For Your Eyes Only

Directed by John Glen

You probably have never heard this before, but my favourite James Bond film of all time, For Your Eyes Only, was the first 007 film I ever saw. (Spookily, this is exactly the same reason that my Huffington Post doppelgänger likes the film.)
But I don’t love Roger Moore’s fourth Bond film for nostalgic reasons, or at least not completely. Every so often, the 007 franchise strips Bond of his gadgets and gives us a back to basics story where a more ruthless secret agent has only his wits to fall back on: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Living Daylights, Casino Royale and For Your Eyes Only are the best examples. Of these, For Your Eyes Only stands...

Of all the brands crafting Mean Girls-themed products, Dylan’s Candy Bar is one of the more unexpected choices. At the very least, we thought it would be something like Nature Valley protein bars rebranding themselves as Kalteen bars, or even perhaps a “You go, Glen Coco” hot cocoa from Swiss Miss. Never the less, here we are and Dylan’s Candy Bar is celebrating National Mean Girls Day with a special line of sweets. Remember how Cady will always remember October 3 as the day Aaron Samuels asked her what date it was? Dylan’s remembers. Beginning tomorrow, September 1, and leading up all the way to the holiday, you will be able to buy Mean Girls-themed items from the candy brand. Among those that will be offered is the Kalteen bar ($5.25). The wrapper around this crispy peanut butter bar reads, “a weird nutrition ...

Entertainment Weekly has your first look at six of the contestants that will be competing on the next season of Survivor: San Juan del Sur — Blood vs. Water. Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark truly is the gift that keeps on giving. The much-balleyhooed musical debuted to disaster and scabrous reviews, but for a while it looked like it.s run was ultimately looking like a success. Sales died down, however, and ultimately, the show closed up shop, leaving behind tabloid drama, lawsuits, injuries, and a dubious chapter in the Spider-Man history where some of us had to pretend that villainess Swiss Miss was a part of canon. And now it.s fodder for yet another contentious legal battle between Marvel and Stan Lee Media Inc., according to THR. Stan Lee Media Inc., or Slmi, was by some accounts a poorly-run endeavor spearheaded by Marvel legend Lee, formed in the nineties only to promptly go bankrupt, forcing its shareholders to attempt to reclaim any shred of profitability they could find, which in many cases has been claiming ownership of...

How do you solve a problem like Maria? The Sound of Music Live!—starring Carrie Underwood, Stephen Moyer and Audra McDonald—aired on Thursday, Dec. 5, and the NBC TV special elicited mixed reviews from critics and celebrities alike. "When Underwood spoke her lines, she was as flat as the label on a Swiss Miss package of cocoa," The Washington Post's Hank Stuever wrote. Ouch. "If you stuck with it, The Sound of Music Live improved as it slowly ambled toward the romance between Maria and Captain von Trapp and the family's flight to freedom," he continued. Who in the world is more recognizable than Oprah Winfrey? Winfrey is one of the world's richest women seen in film, TV and all over the place with her Own network, her magazine "O" and her charitable globe-trotting. Apparently one idiot in Switzerland has been huffing too much Swiss Miss cocoa and obviously was not in the Oprah loop. Earlier this week, Oprah Winfrey mentioned to Entertainment Tonight's Nancy O'Dell that she faced racism while in Switzerland for Tina Turner's recent wedding. Oprah left her hotel for retail therapy. "I didn't have my eyelashes on but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear ... but obviously the Oprah Winfrey show is not shown in Zurich." Then like a scene...

The Oscars draw some of the most glamorous stars in the world, and while most manage to stun us with some of the most amazing red carpet looks we'll see all year, there's also always a handful of gals who take a sartorial misstep at the annual awards show. Take Uma Thurman, whose Christian Lacroix gown at the 2004 Academy Awards had many comparing her to a Swiss Miss, or Icelandic singer Björk, who ruffled many a feather at the 2001 show with her frothy swan gown. And while we weren't surprised the quirky singer hit the red carpet in an outrageous frock, we were a bit stunned when the usually flawless Gwyneth Paltrow turned up at the 2002 Oscars in a look that was more gothic than glam.

