“A Transparent Musical” is heading to New York and Broadway. The show, the first stage play from Amazon Studios, premiered in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum in May — becoming the last show at the Taper for now, as Center Theater Group has canceled all shows at the stage following the close of “A Transparent Musical” on June 25.
But whereas the Mark Taper is on hold, “A Transparent Musical” has big things in store. According to Amazon, the show’s producers “intend to bring the show to Broadway sometime in 2024.” The musical, or course, is based on Amazon Prime Video’s Emmy-winning series “Transparent,” created by Joey Soloway, who also wrote the book to the stage musical with Mj Kaufman. Faith Soloway wrote the music and lyrics to “A Transparent Musical.”

Geffen Playhouse hosted a few notable names inside the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater on opening night of Vinny DePonto’s Mindplay. The show, described as “a love letter to the imperfect mind,” is a participatory experience that works when audience members jot down “something that’s recently been weighing on your mind,” like a fear, regret, memory, etc. Guests place the slips of paper in sealed envelopes that are then dropped in a fishbowl.
Throughout the night, DePonto pulls out the envelopes at random, one by one, and invites guests on stage for mind-reading exercises. Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino (Up) got the call and DePonto shocked guests by knowing — without opening the envelope — that Giacchino had zeroed in on a favorite memory of attending Burning Man.

Lauren Patten called attention to the conversations around Jagged Little Pill‘s gender non-conforming representation, thanking her nonbinary and trans colleagues while accepting the award for best featured actress in a musical at Sunday’s 74th Tony Awards.
“It is such a joy to finally be able to celebrate all of these phenomenal artists in this room after this long, long pause. It is also a strange time for awards. We are in the middle of a reckoning in our industry. And first and foremost I want to thank my trans and nonbinary friends and colleagues who have engaged with me in difficult conversations, that have joined me in dialogue about my character Jo,” Patten said.

Refresh for updates Acknowledgements, thank yous, laments for shuttered theaters, pleas for racial justice and get-out-the-vote plugs are being offered by this year’s crop of Tony Award nominees.
“It is an uncertain time for the theater world and the world at large,” said Jake Gyllenhaal, a triple nominee, “so if you are able, I encourage you first to Vote and then – if you can – to donate to The Actors Fund.”

“The closing of Broadway theatres (indeed almost all American theatres) this year has left us without a vital resource to gather together and examine ourselves and our nation and has reminded us just how important live theatre is to our personal and civil lives,” said playwright Matthew López, whose The Inheritance was nominated in 11 categories.

While Congress debates how much (or how little) to parse out to the entertainment industry in the next Covid-19 relief package, a group of Broadway insiders is making clear just how wide and varied the $14.7 billion Broadway ecosystem really is.
In what is meant to be an evolving effort, The Broadway Community Project is an interactive online diagram – an industrywide family tree of sorts – displaying the more than 170 roles that represent more than 100,000 jobs that make up what’s known simply as Broadway. There are actors, or course, and ushers, concession employees and stage doormen, but also the workers usually unseen by the public: milliners, say, and insurance brokers, house managers, musical contractors, general managers and, of course, producers, to name just a sampling.

Abigail Disney described how her outrage over Harvey Weinstein’s conduct prompted her to launch a bid for The Weinstein Co. and ultimately led to the creation of a new type of entertainment company that blends creativity with a broader social mission.
The documentary filmmaker and granddaughter of Walt Disney Co. co-founder Roy O. Disney offered a blistering critique of Weinstein and of billionaire Ron Burkle, who backed a bid for The Weinstein Co. that was fronted by a Maria Contreras-Sweet.
Referring more broadly to the industry, Disney remarked, “If raping and pillaging is part of your business plan, it’s probably how you treat everything else in your world.”
In a video conference call with a handful of journalists, Disney said she was “filled with rage” by the allegations of rape and sexual assault against the once-powerful Hollywood producer. She said her anger motivated her to back a bid to take over the studio.

Content venture Level Forward was born out of anger and frustration during the Weinstein Co. sale process earlier this year.
Adrienne Becker, CEO of Killer Content (parent of Killer Films), and filmmaker/investor Abigail Disney joined forces in January to launch a female-led studio that aims to redistribute some of its proceeds to non-profit orgs fighting gender discrimination and sexual harassment, among other causes.
Killer Content and Abigail Disney, who is the granddaughter of Walt Disney Co. co-founder Roy Disney, had been pursuing the acquisition of Weinstein Co. assets in the hopes of using them as the engine of a company that would support female-empowerment organizations and initiatives — a reaction to the horrifying allegations of sexual assault leveled at Harvey Weinstein.
