Guillermo del Toro did not mince words when trying to convince frequent collaborator Alfonso Cuarón to direct “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
According to Oscar winner Cuarón, fellow Academy Award winner del Toro simply called him an “arrogant asshole” for even hesitating to take on the beloved franchise installment. However, Cuarón might have had a point in questioning Warner Bros.’ decision to offer him the directing gig: At the time, his most recent film was “Y tu mamá también,” which is decidedly not YA material.
“I was confused because it was completely not on my radar,” Cuarón told Total Film of “Harry Potter”. “I speak often with Guillermo [del Toro], and a couple of days after, I said, ‘You know, they offered me this “Harry Potter” film, but it’s really weird they offer me this.’ He said, ‘Wait, wait, wait, you said you haven’t read “Harry Potter”?’ I said,...

Of L.A.’s two NBA teams, the Clippers have always been like the neglected little brother next to the more glamorous and celebrated Lakers. So it’s fitting, then, that FX’s new Clippers chronicle Clipped — premiering Tuesday, June 4 exclusively on Hulu; I’ve seen all six episodes — pales in comparison to HBO’s superior Lakers saga Winning Time. A gaudy and campy basketball docudrama sung in the key of Ryan Murphy (though Murphy isn’t involved in this production), Clipped bites off far more than it can chew. It’s part underdog sports drama, part overheated soap opera...

What We Do in the Shadows is heading back into the shadows after its upcoming sixth and final season on FX — but it’s not going out quietly.
“I think we end with a bang,” Harvey Guillén, who plays Guillermo on the vampire comedy, tells TVLine in the video above, adding with a laugh: “I would say we’re building up to something very expensive… We’re in a different world.” His co-star Matt Berry (aka Laszlo) teases that Season 6 will feature plenty of “stunts” and “guest stars” as well — but “no goblins,” co-star Mark Proksch (Colin Robinson) is quick to emphasize.

As Below Deck nears the end of its season, Dylan has spoken his truth about both experiences.
This week, Dylan appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

Netflix’s latest Spanish import, Between Lands (Entre Tierras in Spanish), is a unique marriage between thriller and melodrama that works really well for the most part. The term “melodrama” usually implies something with an overly dramatic flair, flashy characters, and a flurry of sensational events. But it has kind of become the norm to take the genre as a lowly form of entertainment, which I find to be simultaneously stupid and unfortunate. Making really good melodrama is actually pretty difficult, I would say. You need to have a story that should be able to hold the audience from the beginning to the end, along with characters worthy enough to root for (or hate). Between Lands does have its thrill elements, like murder, deceit, and conspiracy, but what it mostly relies on is the drama at its core. And the show aces it by sticking to the basics. The story...

Chicago – In a breezy and memorable 96th Oscars … which took place on March 10th, 2024 … the Best Picture was “Oppenheimer,” with Cillian Murphy taking Best Actor and Robert Downey, Jr. for Best Supporting Actor from the same film. Emma Stone was the surprising Best Actress for “Poor Things” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph was Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers.”
The introduction of the major acting awards from former winners to the current nominees was an emotional addition to the ceremony, and should be included as tradition every year. The comedy bits worked (thanks Guillermo) and Jimmy Kimmel handled the hosting duties with panache and a serious burn on a former one term president. Add Ryan Gosling’s spectacular “I’m Just Ken” live performance, and the the Best Oscar ceremony in years was the result.

The highly awaited Oscars 2024 honoring the movies that were released in 2023 took place on March 10th, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel returned as the host for the ceremony for the fourth time following his successful stint at the 89th, 90th, and 95th Academy Awards.
Every year, Jimmy Kimmel’s sidekick, Guillermo Rodriguez, gets his spotlight at the Academy Awards, especially with getting the celebrities drunk on the red carpet. He has had shots with stars, including Charlize Theron, Eddie Redmayne, Chris Pratt, Channing Tatum, and more on the Oscars’ red carpet. Many actors often make headlines for keeping props from the set of movies or shows (usually after filming is wrapped) to keep as memorabilia. Charlie Hunnam, star of Sons of Anarchy and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, is among those who confessed to following such a tradition. But he may have gone a tad bit overboard with his pursuit. Hunnam apparently “stole everything” from his uber-popular FX crime drama series, especially from the costume department!