From Season Two's "Christmas Party" to Season Seven's "Classy Christmas," The Office has a rich history of great holiday episodes. "Dwight Christmas" was a worthy extension of that tradition.
It all begins and ends with the performance of the eponymous salesman who finally got to have Christmas done his way at Dunder-Mifflin. Rainn Wilson, and his ability to go the extra mile in Dwight's portrayal of Belsnickel, brought the half hour to a whole other level.
Seeing the smile on Dwight's face when Jim returned, and the subsequent giant man hug, was also a huge highlight. With Michael Scott no longer in our lives on a week-to-week basis, the relationship between Jim and Dwight has become the heart of The Office, and that heart was beating at an all-star level during "Dwight Christmas."

While Cannes’ Quinzaine struggles to reframe its identity, its former artistic director Olivier Père continues to impress in his new job at the Locarno Film Festival. On Wednesday, he and his programming team unveiled a lineup that is absolutely salivatory, a who’s who for high-minded cinephiles. Perhaps most impressive of all, he has managed to once again nudge the festival’s selection aesthetic even deeper into esoteric ‘experimental’ territory without seeming all that radical. More than any other festival, Locarno is the home for the edgy projects that are too sophisticated for Cannes, whose cold shoulder to avant-garde narrative filmmaking becomes more glaring with each passing year. Check out the complete line-up at the bottom of this page.

Answer: Milkmaids, your grandma's creepy doll collection and freakishly lanky runway models. Bonus points if you guessed right off the bat that Emma Stone wasn't going to make the must-wear list in this Swiss Miss snafu. After reviewing two weeks worth of the actress' red carpet outfits, we've come to the following conclusion… The Amazing Spider-Man star must be stuck in a job-sharing situation between two very different stylists. How else to explain all the flip-flopping between elegant outfits (Moscow, London and Paris) and the truly awkward getups (Tokyo,...

Archer is a spy/secret agent. Of sorts. He works for his mum, who is the Director of Isis (the International Secret Intelligence Service) and together with his secret agent colleagues he thwarts villains, travels the world, tries to avoid the jail-bait attentions of wealthy teenage heiresses and gets stuck in the Everglades. He thinks he’s pretty cool.

Archer is the latest adult-themed cartoon to try its hand, following in the wake of South Park, Family Guy and American Dad. Its deliberately low-fi animation style (it feels like something from the 1960′s) works just fine with its self-proclaimed “James Bond meets Arrested Development with a Mad Men twist” approach and as with all of these sorts of shows, the emphasis is on the jokes, the script and the comedic scenarios, rather than trying to out-do Pixar for immersive world-building.

With every season of Archer, the Isis team leaves the confines of the office and go on a trip together, intentional or not, that ends up being one of the funniest episodes of the season. With season 1, the group went on an airship planned to blow up in “Skytanic” and in “Swiss Miss”, they went to a winter resort. This year’s outing in “The Limited” takes them on a high-speed train to return a Nova Scotian freedom fighter, Bilko, to Canada, and stands up against those other great episodes.

Okay, I'll admit it: A few months ago I wouldn't even have entertained the idea of seeing "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" multiple times, let alone recommend that you see it. Back in January, when we published a list of five things we liked about the show and five things we hated, we had trouble coming up with enough items for the former, and had even more trouble narrowing down our list of the latter.
Since then, the budget-busting Broadway show has undergone a massive overhaul, with former director Julie Taymor departing the production, and an entirely new set of writers — including comics scribe Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa — brought on to rework the script.
With the show finally ending its record-breaking run of preview performances next week and marking its official Broadway debut, I found myself in the audience a second time to find out whether "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" had...

