Box-Office Oracle: Sep. 5 - Sep. 7, 2008

4 September 2008 2:27 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks in a Row 1. Tropic Thunder Why not a month straight? It's NFL opening weekend which should hurt the actioner (Bangkok Dangerous) more than the comedy. Also, if you look at Nic Cage's September history it isn't pretty. Lord of War, Matchstick Men, and The Wicker Man are all September releases that didn't hit double digits opening weekend. Estimate: $8.4 million 2. Bangkok Dangerous Plus, do you really think I want to root for Bangkok Dangerous this weekend? Trust me, I don't. And at this level of box office dollars it doesn't make a difference anyway. I know Brad likes to hammer my predictions but we're talking about seventeen people per showtime for this one. Seventeen people x seven dollars per show x nine shows per day x three days in the weekend = this box office number. So if that number jumps to 30 people all of a sudden I'm way off.

The Da Vinci Code 2 Ghost Rider Rides Again

4 September 2008 2:01 PM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

I was skeptical of even writing this article since I honestly don't believe a sequel to Ghost Rider (review) will ever actually see the light of day. But since Nic Cage insists on talking it up, even claiming he's spoken to the studio about returning for a sequel, I guess it's news-worthy.

Honestly though, is there anyone out there truly clamoring for another Ghost Rider aside from Cage? I mean, yeah, if there was hope they might do it right this time, but I think we all know that's not going to be the case. After seeing Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and even the Incredible Hulk reboot this past summer, how much worse does a movie like Ghost Rider look in retrospect? I come across more positive word-of-mouth about the Fantastic Four flicks. Sure, technically speaking, Ghost Rider did make money at the box office. Technically speaking, so did Meet the Spartans.

Concept art for Green Lantern

3 September 2008 5:42 PM, PDT | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

We're not into superhero adaptations around here, in fact I haven't seen Iron Man and stopped watching Hellboy 2 halfway through, but this concept art was just too good to pass up. It was created by illustrator Brian Murray for screenwriter and possible director Greg Berlanti. Now for those of you who know who Berlanti is, he's done such wonderful things as Dawson's Creek, so yeah, we really don't care about the film, we just like the art. Check it after the break!

The Light of the Green Lantern -- Conceptually, Anyway

3 September 2008 4:32 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

The Green Lantern movie seems to be creeping very slowly to the pre-production line, but at least it isn't dead. You probably remember that we had a tiny update back in June that it was happily shaping up into a proper origin movie, rather than a slapstick version starring Jack Black. Now, courtesy of illustrator Brian Murray, comes concept art he created for scriptwriter (and potential director) Greg Berlanti. This art helped seal the deal, and win the franchise for Berlanti Television. A glance through the gallery below tells you why -- it's exciting and cinematic, the kind of thing your mind starts filling in and speeding up. If this is what is floating around at Warner Bros, Green Lantern could be shaping up to be something on par with Iron Man. But my desperation to talk about another DC character other than Batman may be showing. The diehard Lantern

3 September 2008 12:15 PM, PDT | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Remember The Incredible Hulk videogame? Based on this summer’s movie, the game received solid reviews but the bulk of its sales happened around the movie’s release. Hulk smashed New York City, but we’ve forgotten about him since then. But what if Hulk was fighting another Hulk?

Maybe it was a feature that didn’t make it in time for the street date. Maybe it’s hype for the game as we near The Incredible Hulk movie’s DVD release. But Sega has released a Hulk Multiplayer Expansion Pack. For free!

This multiplayer expansion pack for The Incredible Hulk adds additional online, two-player missions that will test the speed, strength, and skill of even the biggest Super Hero fan. War Machine to Appear in Iron Man 2, 3 And a Spin-Off?

3 September 2008 11:08 AM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

War Machine from the Iron Man universe

Terrence Howard (who played James “Rhodey” Rhodes in Iron Man) was overheard on the radio this morning stating that not only would the alternative Iron Man armor known as War Machine be appearing in Iron Man 2, but that it would also be written into the script for the third film and there was a good chance that the character would get a spin-off movie franchise after the third Iron Man movie.

This information is thin at best and comes from a radio appearance by Terrence Howard on the Morning Show on station Wwpr-fm (Power 105.1) in New York City.