Mark Gustafson, the stop-motion specialist who won an Oscar this year for his work on Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, died Thursday. He was 63.
Del Toro announced the news Friday on social media, posting: “I admired Mark Gustafson, even before I met him. A pillar of stop motion animation — a true artist. A compassionate, sensitive and mordantly witty man. A Legend — and a friend that inspired and gave hope to all around him. … Today we honor and miss him.”
The Oregonian newspaper also reported his death.
Gustafson also worked on the stop-motion California Raisins characters early in his career and served as animation director on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), another Oscar-nominated stop-motion film.

Many folks discovered actor Holt McCallany in his brawny breakout role as FBI analyst Bill Tench in David Fincher’s serial killer series “Mindhunter” (Netflix). McCallany, who is 60, brought an old-fashioned robust masculinity over three decades to countless smaller roles, from Fincher’s “Alien 3” and “Fight Club” to Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley.”
“Del Toro is one of the kindest, smartest and most gifted filmmakers,” said McCallany over Zoom. “The only thing is, he wouldn’t let me do my own stunts. ‘Guillermo. I can do it! Believe in me!’ I get run over by a car by Bradley Cooper. They let me do the part where I get smashed in the face by the bumper, but he wouldn’t let me roll over.”
Now he pops out of the ensemble in Sean Durkin’s holiday hit “Iron Claw” (A24) as Fritz Von Erich, the controlling patriarch to...

Harvey Guillén, who portrays Guillermo in What We Do In The Shadows, has given us a hint of what’s coming up in the sixth and final season for the show and his character.
“We start where we left off and sometimes dreams and aspirations don’t turn out the way we want them to, (spoiler alert if you haven’t seen Season 5)”, he told Deadline on the red carpet of the Critics Choice Awards, last night where he was nominated in the supporting actor category. “But I think that’s the whole point of rebirth right? It’s like a renaissance. It’s happening again and you take a new direction, new ideas, new approach so I’m really excited for the audience to see a new layer to Guillermo.
Asked what he’ll take away most from playing Guillermo? “It’s never too late to find yourself. It...

Godzilla Minus One has surpassed 2016’s Shin Godzilla at the global box office, making it the biggest entry in Toho’s blockbuster series of films.
What great news to start the year with. Godzilla Minus One (which we were big fans of) is now the biggest Godzilla film of all time.
As Dark Horizons reports, Godzilla Minus One’s impressive $78 million haul at the global box office puts it ahead of Shin Godzilla, which made $76 million back in 2016. Godzilla Minus One had a reported budget of only $15 million, making the achievement even more impressive.
In the US, Godzilla Minus One holds the most successful opening of any Japanese film ever. It also overtook Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth as the sixth highest grossing foreign film ever in the country. We can’t imagine Guillermo is too upset though – he seems to love the film.

Vampires might be immortal (unless they step out into the sunlight ... or they get set on fire ... or you stab a pointed wooden stake through their heart ... or you chuck holy water on them ... maybe we need to come up with a different word than "immortal"?), but TV shows, alas, are not -- not even our favorite ones. So it is that the sun will soon rise on "What We Do in the Shadows," the wonderfully weird and queer -- not to mention often gory and always horny -- supernatural horror-comedy mockumentary series spun off from the cult film of the same name.
Like so many other ongoing shows, "What We Do in the Shadows" was set to begin production on its latest season this year ... that is, of course, before the major American studios and streamers decided they would rather bring the film and TV industry to a standstill...

Last year, FX ordered two more seasons of their vampire comedy series What We Do in the Shadows, which would be the fifth and sixth seasons of the show. Season 5 started airing back in July and wrapped up at the end of August, and we can expect to see season 6 sometime next year. Unfortunately, there’s now a bittersweet edge to knowing that season 6 is on the way, as The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the sixth season of What We Do in the Shadows will also be the show’s last.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, FX “will bring its comedy What We Do in the Shadows to a close with its sixth season. The series is entering the back half of a two-season renewal that will take the show to its conclusion.“

FX‘s vampire roommate comedy What We Do in the Shadows, inspired by the 2014 film of the same name, will officially end with its upcoming sixth season. Created by Jemaine Clement and inspired by his film of the same name with series executive producer Taika Waititi, What We Do in the Shadows debuted in 2019 and has delivered five seasons full of laughs as the mockumentary-style comedy follows the exploits Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), energy vamp Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), and their human familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén). (Credit: Russ Martin/FX) In Season 5, The Guide (Kristen Schaal) boarded the comedy full-time, playing an integral role in many of the larger plots at play in the now-penultimate season. Executive producer and series director Yana Gorskaya told TV Insider in August that the team behind the show had been in the “early stages” of getting Season 6 when the strikes began.

