Taylor Lautner Is ‘In’ For ‘New Moon’

7 January 2009 9:42 PM, PST

So it looks like Taylor Lautner is in and Robert Pattinson is out. Don’t get freaked! Pattinson is out of another movie to make time for the sequel to Twilight – more on that second detail later.

For you Twilight fans wondering who will be playing Jacob in the sequel, New Moon, it turns out that it’ll be the same dude from the first movie!

That’s right ladies and gents, Taylor Lautner will be back for the sequel reprising his role as Jacob Black of the Quileute tribe. The character of Jacob who was a rather minor character in Twilight plays an increasingly bigger part in the later installments becoming one of the more main characters.

The author of the Twilight novels wrote on her website today the following message on behalf of the director of New Moon, Chris Weitz (who is replacing Catherine Hardwicke):

“I’m

David Goyer: Warner Bros. Putting DC Movies On Hold

7 January 2009 9:32 PM, PST

In an IESB interview for The Unborn, director/writer David Goyer says all DC properties are currently on hold for the time being in regards to film development. This comes as confirmation of what we’ve previously suspected.

When probed about Supermax and Justice League, Goyer had this to say.

“A lot of the DC movies at Warner Brothers are all on hold while they figure out, they’re going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that so everything has just been pressed pause at the moment.”

Including the two movies mentioned, Superman and Green Lantern would also be on hold. With an across the board freeze, Warner Bros. may be looking to create a cohesive DC Universe.

The follow-up question asked whether or not this was attributed to the success of The Dark Knight and Goyer continued.

“It was the double header of both ‘Iron Man

D.J. Caruso To Direct ‘Jack the Giant Killer’

7 January 2009 9:26 PM, PST

D.J. Caruso, director of such films as Disturbia and Eagle Eye, has been signed on to direct Jack the Giant Killer, a drama that takes a more adult look at the classic children’s story Jack and the Beanstalk.

The New Line Cinema produced film has been written by Mark Bomback (writer of Live Free or Die Hard and the upcoming Race To Witch Mountain) and produced by Neil Moritz (I Am Legend, Click). Here is the synopsis:

When a princess is kidnapped, a long-standing peace between men and giants becomes threatened, and a young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giant kingdom to rescue her.

As far as I can see this will be live-action which would be equal parts interesting and strange. To me this story would work very well done in some sort of animated form but live-action? That way it

Good And Bad Watchmen News

7 January 2009 9:12 PM, PST

If the recent (Japanese) Watchmen trailer wasn’t enough, we’ve got plenty more news. But this time around, it’s not all awesomeness, it’s a bit good and bad. A Judge will decide the release date - and the 10th Watchmen Journal has been released.

First, the bad news. On January 20th, the fate of fans will once again rest in the hands of Us District Court Judge Gary Allen Feess. In court papers filed on Monday, both Fox and Warner Bros. have agreed to let the federal judge decide–foregoing a jury trial. Judging by Feess’ prior rulings, I’d say this doesn’t play in The WB’s favor.

With the Judge having already ruled that Fox owns the rights to Watchmen, all that’s left are the details. Paramount is already handling the Watchmen international release and day-and-date openings in major markets, so up for

Smallville To Power On To A 9th Season

7 January 2009 9:04 PM, PST

Mid to late last year, conjecture was abound as to whether this 8th season of Smallville would be the last season, as had been originally planned.

Many factors were floating around as to the outcome. Does The CW stick to the original plan? Do ratings have an impact on the plans? What about actor availability? Do we, the viewers want a 9th season? Ok, that last one was a duh.

This season has seen some pretty good plot lines. We’ve seen a few new characters, we’re about to meet the Legion of Superheroes from the 31st century and wait ’til we find out who sent them! We’re going to be seeing The Toyman in February and heck, even Tori Spelling is going to reprise her role of gossip columnist Linda Lake for at least one episode.

Back in December, ratings were telling The CW that the show should go on.