Much like last week's Monaco adventures, this week's Archer took us to a foreign land. This week's destination? The mother load of all spy destinations: Russia.
Normally, I'm a much bigger fan of Archer when the show forgets its a spy parody and keeps the dyfunction at home in the Isis offices. But this week, "White Nights," was actually a very welcomed surprise as it proved to be one of the series' best efforts.
Sure, this week didn't have a B story relying on the Isis goons and only mere cutaways to the Krieger-less core group as they weighed in remotely in the A story, but that didn't stop Archer from bringing it in the comedy department.
Archer didn't even have Lana or Ray during his adventure as he was hilariously miss-paired with long-time nemesis, Barry. These two characters play well off each other, but it was really Sterling and...

Coming off a streak of Triple A Archer episodes (yes, the A stands for Awesome), "Jeu Monegasque" didn't even stand a chance to win me over. Especially, when the episode was heavy on the Bond-parody side of things as the gang took a trip to Monaco.
We all know how I feel about these spy-heavy, stand-alone adventure. Don't? Then just check out my review of "Swiss Miss." Fine, I knew you were too lazy. Hint: not a fan.
It's not to say I didn't enjoy the gang's trip to the tiny country, but Archer is always at its strongest when it's stuck at the office or has most of the gang put together. Sure the show is a spy parody at its heart, but those make for some of the surprisingly weaker episodes.

This is the first episode of Archer, I think ever, that doesn't feature some sort of Isis mission. I was going to say "operation," but there is most definitely an operation in this week's episode. Just not the kind you normally see in a spy show.
A breast cancer scare has the entire Isis office on edge. Mallory's results come back negative, but the doctor discovers breast cancer in Archer. Archer exploits the kindness of his friends and makes peace with them before he goes under the knife.
This episode was very entertaining and certainly the most personal of the season. The entire episode takes place in either the Isis headquarters, Archer's apartment or the hospital. Archer does enjoy some time in Las Vegas with Woodhouse's brother, Dicky, via a brief still frame montage.

The Julie Taymor show Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is the most expensive Broadway production of all time, and one of the most troubled. It has been delayed multiple times, beset by injuries and subsequent investigations and union issues, and met with a scathing critical response. And yet, because reason rarely triumphs over curiosity, tickets are selling like crazy. The official opening date has been pushed back to March 15, and now in the three weeks before that date producers have reportedly hired Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to rewrite the book originally created by Julie Taymor and Glen Berger. He's also writing the American Psycho musical, but more important has written comics for Marvel, including a couple of Spider-Man stories. We don't know what changes he'll make, but given that reviews of Turn Off the Dark call it static, sketchy, ill-formed, incoherent, and tedious, there is some Herculean work to be done. One review called it "beyond repair,...

Wow. Now that should have been the Archer season two premiere. Picking up right after Archer discovered the chip in his brain and Pam returned from vacation, it fit much better with the timeline. Not to mention the episode was just better than last week's "Swiss Miss."
This week we were treated to some of my favorite Archer moments: just hanging out at the Isis office. Without even a mission during "A Going Concern," this spy comedy was more akin to an even more dysfunctional version of The Office. You know with less paper sales and more armed Odin agents in slightly darker black turtlenecks.
But that's just fine, because hanging out in the office means more from the amazing supporting cast of goons of Pam, Cheryl, Cyril, Gillette, and the amazing Krieger. Yeah, that's right, I'm finally on the Krieger bandwagon.

Archer kicked off its second season last night on FX. We broke down the episode earlier in our season premiere review. Now our staff has come together for a Q&A discussion.

What was one of your favorite Archer quotes from last night?
Dr. Toboggan: I like Archer's line of: "I can't be alone. That's when she strikes like a slutty little Ninja." This is one of the few times where I feel bad for Archer, for the first time he tries to do the right thing and it all just keeps backfiring.
Mark F: Lana: No. She looks like she's just turning 18. Archer: Exactly! Plus Europeans use the metric system which... Malory: Sterling Malory Archer!
Eric H: I'm a sucker for the recurring jokes on Archer so I'll give it to Malory's "Immigrants. Cramming their low riders full of free health care and.