Put a stake in our hearts: The sixth season of vampire comedy series “What We Do in the Shadows” will be its last according to Vulture.
The outlet confirmed that the series begins production on its sixth season next month, and it’ll be the last season for the effortlessly charming vampire roommates.
“What We Do in the Shadows” wrapped its fifth season earlier this summer on FX.
The fifth season picked up after “Nandor feels his familiar (and sometimes friend) Guillermo slipping away as he seems to be spending much more time with Laszlo. Nadja, suffering the effects of a previously-undiagnosed supernatural hex, reconnects with her family — or at least, a family — from the Old Country. Colin pursues the path of so many energy vampires before him by running for political office and The Guide tries to figure out where she fits in as the relative newcomer to this tightly-knit group.

Llévame en tus brazos. When the Locarno Film Festival announced that its 2023 Retrospective section would survey Mexican popular cinema between the 1940s and 1960s, it meant not only that the canon of Mexican film history would also necessarily be the subject of major revision—or, at least, debate—but also that a considerable amount of resources would be expended on the digitization and restoration of films long omitted from official histories. The 36-film program, “Spectacle Every Day—The Many Seasons of Mexican Popular Cinema,” precipitated new digital versions of many varied genre movies produced between 1941 and 1966, some well-known today, but the majority rescued from obscurity. Unlike previous retrospectives put on by the Locarno Film Festival, and reflecting recent shifts in the accessibility and quality of scanning and restoration technologies, this year’s series primarily featured digital copies of the films with only a few notable celluloid exceptions. When I first perused the festival program,...

The upcoming movie I am most excited about, bar none, is Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein." One of my favorite timeless stories told by one of my favorite artists? Sign me up!
It's the film that del Toro's career has been building towards. The man loves monster movies and gothic literature like no one else. His empathy is always most reserved for the outsider, whether Hellboy, the fish man from "The Shape of Water," or the socialist rebels in Franco's Spain. These flourishes trace back to his childhood infatuation with "Frankenstein," the book and movies alike; take a look at his living room.
Del Toro, who considers Frankenstein and his monster one of fiction's few "universal" characters, has been teasing this adaptation for years.

Watch out! This post contains spoilers.
At the end of "What We Do in the Shadows" season four, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) makes the drastic decision to ask Derek (Chris Sandiford) to turn him into a vampire. Fed up after years of his master, Nandor (Kayvan Novak), ignoring his pleas, he decides to get it done himself.
But at the beginning of the show's fifth season - which premiered in July - we find out Guillermo's turning didn't work. Or it did work, but only a little bit. At the start of the season, it's been 16 days and the typical vampire powers haven't fully come in for him, which is highly irregular. Guillermo can still eat food (though he does crave very rare meat) and go out in the sun. He can't, however, turn into a vampire bat and fly away.
Over the course of the season, we ultimately find out why Guillermo's transformation didn't work.

You remember "Pacific Rim Uprising," don't you? The 2018 sequel at least had the good sense to continue telling stories in a world begging to become a franchise and also cast John Boyega in a much-deserved leading role, but still managed to squander its potential with a lackluster story, a bizarre and unflattering habit of setting all its major action sequences in broad daylight, and, most egregiously of all, the decision to move forward without director Guillermo del Toro's involvement. This has obviously been a sore spot for the acclaimed, monster-loving filmmaker, but we never quite got to the bottom of why things went down the way they did.
Until now, that is. "Pacific Rim" and its thrilling set pieces just turned 10 years old and, to mark the occasion, del Toro teamed up with Collider to host a special Q&a session after a recent screening of the original movie in glorious IMAX.

Guillermo del Toro has compared 'Pacific Rim: Uprising' to "home movies from your ex-wife".The 58-year-old filmmaker didn't direct the 2018 sequel after making his 2013 movie and he admitted he's never seen Steven S. DeKnight's film, even though he was a producer, because he ultimately didn't want to know how it compared to his own film.He told Collider in an interview to mark 10 years since the release of 'Pacific Rim': “I didn’t see the final movie because that’s like watching home movies from your ex-wife.“It is terrible if they’re good and worse if they’re bad, or the opposite. You don’t wanna know. So, I didn’t see it. I did read the final script, and it was very different. Some of the elements were the same but very different.”Guillermo was originally supposed to direct the sequel but pulled out of...
