- Jesse is a single mother who works in her father John's bar while also applying into a nursing school. Jesse also has two brothers: John Junior, who is voluntarily mute until he learns to use language more efficiently, and Darren, who is trying to get rich with not-so-brilliant ideas. Jesse also has a son, Little John, who is handy in repelling jerks who try to hit on Jesse. Then a handsome Chilean, Diego, moves into the house next door and comes to borrow a can-opener. Jesse's dad takes instant dislike to Diego but Jesse feels attracted to Diego. Diego is pleased to learn that Jesse is single, but has to show restraint when Jesse tells her ex-husband walked out on her 7 years before. He asks Jesse out but she declines. Jesse's friend at work, Carrie, thinks that was a mistake. Jesse then decides to get to know Diego better.

So she decides to quit and move on. But not with the weird student guy Patrick, who announces that he's available. Danny considers Carrie "the whole package". He explains to Kurt that he's waiting for the exact right moment to strike. Kurt thinks Danny actually has fear of intimacy. Jesse has too much work to do to go to lunch with Carrie, so Patrick volunteers. Much to his amazement, Carrie accepts. At 1 a.m. the following night, Diego goes to bring Linda home since her date Chuck ditched her. After hearing that Linda still plans to see Chuck again, Diego tries to get into her head that she needs someone "nice". The following day Linda tells about this to Jesse, and claims that Jesse dumped the greatest guy in the world. Jesse disagrees - it all comes down to the fact that Diego wants "all or nothing". And suddenly she starts to think about it again...
- Little John has a part in kids' Christmas comedy stage-play of Jesus and his dog Barko. Diego is still upset about the kiss between Jesse and Roy. Roy has actually asked Jesse out on a date and Diego becomes jealous when he hears about it from Linda. Darren is going to appear in a TV commercial. He asks Carrie to return the ring he gave her in order to make Linda jealous, since the trick did not work. Carrie has had it and "breaks up" with Darren (they only pretended to be together), and Linda sees that her opportunity has presented itself.
- Diego gives Jesse a present: book of poems by Pablo Neruda. Jesse is impressed: no one has given her poetry before. Diego invites her to come over in the evening. There is just one problem: how to explain to Little John what exactly mommy is doing with a new man.
- Jesse and Diego take a private holiday to consummate their relationship. Darren has ordered a two-person horse costume for Halloween, but there are two end pieces of a horse and not a single head piece. Then Little John's father returns after seven years of absence...
- Diego appears on Jesse's doorstep in the middle of night to bang the door. He comes to bring an important message: Roy is "fundamentally evil". Jesse does not heed him. Linda has been arriving late to work for the whole week and Jesse's dad gives Jesse the task of reprimanding her. Meanwhile, Darren and Junior have a talk with Diego: their advice is: "Move along with your life." Diego then confronts Roy, telling that he is backing off. But that is not the conclusion...
- Little John has accidentally put in the mail a letter Jesse wrote for Diego a very long time ago and was forgotten and now she wants to stop the delivery. Carrie needs to send oranges to a friend and goes along Jesse to the Post Office. They think they will be helped by a very nice lady who is at the counter, but she has to go waway from her desk and here comes Cecil. Some previous episode with Cecil has made him very angry and now he will make sure Jesse's life gets messed up. He is upset and deliberately and personally takes the letter to Diego's house. Trying to retrieve it, Jesse's arm gets stuck in the slot. Linda tries to help but just makes things worse. The thing is that Jesse is afraid that the letter, which she wrote when first met Diego, would scare him away and now she wants Diego to take her more seriously.
- When Gwen leaves Diego's side to fetch a mitten she forgot, Diego's facade cracks and she begs Jesse to help him, because Gwen is crazy! Meanwhile, John Sr. meets an old crush, Marianne Myers. Jesse urges his dad to ask Marianne out. Will he do it? Diego sees refuge in the bar because Gwen is stalking him! Jesse says she can't help him. Will Diego end up as a chalk outline in the yard?
- It's the middle of October and it's unusually warm. So Jesse suggests to Carrie and Linda that they all barbecue. Jesse asks Linda to get her sweater, but Linda is reluctant to go home since Diego is there, painting and moping all day long over Jesse. So Jesse decides to invite him to barbecue. Carrie gets over-excited about the barbecue and stops by at the clinic the day before. Again, Danny embarrasses himself in front of her, but at least he gets invited to the barbecue. Even Kurt comes, despite his superficial lack of interest. Then he actually finds something deeply exciting at the barbecue.