And The Villain In Iron Man 2 Is…

7 January 2009 3:39 PM, PST

The Crimson Dynamo!

According to Variety, Mickey Rourke is in talks to play the Russian bad guy in Iron Man 2.

Woah.

Also being considered is the very cool Sam Rockwell as a secondary villain in the film.

From Variety:

“Rourke is in discussions to play a villain described as Tony Stark’s Russian alter ego, a heavily tattooed bruiser who is in the arms trade and battles Iron Man in his own nuclear-powered armored suit.”

So there you go. As far as I know this is the first confirmation of who the villain will be in the Jon Favreau-helmed sequel. The article says “speculation is that villain is likely comicbook nemesis Crimson Dynamo” but anyone familiar with the comic knows that’s who it is from the description above.

I don’t know what “secondary villain” might be played by Rockwell, but I can tell you that the phrase “secondary villain” scares me.

Because We Need Another Remake: Sorority Row

7 January 2009 3:04 PM, PST

My fat, balding (but not as good looking as me) buddy over at HorrorMovies.ca has a couple of exclusive pics from the R rated to PG-13 remake of the 1983 film The House on Sorority Row coming out this October, now titled only Sorority Row.

The film will star a bunch of cute young things including Briana Evigan, Leah Pipes, Jamie Chung, Rumer Willis and Audrina Patridge.

Update: The following is now a non-sequiter rant, as a Screen Rant reader pointed out that it seems this film will Not be rated PG-13, although that was the original plan.

I really, Really hate this 21st century trend of PG-13 horror movies - I mean how much “horror” can you put into PG-13 movie? Back in the glory days of horror movies (the 1980s to be precise), you had tons of creative gore and to be blunt, half the reason to go

‘Outlander’ Movie: Exclusive New Image & Release News

7 January 2009 2:21 PM, PST

Here’s what looks to be a cool movie that’s been slowly crawling and scraping its way towards release literally for years, now. You may have heard of it (since we’ve mentioned it here before) - it’s called Outlander and it has the sweet little concept of pitting Vikings against aliens.

You’re looking at an exclusive new pic from the movie above, which shows a monster (called a Moorwen in the film) assaulting a Viking village. A priest has stepped forward in a what will soon be a strikingly unsuccessful attempt to stop it. The light comes from the creature itself, which is bioluminescent. (Thanks to writer/executive producer of the film, Dirk Blackman)

We posted a few weeks ago that Outlander was finally getting a theatrical U.S. release date and we have an update for you. It’s going to have a limited release

McG To Direct 20,000 Leagues Remake

7 January 2009 8:49 AM, PST

2008 seems to have been the year of career for director McG. Despite a ton of fanboy hateration, the Charlie’s Angels director managed deliver what looks to be a kick-ass addition to the Terminator franchise, Terminator Salvation. Now, with five months yet to go before Salvation hits theaters, word comes that McG is being handed another big-budget project to helm: Disney’s remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

The official title of the film is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo. The script by Bill Marsilii (Deja Vu) follows the source novels of Jules Verne, about Captain Nemo’s quest to design his mighty undersea warship, The Nautilus, in order to explore the mysteries of the deep.

For those besides Screen Rant-runner Vic who are ancient enough to remember, the original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie was Walt Disney’s first live-action film. The 1954 production was a monumental financial risk

First Official U.S. ‘Street Fighter’ Trailer = Weak

7 January 2009 8:45 AM, PST

It’s kind of strange that Fox released a Japanese trailer for the upcoming video game adaptation Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li before the English language one. Although I guess you could argue that since the original game hails from that country, perhaps they wanted to get those fans excited first before attempting to get us interested.

Nonetheless the Japanese trailer actually gave me some hope for the film because of the way it was cut, it seemed (as most trailers do) to show the best bits and as far you could see from that specific trailer there wasn’t anything overtly bad about it. But this new English language trailer has instantly killed any hopes I had.

