Us Army, Navy, and Marine Corps pilots/ground crew,...

John Woo’s dreams of staging the greatest aerial battles ever filmed over China is apparently going to be put on hold. At least, if this article by 24Fps is correct, which has the “Red Cliff” auteur setting aside his model toy planes for some swordswoman action with Michelle Yeoh and South Korean actor Woo-sung Jung (”Musa: The Warrior”). And oh yeah, John Woo will also be getting all Will Smith on us and is casting his daughter Angeles Woo, who according to Woo’s longtime producing partner Terrence Chang, will easily embody the role, since she’s been studying martial arts for the role of a female assassin. According to 24Fps, Woo has announced that “The Swordswoman’s World” will be his next movie instead of the “Flying Tigers” movie he had announced earlier, where Woo promised the aforementioned “greatest aerial battles ever filmed over China”. And I...

Hong Kong action auteur John Woo (“Hard Boiled”) will remain in China for his next film, a WWII epic about the 1st American Volunteer Group (aka The Flying Tigers), according to a report on /Film. You’ve no doubt seen the group’s iconic aircraft, known for having teeth painted on their noses. Maybe a few of you have even seen the 1942 John Wayne movie “Flying Tigers,” a then-contemporary fictionalized story of the now-legendary airmen.
Woo’s picture, currently titled “Flying Tiger Heroes,” will ostensibly present us with the real history of the Volunteer Group. The Flying Tigers consisted of Americans recruited to aid the Chinese Air Force against Japan prior to America’s entrance into World War II. Of course, the $160 million action flick will also wow us with what the filmmaker promises to be “the most spectacular aerial battle scenes ever seen in Chinese cinema.”

Elton John had Bernard Taupin, Josiah Bartlet had Sam Seaborn and Toby Zeigler, and now to the list of star/writer double-acts we can add Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie, with the Valkyrie co-writer confirmed to pen another likely Cruise star vehicle, New Regency's Flying Tigers.Never the most prolific writer, McQuarrie has hit something of a purple patch through his partnership with Cruise, with Flying Tigers his fourth ongoing collaboration with the actor. McQuarrie is also underway on scripts for The Monster Of Florence and The Champions (as reported by Empire last month), as well as espionage thriller The Tourist, another likely Cruise starrer. Flying Tigers will tell the story of a squadron of volunteer pilots helping the Chinese fight the Japanese before America entered the war, promising to send the Top Gun star back into the skies in a reboot of the John Wayne propaganda flick, and no doubt...