Comedic genius Adam Reed (Sealab 2021, Frisky Dingo) has another cult hit on his hands. His latest effort, Archer, started off its second season this evening with a bang.
For the uninitiated, Archer is about the goings on at an American spy agency called Isis. Archer (H. Jon Benjamin), Lana (Aisha Tyler) Ray (Reed), Cyril (Chris Parnell), Kreiger (Lucky Yates), Pam (Amber Nash) and Cheryl (Judy Greer) all work under Mallory (Jessica Walter), the head of Isis and Archer's mother. The best way to describe the show is that it's a cross between Arrested Development and James Bond films.
In the season two premiere, a group of Isis employees heads to a snowy town in Switzerland to protect the daughter of a wealthy videotech distributor.
What sets Archer apart from other "adult" cartoons is how cleverly the dialogue is written. The lines sound ad-libbed and natural, which breathe life into the animated characters.

For whatever bizarre scheduling reasons, FX decided to air tonight's standalone episode, clearly designed as episode two, instead of next week's "A Going Concern," the natural follow-up to Archer's season one finale.
Bizarre executive decisions aside, the light-hearted "Swiss Miss" was a fun vacation to Switzerland with our favorite animated spy team after their long hiatus.
As a ridiculous fan of the show that has seen every season one episode multiple times and the episode in question twice, it's tough to figure out how to be critical and review this cartoon.
I will start off by saying, that although the adventures in Gestalt protecting Herr Schlotz and Anka might not be as strong as season one, fear not friends: there's some real gems in the seven season DVD screener FX sent me.
That said, "Swiss Miss" still had me entertained. If you can get over the cliched, over-used bit...

Ah, yes! Now I remember. In my Season 2 review of the FX comedy, I wrote about why I think it's swell, but I do have something more to share with you: A few thoughts about 'Swiss Miss,' the first episode of the new season. Consider them conversation-starters, because I'm very keen to hear how my fellow 'Archer' fans liked the season 2 premiere.

FX's subversive animated comedy Archer returns tonight and not a moment too soon, for television needs the gonzo spirit and out-there humor of this Adam Reed creation. The first seven episodes of Season Two of Archer, provided to press for review, might be the strongest to date, offering up a virtual cornucopia of sight gags, double entendre, shockingly foul language, superspy hijinks, and one of the worst examples of humanity in Hr executive Pam Poovey. To say that these memorable characters are flawed is an understatement of the highest order; they're so morally corrupt, so self-absorbed and tragically insane, that it makes for obsessive and unpredictable viewing. And that's perhaps the beauty and magic of Archer: in creating a cast of characters who are so reprehensible in every way, it's impossible to turn your eyes away from the carnage--both physical and personal--that follows in their wake. Along the way,...

Chicago – The second season premiere of “Archer” opens with a hysterical scene that ends with a suave super-spy saying “Look at me, I am the perfect gentleman.” Of course, the statement comes by virtue of the fact that Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) is pointing out that he’s not taking a softball joke set-up involving a 16-year-old German jailbait and her body hair. It’s the kind of unique humor you’ll find only on “Archer,” one of the more consistently clever and riotously funny shows on television, back tonight, Jan. 27, 2011 on FX.
Television Rating: 4.5/5.0
“Archer” is so funny that you can DVR it and watch it again (and truly should pick up the season one DVD, recently release by Fox). I’ll admit to watching the second-season premiere, “Swiss Miss,” more than once. There’s something about the best adult-driven animation that makes it incredibly rewatchable.