Check out the awful trailer (courtesy of IGN.com) below:

[See post to watch Flash video] Wow, does that look bad…

I mentioned in my post about the bizarre Street Fighter movie poster that the fact they

‘Tron 2′ Gets Its Lead

7 January 2009 8:08 AM, PST

The sequel to the classic 1980s film Tron, now going by the same name (but we’ll keep referring to it as Tron 2), is a highly anticipated one and the news being released of both original stars Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner coming back as well as the fact they’re “staying true to the original” makes me very excited about it.

Well it seems that the project is zooming along at light-cycle speed as Disney has announced they’ve found their leading man. He is Garrett Hedlund, who you may recognize from such films as Four Brothers (he was the youngest one), Friday Night Lights, Georgia Rule, Death Sentence (he was bad-ass in that) and Eragon.

He reportedly beat out Ryan Gosling, upcoming Star Trek star Chris Pine and Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield) for the role.

Not much is being released by Disney about the film’s plot details,

Now Mickey Rourke Is Expendable, Too

7 January 2009 7:55 AM, PST

Imagine for a minute that you are Mickey Rourke.

Finding it a bit difficult?

Don’t worry, stay with me for a minute. You were once a hot commodity in Hollywood but you burned some bridges and went into professional boxing where your good looks were replaced with a visage that’s more Frankenstein than Valentino. Over the last fifteen years or so your career has been loitering in the straight-to-dvd section of video stores, except for a few roles in major flicks like Man on Fire and Sin City.

And then suddenly, you’re the star of a low budget, critically acclaimed independent movie and the word Oscar is mentioned in every sentence with your name (The Wrestler). What would you do? Hold out for a role in the new Scorsese film? Hell no! You join the cast of Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables because you know what a comeback is!

Fight Like A ‘Ninja Assassin’

6 January 2009 10:30 PM, PST

This is a must watch if you have any interest at all in action films, martial arts, sword combat or parkour. /Film got a hold of a behind-the-scenes video of the fight choreography training for the upcoming Ninja Assassin movie.

The video features the infamous 87 Eleven stunt performing/coordination and martial arts training group who also worked on hit action movies 300, the Bourne films and this year’s Watchmen (hopefully this year). They do amazing work and are becoming more and more involved in some of the biggest action films around.

Ninja Assassin is the story of one of the world’s best assassins, Raizo (played by Korean pop star, Rain) who was trained to kill by a secret organization that later executes his best friend. Naturally, Raizo must avenge his friend’s death and the blood bath ensues.

Take a look at some of the action sequences you can

A Rant On ‘The Descent: Part 2′ (Plus First Images)

6 January 2009 10:22 PM, PST

Today we have the first bunch of images to be released for the sequel to Neil Marshall’s modern horror masterpiece The Descent, simply subtitled Part 2 (although word is that in the UK it will be called The De2cent). Before I express my rather strong opinion about this, check out the images below:

Now I’d just like to warn you that the following may very well be spoilerific of the first film The Descent - so if you haven’t seen it I recommend you skip the rest of the post (although I assume most of you will have seen it, or else why would you be interested in sequel news in the first place?).

First off I must express my love for the first film - I had all but lost faith in modern horror films when it was released, and it hit me like a bolt of lightning.

Megatron Not In Transformers 2?

6 January 2009 10:10 PM, PST

Apparently, a reader of JoBlo.com has in his possession the 2009 preview issue of Empire and it contains some information on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Specifically, it includes comments from Michael Bay in which he points out that Megatron will not be in the sequel to the 2007 summer blockbuster. In his comments, he references the early leaked images I wrote about back in September of what seemed to be a new tank version of Megatron from the sequel and he says that’s just some new Megatron movie universe toy made by Hasbro.

Hmm… pretty decent and detailed concept art (with shots of multiple angles) just for a toy of a main character who’s not in the movie but has a new version of himself…

Is this simply direct misinformation (is that an oxymoron?) from the captain of the ship? Were those pictures of a Cybertronian tank with Megatron’s head just misinformation?