- Darren has renamed the bar Drinkies and is holding the "first annual scavenger hunt". The grand prize is a Harley Davidson that Diego really wants, so he and Jesse split the list, although Jesse would rather spend the day together with him. So she has to play the "naked girl if we go together" card to talk him out of splitting the list. But what to do when the find an abandoned baby in the park?
- Diego only does not get the professorship he was expecting, but the University is bringing in a visiting professor from London and Diego has to share his studio with him. As Diego needs his job to stay in the USA, he can not afford to protest. This Dawson, or more specifically "just Dawson" as he himself puts it, proves to be an incredibly irritating person. Can Diego control himself? At the Health Center, Jesse learns that the nurse's aide before her earned more and wants to know why. Danny and Kurt tell Jesse that the previous aide had a license to take blood. Jesse doesn't. So she wants to learn. Can she stay conscious through the actual procedure?
- Jesse's annoying alarm clock keeps disrupting her dreams about Diego. Since Darren can't afford a place of his own at the moment, Jesse's very cute brunette friend from work, Carrie, suggests he stay at her place, but the dumb-ass just declines because he thinks he wouldn't get women then! Diego asks Jesse to go to movies with him, but her father objects. Jesse decides to ignore his opinion. Carrie and Jesse's other friend from work, the sexually aggressive Linda, help her choose something to wear. Then something unlikely happens on the date.
- Diego had mentioned a university cocktail party to Jesse, who assumed it an invitation to be his plus-one. However, at Diego's place, Jesse finds that Diego already has a date: the sexy student, Gwen (the apparently ageless Pauley Perrette, cf. NCIS, 10 years later), whom Diego has been seeing a while (since #1.12). Jesse goes nuts and starts to live an imaginary life according to the examples in the film noir marathon on TV... A life where Diego is a private eye and Jesse is a femme fatale. A life where someone kills Gwen in the first scene. Sad, but at least we see that Pauley Perrette has amazing legs.
- Jesse and Diego are playing strip-pool - where nobody loses! Main story: Jesse receives of a letter of acceptance from the local school of nursing, with full scholarship. Darren confides in Jesse that he's nervous about running the bar without Jesse. And poor Diego gets fired from the University. Which means that if he doesn't find another job, he will lose his work visa and therefore he is in danger of being deported. And the visa applies only to art teacher jobs...
- Jesse is hosting a movie night at her place, with Carrie, Danny, Diego, Kurt and Linda invited. Danny's pick, 'Last Tango in Paris', does not generate much excitement. Linda's pick, 'Ouch!, where people get hit by stuff, does not get the thumbs up either. Jesse asks for a comedy, and Diego has one - until he is told that 'Midnight Express' is not the same movie as 'Midnight Run'. This leaves Kurt's pick, 'The Sound of Music'. During the movie, Danny reveals that he played Rolf at the a singing camp. Diego reveals he would like to have seven kids and Jesse gets anxiety. Cue flashback to late 1980s when Jesse was on the ninth month pregnant, expecting Little John, but still adamant at seeing Guns n' Roses live. And fashion sense was dead.
- 1998–2000TV-PG6.5 (18)TV EpisodeDiego is trying to shovel his yard clear of snow, but three kids keep having a snowball war that undoes his every effort. So he has to drive them away. Linda does not approve. At the Student Health Center, Jesse faces an emergency: Carrie has found a squirrel lying outside, in the snow, an has brought it inside. Danny's first guess is that the squirrel is hypothermic and asks Kurt to take it to the exam room. But Kurt refuses to touch the nurse, so Danny enlists Jesse as a nurse in Kurt's place. Back at Diego's yard, Linda manages to provoke Diego into a snowball war.
- 1998–2000TV-PG6.0 (15)TV EpisodeJesse sees Diego's kitchen and points out that it's "really gross". Diego says it's Linda's mess and that instead of cleaning after her as usual, he has decided to see how long Linda can live in her own filth. Jesse states that he's going to lose. Neither is aware that Linda knows about Diego's plan. At the Student Health Center, one of the students does not believe that Jesse works there because she doesn't have a lab coat. Then a delivery guy does not believe she works there. Jesse pleads Kurt to give him a lab coat, but Kurt declares that it is awarded to her when she has "demonstrated consistency and capability as a nurse's aid". Kurt is not convinced yet.