If we’re to believe today’s big news, then Bill Murray may very well be sitting at home at this very moment in front of a fireplace with a cup of Swiss Miss and the script for Ghostbusters 3. That’s a pretty exciting thought…for about five minutes. Then the inevitable concerns arise — concerns like, is this really a good idea? Do we really want to check back in with Dr. Venkman, Dr. Stantz, and Egon after all these years? What if they’re…well, what if they’re not funny anymore? Wouldn’t it be better if...

This article may be apocryphal considering that the most expensive Broadway production is still in previews, and its start date has been held up by a litany of horrendous accidents, injuries, and plot elements that would make Scooby-Doo go “Aroo?”
As a die-hard comic book geek and as someone who loves a Costco-sized serving of schadenfreude, I have been following news about Julie Taymor’s musical fiasco, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. I’m sure I’m not the only one who upon reading report after report of injury or “Wtf” reviews would come to the conclusion “How the Hell can this continue?
In the event that it does continue, here’s a list of things that must happen altogether for me to see Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark:

While Sony and director Marc Webb prepare to reboot the Spider-Man franchise in theaters for a Summer 2012 release, Across the Universe director Julie Taymor is bringing the swinging superhero to Broadway in the most expensive musical ever made.
At $65 million, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” sounds wildly ambitious, featuring high-flying actors dangling above the audience, the specially-written songs of U2’s Bono and the Edge, and ten super villains, including Arachne, a new character; another new baddie called Swiss Miss; Cletus Kasady a.k.a Carnage; Swarm, a villain literally made of bees; Green Goblin; Grim Hunter and his father Kraven the Hunter; Electro; and Lizard, the villain in Webb’s movie.
But those lofty aspirations have proved problematic for Taymor who weathered countless delays, financial struggles, actor departures, and even the broken wrists and feet of the show’s slingshotted performers, which spawned a round of safety investigations. Finally,...

[1] Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark had its first preview performance on Broadway Sunday night. So how did Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor's (Titus, Frida, Across the Universe) $65 million big stage comic adaptation hold up? Find out after the jump. Disclaimer: It should be noted that a preview performance is not final, much like a test screening of a feature film. The performers are basically putting on a dress rehearsal, and the director uses the audience to tweak and make changes before opening night. The show proper is set to open in January 11th 2011, giving them six weeks to get it right. Thus, please do not take these reader reviews as an accurate representation of the final stage performance. The consensus is that it is a visually stunning with major story issues and lackluster music, but still shows potential. New York Times [2]: The show stopped five times, mostly to fix technical problems,...

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark seems like a lunatic proposal– are any fanbases more distant than comic book geeks and Broadway mavens? At best, it could have been a Shrek: The Musical!-style cash grab. But director Julie Taymor is known for dementedly twisted theatrical visions. Also, Bono and the Edge are writing the music, and there aren’t any iPods in sight! (I don’t even think Bono knows who Spider-Man is. I’m convinced that the Edge just told him they were writing a musical about Abraham Lincoln or Jesus or something.) Now, Annie Leibovitz has taken some...

Made for a rumored $60 million dollars, the Broadway-bound Spider-Man musical (!) Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is slated to open in January 2011. The actors have rehearsed, the sets have been built, the costumes have been sewen and the tickets have gone on sale. So what does Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark look like?
The first images from the Julie Taymor influenced production have arrived, and they're weird in that Julie Taymor kind of way.
Taymor's always been a filmmaker that's known for her wild visual side. Look at her adaptations of William Shakespeare's Titus (1999) or The Tempest (slated for release next month), Frida or Across the Universe and you'll see that she's a daring visionary when it comes to fashioning new looks at old source material. So when it came to design the visual look of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Julie Taymor seemed like an interesting choice to make.

