Sherlock gets Strong

5 September 2008 4:21 PM, PDT

Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie is coming together quick -- we've got minted A-lister Robert Downey Jr. as the legendary sleuth, and possibly Russell Crowe as his nemesis Moriarty. So who else is gonna be in this thing? Ritchie let slip to Coming Soon that he's got up-and-comer Mark Strong in the cast as well. No word on who he's playing, but it's not Holmes' trusted comrade Watson -- that role hasn't been filled yet. You'll definitely be seeing Strong in the near future -- besides...

Drew Struzan retires

5 September 2008 3:30 PM, PDT

Cue up the saddest theme music you have on your internal soundtrack -- a great contributor to the world of movies is hanging up the brushes. Artist Drew Struzan, who has provided iconic images for some of the greatest genre movies in the past few decades, has decided he's all done with illustration, leaving many blank walls for emotionally devastated film fans in the future. It would be virtually impossible for anyone to have never seen Struzan's work, but you can find plenty more below. We're gonna miss your gifts, Mr. Struzan.

Spidey 4... and 5?

5 September 2008 2:10 PM, PDT

Ever since Spider-man 3 was released to gigantic profits and inconsistent fan response, everyone has wondered what Sony would do -- obviously they have wanted to make more movies/money with the webbed wonder, but would director Sam Raimi, in the face of so many new offers, be interested in continuing the Spider-series past a trilogy? Would Tobey Maguire ejaculate more wrist-jizz? Would the studio just recast the main roles and do a "soft reboot"? Fear not, True Believers. If...

Marley & Me poster

5 September 2008 9:01 AM, PDT

The upcoming comedy Marley & Me stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as a couple whose rambunctious titular dog teaches them how to live. It's based on John Grogan's memoir and, despite all that, the studio is apparently banking the film's marketing, as you can see from the poster below, on the adorableness of the dog, which is a unique strategy but may not necessarily give the box office return they're hoping for. Marley runs amuck on Christmas Day.

Free Moore movie

5 September 2008 8:57 AM, PDT

Notoriously media shy, Bush tormenting documentarian Michael Moore is yet again displaying his legendary, non-publicity seeking humility. He's decided to release his next film, Slacker Uprising, free online via Blip TV on September 23rd with a DVD release to follow on October 4th. As with all his previous films, Uprising stars Moore, this time on his 62 city tour through college campuses in swing states during the 2004 presidential election attempting to rally young voters to, well,...

New Yes Man trailer

5 September 2008 8:50 AM, PDT

Jim Carrey is looking to add some much needed chutzpah to his recently lukewarm career with the high concept comedy Yes Man and if the previous media and this new trailer that recently debuted at Yahoo, which you can check out below, are any indicator, he may just do it. In it, he stars as a top class a-hole who attends a seminar in which he's convinced to say yes to everything. When he does this, he finds his eyes are open to the greatness of life and so on and so forth. Zooey Deschanel...

Snow is Breaking

5 September 2008 7:26 AM, PDT

Brittany Snow is in negotiations to star in the thriller Breaking The Girl. The sexually charged film follows Sara Ryan, a betrayed co-ed who befriends a fellow student with a nemesis of her own. The pair plot to kill each others' enemies, but Ryan discovers all is not what it seems. I can't figure out if this chick is cute or not. On the one hand yes she is, but on the other I saw John Tucker Must Die and Sophia Bush made her look like one of those 'before' girls in makeover ads. Is that a...

Germany hates Qt

5 September 2008 7:13 AM, PDT

Tobias Kneibe, film editor of the Suddeutsche Zeitung has brought mainstream German attention to Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards, claiming that he expects it to be savaged upon its release. Even though he loved the script, and many German film fans love Tarantino, he expects that it will be torn to shreds by local critics. "All the German historians and critics who were left gasping for breath by Tom Cruise and his worthy attempts will be so shocked by 'Inglorious Bastards' that...

Cruise a Monster?

5 September 2008 7:12 AM, PDT

Tom Cruise and United Artists have acquired the rights to the best-selling book The Monster Of Florence, a serial-killer thriller. The story is based on eight grisly double homicides believed to have been committed single-handedly between 1968 and 1985 in and around the Italian Renaissance gem. Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), who worked with Cruise on Valkyrie will write the script. So will Cruise star in this? Sure, why not. He can do anything. I don't care what anyone says or...

Crowe still in Holmes?

5 September 2008 3:26 AM, PDT

It appeared that the Russell Crowe in Sherlock Holmes rumors were debunked pretty quickly. I had even heard word that Crowe was offered a role in the film (alongside Robert Downey, Jr.) put politely passed. Now Latino Review is saying that Crowe could still be in the mix. Apparently the initial reports of Crowe starring as Watson were incorrect and that Guy Ritchie was talking to Crowe about starring as Professor Moriarty. Latino's source says there is a "Very good chance" that...

