Cinematical Seven: The Funniest Ladies of 2008

7 October 2008 8:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

While I'm sure we'll all agree that these past few years have given us some wonderful little comedic gems, it's often unfortunate to see most of the attention thrown at one particular sex, or, in some cases, one particular man: Judd Apatow. But this post won't be about Judd Apatow, or Seth Rogen ,or Jonah Hill, or Michael Cera, or Will Ferrell, or Adam McKay, or Vince Vaughn, or Owen Wilson, or Kevin Smith ... or any of the male names that currently populate (and dominate) some of your favorite comedies. Nope, because it's about damn time we give the ladies some respect.

I'm sick of the female roles in comedies today. She's either the bland girlfriend, or the bland friend, or the bland enemy -- she's full of cliches, and only serves two purposes: 1) to help move the story along, and 2) to make her male counterpart appear funnier. That said,

Baby Mama, Leatherheads Find Infertility on Blu-ray [Blu-ray Patrol]

18 September 2008 4:58 PM, PDT | From FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news

When you dive head first into the world of Blu-ray, as I have, you come to realize very quickly that the extra dollar isn't always worth it. In fact, there are many occasions in which the 1080p video quality does nothing for a movie, and if it doesn't come gift-wrapped ...

Poehler Leaves Saturday Night Live

16 September 2008 11:59 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Comedienne Amy Poehler will leave her post at hit U.S. comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live to give birth to her first baby later this year.

Poehler announced her pregnancy with her husband, Arrested Development star Will Arnett, in April.

She has been widely-celebrated on the star-studded show for her charicature of former first lady and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

But the Baby Mama star insists she will not be returning to the show following her maternity leave - she will instead star in her own series - a spin-off of Steve Carell's U.S. TV series The Office.

Poehler muses, "It's gonna be really hard - Boyz II Men hard - to say goodbye to yesterday. SNL was dangerous, late-night, last-minute and star-studded, but like any good drug, you need to know when to put it down."

Her last episode will air later this season, following the November presidential election.

DVD Review: Baby Mama

16 September 2008 12:24 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Baby Mama is the type of good-natured adult comedy I want to like more than I actually do. There are some extremely funny moments and some highly agreeable performances, but overall the film moves a bit sluggishly and never catches fire in the ways it should. While the potential for greatness is definitely there, unfortunately there is a feeling of safe blandness bordering on the predictable, and while there's little I can truly rail against here there's just as few virtues to extol. This is a movie that plays almost 100-percent better at home than it did in the theater. Many of the things that initially annoyed me didn't affect me as much while sitting on my couch. The flaws were still there, I just was able to shrug them off a bit easier. That's not exactly a recommendation, but it still speaks volumes as to how the majority of audiences will probably respond.

Tina Fey Parodying Sarah Palin on SNL, the Video

14 September 2008 8:00 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Tina Fey twisted her hair to a formal bun and wore a different kind of glasses to resemble Vice President candidate, Sarah Palin. The comedienne returned to the new season of "Saturday Night Live" on Saturday, September 13, parodying the Republican representative alongside her "Baby Mama" co-star Amy Poehler who portrayed Hillary Clinton.

The skit was labeled as a "non-partisan message" that discussed on the issues of sexism in the hype of the presidential election. Poehler as Clinton said, "I believe that diplomacy should be the cornerstone of any foreign policy." Fey then added, "I can see Russia from my home" as a satire to Palin's lack of knowledge in international affairs.

Fey also touched the issue of global warming that Palin has related to her religious belief, saying that global warming is "just God hugging us closer". The real Sarah Palin reportedly had a good laugh of the sketch, speaking

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed A quick note before we get started, Blu-ray.com is reporting "that at least one company will offer a limited number of Blu-ray Disc players for under $200 this holiday season." They do suspect these will be the "door buster" style players that aren't exactly the top-of-the-line and will be sold the day after Thanksgiving to make way for the newer players come December. Also, I had a mistaken release date back in August when I said How the West was Won (Ultimate Edition) was released on August 26. In fact it hits stores today and I linked to it in the "Even More" section below and the link will take you to the Amazon page with all three versions of the film that are hitting stores today. You can read my original write-up for the release right here or my DVD review here.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey have signed on to play husband and wife in Shawn Levy’s “Date Night” for 20th Century Fox, according to Variety.

In the film written by Josh Klausner, the married couple discovers their usual date night goes beyond dinner and a movie. That’s all we know about the plot at this stage.

Levy, whose directing credits include “Cheaper by the Dozen” and “Night at the Museum,” is currently filming “Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian.”

Carell most recently starred alongside Anne Hathaway in “Get Smart.” Fey was last seen opposite Amy Poehler in “Baby Mama.”

Both Carell and Fey are looking at potential Emmy wins for their television comedy shows “The Office” and “30 Rock.”

Neither “Baby Mama” nor “Get Smart” really won me over, but that doesn’t mean Fey and Carell will fail to pull this off. In fact, the

'Love Guru 2' or 'Austin Powers 4' Which Idea is Best?

30 July 2008 7:25 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood reports that Mike Myers has started writing Austin Powers 4 with Mike McCullers (Baby Mama). McCullers and Myers worked on the second and third installments in the franchise together. Finke's source tells her the project is very personal for Myers and a father-son relationship will be at the center of the story focusing on Dr. Evil (Myers) and his son Scott Evil (Seth Green). Apparently the film will be an homage to Myers' father who died on November 22, 1991 of Alzheimer's. There is no greenlight for the film per se, but New Line is apparently excited about the project. It seems nothing changed at the studio after being folded into Warner Bros., they are still courting bad ideas. An interesting fact is listed in Finke's article that I had not heard before saying that Myers originally wrote in a character called The Love Guru in the first Austin Powers film.

Let's Look Back at the First Six Months of 2008

8 July 2008 3:06 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Wild and wooly, there was little to love, but a lot to look forward to... A lot has happened in the past six months and while there may not have been very many good movies and there were plenty of bad ones there was much more to remember as well as a lot to look forward to. First off, the writers'strike was finally settled, but as we move into the second half of 2008 the actors are now threatening to shut down Hollywood with a strike of their own. We learned of a new kind of woman out in the wild and she is known as a "Twilight Mom", a term that proved it could wreck havoc on your server should you decide to bash any part of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" novels or the film based on said material. I wrote an article called "I Wanna Be a 'Twilight' Mom!

Commercials for new movies are the least likely to be skipped by users of TiVo digital video recorders, according to a study by the DVR maker. The study, conducted in April, found that the least fast-forwarded (and most-watched) ad was for Universal's comedy film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which aired during NBC's The Office. (The episode itself, however, did not even make TiVo's list of the ten most-watched shows.) The second least fast-forwarded ad was for Sony Pictures' Hancock which aired during an episode of ABC's Grey's Anatomy. Other movies making the top-ten list included Sony's Made of Honor (#4), Universal's Baby Mama (#7), and Paramount/Marvel's Iron Man (#10).
