- Pork is everything to Tate, an anxiety-riddled halfwit living in isolation. Tate's father was a notorious bandit who retreated to the unforgiving landscape for solace. - Elliot Guillespsie dreams of being the worlds greatest investigative reporter, ala his idol, Rod Reel. He enlists Toby, a suburban taxi driver, to be his cameraman, which Toby accepts in an attempt to escape his own hellacious home life. The two become unlikely friends, and patrol the streets of their suburban home in search of the big scoop. Problem is, news in the little city is just hard to come by. This does not dissuade Elliot's enthusiasm, and he finds great joy in reporting the most mundane of stories. His home life continues to deteriorate as his commitment to the news supersedes all of his other responsibilities. When he receives a letter from his idol ridiculing his efforts, Elliot snaps, and begins a psychotic vandalism/reporting spree whose consequences may very well allow Elliot to truly MAKE the news.
- When the daughter Emma of the technical writer Allen Pyke and the photographer Julie is found slashed in the throat and wrists in their locked apartment, the couple decides to move to an isolated cabin in the mountains in Kingspike. Julie is very depressed and blames Allen for the death of Emma. Once in the new home, Julie sees the spirit of Emma in a photo she took in a nearby abandoned prison and she becomes obsessed shooting pictures of poltergeists. Allen is advised to move from the place by the local Jim Payne, and on May 21st, Allen finds that the former dwellers of the cabin have committed suicide, and he investigates the death in the spot and finds that many people died around May 22nd. He decides to move with Julie to a hotel, but she does not want to give up on Emma.