Zack, Miri go green

5 September 2008 3:21 AM, PDT

Just the other day the red-band trailer for Zack And Miri Make A Porno popped up online and set raunchy new heights for red-band trailers. Today the green-band trailer (you know, the kind you'd normally see in a movie theater) is online and it's interesting to see what they've cut and what they've added in. I'll include the green band theatrical trailer for you below and then head over here to watch the red-band trailer so you can compare and contrast. Just know you won't hear any mention of Lawrence Of A Labia in the green-band version...

Review: Righteous Kill

5 September 2008 12:23 AM, PDT

Plot: Detectives Turk (Robert De Niro) & Rooster (Al Pacino) are on the trail of a serial killer who's been knocking off some of the worst criminals in the city. Eventually- it becomes clear that the killer is a cop, and soon suspicion begins to fall on the hotheaded Turk, while the more even tempered Rooster must try to clear his partner's name. Review: This is a terribly depressing review to write. I know that buzz has been bad on this one for months, but I was really hoping that...

The Ten Spot 2/2 - Movie Sluts

5 September 2008 12:22 AM, PDT

My Ten Favourite Movie Sluts My wife walked down here just after I posted that title and stared at the screen for a while. After an exaggerated sigh she silently turned away and went to bed. I don't what she's upset about more, me using the word slut when referring to women or the fact that I have ten favourite of them. I'm glad I didn't go with my original idea of The Ten Hottest Retarded Women. I also want to apologize to Tara Reid. I Googled "movie sluts" and she was one of the...

Walker's Bone Deep

4 September 2008 10:40 PM, PDT

Two actors in need of a career rennaissance are Paul Walker and Hayden Christensen. Once considered to be two of young Hollywood's hottest properties, both have seen a significant decline in relevance and work. Once the king of the galaxy as young Vader, Christensen has been relegated to the role of that guy who's banging Rachel Bilson, while Walker is running scared back to the fast and furious glory days. Fittingly, the two have decided to join forces in an attempt to regain their places...

Bettany is Darwin

4 September 2008 10:17 PM, PDT

Charles Darwin was like, a really smart guy. He knew so many things about so many things. Natural selection, the evolutionary theory, the origin of species, all that stuff you slept through in high school--that's Darwin! A daunting task it would be, to play the man himself. But apparently Paul Bettany is confident enough to do so, as he has just been cast in a new Charles Darwin biopic called Creation. I guess if I was banging Jennifer Connelly, I too would have the confidence to...

Denzel's Next

4 September 2008 9:58 PM, PDT

Denzel Washington is set to star in Book Of Eli, a post-apocalyptic drama to be directed by the Hughes Brothers (From Hell). The film will follow Washington as a singular hero, forced to fight the forces of evil in the not-too-distant-future in order to grant society its chance at redemption. Sounds a bit like I Am Legend with smarts. I guess one might even argue that Denzel is like Will Smith with smarts. But then one might argue that Will Smith is the biggest movie star on the planet so...

No Mel for DeNiro

4 September 2008 2:31 PM, PDT

It was going to be a cop thriller featuring two heavyweight Hollywood talents, from Casino Royale director Martin Campbell. Now Edge Of Darkness has shed a few pounds of fame. Robert DeNiro has bolted from the project shortly after filming commenced in Beantown, leaving star Mel Gibson without someone to grimace toward. In his first lead role since Signs, Gibson plays a homicide detective investigating his own daughter's death, only to discover dark secrets involving corporations and the...

Shooting the Bastards

4 September 2008 2:06 PM, PDT

For the past couple of months, we've been keeping track of all the conjecture and casting on Quentin Tarantino's suddenly swift-moving WWII project Inglorious Bastards. We already know who most of the participants are... but how will Qt's new movie actually look? Here's a hint: Robert Richardson is serving as director of photography. As a point of reference, Richardson has been a go-to guy for cinematography on numerous movies from Martin Scorsese (Casino, The Aviator) and Oliver Stone...

More Ghostbusters?!?

4 September 2008 1:47 PM, PDT

Was Dan Aykroyd right all along? For years, the alter-ego of spook-shooter Ray Stantz cheerfully discussed the possibility of another Ghostbusters movie, but it never came together (with rumors of disdain among the principals and economic infeasibility as the primary reasons). There was talk of replacing the cast with new actors as a different team of specter hunters, a computer-animated movie, and a sequel done as a next-gen videogame (which now seems to be in limbo at the moment). But...
