Michael J. Hamilburg was born on June 15, 1933 in Beverly Hills, CA. He was the only son of literary agent Mitchell J. Hamilburg (1900-1968) and Beabe Rafsky Hamilburg (1906-1993), a seamstress in the wardrobe department at Warner Bros. during the 1930s.
After attending University High School, Michael went to Menlo College. He enlisted in the US Navy and upon discharge, he went to work for his father and later took over the management of the Mitchell J. Hamilburg Agency after his father's death.
In time, Michael expanded the agency's literary division to attract authors such as his cousin novelist Clifford Irving (his mother's first cousin), Senator George Mitchell, Senator Edmund Muskie, White House Press Secretary George Reedy, musician and poet Jim Morrison of The Doors, baseball legend Jackie Robinson, and columnist Jack Anderson. Although Michael represented former prosecuting attorney and author Vincent Bugliosi, he refused to represent the 1960s cult leader Charles Manson. However, Michael did represent swindler-turned-informant Mel Weinberg whose story was documented in the David O. Russell film "American Hustle" (2013) and Mel Weinberg served as technical consultant.
Michael Hamilburg served as an associate producer on the film The Yakuza (1974). He helped organize other film projects such as Von Ryan's Express (1965) , Shaft (1971) (1971), and Billionaire Boys Club (2018).
Michael was a co-executive producer on the movie White Mile (1994) about a whitewater rafting competition starring Alan Alda , Peter Gallagher and Robert Loggia . The movie was nominated for two Golden Globes and one Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Sound Editing for a Miniseries or a Special.
Michael's friend of over 40 years was Jim Preminger, the nephew of Otto Preminger and son of talent agent Ingo Preminger. Jim was working on a project with Michael up to the week before he died.