- Little John leaves for a 3-day trip to Albany. Carrie and Linda offer to take Jesse on a girls night out, but Jesse has already rented 'Shakespeare in Love'. The she gets a call from Kurt: she is needed at work because the new girl quit on her first day. Jesse tells she's sick. Kurt doesn't buy it. Jesse finds out that the video store gave her a documentary instead. So she decides to change the flat tire of her car. Diego happens to pass by and starts providing help. Both get a chance to admire each others behinds and old feelings start to rise to surface. Soon they are in each others arms again. But do they see it the same way?
- Diego proposed to Jesse, who declined. Diego had to accept a job elsewhere because otherwise he would have had to return to Chile. Linda is living in Diego's apartment until he gets it sold. Jesse's still studying, but she wishes to get a job on the side, so she has a job interview at the Student Health Center. The interviewer, Kurt, is a hard-ass nurse, who bluntly rejects Jesse in less than 60 seconds. Jesse pleads her case, but Kurt does not give in. Then he is told to clean up some vomit, which leads to him hiring Jesse who can be ordered do it for him.
- Linda is pressuring Jesse to talk with Diego about their "magic moment" during the Christmas party. Jesse is reluctant, but then she sees that something is troubling Diego. He lost a professorship to a Kubist. She tries to cheer him up. There is *a* moment, but still no more talk. At the Health Center, Danny misses Carrie, who is on a trip (nooooo! No Jennifer Milmore in this episode!). One of the discs in Kurt's spine ruptures and he's hospitalized. Luckily for Jesse, Kurt's doctor, Jeff, shows interest in her. Unluckily for Kurt, his nurse, Rosemary (a pre-'Alias' Merrin Dungey), is his old nemesis from nursing school. Jeff asks Jesse out, but Jesse says she's "expecting to be involved with someone". Upon returning home, Jesse gets good news from Linda: Irma is packing! But it's not because she's returning to Chile, it's because Diego and Irma are going to Niagara Falls for the weekend...
- Linda provides Jesse with crucial info on the mystery woman Jesse saw enter Diego's apartment: From what Linda could understand of their speech, her name is Irma and she is Diego's childhood-ex. She may have come to rekindle the old relationship, but she still did not - at least yet - sleep in the same bed as Diego. Danny thinks he's making progress with Carrie. Even though Carrie earlier had no time to go have some coffee, Danny has decided to try again - but not before consulting Jesse. Then he actually gets a "yes" from Carrie. Jesse goes to introduce herself to Irma and hears some shocking revelations.
- Jesse forces Little John to take Darren as his roommate. Diego asks Jesse to come for dinner at his place on the following night. But then, when helping Darren move into Little John's room, Jesse happens to look out the window and sees that there is a mystery woman at Diego's place - a mystery woman who kisses him on the cheek and hugs him. What's going on?
- Little John is being harassed by a bully named Moe at school. Jesse intends to speak to the boy's mother but Little John panics at the thought: "It's just not done!" he insists. Jesse promises that everything will remain between her and the bully's mother. "And so it begins!" Little John resigns to the fate that awaits him. Jesse goes to see Moe's mom but only finds a stoner who says his name is Terry and he's not Moe's dad. "Moe is Suze and Fez's kid. I'm just a friend... of Fez's", he explains. Terry goes to find "Suze", who turns out to be Jesse's mother.
- Diego is still under impending deportation, so his only option to remain in USA is to marry and live with... Linda?
- 1998–2000TV-PG6.2 (14)TV EpisodeDiego returns from Chile - with HUGE mustache! He thinks they look "pretty nice", Jesse is petrified. Linda gets a job at the Health Center as a security guard. She has named Jesse her reference so the Head of Security has some questions for Jesse too. Turns out Linda may have exaggerated her achievements a little. Danny thinks Diego's mustache is "muy macho", but Diego tells him that he's gonna shave it off because Jesse doesn't like it. Danny has only one comment: Whipped! So Diego decides not to shave it off. which is not okay with Jesse. Linda announces that she's gonna take her job seriously. Nobody just realizes how seriously.