So you say you want your action comics set to music... (Just how gay are you?) The upcoming Spiderman musical was photographed for the pages of Vogue recently by Annie Leibovitz. See the photos at the attached URL, this may be the only chance you get to see anything about it outside of New York City, or gods help us, Chicsgo (owing to a pre-sold contract)
They cram three villans into the musical as well as a stunt double for all the dancing and jumping. No seriously, the figured he was in a mask as Spidey so why not hire someone pretty who can sing and let someone else do the hard work. So once again pretty is better than good acting.
Starring Reeve Carney as Peter, Emmanuel Brown as the stunt double/Spidey, Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane, PAtrick Paige as Green Goblin, Sean Samuels as Swiss Miss, and Collin Baja as Carnage.

The Spider-Man musical, titled Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, is still coming to Broadway, despite a recent delays mandated by the Department of Labor after several stunts couldn't be deemed safe. The show is set to start previews on November 28, finally giving us a chance to see exactly what Julie Taymor's vision of the famous webslinger will look like-- or rather, just how insane it will be. Lucky for us, Vogue has a preview of some of the costumes and puppetry that will be used to embody Spidey, Mary Jane, the Green Goblin, Swiss Miss and more characters, and. yikes. It's all very theatrical, of course, not just because it's a Broadway show but because it's Julie Taymor, known for her work with puppets on The Lion King and wild imagery in movies like Across the Universe and a general lack of restraint. Do any of these characters look...

Julie Taymor is a crazy person and I mean that in the best possible way. The woman who once made The Lion King not only tolerable but pretty damn great as a Broadway musical is headed back to the big stage and on the receiving end of her hyper-visual style this time is ... Spider-Man?
Yup. While Taymor has become famous for her big screen adaptations of live stage classics by William Shakespeare - Titus and The Tempest - she's bringing everybody's favorite radioactive teen to live theater with Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.
The opening date has been pushed back slightly on this due to an actor injury but things are still moving ahead and this month's edition of Vogue features the first images from Taymor's latest as shot by Annie Leibovitz. Featured in the shots are Spider-Man, Peter Parker, Mary Jane, The Green Goblin, Carnage and a new...

Last we heard from the "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" team, director Julie Taymor was defending the recent delays that pushed the expensive musical's premiere back to January 2011. Today, we have a set of new images from the blockbuster production, including our first look at the design for Carnage, one of several Spidey villains appearing in the show.
The latest issue of Vogue has the five images, which include a shot (embedded below) of Spider-Man (played by Reeve Carney) battling with Green Goblin (Patrick Page) while Mary Jane Watson (Jennifer Damiano) swoons, and our first look at the musical's version of Carnage. There's also an up-close shot of Spidey against a New York City backdrop (also embedded below), a picture of new villain Swiss Miss threatening Mary Jane, and a photo of Peter Parker out of costume with Mary Jane.

Here's a collection of great photos for the upcoming comic book Broadway musical Spider-Man Turn off the Dark, which is set to premiere in January at Foxwoods Theatre and includes songs by U2's Bono and The Edge. Just a few months ago, many were still wondering if Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark was ever actually going to happen. We finally got word in August that Spidey's Broadway musical will premiere on December 21st after the previews, which are set to begin on November 14th, and that means the cast and crew had to get together right away to really fine tune the piece. Sure enough, that must have been what was going on the past few weeks because just the other day Good Morning America was taken over by the production featuring a performance by Reeve Carney, the man who'll don the Spidey suit, and appearances by Bono and The Edge, who are responsible for the show's music and lyrics, as well as director and co-writer Julie Taymor.

Happy Monday folks! I spent some time with my 3D glasses on this weekend, so either way you cut it - ironically or unironically - I'm part of Resident Evil's box office win this weekend. It was also a weekend for festivals of fall, farmers markets and a surprising amount of fur and faux-fur being sold on the streets of New York. It seems odd to me that someone would buy any sort of fur off the street, but I guess that's where you have to get it these days. I'm tempted to discuss my friend Rachel Paton who used to send me dead things through the mail, but that's be a digression we can't afford this week... Dark Tower's mammoth deal got left out of my Things this week, as did True Blood, because I've done my best to keep this post under 4,000 words (sorry about last week,...

See those... beings above?