New Japanese Watchmen Trailer = More Awesomeness

6 January 2009 10:03 PM, PST

After seeing the Japanese version of the Watchmen trailer I have to ask myself: is all the best stuff getting outsourced overseas these days?

Seriously though, this latest (and by far greatest) version of the Watchmen trailer gave me chills. You gotta check it out.

It’s funny how the Japanese trailer goes the extra distance of firmly establishing Watchmen’s setting, namely the skewed 1980’s timeline in which Richard Nixon is perma-president, the Cold War threatens to go hot at any moment, and world annihilation seems just a tick of the doomsday clock away. (Basically all the background information they didn’t think American audiences could handle until the final trailer drops.)

[See post to watch Flash video] What new stuff I saw in the Japanese version just made me want to see this flick all the more. Zack Snyder seems to have captured the essence of Watchmen, while still managing to put his own unique stamp on it.

Shazam! It’s Dead

6 January 2009 12:13 PM, PST

A big-screen adaptation of Shazam! has long been in development over the years. And it appeared the project was picking up steam with the news that Peter Segal (the director behind Warner Brother’s recent Summer hit Get Smart) had signed on to direct.

But according to the film’s writer John August (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and Big Fish), Shazam! is in fact dead.

Speaking on his blog, August gave a detailed “blow by blow” report detailing the problems he faced with issues ranging from the age of Billy Batson (the lead character) to keeping the film’s villain Black Adam from being “too sympathetic.”

But August ultimately reveals the real culprit behind its demise:

“In retrospect, I can point to two summer Warner Bros. movies that I believe defined the real issue at hand: Speed Racer and The Dark Knight. The first flopped; the second triumphed. Given only those two examples,

Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Cast In ‘Tintin’

6 January 2009 8:00 AM, PST

Although rumours have been abounding on the net about the upcoming Steven Spielberg directed and Peter Jackson produced Tintin, the guys over at AICN have managed to confirm via a “trusted source not at all involved in production” that one of those rumours is indeed true. That is that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are set to star as the characters Thomson and Thompson respectively. They will join already announced cast member Andy Serkis (who’s playing Tintin’s friend Captain Haddock).

There was news at one point of young Thomas Sangster playing the title role but he dropped out due to “scheduling conflicts” - although I can’t see what other movie he would rather do than one directed by Steven Spielberg, one of the most famous and most loved directors out there, and produced by Peter Jackson, the man behind Lord of the Rings,

‘Jonah Hex’ Gets New Director

6 January 2009 7:40 AM, PST

It seemed that the comic book adaptation Jonah Hex was in trouble when Crank director’s Mark Nevaldine and Brian Taylor dropped from directing the project because of “creative differences” (although their script will still be used). However it now seems that the project is back on track as another director has been brought on board - he is Horton Hears a Who! director Jimmy Hayward, making his live-action directorial debut.

I know, I know… what the hell, eh?

For those of you fretting don’t worry - No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin is still on-board to star, so at least we still have that to cling to. But why did Warner Bros. decide to give the directing gig to the guy who did Horton Hears a Who!?

I can’t comment on the quality of that film, not having seen it, but I can’t see

The Powers Of ‘Push’

5 January 2009 9:10 PM, PST

Today we have a sweet little flash webpage courtesy of Superherohype.com which lists and details all of the powers of the upcoming Push action film.

It’s pretty cool as it details plenty of information about new powers that were not shown in the trailer and it gets me a little more excited to see this movie. You can see it by clicking on the link a bit further down the page.

You’ll notice that the very first power listed in the top left is that of pusher which when clicked, shows and describes the power of that lady from the trailer which the plot of the movie seems to revolve around. The site reveals the name of that character to be Kira Hudson.

I’m guessing the title of the film relates directly to that specific power and character. The website describes a “pusher” as one who
