"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 308 Recap: “Going Once … Going Twice”

18 November 2008 5:08 PM, PST | From AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news

I won’t keep you in suspense … This week’s episode is, thankfully, a vast improvement over the past several, in no small part because it finally illustrates that Scotty and Kevin are in a loving, if at times tense relationship. In other words, they’re truly married, and their marriage is no different than any straight couple’s. Plus, the wunderkind twins are deactivated, Robert and Tommy barely register, and Saul finally gets his gay back. It’s all good.

We open, like last week, on a close-up shot of naked flesh. And even though the chest we see is flat, it’s not Rebecca for once. Instead, the torso belongs to Kevin, asleep (in boxers, natch) in his bedroom. Given this is a room we haven’t seen since the Reverend McAbby days, I take this as an encouraging sign things are finally looking up for Kevin-Scotty visibility.

Visibility Matters: The Disappearing Lesbian on Primetime Broadcast TV

5 November 2008 7:49 PM, PST | From AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news

Visibility Matters is a monthly column by AfterEllen.com Founder Sarah Warn about larger trends affecting lesbian/bi women in entertainment and the media.

This weekend at the annual Women's Event fundraiser for New York's gay and lesbian center, L Word creator Ilene Chaiken said that when she launched her series six years ago, she assumed there would be plenty of other shows with prominent lesbian leads on mainstream TV by the time it ended.

But The L Word's final season begins in a few months, and not only are there no lesbian cop shows, comedies, or medical dramas on broadcast TV, there are no lesbian characters, period. At least, not on primetime broadcast television, home to America's most-watched shows.

At the turn of the century, there were several lesbian series regulars on primetime broadcast TV. In the 2004-2005 season, there were four or five. By 2006-2007, it was down to one.

"Grey's Anatomy" Fires Brooke Smith, De-Gays Melissa George's Character

3 November 2008 6:37 PM, PST | From AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news

Fans of Callie and Erica on Grey's Anatomy — in fact, lesbians everywhere — sit down and brace yourselves. Dr. Erica Hahn is no more.

Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello reported Monday that Grey’s Anatomy has let actress Brooke Smith go, spelling the end of her character and the relationship with Sara Ramirez’s Dr. Callie Torres. Smith confirmed the news in an interview with Ausiello.

Her last episode will be this Thursday.

Smith’s dismissal means the loss of American broadcast TV’s only lesbian/bisexual couple in primetime. It was also the first significant gay relationship portrayed on the hit ABC series. The handful of remaining lesbian/bisexual relationships on TV are on cable, premium channels and daytime television.

In addition, E! Online's Kristin revealed that Melissa George's character is no longer bisexual. "Melissa came on as a lesbian character," a Grey's source tells Kristin, "but they changed

'Samantha Who' is Almost There

2 November 2008 11:00 PM, PST | From buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news

While freshmen shows are eagerly anticipating their full season orders, some have already succeeded in landing a season, or at the very least, more episodes.  NBC has gone ahead to order a full season of Kath and Kim despite its mediocre ratings.  In fact, the network recently expressed their thoughts on the American rendition of the Australian original created by Gina Riley, Jane Turner and Rick McKenna, saying that it is one of those shows which they truly “believe in.”

Meanwhile, another network has stepped forward to bless a show for another additional episodes order.  On Friday, ABC ordered seven more episodes of Samantha Who?, which stars Christina Applegate as the titular character.

The call came following Monday's satisfactory ratings of 9.6 million viewers and a 2.7 rating among the 18-49 adult demographic.  The show managed to average a steady 10.5 million viewership, with a 2.8 rating in the 18-49 adult demographic.  Moreover, since its premiere,

My Own Worst Enemy: Is it Tough Enough to Stay?

26 October 2008 11:00 PM, PDT | From buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news

We recently reported that the new NBC series, My Worst Enemy, received mixed reviews as it debuted earlier this month.  The John Eisendrath-produced show which stars Christian Slater is set to air its third episode tonight and it has so far endured the airwaves with lukewarm ratings.  In fact, TV Guide recently revealed the ratings for the Monday nights which kicked off this fall season.

First off, we have the 8pm timeslot, in which Dancing with the Stars grabbed 18.56 million total viewers over its 90-minute run, gaining around 900,000 week to week.  Close behind Dwts is CBS’ Big Bang Theory, with an explosive yet stable 9.28 million and How I Met Your Mother, with 9.36 million.  Chuck closed in with 6.7 million.

As for the 9pm timeslot, Two and a Half Men took the top spot for the demographic for the first half hour with 14.55 million viewers, with Worst Week garnering 9.9 million viewers.

Worst Week: CBS Pulls Low-rated Sitcom for One Week, Good News for Gary Unmarried

23 October 2008 9:18 PM, PDT | From TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news

It's no big surprise that CBS is considering making a change to its Monday night line-up. Though Worst Week was hailed by critics as the best new sitcom of the season (not that there's much competition for that title), the public doesn't agree.

Worst Week debuted on September 22nd on CBS. The quirky, single-camera sitcom follows unlucky Sam (Kyle Bornheimer) as he tries to make a good impression on the family of his pregnant fiancé. The series, a remake of a UK sitcom, also stars Erinn Hayes (The Winner), Nancy Lenehan (Grace Under Fire), and Kurtwood Smith (That '70s Show).

The sitcom premiered in the plum spot following CBS' most-watched sitcom, Two and a Half Men. Unfortunately, Week doesn't seem to be a good fit. The show debuted to 9.3 million viewers and a 3.1/7 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. It was nearly tied for second place in viewers (with the

Fiendish death devices? Check. A prolific serial killer explaining his unique theory of how to convince people to appreciate being alive? Check. And lots of blood and everything else found inside human bodies.

This is Saw V, the latest installment in Lionsgate’s ferociously successful horror franchise, now splattering onto screens to the undoubted delight of Jigsaw followers everywhere.

And Oren Koules, who with partner Mark Burg has co-produced all of the Saw films, along with the upcoming horror musical Repo! The Genetic Opera (and, oddly, TV’s Two And A Half Men), says there are details in the movie aimed directly at the audience. “We do a lot of it now for the fans,” he says. “I know that sounds so cheesy—’Oh, we do it for the fans’—but we really do. We say, ‘They’re really going to love this,’ and actually do it almost like Toy Story,

CBS Eyes First Place For Third Week

22 October 2008 2:46 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

For the third straight week, CBS has dominated the primetime ratings, scoring solidly not only among viewers in general but also among adults 18 to 49, the demographic group most prized by advertisers and a group that had previously eluded the network. The network scored gains over last year in every major category tracked by Nielsen Media Research -- and was the only network to do so. It also placed six shows in Nielsen's top ten. CBS averaged a 7.3 rating and a 12 share for the week, well ahead of second-place ABC, which recorded a 5.9/10. Fox placed third with a 4.6/7, while NBC remained in last place with a 4.2/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 11.8/18; 2. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 11.7/17; 3. NCIS, CBS, 11.2/17; 4. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 9.7/14; 5. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 9.6/14; 5. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 9.6/14; 7. 60 Minutes, CBS, 9.4/15; 7. The Mentalist, CBS, 9.4/14; 9.