Here’s the audio file with the interview, thanks to the fine folks at Wwpr:

Of course the appearance of War Machine in an upcoming movie was hinted at in the last film when Rhode glanced at the Mark

Ledger Tops Movie Villain Poll

3 September 2008 7:02 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight has been named the summer's best movie villain.

The late actor, who died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in January, won 95 per cent of the votes in a poll conducted by Moviefone.com - easily beating off competition from Cate Blanchett's villainous Indiana Jones soviet agent foe.

The Aussie actress' Irina Spalko came in second with two per cent of the vote.

Iron Man's nemesis Jeff Bridges tied with The Incredible Hulk actor Tim Roth and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor star Jet Li for third place, with one per cent each.

The end-of-summer Moviefone.com poll was another big winner for The Dark Knight, which has made a total of $502.4 million (GBP271.5 million) at the U.S. box office - it also won in the categories for Best Sequel, Best Superhero Movie, Best Action Sequence and Movie Most Worth Your Cash.

Russell Crowe Is No Guy Ritchie's Dr. Watson

2 September 2008 11:34 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Despite circulating rumor, Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe is unlikely to take the part of Sherlock Holmes' sidekick, Dr. John Watson. Director Guy Richie insisted on the fact for his next film project, "Sherlock Holmes", at the premiere of his latest gangster movie "RocknRolla". "I don't have a Watson," he responded to the casting speculation. "Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson."

Regarding the plot, the husband of Madonna hinted that a new story has been developed especially for the film. "It's going to be an amalgamation of all those narratives," he revealed. On the same notion, producer Susan Downey shared, "The world is within all the stories and it actually goes back to the books but the story is actually one that we made for the movie.

News Flash: Internet Polls Don’t Influence Movie Casting

2 September 2008 6:01 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

ComicBookMovie is reporting that according to a number of online polls and surveys, Tom Welling “may just be heading to the big screen to portray the role that made him famous on TV.”

To which I say: Bunk.

Their source is a British site called Coventry Telegraph which has gone out and found a bunch of online polls and such where fans are overwhelmingly picking Smallville star Welling as their choice for the man to play Superman in the next movie. One poll has actually gathered 1,482 names voting for Tom Welling as their man to don the blue tights and red cape.

Well, damn, in that case I’d say it’s a lock.

Anyone who knows anything about the way studios really work will tell you that fan preferences have pretty much nothing to do with movie casting decisions. Sometimes they make a good call (Michael Keaton as Batman,

Author Mark Millar Updates Details on Wanted Sequels

2 September 2008 8:41 AM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

I'd nearly forgotten about it, but Wanted was one of the best summer films, just below Iron Man. And like Iron Man, a sequel is already in the works, as we've known for quite a while. Comic book author Mark Millar recently updated Newsarama and spoke about his plans for the sequel, which do not include writing another comic. Millar explains that the six issue series was all he had ever planned for and won't be doing another. As for the movie, though, Millar mentions that James McAvoy will be back (obviously) and that he is doing some minor work to help point the screenwriters and director in the right direction. Millar tells Newsarama: "What I will be doing is providing them with a very small amount of stuff for a story, and that will be used as a basic story that they can build from. It will be a

Screen Rant Guests On The Cinema Blend Podcast

31 August 2008 8:59 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

I know that people have asked why we don’t have a regular podcast here at Screen Rant. I made an attempt about a year ago to do a weekly podcast before we had a great stable of writers, and I found it extremely difficult to do alone.

So what about now, you ask? Now it’s an issue of time, or rather not enough of it, plus trying to coordinate a time that most of us can get together when we are located across the country (with Niall in the UK!).

However this week Cinemablend was nice enough to invite me to join their regular weekly podcast “The Weekly Blend” and it was a lot of fun. Rafe, Margaret and Tim over there are all very cool and fun to chat with about our favorite topic: movies.

I thought it went pretty well and it actually gave me a

It’s almost September and that means that the big summer movie season of 2008 is finally over - but what a summer it’s been!

2008 delivered the kind of summer that superhero and action movie geeks dream of - this is the year that brought us three bonafide superhero movies: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and what was that third one… oh yeah: The Dark Knight.

We also had the chance to see the long awaited Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the latest Pixar flick Wall-e, Will Smith as a superhero in Hancock, Angelina Jolie as an assassin in Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. To keep us laughing we had Tropic Thunder, The Pineapple Express (which I haven’t seen) and Get Smart.
